Some South-West All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and leaders, all close associates of the party’s presidential candidate, Senator Bola Tinubu, met with Governor Wike in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital, with speculations rife that it was an attempt to win Wike over to the ruling party.

The meeting took place at the private residence of the Rivers governor.

In the entourage were Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, and that of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Also seen at the residence of the Rivers governor were Senator Olaka Nwogu and former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, all of who declined to comment on the meeting.

With the host, Wike, also evasive on baring the mission of the visitors and outcome of the meeting, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Rivers told Vanguard, “There is nothing hidden under the sun. كازينو مباشر

“They have their reasons for not spilling what transpired now, but at the right time, someone would speak if he has to.”

Speculations are rife that the move is all about taking advantage of the fragile state of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the moment to win Wike over to the ruling APC.

The feeling is that the Rivers governor was betrayed both in the party’s presidential primary and the selection of a running mate for PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

University Don: I Cautioned Aregbesola About Kuje Prison Attack

A University don, Dr Sadiq Amali of the Department of Sociology, Federal University Jigawa, has disclosed that he saw the attack on the medium security correctional facility in Kuje, Abuja, coming.

While speaking about the attack on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Dr Amali said he had written to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, about the pending attacks.

Gunmen, believed to be terrorists, in their hundreds, invaded the facility on Tuesday night.

The attackers used explosives and gained entry through the main entrance and the fence of the facility.

A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the attack with about 70 of them being suspected members of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The security expert said if actions were not taken by authorities, the attacks might continue.

“I had professional contact with the minister [of Interior] and the Controller General of Corrections on the rising cases of jail attacks in the country.

“I saw it coming. This is not the first time it’s happened and unfortunately, this might not be the last.

“When they were decongesting the custodial centres during Covid, I had professional contact with the minister and I advised him on certain measures and the dangers of decongesting the prisons.

“What if they [released inmates] go back to the wider society and try to collaborate with other dangerous elements and try to release their fellow colleagues that are in custody.

“I saw it coming, the minister reacted to my correspondence and I think that maybe the security measures put in place were not adequate, or maybe there is a bit of laxity on the part of the correctional service.”

While describing the attack as a national embarrassment, the specialist in offenders’ rehabilitation faulted the intelligence gathering and sharing capacities of security agencies in Nigeria.

He also said there had been a decline in the security apparatus in custodial facilities across the country, calling on the government to take immediate steps to address loopholes.

President Joe Biden will sign an executive order Friday aimed at protecting abortion rights in response to the landmark decision by the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Biden is expected to sign the executive order during a Roosevelt Room ceremony Friday morning. Vice President Kamala Harris is also scheduled to attend.
Democrats and advocates have been pressuring the White House take a stronger stance to codify abortion access. Last month, Biden hinted he was considering taking executive action, telling Jimmy Kimmel that while he believed Congress should codify Roe, “There’s some executive orders I could employ, we believe — we’re looking at that right now.”
Friday’s executive order will prompt Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to take steps to ensure access to abortion, including FDA-approved medication abortion and expanded access “to the full range of reproductive health services,” according to an administration fact sheet shared with CNN. Those services include “emergency contraception and long-acting reversible contraception like intrauterine devices (IUDs),” the fact sheet says, citing coverage of birth control under the Affordable Care Act.
HHS is tasked with submitting a report within the next 30 days to the President regarding the implementation of the order’s provisions, which also include steps to increase outreach and protect the medical and digital privacy of patients seeking abortions.
In addition, the order establishes an interagency task force between the HHS and the White House Gender Policy Council, which includes Attorney General Merrick Garland, who the White House says will provide “technical assistance to states affording legal protection to out-of-state patients as well as providers who offer legal reproductive health care.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov

Russian-US discussions on the issue of American mercenaries in Ukraine failed to proceed, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told reporters on Friday.

“As far as I understand, the discussions failed to develop,” he said in response to a TASS question. “The US earlier sent some kind of a signal, mostly stressing that these people should be regarded as combatants under the Geneva Convention and the corresponding obligations should be applied to them,” Ryabkov added.

The senior Russian diplomat pointed out that “the circumstances of mercenaries’ emergence and the overall presence and activities of foreign mercenaries on the side of Ukraine’s Armed Forces and nationalist battalions are one of the most serious issues in our relations with the US and other Western counties”.
