Ekiti Election: INEC Chairman Yakubu Issues Warning Ahead Of Poll

Mike Igini, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa Ibom State, has said that some politicians who contested for more than one elective office risk conviction for electoral offences for violation of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Igini disclosed this on Tuesday while featuring on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.

According to him: “A person who signs a nomination paper or result form as a candidate in more than one constituency at the same election [commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a maximum term of imprisonment for two years].

“Section 115 (D) of the 2022 Electoral Act stipulates that no person shall sign, or obtain more than one form as a candidate for different elections.

“Some people are claiming that they participated in one election, that they filled two forms; it is ignorance of the law and it is not an excuse.

“We’re preventing them from being candidates for prison and they’re calling our names everywhere.”

Recall that current Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, contested for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won by former Lagos State governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lawan has been involved in a tussle for the ticket of Yobe State North Senatorial District with another aspirant, Bashir Machina.

Also, the two-term Governor of Akwa-Ibom State and immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, who recently withdrew from the APC presidential race, has been fighting for the ticket of Akwa Ibom North West with a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Udom Ekpoudom, believed to have been won by the latter.

University teachers won a major battle yesterday: the government is ready to meet most of their demands.

Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu got marching orders from President Muhammadu Buhari to end the industrial actions by university-based unions.

The President also directed the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to hand off negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ngige’s role will only be limited to a conciliator when it is necessary.

ASUU had repeatedly accused Ngige of blackmail and being a stumbling block to the negotiations.

The President met with some ministers and heads of Federal Government agencies involved in the negotiations at the Presidential Villa.

He directed that the ongoing negotiation between the Federal Government and ASUU must be finalised within two to three weeks.

He ordered Adamu to henceforth coordinate, lead talks, and harmonise terms with ASUU immediately.

Adamu was also mandated to meet with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to work out payment details for the striking lecturers.

ASUU said it was open to considering the 100 per cent pay rise being proposed by the Federal Government.

The union, however, said the government was yet to reach out to it on the new pay offer.

The Nation exclusively reported yesterday that a 100 per cent pay rise was being put forward and that the President had waded into the crisis.

But there is more cause for optimism as universities may also immediately get over N320billion revitalisation funds out of the outstanding N1.3trillion promised by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to a reliable source, who spoke in confidence, Buhari stamped his feet at a session he had with Adamu and Dr Ngige in the Presidential Villa.

The source described the meeting as “frank and emotional” because the President wanted an immediate solution to the closure of universities.

The source said having discovered errors in the negotiation modules, President Buhari asked the Minister of Education to “henceforth coordinate, lead talks and harmonise terms with ASUU immediately.”

The source added: “Before the session, the President had received from Adamu the report of the Federal Renegotiation Team and ASUU, which contained some vital recommendations to resolve the six-month industrial action.

“Having reviewed the efforts made by the two ministers and all agencies, Buhari said the talks should now be handled by the Minister of Education, who raised Prof. Nimi Briggs 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement Renegotiation Team.

“The final stage of the pact with ASUU will now be domiciled in the Ministry of Education.

“But the Minister of Labour will now serve as a conciliator between the two parties if there are issues.

“Buhari put a caveat that the terms of the agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU must be completed within two to three weeks so that universities can reopen.”

It was learnt that Adamu met with Federal Government Renegotiation Team after his shuttle to the Presidential Villa.

A government source, who spoke in confidence, said the Buhari administration has agreed to pay enhanced salaries to the lecturers and it may release a quarter of the outstanding N1.3trillion revitalisation funds agreed by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

The source added: “About N320billion Revitalisation Funds may soon be released to universities.

“The government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, asked the National Universities Commission (NUC) to do a comparison of the salary scale of Professors in some African countries.

“The review of pay in some countries was to enable how much increase the nation’s economic shock can accommodate.

“The NUC was forthright in saying that the pay of a Professor in Nigeria was low than in other countries.

“Some of the monthly pay highlights of a professor were as follows: South Africa ($5,200) for a Professor; Rwanda ($2,900); Uganda/Ghana ($1,000); Kenya ($2,000); Nigeria ($690).

“The government has accepted to increase the pay of a varsity professor to $1,300 per month.

“The Minister of Education, the National Salaries and Wages Commission, the Federal Ministry of Finance and other agencies will now work out modalities for the payment of the enhanced salaries.”

Among those at the meeting with the President were Adamu, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning Dr. Zainab Ahmed; Dr Ngige and the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.

Others were the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan; Chairman of National Salaries Income and Wages Commission Ekpo Nta and the Director-General, Budget Office, Ben Akabueze.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA Council Member, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick has showered encomiums on nine-time African champions, Super Falcons for a valiant display despite several odds and obstacles in their Women AFCON semi-final encounter against host nation Morocco in Rabat on Monday night.

