The Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed October 6 for the trial of a billionaire industrialist Afamefuna Mallinson Ukatu and his worker, Sunday Ifeanyi Ibekwute, on a banned drug charge.
Ukatu is the Managing Director of Mallinson & Partners Ltd, whom the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) alleged imported two containers containing 1,284 cartons of Tramadol worth N22billion in 2019.
The agency also claimed he was behind a N3billion shipment of tramadol linked to the suspended police chief, Abba Kyari.
Justice Peter Lifu fixed the date after upholding Ukatu and Ibekwute’s bail applications filed during their arraignment on July 10, 2022.
Both defendants were admitted to bail in the sum of N100 million with two sureties in the like sum.
One of the sureties, according to the judge, must be an industrialist, specifically, a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), who must be a landed property owner within the court’s jurisdiction.
The second surety must be a Grade Level 15 official either in a Federal or Lagos State establishment.
The judge also ordered the defendants to deposit their international passports with the court’s registry and to file an affidavit of dual citizenship if they hold more than Nigerian nationality.
The judge further directed both defendants to be reporting to the NDLEA every 14 days till the determination of the charges against them.
The court’s registrars, the judge added, should verify that they complied with the bail terms.
Mr. Benson Ndakara, who is counsel for another defendant in the case, Pius Enidom, assured the court that he would try and produce Enidom in court to continue his trial.
Ndakara, expressing disappointment with Enidom’s attitude, told the judge that he had sent his partner to Anambra State to find the defendant.
At the last hearing on a jury 10, the NDLEA brought billionaire and worker before the judge on allegations of conspiracy, trafficking in 322 kilogrammes of Tramadol, unlawful dealing and possession of the said banned drug, in a charge marked FHC/L/159c/2021.
It was alleged that on May 4, 2021, Ukatu, Ibekwute and one Pius Enidom, who the prosecution claimed was on the run, conspired to commit the offences.
Prosecution counsel Mrs. Theresa Asuquo told the court that the alleged offences contravened Sections 14(b); 11 and 11(b) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty. Their counsel, Mr. Emeka Opara (SAN) applied for their bail, saying they would not abscond.
Opara told the court that Mallinson was an industrialist in partnership with the Nigerian Airforce and was also a mass employer of labour, adding that the Ibekwute was one of the first defendant’s employees.
But Asuquo opposed him, arguing that they were a flight risk.
Justice Lifu remanded both defendants in the NCoS’ custody and adjourned till yesterday for ruling on their bail applications.
The judge also issued a Bench warrant against Enidom, following his failure to appear in court despite being issued a hearing notice.
Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has sworn in a new Deputy Chairman for Obingwa Local Government Area, Mr. George Chukwuma Ubani.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at Banquet hall, Government House Umuahia, the Governor congratulated the new Deputy Chairman on his new office and charged him to cooperate with the Council Chairman to move the Local Government forward, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onyebuchi Ememanka said in a statement.
The governor further urged the Deputy Chairman to work with the Chairman to conceptualize projects and programmes that would gladden the hearts of the youths in the area, adding that he should be at the forefront of mobilizing and projecting youths to participate in governance.
The release added “Governor Ikpeazu stressed that the reason behind conducting Local Government elections in the State consecutively through the life of his administration is to deepen democratic ethos and include youths in the governance process. According to him, Local Government tier is an arm of government where youths cut their teeth in politics and reminded him that his appointment is an opportunity to showcase himself in doing what his people want and not for personal aggrandisement.
“Dr. Ikpeazu, who further said that he has been rewarded for his consistency and steadfastness in the party urged him to acquit himself well by leaving a mark on the signs of time.
“In his acceptance speech, the new Deputy Chairman for Obingwa Local Government Area, Mr. George Chukwuma Ubani thanked the Governor for the opportunity given him to serve and promised not to disappoint. The government of Abia State has warned people it described as “mushroom political Parties and their infantile Candidates” against converting the recent loss of accreditation of the state-owned tertiary institution, Abia State Polytechnic Aba into a political tool.
The state government denied any infraction on the withdrawal of the accreditation of the Polytechnic by NBTE, saying it has expended billions of Naira since the commencement of the current administration in 2015.
Barr. Eze Chikamnayo, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy also blamed the ineptitude of past management of the institution for the loss of accreditation.
In a statement on Friday, he said, “Government has been alerted of the unpatriotic activities and attempts by some mushroom political Parties and their infantile Candidates to convert the unfortunate, unwarranted and unprecedented action of the National Board of Technical Education, NBTE against our illustrious Institution, the Abia Polytechnic Aba, into a political instrument and basis for rascalism.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the recent action of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) against Abia State Polytechnic Aba, was not occasioned by Government’s inability to fulfill it’s financial obligations to the institution but by the dysfunctionality and ineptitude of successive Boards and Managements that have bedeviled Abia Poly.
