2023: 192 Lawmakers Plan Defection From APC – Babachir Lawal Cries Out

The Planning and Strategy Committee of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation has alerted the All Progressives Congress to the possibility of about 192 National Assembly members defecting from the party to other parties following the outcome of the party primaries that made some members lose a return ticket.

The committee, chaired by a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, made the recommendation in its ‘Report on the Actualisation of the Presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Coming 2023 General Election.’

The committee, which highlighted the factors the party should consider in settling for a running mate and the possible choices the party could choose from, asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); the party’s presidential candidate, Tinubu; leaders of the National Assembly and other party leaders to intervene. It warned that the defection of the members might affect the party.

The committee’s report, a copy of which our correspondent sighted on Saturday, had 23 members, 22 of whom signed the document except a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu.

There is a need to reach out to the principal officers of the National Assembly and the party leadership at the national, state, zonal and local government levels to mitigate and assuage the aggrieved persons.

It is worrisome that 22 serving senators and 170 National Assembly members are set to defect from the APC. There is no doubt that this can weaken our strength and there is an urgent need for intervention from the President, our presidential candidate, governors, leaders of the National Assembly, the APC national, state, zonal and local working committees as well as influential party stakeholders.”

2023: PDP Replies Umahi, Says Ebonyi Is PDP State
Governor Dave Umahi

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has revealed that he was still saddened by the outcome of the presidential primaries of both All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party respectively.

Umahi, who doubles as the Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum, expressed displeasure over the role played by the people of the South-East geopolitical zone, saying the zone hid and seek attitude during the primaries, raised a question about their said agitation for Igbo Presidency.

A statement signed by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, said Umahi stated this in Abakaliki, while receiving members of the Ebonyi State Founding Fathers, on Saturday.

According to the Governor, the South-Easterners didn’t demonstrate the clamour of the Igbo Presidency, during the primaries.

The statement, which was obtained by our correspondent, quoted Umahi as saying, “My heart is saddened by the outcome of the APC and PDP presidential primaries because when we were saying that we are clamouring for South-East president and it was time to demonstrate it.

“The South-East people couldn’t demonstrate it, so, it caused a lot of doubts on the sincerity of South-East on their quest but if not for anything else, I have achieved a state with proven character and content, we must be very proud of ourselves and we know that in God’s time, it will come to pass.

“My defection to All Progressives Congress, APC, was in the interest of the state and South-East in general but it was misjudged because if our people had taken my reasons seriously, probably, we would have been differently treated especially in the party that we have invested so much in since 1999. But at the end of the day, I became a prophet because all I predicted came to pass.”

The Islamic scholars strongly advised Tsafe to divorce his wife but said he would not do so.

The scholars, it was further learnt, acknowledged the legitimacy of the children they gave birth to, but insisted that the marriage had no legitimacy any longer since the problem was brought to the attention of the couple.

Following his insistence, the Tsafe Local Government Hisbah Committee took over the case and filed a suit before an Upper Area Court and later, Higher Sharia Court. The Higher Sharia court had adjourned the case to July 21.

Meanwhile, Tsafe, it was learnt, took the matter to Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi after he complained that it was a plan to introduce Izala doctrine into the matter. But it was gathered that Sheikh Bauchi reaffirmed the earlier position of the Tsafe scholars, but he insisted on remaining with his wife.

Lauretta Onochie, President Mohammadu Buhari’s aide on social media, has called on relevant authorities to go after people who are opposing the APC and its presidential candidate for religious reasons.

It is common knowledge that the decision of Bola Tinubu the presidential candidate of APC to pick a fellow Muslim, Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 elections has attracted criticism from various corners.

While religious groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria have kicked against the APC’s decision to fly a same-faith presidential ticket, some notable stalwarts of the party have resigned their membership in protest of the decision

Following this development, Onochie took to her Twitter account to share the Electoral Act 2022 On Religion which stipulates that any candidate, person, or association that engages in a campaign or broadcasting based on religious reasons for the purpose of opposing a political party or the election of a candidate commits an offense and can be subjected to a fine of 1 million naira or 12 years imprisonment.

She also called on the appropriate agency responsible for enforcing this law to do their job.
