The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concerns over alleged profiling and killing of northerners in many parts of southern Nigeria, especially the South East.

The director of publicity and advocacy of the NEF, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the position of the Forum known in a statement yesterday.

The NEF stated, “The recent murder of Nigeriens in Imo State, apparently on suspicion that they were northerners, is one incident among many recent ones that involve harassments, illegal arrests, attacks and killing of Nigerians from the North.

“It would appear that groups that target northerners draw inspiration from the silence of leaders and the absence of appropriate response from security and other law enforcement agencies.

“The Forum draws attention once again to the dangers of these escalating incidents and provocations. The impression that northerners are fair game for groups and organisations in the South is forcing northerners to exercise their rights to travel and live peacefully in any part of Nigeria, only under great danger and fear. This is intolerable and unacceptable,” he said.

The Forum demands that governments, communities and law enforcement agencies protect northerners living in the South.

Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has said the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, won the 2019 election through rigging.

Amosun spoke on Friday in Abeokuta while speaking after receiving an award from the Abeokuta Club to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the association.

The former governor had thrown his weight behind Adekunle Akinlade who contested on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement against Abiodun who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Akinlade was defeated by Abiodun with a margin of 19,517 votes.

Abiodun polled 241,670 votes to defeat Akinlade who had 222,153 votes. 1xbet arabic

Amosun stated that the 2019 governorship election in the state was rigged to favour the incumbent governor. اربح المال من الالعاب

He added that he had moved on because those who orchestrated the rigging had apologised to him.

Amosun said, “During the last election, thank God, Chief Osoba is here, I have said it, we won convincingly. They rigged, rigged, and ended up with 19,000.

“Some of them came to apologise to me. I can be mentioning names. We won that election. But I have moved on.

“We did our work. We will continue to do what we have to do. God will be with all of us.”

Speaking later in an interview with newsmen, Amosun declared that he was not in support of Abiodun’s administration, saying he must be removed.

He also assured his supporters that the nextline of action would soon be made public.

“Well, I am happy. When you are in a place and they are telling you that you have done the work of four or five governors altogether. قوانين لعبة القمار I feel elated. I am happy that they appreciated our little efforts.

“Just wait, very soon, you will hear where we are going next. Clearly, you know my stand, and my stand is my stand. I am not supporting this administration that is there now. He must be removed,” he said.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, on Friday said it was unrealistic for the Federal Government to borrow money to end the months-long strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

He made the comment while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Should we go and borrow to pay N1.2 trillion yearly?

“You cannot allow one sector of the economy to hold you by the jugular and then blackmail you to go and borrow N1.2 trillion for overheads when our total income would be about N6.1 trillion. And you have roads to build, health centres to build, other sectors to take care of.”

The Minister urged parents across the country to beg ASUU.

“Like the President said the other time, those who know them, appeal to their sense of patriotism,” he said.

“Let them go back to classes. They are not the only one in Nigeria. They are not the only ones feeding from the federal purse. The nation cannot grind to a halt because we want to take care of the demands of ASUU.”

ASUU’s Demands
ASUU embarked on a four-week warning strike on February 14.

On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government meet all of its demands. A 12-week extension was announced on May 9.

Since May 9, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.

One bone of contention for the academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.

But the Federal Government has said it doesn’t have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The agreement was reportedly struck in 2009.

Another is the issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The academics have proposed an alternative payroll system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo has said that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu is the best candidate to become president of Nigeria based on his antecedents.

Keyamo disclosed this while speaking as the Media Director, Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council during the Channels Politics Today monitored by ABN TV on Friday evening.

“Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one of the easiest candidates to sell. Nobody comes close to Tinubu’s record when it comes to public service in the last 23 years,” Keyamo said.

While defending the records of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which has failed in security and economy, the minister said there are records created that Tinubu, if elected, will continue.

“There are records that this government has created that we are very proud of. I will not run away from them. This Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has uncanny ability to improve whatever he meets in the office,” he added.