“Specifically, between 2015 and now, over a period of about 78 months of the lifespan of Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu’s visionary and education-friendly administration, a total of over Seven Billion, one hundred and forty-seven million have been remitted to Abia Poly by Government. This does not include the monies collected as School Fees, Caution Fees, sundry levies, and other internal revenue generated by the School and expended without any recourse whatsoever to the State Government.
“Therefore, if the Board and Management of Abia State Polytechnic is owing it’s Staff, it is a self-inflicted regrettable malaise for which those directly involved must be made to face the unsavoury consequences.
“For bringing this avoidable embarrassment to Abians, the Government in addition to approving the immediate dissolution of the Board and Management of Abia Poly will set up a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to unearth the immediate and remote causes of the perennial and intractable challenges of the Institution and bring culprits to justice.
“As a loving and caring Father, His Excellency, Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu has authorised the Secretary to Government to head a high-powered Committee that will interphase with the NBTE and other Stakeholders to ensure that the withdrawn accreditation and normalcy is restored to our much-cherished Institution.
“As for the NBTE, we do not want to believe the widely held opinion that it’s unprecedented action against Abia Poly is not only politically induced but targeted against our common good. This is because several institutions of similar composition whose academic activities have been halted by terrorism and salary issues in other parts of the country still have their accreditation intact. Even the ongoing crisis between ASUU and the Federal Government as a result of failure to meet obligations to University Lecturers has not led to the withdrawal of any School’s accreditation.
“We, therefore, join all men and women of good conscience to condemn in the strongest terms this selective, knee jerk and suspicious behaviour of NBTE against our dear Abia State Polytechnic and warn that such hijack of Labour issues by a regulatory body as NBTE portends a dangerous precedent inimical to the development of our educational system.
“The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu Ph.D, continues to appeal to our dear students of Abiapoly and other well-meaning Abians to remain calm while directing Security Agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that political hawks and wayfarers do not exploit the situation for the disruption of peace and security of Citizens.“
President Muhammadu Buhari is currently hosting a delegation led by the All Progressives Congress’ stakeholders at the State House, Abuja.

However, the party’s standard bearer, Bola Tinubu, was not spotted at the time of this report.
The visit comes about two days after Shettima was unveiled as Tinubu’s substantive running mate.
The former Borno State Governor, who was at the Villa to see Buhari on Wednesday, told journalists that he “felt morally bound” to thank the president personally, before returning with a larger delegation on Friday.
Reacting to agitations over the Muslim-Muslim ticket floated by his party, he said the APC ticket was not designed to protect the interests of one faith as there were religious leaders to do that.
“In Borno, we spent over N1bn naira rebuilding churches destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgency. And this legacy has been continued by Governor Babagana Zulum. We have taken more Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem than some of the Northern states headed by Christians.
“So, we have that history of inclusivity, of togetherness. What we need is competent leadership. بوكر حقيقي على النت We are not coming into government to represent the Muslim or the Christian faith. The Sultan of Sokoto is eminently qualified to protect Muslim interests and the CAN president is eminently qualified to defend Christian interests as well,” he said.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State, on Friday, recognised Princess Ann Agom-Eze, as the Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for Ebonyi South Zone.
Governor Umahi through his Counsel, Roy Nweze Umahi, had dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission, to the Federal High Court in Abakaliki, to compel the commission to recognise the governor as the authentic senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South senatorial District.
But Princess Agom-Eze, on Tuesday, approached the court and urged it not to recognise Governor Umahi’s Senatorial bid.
Umahi’s Counsel argued that the governor’s name should be recognised by INEC, hence the 1st winner of the Ebonyi South Senatorial primary election which took place at Afikpo North Local Government Area, in the state.
Mr. Austin Umahi (the governor’s younger brother), a contender, had withdrawn at the 2nd primary election conducted on June 9, 2022, wherein the governor was reported to have won unopposed.
Delivering his judgement on Friday, Justice Fatun Riman, cited section 115 of the Electoral Act 2022, saying the governor was not an aspirant and cannot participate in the election or pre-election matters of the All Progressives Congress as regards the Ebonyi South zone, whose primary held on the 28th day of May, 2022.
According to the above section of the new Electoral Act, the governor neither procured forms for nor participated in the election and cannot claim any right based on the primary election.
This is coming on the heels of a revelation by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mike Igini, that politicians who procured multiple forms were criminals and risk two years imprisonment.
