Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi looks on during his address to the lower house of parliament ahead of a vote of confidence for the government after he tendered his resignation last week in the wake of a mutiny by a coalition partner, in Rome, Italy July 21, 2022.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday, plunging the European Union’s third-largest economy into fresh political turmoil.

Draghi’s resignation comes after several key parties in his coalition — the powerful 5-Star movement, the largest party in the country’s coalition government, center-right Forza Italia and the far-right League — boycotted a confidence vote in the government Wednesday night.
Mattarella, who accepted the resignation, is scheduled to meet with the speakers of Parliament on Thursday afternoon, the presidential palace said in a statement. The next step is to call for a snap election.
Last week, Draghi first tendered his resignation after the 5-Star movement withdrew its support in a parliamentary confidence vote on a package designed to tackle Italy’s cost-of-living crisis. Draghi had previously said that he would not lead a government that did not include 5-Star.
That resignation, however, was rejected by Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, who urged him to stay and find a solution.
On Thursday, the FTSEMIB, Italy’s main stock market, was down more than 2.5% after the country’s government was left on the brink of collapse.

Former Chelsea star, Glen Johnson has urged the Blues to splash out the cash in a bid to sign West Ham star, Declan Rice this summer.

Johnson, who spent four seasons at Stamford Bridge, wants the Blues to make more investments and lure Rice from West Ham.

In a chat with Genting Casino, Johnson stated that will help bring stability to Chelsea’s midfield.

“I think Chelsea should go all out for Rice before the deadline,” Johnson told Genting Casino.

“Everyone knows they are interested in Rice…and I find it strange that it is taking so long.

“Rice’s impact at West Ham is huge. No team wants to lose their best player. He’s the main man and is the key to everything they do, but I think we all know the clock is ticking for his time being at West Ham,” he said.

Chelsea have already brought in the likes of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and are still active in the transfer market.

Group Carpets Buhari, APC For Plunging More Nigerians Into Poverty

President Muhammadu Buhari

The Middle Belt Movement for Justice and Peace, MBMJP, yesterday raised concern over the steady slide in the value of the Nigerian currency, lamenting that at an exchange rate of about N630 to a Dollar, the All Progressives Congress, APC, led administration is superintending the shameful crash of the Naira due to poor economic policies.

The MBMJP in a statement by the Convener, Joe Bukka, among others, said “The value of a country’s currency tells a lot about the strength of that country. That is why we are insisting that this government cannot justify what it has done to the value of the Naira which is our symbol of strength.

“It is certainly unacceptable that our currency is miserably low in value under the watch of this government, exchanging for as low as N630 to a Dollar. Who could have imagined that this would be our fate after seven years of an administration that inherited an exchange rate of one Dollar to N197.

“As a result of the very poor economic judgment of this government, millions of Nigerians are passing through the worst economic crunch anyone can think of and there is no end in sight. Even smaller neighbouring countries that looked up to Nigeria for survival are now better of. That is how bad our situation in this country is under the watch of the APC le

“It is sad that today life has become brutish, the average Nigerian cannot feed, unlike the situation before 2015. Today in this country the life of the Nigerian has become worthless because bandits and armed herders are roaming our communities abducting and killing innocent Nigerians at will.

“Our citizens who were kidnapped by these marauders have been abandoned to their fate and left to die in the custody of their abductors because in the estimation of our leaders the life of a Nigerian is worth nothing.”

“Our children who are supposed to be in school are wasting their youthful years at home because of the strike by university teachers and workers and the government does not care because the children of our leaders are all schooling overseas. That is the sad reality we are living with but we know that this will certainly not last forever.”

Shettima: You’ve Registered For God’s Judgement – Christian Leaders To APC, ‘Hired Bishops’

Shettima Unveiling: We Were Promised N100K, Paid N40K – ‘Bishop’ Claims

A renowned lawyer and diplomat, Justice Osai Ahiakwo has condemned yesterday’s allegation that the national ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, hired some persons who adorned themselves in different cassocks of Christian leaders to grace the unveiling of Alhaji Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno State, as Bola Ahmed’s presidential running mate.