“Of course, we would have been happy to be in the Final and chase a 10th title. But I am happy with the performance of the team and the way and manner they approached the game despite all sorts of setbacks and intimidation.

“To play 50 minutes of a game with only nine players is not an easy task. The Super Falcons gave their all and were truly fabulous. They had the ‘Nigeria spirit’ in them and showed a sense of patriotism, were dogged, and refused to give up. Penalties are forever a lottery, so it could have gone either way. I commend the team for the outing.”

The expulsion of midfielder Halimat Ayinde in the 49th minute reduced Nigeria to 10 players before referee Maria Rivet from Mauritius handed forward Rasheedat Ajibade a red card in the 70th minute, which cut Nigeria’s playing strength by two for the remaining 50 minutes (20 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time) of the thrilling encounter.

Uchenna Kanu had a touch on Nigeria’s goal in the 62nd minute though it was recorded as an own goal by Yasmin Mrabet, and Nigeria could have put the match in the bag when substitute Gift Monday rocked the crossbar with a well-taken shot from outside the box 11 minutes into extra time.

“Our girls did a massive job on a night they were not only depleted but challenged by laser lights trained on their eyes by the crowd. I am enamoured by their resilience and tenacity. Pinnick added that he is delighted with the strong pipeline at the moment, with the U20 girls and U17 girls having also qualified for their respective FIFA World Cup tournaments and boasting interesting prospects who can easily fit into the senior team

“The supply line looks strong enough to continue to present us with good and ambitious players for the coming years. We will have a delightful combination of experienced and youthful players for the World Cup finals.”

Already, the NFF has secured a total of four friendly matches for the Falcons in the Fall, with the team scheduled to play the United States Women’s National Team in Kansas City and Washington D. C in September, and also to fly to Japan to take on that country’s women’s squad in Kobe in October. Both opponents offer diversity in style and approach.

Two students of Government Secondary School (GSS), Bukuru, Jos South LGA of Plateau State, have explained why they returned the N250,000 they found on their school’s premises.

The students, Na’ima Usaini Yusuf and her classmate, Righteous Samuel Genesis, found the money during break time and took it to their teacher because “it is morally wrong to hide money that is not ours,” they said..

Narrating why they returned the money to Daily Trust, Na’ima said, “When we found the money, it didn’t occur to me that we should spend it because it wasn’t ours. I told my friend that we should look for the owner through the school.

“My friend quickly responded that it is forbidden to share the money because it wasn’t from our sweat. That was why we returned the money to one of our teachers.”

Responding to her thought to return the money, Righteous said, “I felt we should not spend the money because my parents always taught me that whenever I find something on the ground I should look for people around and give it to them to look for the owner. I know that it is not good to spend what doesn’t belong to me. I also believe that whatever is not mine and will never be mine.”

Ezekiel Yarima, the teacher who the students returned the money to, said, “I was surprised to see them returning a huge amount of money and asking me to look for the owner. When they brought the money, I was so happy. I started asking who lost the money since it was found within the school premises. Fortunately, the owner of the money was a teacher. He explained to me beyond reasonable doubt and I became convinced that the money was his. I asked him to come with me to my office where I handed the money back to him.”

A 25-year-old man died after falling into a well at Omu-Aran, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The Head of Media and Publicity at Kwara Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed this in a statement issued in Ilorin, said that firemen were able to recover the corpse and handed it over to a family member of the deceased in the presence of police operatives.

According to findings, the deceased went to fetch water at the well very early in the morning but fell inside the well after a slip, Adekunle stated.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has said the 2023 general elections will be the best ever in the history of the country.

He said this on Tuesday in Abuja when he received delegations of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and that of the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

He noted that the meeting was the first after last Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, assuring that INEC would improve on its successes in subsequent elections.

Pro Mahmood said, “We assure you that we will continue to work not only hard, but even harder to deliver the 2023 general elections. As for the preparation for the 2023 general elections, I want to assure you that we promised Nigerians that Ekiti was going to be good and Ekiti was a good election.

“We promised that Osun was going to be better, Osun was a better election. We are promising that the 2023 general elections will be our best elections ever and we are committed to delivering the best elections ever.”

Speaking earlier, the Secretary of State of Ohio, United States, and leader of the delegations, Mr Frank LaRose, commended INEC for its various efforts at improving on the conduct of elections in Nigeria.

LaRose, who is also an election commissioner in Ohio, described his first visit to Nigeria as a great learning opportunity and urged INEC to keep improving on Nigeria’s electoral system.