Reacting, the Counsel to Mrs Agom-Eze, Barr Nwonu Nnaemeka, said his team’s argument was its client, upon the withdrawal of Austin Umahi from the primary, she should claim all her rights as regards the exercise, being the second runner-up.
No fewer than fifty persons have allegedly been kidnapped by armed terrorists in Kuchi, Munya local government area, Niger State.
It was gathered that the terrorists in their large numbers invaded the town at about 2am on Friday and abducted a mass of people.
ABN TV learnt that terrorists stormed the town while it was raining and instantly launched a house-to-house operation and assembled their victims for onward movement to their enclave.
Our correspondent gathered that the terrorists alongside their captives are reportedly trapped on their journey at a nearby Dangunu River, which has overflown its banks due to the heavy downpour.
Confirming the incident, Sani Abubakar Yusuf Kokki, Co-convener, Concerned Shiroro Youths of Niger State said the gunmen invaded the community at about 2am while it was raining.
He said although there is no report of casualties, the estimated number of people kidnapped is put at about fifty (50).
“Reinforcement is immediately needed at the moment to fiercely engage them at their exit route where they are currently stranded. Mobilize able-bodied vigilantes to the scene for a gunfire encounter!
Kokki then called on the authorities concerned in the state should swing into action and do the needful.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Bagna Umar has confirmed the kidnap, saying security agencies have responded to the call from residents of the area.
Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PRO, Wasiu Abiodun who confirmed the kidnap said armed bandits and terrorists attacked Kuchi village via Sarkin-Pawa, Munya LGA and abducted nine persons.
He said the Police tactical teams and vigilante men have been drafted to the area and are currently trailing the hoodlums to the rescue the victims
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Senator Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to withdraw from the 2023 presidential election.
The party believes the APC presidential candidate has lost his fighting chance in the coming poll amid the controversy trailing the unveiling of his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima.
“The APC presidential candidate and his party should know that it is in his own interest to withdraw from the race as it will be futile to go into an election in which the will and aspiration of the people are manifestly against him and the APC,” the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said at a press conference on Friday in Abuja.
“Asiwaju has no political fighting chance in the face of the soaring popularity of PDP’s very competent, candid, transparent, people-oriented and much more prepared presidential candidate, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar at the poll.”
Tinubu’s choice of Shettima as his running mate in the election recently sparked outrage from various quarters, especially from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) which rejected a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Despite the stance of the religious body, some pictures and videos went viral in which some Christian clerics were said to have attended the unveiling of Shettima – signalling his acceptance as the APC vice-presidential candidate by the said clergymen.
Amid the mixed reactions trailing the development, some of the attendees reportedly said they were paid to attend the event, but the claim was vehemently rejected by Tinubu’s camp.
On its part, the PDP through its spokesman said the reactions that trailed the unveiling ceremony and the presence of the clerics suggested a massive rejection of the ruling party.
It insisted that was in the interest of the ruling party and its presidential candidate to withdraw from the 2023 elections to avoid what it described as a further disgrace.
According to the opposition party, Nigerians cannot afford to have ‘fraudsters, liars, deceivers, perjurers, swindlers, and corrupt individuals’ at the helm of affairs in the country.
Rather, it said it was poised for a winning campaign and open to suggestions and further collaborations with well-meaning Nigerians in a bid to liberate Nigeria in the 2023 general elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the nauseating, blasphemous and unpardonable act by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in hiring street artisans, fraudsters and touts and criminally dressing them in bishop’s vestments to orchestrate an endorsement for its collapsing Presidential campaign.
The PDP, in the strongest term, condemns this profane and highly provocative act of desperation by the sinking APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the face of APC’s collapsing leadership, membership, and followership structure across the country.
Nigerians were sickened by videos and pictorial evidence of known mechanics, bus conductors, and fraudsters sacrilegiously being dressed in fake bishop vestments and paid to endorse the unveiling of Asiwaju Tinubu’s widely rejected running mate, Sen. Kashim Shettima.
Such action is unacceptable and unbecoming of any individual aspiring to a leadership position at any level let alone, the office of the President. This is an embarrassment to leadership.
With this scandalous act, Asiwaju Tinubu, who is still battling with issues of alleged perjury, non-existent certificate and allegations of extortions has become more ethically challenged and lost all moral standing to seek election as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
More sickening is the outcry by the hirelings that they were defrauded by agents of the APC Presidential candidate, who paid them sums ranging from N30,000 to N40,000 as against the N100,000 they were earlier promised.
