Police in Ogun State on Thursday arrested two suspects over the alleged abduction of Pastor Mapai Samuel in charge of ZOE Family International church, Odo-Eran in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The suspects – Ibikunle Opeyemi, a lady and Kadiri Jamiu – were arrested following a distress call received by policemen at Aregbe divisional headquarters.

The Police Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi told newsmen in Abeokuta that two men in military camouflage accompanied by a woman had invaded the church while the pastor was preaching at 8 pm, dragged him out of the Church and took him away to an unknown destination.

According to him, shortly after the clergyman was taken away, the invaders called to demand a ransom.

Oyeyemi said the Divisional Police Officer at Aregbe Division, CSP Ikechukwu Gabriel, alongside his detectives immediately embarked on a “technical and intelligence-based investigation.”

He said the Gabriel-led team later discovered that the suspects were hiding somewhere around the Adigbe area of Abeokuta.

Oyeyemi said the DPO and his men stormed the alleged kidnappers’ hideout, rescued the victim and apprehended two suspects.

The PPRO, however, said the two men in military camouflage escaped.

“On interrogation, the woman amongst them claimed to have been in a business relationship with the pastor, and that the Pastor cheated her in the course of the business which made her contact the three men to kidnap the Pastor to teach him a lesson,” Oyeyemi said.

He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, to have ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the anti-kidnapping unit of the state criminal investigation department for discreet investigation.

Oyeyemi said the CP also directed that other members of the gang must be arrested, while he praised his men for their quick response to the distress call.

Lagos House Of Assembly Service Commission Chairman Sacked

The chairman of the State House of Assembly Commission, Wale Mogaji, has been sacked.

He was sacked with a unanimous voice vote by members of the Lagos Assembly on Thursday.

His dismissal was announced in a statement by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashir Obasa.

Part of the statement read, “Mogaji’s sack was approved after a voice vote by members of the House at plenary.

“The lawmakers appointed Mrs. Folashade Raulat Latona as the new Secretary of the Commission.

“Latona replaces Mrs. Esther Lambo, who retired recently.

“The House also confirmed Barrister Olalekan Onafeko as the substantive Clerk of the House while it elevated three other senior staff to the position of Deputy Clerks.

“Those elevated Deputy Clerks include Mr. Babs Animashaun, Mr. Taiwo Otun, and Mrs. Adenike Oshinowo.

“Onafeko was appointed Acting Clerk in 2020.”

Earlier during the plenary, the House raised concerns over the recent boat mishap that led to the death of about 15 people on June 8 as well as the floods recorded in some parts of the State recently.

The lawmakers further said there was a need for the Governor of the State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to work towards a solution to the flooding incidents.

Sri Lanka President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, resigned on Thursday following months of mass protests in the island country.

Mr Rajapaksa, who was expected to resign on Wednesday, had fled the country first to the Maldives and then to Singapore from where he sent his resignation letter via email to the parliament’s speaker.

According to BBC, the speaker will complete legal processes and announce the resignation officially on Friday.

Mr Rajapaksa fled the country before resigning, allegedly over fears that he might be arrested.

“He has not asked for asylum and neither has he been granted any asylum. Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum,” BBC quoted Singapore’s foreign ministry as saying when they confirmed the president’s arrival.

A BBC footage from Colombo, the country’s capital, showed protesters celebrating Mr Rajapaksa’s resignation.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was on Wednesday appointed acting president, will now be sworn in as interim president.

Mr Wickremesinghe Wednesday declared a nationwide state of emergency and imposed a curfew in certain parts of the country.

The prime minister had also said he would leave office when a new government is in place. No date has been fixed for his resignation.

Lawmakers say they will elect a new president by July 20.

The 22 million Sri Lankans have been suffering a horrifying financial turmoil with severe shortages of fuel, medicine, food, and other essentials amid record-high inflation and a devaluation of the country’s currency. A severe lack of foreign exchange has stalled imports.

The acute shortage of fuel has crippled transportation systems in the country and stopped children from going to school among others.

The same economic crisis and protests led to the resignations of Basil Rajapaksa, a brother to Sri Lanka’s outgoing president and the country’s former finance minister, from parliament in June and their older brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, as prime minister, in May.

Sri Lanka is nearly bankrupt and has suspended repayment of its foreign loans with foreign reserves near empty. It announced in April that it was suspending repayment of foreign loans due to a foreign currency shortage.

Its total foreign debt amounts to $51 billion. Out of this, it must repay $28 billion by the end of 2027.

Headline inflation in Sri Lanka hit 54.6 per cent last month, and the central bank has warned that it could rise to 70 per cent in the coming months as the country is relying on aid from India and other nations.

Party leaders are in discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a three billion-dollar bailout. Government must raise interest rates and taxes as a condition for the loan.

However, World Bank has agreed to give the financially distraught country a $600 million loan.

