Pensioners in Ekiti State will want outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi to do one thing before he hands it over to the incoming administration in the next two months.

They will want him to clear the over N40 billion pending gratuities and other benefits.

While the state retirees were last paid gratuities in July 2013, their local government counterparts were last paid in September 2012.

Cumulatively, the retirees at present, are owed not less than  N37billion gratuity arrears apart from monthly pensions.

The pensioners pleaded with the Governor to use the few months left for him to leave the office to clear a reasonable amount from the outstanding debt to ameliorate their suffering.

Though they appreciated the government of Dr. Fayemi for increasing the amount budgeted for the payment of their benefits from N100 million to N400 million, they insisted that more needed to be done as promised during the electioneering campaign.

At a  prayer session to seek the face of God over their plight, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP,  Joel Akinola, lamented the death of 200 members within a year due to the inability to meet their basic needs. العاب بلاك جاك

According to him: “We are crying and justifiably so in view of our agonies, our sufferings and an unprecedented assault on the psyches of our members in Ekiti State. Our pride as senior citizens who have faithfully, laboriously and dutifully served this nation is being rubbished daily. Pensioners are being portrayed as failures in their communities, and worst of all, they are being pushed to their graves in large numbers.

Part of the first stanza of our national anthem says: “The labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain.” Pensioners’ labour is now being made to be in vain by the failure of the government and the citizenry to comprehend the seriousness of their plight.

“The following statistics is a summary of the state’s indebtedness as of December 2021: Pension Arrears; three months for state and seven months for local government. Gratuities: State pensioners were last paid in July 2013 with liabilities of about N18 billion, while local government pensioners have a liability of N19.8 billion and were last paid in September 2012. One has to imagine what the indebtedness will be now in July 2022.”

Speaking, Chief Press Secretary to the governor,  Mr. Yinka Oyebode, said the government places a premium on the welfare of not only workers but also pensioners.

He said since its inception, the government had not owed a single month of pension while the payment of gratuity was increased from N100 million to N400 million. According to Oyebode, the government would have loved to clear all the backlog of the gratuities owed by the previous government due to economic realities. That must also be considered.

Jatau Lydia Lami, a 35-year-old female passenger who was detained by agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for drug trafficking, stated she intended to raise N5 million in ransom money to pay bandits who claimed responsibility for her actions.

On Sunday, July 31, 2022, the mother of three was apprehended at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for attempting to export 1,700 Tramadol 225mg tablets that were hidden in her luggage to Istanbul, Turkey via a Turkish Airline flight.

ECOWAS Speaker Suspends Staff Recruitment, Sets Up Investigative Panel

Dr. Sidie Tunis, Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has directed the immediate suspension of staff recruitment.

He has subsequently set up a panel to investigate alleged malpractices in the recruitment process.

Tunis gave the directive in a statement issued by the parliament’s Communications Division.

The suspension follows allegations by the Nigerian delegation at the parliament that the country’s candidates were being marginalized in the recruitment exercise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian representation in the bloc had threatened to withdraw its membership as its citizens were being marginalized at the parliament in respect of employment and promotions.

The speaker had received written complaints from the 1st Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase and the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the ECOWAS Commission, Amb. Musa Sani Nuhu.

According to the statement, the work of the eight-man independent Ad Hoc Investigation Committee is expected to start on Aug.  2022 and its findings are expected to be made available to the speaker within a week.

A bureau meeting will be convened immediately to consider the report for onward submission to the plenary.

“The action of the Honorable Speaker is in conformity with Rule Thirty-three (33) and Thirty-four (34) of the Rules of Procedures of the Parliament which provides that a Special Committee may be set up to address specific matters.

“The Ad hoc Committee would be headed by Sen. Mohammed Ali Ndume, Chairman of the Committee on Administration, Finance, and Budget.

“Other Members of the Committee include: Hon. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu from Nigeria and  Hon. Fatoumatta Njai from the Gambia.

“Hon. Amadou Djibo Ali from Niger, Hon. Kounon Nahou Agbandao from Togo, Hon. Caramo Camara from Guinea Bissau, Hon. Moussokora Chantal Fanny from Cote d’ Ivoire and Mr. Arboncana Oumarou Dicko  to serve as Clerk to the Committee.

“The Terms of Reference of the Ad Hoc Committee shall be as follows:  Investigate allegations of inappropriate conduct in the ongoing recruitment process at the ECOWAS Parliament; Investigate allegations of marginalization of Nigerian Candidates in the current recruitment process;

“Investigate and determine if indeed the plenary adopted any Resolution concerning the subject matter (Recruitment of Staff), using normal parliamentary procedure;

“In the execution of its mandate, the committee shall be granted access to all documents relating to the recruitment exercise and work with the Advisory Committee on Recruitment and Promotions at the ECOWAS Parliament, to under-study and review the exercise.

“The Ad hoc Committee would be guided by the provisions of the Supplementary Act and the ECOWAS Staff Regulations.

The leadership of the parliament has said it is devoted to upholding and protecting the rights of all citizens of the community to aspire to positions in any ECOWAS institution, in line with the provisions of the group’s staff regulations and all related protocols.