It is therefore ludicrous that instead of being remorseful and asking for forgiveness, the APC Presidential Campaign is shamelessly posting lame denials and excuses in the face of hard and verified evidence of its involvement in the shameless venture.
Our Party is not surprised by the attitude of the APC Presidential Campaign. Such is consistent with the character and DNA of the APC, which was never a political party but a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) hurriedly put together by conflicting bed-fellows and inchoate sailors clobbered together for remote personal gain and whose only interest is to defraud Nigerians through falsehood, lies, deceit, bribery, Temporary Loyalty Purchase, corruption of established institutions and violation of set rules without regards to the feelings, sensibilities, and wellbeing of Nigerians.
With this uglyepisode, Nigerians now know the individual who has been the planner and executor of the lies, false promises, and corruption of the APC that have brought disunity, excruciating hardship, mass killings, and political instability in the country in the last seven years.
Under the corrupt and deceptive government (which) Asiwaju confessed to have helped to install, our productive sector has been completely wrecked; the over $550 billion economy (largest in Africa and 26th globally) with a naira value of N167 to the Dollar handed over by the PDP has been brought to its knees with the naira now crawling at N665 to a dollar today.
Under Asiwaju’s APC government, Nigeria’s debt stock has astronomically risen from N12 trillion under the PDP to N41.6 trillion with our nation going broke as Debt Servicing cost has now surpassed Government revenue with over N300 billion.
Today, millions of businesses have been shut down due to harsh economic policies and the high cost of fuel, unemployment that has risen to over 35%, cost of food items, medication, and essential services, have skyrocketed beyond reach as over 90 million Nigerians are no longer able to afford their daily meals and other basic necessities of life. What a tragedy!
It is now crystal clear to Nigerians why the people of Asiwaju’s ancestral State of Osun and the South West geo-political zone which ought to be his natural stronghold outrightly rejected him and his APC in the July 16, 2022 Governorship election in Osun the State.
PDP’s sweeping victory and the spontaneous jubilation across our country are direct statements by Nigerians on their resolve to stand on the platform of the PDP to free themselves from the agonizing stranglehold of the lying, cruel, and life-discounting APC and its Presidential Candidate.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the electorate to vote the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections to ensure continuity in the polity, and stability in the country and West African region.
The President said this Friday while receiving a delegation from Nasarawa State led by Governor Abdullahi Sule at the State House, Abuja.
He said the off-season elections in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun States had confirmed his administration’s irreversible commitment to credible and violence-free polls in the country.
The President, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, told the high-powered delegation that the Electoral Act, signed by him earlier this year, was an attestation of the fulfilment of the administration’s determination and commitment to the tenets of the rule of law.
‘‘On the issues of credible, free and fair elections in the country, I have always re-assured my listeners both at home and abroad, my personal desire and indeed the priority of this administration is to bequeath to our nation an irreversible political process that continues to be both democratic and acceptable to the people.
‘‘My desire for our nation is that the 2023 elections should clearly mark the commencement of the institutional strength of our electoral body in conducting acceptable, credible and violence-free elections.
‘‘The forthcoming general elections will provide us with the opportunity to convince the electorate on the need for continuity to enable our party to consolidate on our achievements in the last 7 years. The Government and people of Nasarawa State, as usual, have a great role to play in returning our party to governance in the 2023 elections, in order to create a path for greater socio- economic growth and development. Buhari, who said Nasarawa remained very dear to his heart, described the State as the symbol of hope and determination in collective efforts to entrench democracy in Nigeria.
He recounted that during the 2011 general elections, the State stood out as the one that compensated the political efforts in the then Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), defying rigging and ensuring that their voices mattered.
‘‘To demonstrate this admiration and appreciation to the people of Nasarawa State, I personally attended the inauguration of Governor Tanko Al- Makura on May 29, 2011. In 2015 and 2019, the State remained one of the strongholds of our great party, the APC.
‘‘I am optimistic that the people of the State, the APC government and this broad representation of your delegation will not disappoint me, as we sustain concerted efforts in pushing forward the frontiers of good governance in our country.’’
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leadership of telling lies, distancing itself from reality, as well living in self-denial.
The accusation is contained in a statement issued on Friday, by the group’s director Prof. Ishaq Akintola.
MURIC is replying to CAN’s Wednesday outburst, describing several bishops and pastors who attended the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC Wednesday, at the Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre, Abuja as fake clerics.
Akintola’s statement reads: “Despite the brouhaha over the Muslim-Muslim ticket of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettimah, many bishops and pastors attended the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, 20th July 2022 at the Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre, Abuja.