Ahiakwo said the action portrayed the political atmosphere as ludicrous, adding that they were attempting to reduce the Christian faith to ridicule.

He said the persons were not Christian leaders but impostors, stressing that both the sponsors and the hired ones would face God’s wrath.

Also, two top clergymen, including the Bishop of Anglican Communion, Calabar Diocese, Professor Nneoyi Egbe, as well as the General Secretary of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star College of Bishops, Archbishop Mike Ntuk expressed shock and utter disappointment over the development.

Ntuk said, “It is indeed a very sad development. It shows absolute disregard for God. It is extremely embarrassing.

“Why did they not chose to embarrass Muslim leaders by hiring Imams in their regalia to such event? It shows the depth some political leaders can descend in the course of their desperation for power. It really is a shame the quality of leadership and deceit we are throwing up. Unfortunately, God is a Nigerian and He’ll meet them when they least expect and pull away the carpet from under their feet..”

On his part, the Anglican Communion Bishop said, “They have registered themselves for God’s judgement. Except they, including those that hired them to confess and repent, they are facing condemnation.”

National Grid Collapse: Atiku Proposes Solutions To Solve Electricity Problem

Atiku Abubakar

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has proposed a solution to the continued collapse of the national grid.

Atiku proposed innovative financing of infrastructure in the power sector.

He said the financing would involve the facilitation of a review of the financial, legal, and regulatory environment to promote private investment in the power sector.

In a post on his Facebook page, Atiku wrote: “I am reliably informed that there was a total National Grid Collapse at precisely 12:23pm today. This is one collapse too many. It is the 6th time this is happening this year alone.

“Due to the priority that I place on the power sector upon which the successes of other sectors are hinged, I am proposing innovative financing of infrastructure that will involve the facilitation of a review of the financial, legal, and regulatory environment to promote private investment in power, among other sectors.

“I’ll promote the incentivisation, with tax breaks, a consortium of private sector institutions to establish an Infrastructure Debt Fund (IDF) to primarily mobilise domestic and international private resources for the financing and delivery of large infrastructure projects across all the sectors of the economy.

“The IDF will have an initial investment capacity of approximately US$20 billion. In addition, I’ll cause the creation of an Infrastructure Development Credit Guarantee Agency to complement the operation of the IDF by de-risking investments in infrastructure to build investor confidence in taking risks and investing capital.”

TCN Gives Update On Collapse Of National Grid

NUEE Again, Threatens To Shut Down The National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday said restoration of the national grid is almost completed following its collapse on Wednesday.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

Mbah said that the national grid experienced system disturbance at about 11:27a.m. on Wednesday, but that its restoration was almost completed as at 11:00p.m.

”The incident was as a result of a sudden drop in system frequency from 49.94 Hertz (HZ) to 47.36Hz, which created system instability,” she said.

Hertz is a unit of frequency which replaces the earlier term of one cycle per second (cps).

Mbah said that reports from the National Control Centre (NCC), revealed that the collapse was precipitated by the tripping of a unit with a load of 106 Megawatts (MW) in one of the generating stations due to “Exhaust over Temperature”.

She said the tripping pulled out other grid-connected units in the plant, which resulted in aggregated generation loss of 457MW.

“A train of events ensued, culminating in the collapse of the national grid.

“As obtainable in all systems, when a component of the electric power system is defective, the entire configuration is vitiated,” she said

Mbah said investigation was going on to establish the cause of the failure.

She said the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) appreciated the understanding of the government and consumers of electricity within and outside the country.

Mbah said that NESI was committed to leveraging on interventions instituted thus far to enhance power supply reliability.

Clerics At Shettima’s Unveiling Are Not Hired, Says Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated the clerics at the unveiling of his running mate Senator Kashim Shettima were not fake.

He said they were at the event, which was open to all, as genuine well-wishers.