Atiku, Tinubu, Obi Others Invited On Peace Agreement

The Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) has accused leading 2023 presidential candidates of divisive utterances.

The group mentioned Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, flagbearers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The POSN noted that the duo have been making pronouncements “polarizing the country along ethnic and religious fault lines”.

The spokesman Sani Altukry wondered how they would unite Nigerians if they eventually win the election “after dividing them”.

His statement on Friday said the APC and PDP should be telling citizens their plans to rescue the country “from the path of precipice that it is heading”.

POSN asked Nigerians to compare the comments by “people driven by selfish ambition and those driven by a desire for nation building, while making their choice”.

The group said Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) was using his campaign to unite Nigerians and make them see “their only country must be repaired and made habitable”.

“But Tinubu and Atiku camps are using divide and rule approach as their campaign strategy”, Altruky asserted.

“Because of Atiku and Tinubu’s blunders, Nigeria has divided far much more on religious and tribal lines than ever before, the same mistake made by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The POSN recalled Tinubu’s comment before the Osun governorship election: “Labour Party members and supporters can never rule us, they will Labour till death”.

The statement also quoted Atiku as saying, “Obi is not known in the North; will remain unknown by the over 90 percent of Northerners who do not make use of the internet”.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, on behalf of the Force Management team, and Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, on Friday, mourned his predecessor and the 11th Indigenous Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Mustafa Adebayo Balogun, who passed on on Thursday at a private Hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to the statement, “IGP Mustapha Adebayo Balogun, NPM, fwc, who hails from Ila-Orangun in Osun State, was Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force between March 2002 to January 2005 and achieved major operational milestones including facilitating the establishment of the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

”A graduate of the University of Lagos and the University of Ibadan where he studied Political Science and Law respectively,

“The former IGP served in various administrative, operational, and investigative positions all around the country.

Late IGP Tafa, as he was fondly called, was a fellow of the National War College, as it was then called but now National Defence College, Abuja.

He equally held many Master’s Degrees, cutting across many academic and professional fields.

The late IGP will be laid to rest in his country home at Ila-Orangun, Osun State on Saturday 6th August 2022, according to Islamic rites.

The Inspector-General of Police condoled with the immediate family, relatives, fellow coursemates, and friends of the late IGP and prayed for the repose of his soul.

Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido II, former Emir of Kano, has expressed great concerns about the current state of the country.

He said Nigeria is now in a worse situation compared to what obtained in 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari took over from former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sanusi spoke on Thursday in Lagos at the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF), leadership colloquium and awards.

“This is the only oil-producing country that is grieving at the moment when oil prices have gone up as a result of the Russia/Ukraine war. Our total revenue is not able to service our debt. And if anybody does not understand that we are in a complete mess, we are.

“We were in a deep hole in 2015. And between 2015 and now, we have been digging ourselves into a deeper hole.

“We thought we had a big problem in 2015. 2015 is nothing compared to what will happen in 2023. We have terrorism, we have banditry, we have inflation, we have an unstable exchange rate, and the worst thing is that those in leadership actually think we are going to thank them when they leave office, that we are going to appreciate them. There is no change.

“There is no sense of urgency. If you are running a company and your sales revenue cannot pay interest, you know you’re bankrupt.

“When the total revenue of the Federal Government cannot service debt we are smiling. These are the kinds of questions we need to ask. And the reality is that there are so many Nigerians, who, given the opportunity will do well but they simply cannot contest in that space,” he said.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, hinged the challenge on the lack of vision of some of the country’s leaders.

He added, “What is our vision for Nigeria? Do we have a vision of one country? Do we have a vision of one united country, that lives peacefully with itself — diverse, multicultural, multi-religious but one?

“Leaders after leaders, most of those who have ruled did not have a vision for a united Nigeria. How would you like to be remembered after eight years as a President, after eight years as a governor, eight years as a minister, eight years as Governor of CBN? How will you like history to remember you? They have not thought about it.

“The vast majority of those in office have a vision that is limited to the next election. It is to win. And when you’ve won, you’ve reached a destination, not a journey.”
