The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Isaac O. Akinmoyede has called on SPY vehicle plate number users in zone to return same to their various state commands in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba banning the use.

The AIG gave this advise in a release on Sunday by the PPRO in charge of the zone, SP Yisrael Ini-Obong Jack-Rabin headquartered in Umuahia Abia State.

AIG Isaac Akinmoyede therefore has directed the Commissioners of Police within the Zonal Command – Imo, Abia and Ebonyi States to comply immediately by commencing enforcement of the ban without any exception.

He said irrespective of whether such vehicle plate numbers have police authorisation or not, the latest IGP’s directive invalidates any authorisation earlier issued.

SPY vehicle plate number users are therefore urged to revert to the originally registered plate numbers to avoid embarasment or sanctions.

The release read in part, “The measure is to strengthen the internal security achitectural mechanisms towards effective service delivery and to avoid unnecessary criminal abuse of some previleges attached to the use of the SPY Number Plates by certain categories of persons and corporate bodies in the Country.

“The AIG therefore, advises private individuals and corporate bodies with Vehicles using SPY Number Plates to respectfully revert to the use of the originally registered national licensed plate numbers for such vehicles. Those affected are further advised to voluntarily return those hitherto used SPY Number Plates to the Police Authority through the Office Of the PPROs in the State Police Command Headquarters of Zone, namely Owerri, Umuahia and Abakaliki.”

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, further directs Commissioners of Police to warn the enforcement Officers to enforce the IGP’s directives professionally without any form of indiscipline.

He also urged them to arrest promptly, security details attached to VIPs that may resist the enforcement of this very important directive so that appropriate action can be taken against defaulters.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Abia State, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe popularly known as Don Lulu has congratulated the governor-elect of Osun State, Sen. Ademola Adeleke on his victory at the just concluded governorship election.

Igbokwe who contested and came second at Abia PDP governorship primaries said the opposition must accept the collective decision of the people of Osun State.

In a congratulatory message on Sunday, he tasked the incoming governor to demonstrate commitment to serving the people with the mandate secured.

Sen. Adeleke on Saturday achieved a hard-fought victory over the state’s incumbent Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state’s governorship election.

Senator Adeleke, 62, riding on the back of a campaign aimed at developing the state and retrieving what he says is his stolen mandate, secured 403,371 votes, 28,344 more than his closest rival, the incumbent governor. Governor Oyetola polled 375,027 votes.

It was enough for the Returning Officer of the election, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos to declare him winner and governor-elect.

I declare that Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected,” Professor Ogundipe declared, sparking jubilation among Adeleke’s supporters.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Adamu, says he will never underrate the power of the opposition parties, including the Labour Party, ahead of next year’s elections.

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party PDP have said that the victory of Senator Ademola Adeleke is a signal that it is time for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vacate the seat of power.

In a statement on Sunday, Chairman, PDP Governors Forum, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, welecomed Adeleke to the group, saying the Osun people reposed their trust and confidence in the governor-elect, because they could see his heart, which is full of love and concern for the wellbeing of his people.

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Lagos, Kemi Nelson has passed away.

The 66-year-old politician and federal government official died on Sunday.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s spokesman, Gboyega Akosile confirmed her demise.

A notorious leader of bandits in Zamfara State, Ado Aleru, has been turbaned as Sarkin Fulani (Chief of Fulanis) of Yandoto Emirate by the Emir of Yandoto Daji Emirate, Aliyu Garba Marafa.

The turbaning ceremony took place on Saturday evening, hours after the emirate had suspended the process indefinitely.

Several bandit group leaders and lieutenants arrived at the venue of the occasion on several motorbikes to celebrate with Aleru.

A resident of the area who was at the ceremony told Channels Television that the decision to make the bandits’ leader a chief was aimed at finding lasting peace in Tsafe and the Yandoton Daji Emirates, and other areas that were regularly attacked by Aleru-led gangs.

“It was aimed at providing lasting peace in the emirate, the emir told us that there is a peace accord between the emirate and the bandit group,” the resident said.

An official from the palace who pleaded anonymity also said that the title of Sarkin Fulani was conferred on Alero considering his present status as a ‘peace-maker’ within the emirate.

Asked if the state government was aware of the development, he responded in the affirmative.

“We did not have any reinforcement from outside or from government; these people called us for peace between us and them, what can we do? It is only to accept the peace, we cannot do otherwise.

The emirate which was created with a second-class emir comprises Yandoton Daji, Keta, Kizara, Bawa Kwanga, Kwaren Ganuwa, Danjibga, and Kuncin Kalgo districts with headquarters at Birnin Yandoto under Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.

Efforts to get reactions from the state government were not successful as the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Mamman Tsafe, who is also from the local government area neither responded to several phone calls put across to him, nor reply to the text message sent.