The former Lagos Governor, in a statement by The Tinubu Campaign Organisation (TCO), said the viral videos and pictures of the clerics at the event were the handiworks of political distractors.

The statement by the Director of Media and Communication of the organisation, Bayo Onanuga, described the development as unwarranted distractions.

APC presented Senator Shettima to the public and its various organs as the running mate to the party’s presidential standard-bearer at the well-attended ceremony at Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

But many faulted the presence of Christian clerics at the event, alleging they were hired and fake.

But TCO, in a statement, explained: “The event was an open affair, which allowed members of the public to attend, including the clergymen and some others now being derided by hirelings of the opposition.

“We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.

“They are church leaders who genuinely believe that Nigerians must eschew politics of hatred and religious bigotry and rather embrace politics of peace and nation building.

“We, therefore, deplore the hysterical twisting of the presence of these men and women in cassocks and the false accusation against our candidates, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Shettima.

“The orchestrated social media sensation over the presence of the men is needless and all calculated to detract from the huge success recorded at the momentous event on Wednesday.

“We believe Nigerians are too wise and discerning to see through this shenanigan. Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate and our great party are working very hard to provide purposeful leadership and good progressive governance that will improve the quality of life of Nigerians.

“We are well aware that the opposition parties and the sponsors of the social media charade are jittery and threatened by the intimidating political credentials of our candidates. The only way they hope to shift the attention of public scrutiny away from their uninspiring candidates and credentials is to create social media distraction.

“Our campaign is determined on focusing on core governance issues that affect all Nigerians to confront them and make the desired improvements in the standard of living of our people.”

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fired back at critics who accused his team of hiring street urchins and dressing them as Christian clerics during Wednesday’s unveiling of his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima in Abuja.

In a statement through his campaign organization, Tinubu said the event was open to all, including clergymen.

Accusing the opposition of cashing in on the development to stir unnecessary attacks on APC, Director, Media and Communication of the TInubu Campaign Organization TCO, Bayo Onanuga also described as “unwarranted distractions” the viral pictures and videos of some clergymen and women at the unveiling.

Onanuga, said “the event was an open affair, which allowed members of the public to attend, including the clergymen and some others now being derided by hirelings of the opposition”.

Part of the statement reads; “We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians to believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.

“They are church leaders who genuinely believe that Nigerians must eschew politics of hatred and religious bigotry and rather embrace politics of peace and nation building.

Shettima Unveiling: We Were Promised N100K, Paid N40K – ‘Bishop’ Claims

Facts on how the All Progressives Congress, APC reportedly hired Christian clergymen and women to participate in the unveiling of the party’s vice presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima have emerged.

Recall that Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, unveiled the former Borno State governor as his running mate on Wednesday in Abuja.

Footages of bishops dressed in cassocks who attended the event have flooded social media amid controversy surrounding the same faith ticket.

ABN TV reports that the ruling party is currently receiving backlashes from Nigerians for reportedly hiring fake bishops in a bid to claim support of the Christian community in the presidential race.

One of the ‘bishops’ who spoke with Peoples Gazette, Joseph Odaudu alleged that they were hired from a motor park.

According to him, the APC members promised to pay them N100,000 each.

He, however, lamented that he only got N40,000 instead of the promised N100,000

“They came to meet us at the car park behind Eagle Square and they promised to give me N100,000. They bought food for us and took us to another place where they gave us clothes to dress like Christian leaders and reverend fathers,” Mr Odaudu told The Gazette.

“But after we finished, they only gave me N40,000 and another person said they got only N30,000. I don’t know why they changed our agreement because they said they had N100,000 for us.

“I am a Christian and I am supporting Tinubu but I hate when people lie and fail to deliver on their promises,” he added.

However, the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, TCO, had debunked the reports of fake bishops, saying they are clerics without big names.

TCO, in a statement by its Director of Media and Communication, Mr. Bayo Onanuga declared that the bishops were not hired.