Notorious Drug Dealer Arrested In Jigawa

Operatives of the Jigawa State Police Command have arrested a suspected drug dealer and recovered 265 wraps of substance suspected to be marijuana.

The state police spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, July 19, said the suspect was arrested on his way to criminal hideouts and black spots.

The PPRO said, “On 18/07/2022 at about 2030hrs, Police Squad attached to Auyo Division led by Insp Rayyanu Ashahabu while acting on intelligence, intercepted one notorious drug dealer in Auyo town.”

He added that “During the raid, two hundred and sixty-five (265) rubs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp, eighty-nine (89) pieces of intoxicated D5_ Diazepam drugs, sixty-two BZ drugs, twelve (12) Rizla papers, and one scissor were found from him as exhibits.

“In the course of the investigation, the suspect made a confessional statement that he obtained the same from his co-supplier, one Sule Mai Kunne ‘m’ of Adaha Village Auyo LGA, now at large.

“Effort is on top gear to trail his accomplices. The suspect will be charged to court of law upon completion of the investigation

“Rigorous patrols and raids on criminal hideouts and black spots will be sustained across the twenty-seven 27 LGAs in the State.”

Cholera Kills Five In Kano

The government of Kano State has confirmed that it had recorded five Cholera-related deaths in the state.

It also added that very strong preventive measures had been put in place to tackle the outbreak.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the state commissioner for health, Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa at a news conference in Kano.

Tsanyawa said on April 16, 2022, a case of watery diarrhea and vomiting suspected to be due to cholera was reported in the Dambatta Local Government Area of the state, which was promptly investigated.

According to him, since then, a total of 189 cases in 20 LGAs were recorded, out of which 184 have fully recovered, 0 active cases, and five deaths.

He said Nigeria was still affected by cholera, especially during the rainy season, due to poor personal and environmental hygiene, sanitation, poor waste management, and open defecation, all of which promote feco-oral transmission, which is also the causative agent of the disease.

“You may wish to know that cholera outbreak is seasonal and is a bacterial infection of humans caused by v.cholerae, which is a Gram-negative bacillus and any resident of a community under investigation, aged two years and above, with acute watery diarrhea with or without vomiting should be immediately evaluated for suspected cholera disease,” he said.

Also, the commissioner thanked the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, for his commitment to providing adequate and qualitative health care services to the good people of the state, in order to eliminate cholera outbreaks, alongside other diseases in the state.

The lead counsel to the embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor has described as fake news alleged missing of Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody in Abuja.

The IPOB leader is currently standing trial before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja division over terrorism related charges.

Barr. Ejiofor while expressing disappointment with the refusal of the DSS to grant authorized family members access to Nnamdi Kanu in its custody on the excised that authorized handlers, who were to receive the visiting team were out of the facility on other official assignment, he said is not the first time the DSS is denying authorised persons access to the IPOB leader.

He further clarified that Kanu’s authorized family members visited him last week Thursday, being the 14th day of July, 2022, where spent ample time with him, insisting that he is not missing from custody as reported on the social media.

He stated further “In view of the unpleasant consequences the legal team is being exposed to in the course of managing avoidable distractions arising from unhealthy outburst from certain quarters, it has become compelling that we squarely address the following concerns:

“1) We respectfully wish to urge UmuChineke to henceforth, desist from listening to anybody or person(s), who publicly dish out ORDER(S) through their social media handles, claiming such Orders as purportedly emanating from Onyendu.

“2) Onyendu is specifically and primarily concerned with legal steps being taken by his team of lawyers to ensure his unconditional release from custody, which methodology are usually prohibited from being discussed in our updates/publicly.

“3) Onyendu only relays his message(s) through his lawyers whenever issues of compelling public concerns require his public view. Please note that Onyendu is a freedom fighter, presently held in solitary confinement at the custody of the DSS, and currently undergoing persecution in the hands of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN). Nevertheless, he must surely regain his freedom and it will be soon.

“4) Every well meaning supporter of Onyendu’s cause should be more interested in protecting the legal measures being taken to ensure his freedom, rather than sabotaging them.

“5) UmuChineke must treat with the greatest circumspect, the resolve of those, who by their unhealthy pronouncement(s) are directly interfering with the strategies of the legal team, and further jeopardizing the welfare of ONYENDU, and it must STOP NOW!

“Atụọlụ́ ọmalụ ọ̀malụ́, atụọlụ́ ofeke, ofenye isi n’ọfịa.

“Thank you all for keeping faith with Onyendu’s admonition for peaceful atmosphere in the entire South-East. Please continue to remain law abiding as you have always demonstrated.