“In its own reaction, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday described the bishops and pastors who attended the event as fake clerics. The Vice President of CAN in the 19 Northern States and Abuja who also doubles as chairman in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, said Tinubu was free to ‘hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them.’
Relying on fact checks published by a media house that confirmed the genuineness of the bishops and pastors, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused CAN leadership of distancing themselves from reality and living in self-denial.
“Going by the findings contained in this fact check, it is now very clear that leaders of CAN have distanced themselves from reality. They are living both in self-denial and self-delusion. They are pulling their followers by the nose. How low can a religious body descend? What does CAN stand to gain by deceiving its followers?
“Investigations have revealed the identities of many of the bishops whom Rev Hayab tagged ‘mechanics and artisans’. Three of these were :
1. Bishop Kamoru who is from Lagos, is a real cleric from Peace Chapel, Mararaba. A picture has emerged where he was seen conducting a wedding in the church and some of his members have come up to say that they knew him personally.
2. Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, of Gkoko Catholic Diocese, Benue State. was also among the clerics whom CAN called fake. Father Alia is also the APC Governorship candidate in Benue.
3. Pastor Prince Ugokwe, also confirmed that he is a real pastor and not fake.
“The identities of all the Christian clerics who attended the event have been revealed and none is fake. It is crystal clear from the above that CAN is not to be trusted. CAN disowns its own members who are not ordinary Christians but knowledgeable bishops and pastors. This shows that a caucus within the leadership of CAN has unleashed the tyranny of the oligarchy on Christendom in Nigeria.
“The fact that several bishops and pastors dared CAN by attending the unveiling of the APC running mate in spite of directives by the umbrella Christian body to the contrary is also symptomatic of the hypocrisy and ineffectiveness of CAN’s noise over the Muslim-Muslim ticket. It is a toothless bulldog. CAN is long in rhetorics, and short in facts. It also proves that serious-minded and knowledgeable Christians who can differentiate between right and wrong no longer follow CAN’s instructions.
“It is noteworthy that the same leader of CAN in the North, specifically Rev. Joseph John Hayab, was the one who tried to deceive Nigerians by claiming that the man who attempted to bomb the Living Faith Church on Sunday, 2nd February, 2020, was a Muslim whereas he was a Christian.
“Both the Nigerian Police, the accused himself, and his father later confirmed that the man’s name was Nathaniel Samuel, a confirmed church-goer. This incident is verifiable. MURIC does not fabricate stories.
“The attendance of the unveiling of Tinubu’s running mate two days ago and the attempt by CAN to paint the Christian clerics who attended the event as a fake is another attempt by Nigeria’s Christian leaders to divide the country, whip up anti-Muslim sentiments and promote anarchy. CAN has shot itself in the foot. It insists that no Christian should vote for Tinubu’s party but it forgot that at least a Christian cleric is the gubernatorial candidate in Benue State. CAN should permanently close this can of worms and never open it again.
“Whereas Paul says, ‘Do not lie to one another (Colossians 3:9-10) Christian leaders find it expedient to pour torrents of lies on their followers. CAN leaders wilfully ignore the warning in Proverbs, ‘…He who breathes out lies will perish (Proverbs 19:9). Christian leaders are adept at crying wolf where there is none. They raise false alarms to cause confusion.
“It is good that this attempt has been debunked and CAN leaders exposed as pathological liars. We call the attention of Western embassies in Nigeria, particularly American and British embassies to these monumental falsehoods. These are the same Christian leaders who are invited by the American Congress to spread toxic information about Nigerian Muslims.
“We Nigerian Muslims are willing to peacefully coexist with our Christian neighbours but we are wary of the strong propensity of Christian leaders to tell lies from the pit of hell without blinking an eyelid.
“There have been so many instances in the past and, without doubt, many more to come so long as the West continues to give them listening ears without cross-checking the details and without caring to hear from the other side. The world is in grave danger if the champions of democracy continue to promote lopsided hearing.”
An Iyaganku Family Court in Ibadan Friday ordered that a 23-year-old man, Sunday Adeyemi, be remanded for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old daughter of his neighbour.
The police charged Adeyemi who lives in the Amuloko area of Ibadan with conspiracy and defilement.
The Chief Magistrate, Patricia Adetuyibi, did not take Adeyemi’s plea for want in the jurisdiction. لعبت البوكر
Consequently, she ordered that Adeyemi should be remanded in Abolongo Correctional Centre in Oyo town pending legal advice from the Oyo State Ministry of Justice. قوانين لعبة بوكر
The magistrate adjourned the matter until August 11, for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Folake Ewe told the court that Adeyemi conspired with others, now at large, to commit the offence. لعبت البوكر