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a man, Ahmed Ibrahim, who specialises in stealing television sets from hotels in the state.

It was gathered that the suspect would book rooms in hotels and when it is time to check out, he would steal the television set in the hotel rooms.

Moreso, it was learnt that the suspect had robbed two other hotels of their television sets. He was arrested with the stolen goods while attempting to travel with them to Abuja for sales.

The Edo State Command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, said the suspect was arrested on July 14, for burglary and stealing.

He said the Command received a complaint from, Mr Adekunle Olalekun, the manager of Mindcast Hotel, Ekpoma, Edo State, on July 13, that Ibrahim, 24, booked three rooms in the hotel.

“Shortly after booking the rooms, Ibrahim left the hotel unnoticed with his luggage that he came in with, unknown to them, three television sets in the three rooms he booked were what the suspect packaged in his luggage when checking out.”

The PPRO said through discreet investigation and intelligence gathering, the suspect was traced to a Hausa cattle market in Ekpoma where he was arrested.

Nwanbuzor said during his arrest, it was discovered that the suspect had neatly packed the plasma television sets in readiness to take them to Abuja for sale.

He said the suspect has confessed to have stolen the hotel’s three plasma television sets and also six other plasma televisions from two separate hotels.

He assured that the suspect will soon be arraigned in court.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Omipidan on Sunday, Oyetola urged his supporters to remain calm and urged security operatives to ensure their is no breakdown of law and order across the state.

He, however, noted that the party would be responding appropriately after studying the results and consulting with critical stakeholders of the party.

He adds: “I am calling on our supporters to remain calm, and the people of the State to go about their businesses without let or hindrance.

“I also urge security operatives to ensure maintenance of law and order, to prevent break down of law and order”.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, has emerged as the 31st President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

Maikyau, SAN, polled a total of 22, 342 votes to defeat his major challenger, Chief J. K. Gadzama, SAN, who got 10, 842 votes out of a total of 34, 564 votes that were cast for the position.

The 3rd contender for the NBA top position, Mr. Taidi Gunu, garnered 1, 380 votes, representing 4% of a total number of 34, 554 votes that were cast for the position.

Other national officers of the NBA that emerged from the election that commenced by 12am on Saturday, July 16, and ended by 12pm, are: Mrs Linda Bala as 1st Vice President of the association, Mr. Clement Ugo as 2nd Vice President and Mrs. Amanda Demechi-Asagba as the 3rd Vice President.

Others are: Mr. Adesina Adegbite as General Secretary, Mr Daniel Kip Ka-Ayli as Assistant General Secretary, Ms. Chinyere Obasi as National Welfare Secretary, Mr Habeeb Lawal as National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawole Ajiboye as Assistant Publicity Secretary and Anze-Bishop Ladidi as the Treasurer.

20 lawyers were equally elected as members of the NBA General Council to represent the Western, Eastern and Northern zones.

Announcing the election results on Sunday, Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the NBA, ECNBA, Mr Ayodele Akintunde, SAN, disclosed that out of a total of 59, 392 records of eligible voters from the NBA database, 59, 388 records were okayed to vote.

Akintunde added that while 1, 346 emails that were sent out to some of the eligible voters bounced back, only 34, 809 lawyers, representing 58. 61% of the membership strength of the association, participated in the election that was conducted electronically.

He noted that some of the common complaints the ECNBA Secretariat received, included the inability of some lawyers to correctly input their Supreme Court Number, SCN, as instructed, wrong/invalid contact information, no voting links, as well as multiple email reminders.

Meanwhile, in his speech, the newly elected President of the NBA, Maikyau, SAN, while thanking God for his victory, urged all those that contested the election and lost, to join hands with his team to move the association forward.

Maikyau, SAN, commended the outgoing President of the NBA, Mr. Olumide Akpata, SAN, for his efforts to reposition the association.

He equally implored the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to understudy the technology-driven electoral system of the NBA.

He said there was need for INEC to leaverage on technology in such a way that electorates across the federation could cast their votes from the comfort of their homes, as was done by the NBA in its election he described as free, fair and credible.

Maikyau, SAN, said the NBA under his leadership, would continue to speak truth to power and to do all within its mandate to promote the rule of law and protect human rights in the country.

On his part, the outgoing President of the NBA, Mr. Akpata, SAN, while commending the members of the NBA electoral committee, urged those that lost at the poll to accept the results in good faith and join hands to move the association forward.

Akpata further revealed that ahead of the 2023 general elections, he said the NBA has mandated its public interest litigation committee to approach the INEC to verify an allegation that it allowed the substitution of names of candidates that did not participate in primary election of their political parties.

We will go and find out how true the allegation is and take it up from there”, he added, just as he commended the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Mike Igini, describing him as “our member that has stood out as the lone voice of reason”.