2023 Presidency: Christian Politicians In APC Warn Against Muslim-Muslim Ticket

The All Progressives Congress has postponed the unveiling of Kashim Shettima as the running mate of its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

However, no official reason had been given as of the time of filing this report.

Also, no new date has been announced for the unveiling.

The ABN TV had reported that Tinubu announced Shettima as his running mate on Sunday, saying the former Borno State Governor was picked to enable good governance.

But the APC had failed to officially announce Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate four days after.

Controversy, however, greeted Shettima’s choice as some northern governors expressed reservations.

Also, many Nigerians faulted the selection of Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate, warning the APC against having a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Why I picked Shettima as my running mate -Tinubu

Tinub gave reasons for picking former Governor of Borno State, Kasim Shettima, as his running mate despite agitations against the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

He made this known in a statement obtained by ABN TV on Sunday.

ABN TV reports that there had been agitations against the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket the Christian Association of Nigeria and some prominent Nigerians.

According to Tinubu, he prioritised national growth and development above “religious sentiments” in picking Shettima.

Tinubu said Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that “he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all-important electoral victory”.

The APC presidential candidate recalled that in 1993, Nigerians embraced Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe, in “one of our fairest elections ever held”.

He explained that if we truly understood the challenges upon Nigeria, citizens would place competence in governance above religious sentiment.

“The spirit of 1993 is upon us again in 2023,” he added.

Part of the statement read, “I have never been an indecisive man and have no present intention to become one.

“Having now listened to the sage, careful advice of a broad section of the party and of the nation, there are a few points I feel I must make about the exceptional and extraordinary person with whom I will share the APC ticket and the principles of open and good governance that informed this choice.

“I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Other have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.

“Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.

“If I am to be that type of President, I must begin by being that type of candidate. Let me make the bold and innovative decision not to win political points but to move the nation and our party’s campaign closer to the greatness that we were meant to achieve.
25. Here is where politics ends, and true leadership must begin.

“Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region.

“May I say this to all of you, especially to those who will be disappointed in my selection based on religious considerations. I will not and cannot ignore the religious concerns and ethnic sensitivities of our people.
Taking them into due consideration is an important part of good and able governance. But religion, ethnicity and region cannot always and fully determine our path. To forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, we must break free of old binds. We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics.”

Don’t Allow APC Rig Your Vote This Time — Atiku Tells Osun Voters

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar on Thursday, urged voters in Osun state to protect their votes to curb the ruling party from stealing their votes again.

Atiku spoke in Osogbo while canvassing votes for the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at the party’s mega rally at the party secretariat.

“This is a PDP state. Don’t let them steal your votes this time. They have been rigging election here since 12 years ago. In 2010 they rigged through the court, in 2018 they rig through the ballot.

“Don’t allow them steal this time around. Make sure your vote and defend your votes, if you allow them, you will go back to darkness”, he said.

Defection: Appeal Court Sacks PDP Assembly Member In Bayelsa

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has declared the seat of the member representing Brass Constituency 1 in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Charles, vacant.

His removal as a legislator is the sequel to his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The APC Instituted a legal action against Charles seeking his removal after he defected to the PDP.

Hon. Charles won the case at the Federal High Court in Yenagoa presided over by Justice Isa Dashen, which prompted the APC to proceed to the Appeal Court.

But the Justices of the Court of Appeal, Joseph Shagaor Ikyegh, Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole, and Olabode .A. Adegbehingbe, in the suit numbered CA/PH/79/2022, said the decision of the lower Court (Federal High Court) delivered on the 11th of January on the legality of his defection is set aside and that upon his defection from the APC being the platform on which he was elected, Hon. Daniel Charles should have vacated his seat at the State House of Assembly on 14th April 2021 by the virtue of sections 109(1)(g) and (2) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Appeal, which had Hon. Daniel Charles, the Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Abraham Ngobere and the State House of Assembly as respondents, also declared that the 2nd and third respondents (speaker and the House of Assembly) were under constitutional and legal duties by the virtue of section 109(1)(g) and (2) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to declare the seat of the First Respondent (Hon. Daniel Charles)as member representing Brass Constituency 1 at the Bayelsa House of Assembly vacant.

The court also issued an order declaring the seat vacant and directed that the 1st respondent (Daniel Charles) should, with immediate effect, return all salaries, allowances, and other emoluments received from the 14th of April, 2021 as a member representing the Brass Constituency 1 of the State House of Assembly. It also ordered that the three respondents pay the cost of N250,000 each to the Appellant (the APC).

Reacting to the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Charles described it as unfortunate, considering his inalienable right to freedom of association.

He said he believes strongly that the Supreme Court will give a favourable judgment and ratify his mandate. He enjoined the people of Brass Constituency I, especially his supporters, to remain calm and hopeful as he plans to appeal the verdict in the coming days.

“From the very moment we joined the PDP, the plan of the opposition party was to distract us with litigation, but by the grace of God, we will continue to remain focused and deliver the dividends of democracy to our people. So there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