The world is brimming with ambitious political leaders, but sadly very few matchups to the traits of good leadership. In fact, many political leaders appear to be severely lacking in some of the most essential qualities of a good leader, such as integrity and accountability. It’s no coincidence that the word “politician” has many negative connotations. But experience tells us that there is only a handful that comes near to the principles of leadership and shows strong indicators of a successful political leader.

Political leaders are vital, they determine the allocation of power and financial balances through governmental policies, establish partnerships with other stakeholders, and make decisions that can have a major effect on a nation’s well-being and its citizens.
Political leadership requires a leader to focus on a country’s long-term betterment, above and beyond any short-term personal gains. Strong political leadership requires a mixture of charm and honesty, and the capacity to evaluate a circumstance and make a judgment based on what will be better for the majority.

Above all, leadership in a democratic system needs statesmanship as compared to just becoming a ‘politician’ which implies possessing the honesty and ability to stand up for what is fair.

What makes a good political leader? A person with good political leadership skills will prove to be a successful leader who can easily distinguish between success and failure. A successful leader has a visionary dream and understands how to turn his visions into success stories in the modern world.

Let’s look at some of the skills required to be successful in political leadership.

HONESTY AND INTEGRITY: Honesty and Integrity are two main elements that make for a strong leader. Leaders excel because they hold to their basic principles and convictions, and that won’t be possible without ethics.

MAKING DECISIONS: A Leader should be capable of making the right decision at the right time. Leaders take actions that have a huge effect on people. A leader should think long and hard before taking a decision but stand by it once the decision is made.

INSPIRING OTHERS: Perhaps the toughest thing a leader to do is convince people to follow them. This will only be done by providing a clear example and encouraging your followers. We look up to them when the going gets tough and see how they. As a leader, you should think optimistically, and your positive attitude should be evident from your actions. A leader should keep cool under strain and retain a degree of encouragement. If you excel in inspiring your people, you will comfortably resolve every obstacle now and in the future.

DELEGATING TASKS EFFECTIVELY: Focusing on core duties is vital for effective leadership while leaving the rest to others. By this, I mean empowering and delegating tasks to your followers. When you try to micromanage your employees, lack of trust can grow, and, most significantly, you won’t be willing to work on critical things as you should. Different duties should be delegated among the subordinates and see how they perform. Provide them with all the tools and help they need to attain the target and allow them to bear responsibilities.

Man with a vision and purpose: Influential leaders have intent and vision. Not only can they imagine the future, but they also express their dreams with their supporters. If their fans could see the larger picture, they could understand where they are headed. A strong leader discusses why they are going towards the path that they are heading and reveals the approach and course of action to accomplish the purpose. ( Source – B.PAC )

For a man who has rewritten the approach to politics coupled with his wealth of experience over the years, it is will be advantageous if we entrust more task to his hands.

Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mustapha Habib Ahmed said the Agency is in a better position now to provide a well-coordinated and timely response to complex emergencies in the country.

He stated this at the weekend in Abuja at the close of an Incident Command System and Emergency Coordination Centre (ICS/ECC) training facilitated by the United States of America Forest Service (USFS) with support from USAID for staff of NEMA and State Emergency Management Agencies.

He said “the series of training programs by the United States of America Forest Service as coordinated by USAID have no doubt advanced NEMA expectations of deploying Incident Command System for effective disaster response in Nigeria.

“I make bold to say that, we are now in a better position to provide a well-coordinated and timely response to complex emergencies to save lives and enable speedy recovery.

The Director General NEMA further said that “the ICS will equally enable us to deploy and utilize our human and material assets in a more efficient manner during sudden onset emergencies.”

While appreciating the facilitators of the training, he said the long-term Nigeria-USA partnership has continued to yield positive impacts as he commended the staff of the US Embassy for driving the partnership.

He congratulated the participants for the successful completion of the training and urged them to utilize the knowledge gained in the improvement of disaster management and benefit all.

In his remark, the lead facilitator, Mr. Scott Dehnisch of the USFS said the training modules were developed to meet specific expectations to further improve capacities for efficient coordination and utilization of resources in disaster management. He also expressed confidence in the sustenance of the renewed partnership between NEMA and USFS.

Director Human Resource Management NEMA Malam Musa Zakari, who also participated in the training explained that it was very intensive, covering critical aspects of command and resource utilization in the management of complex incidences and situations.

Some of the other participants that also spoke were the Director General Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency Idris Garba Abbas and Executive Secretary Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency Muhammad Muazu Mukaddas. They both appreciated NEMA for facilitating the participation of SEMAs in the training and commended the resource persons and the USA for their support towards the improvement of disaster management in the country.

Nigerian Catholic priest serving in Malawi, Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu has said some Nigerians opposing the presidential ambition of Peter Obi never had sense.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Fr Kelvin stated that the current movement for the Labour Party presidential candidate is not ordinary.

Citing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the LP and his wide acceptance across the country, the popular clergy described Obi’s ambition and move as a divine arrangement.

He called on the attackers of the former Anambra State governor to reverse, stating that they “can’t fight him and you can’t stop him. Just remove hands for im matter”.

According to the priest, every single person that had tried to pull the LP candidate down so far had “ended up killing and making a mess of their reputations”.

He wrote, “Whatever is following Mr. Peter Obi is not ordinary. If you sincerely reflect over every step he had taken so far, from leaving PDP to finding his running mate, the timing of his moves, accuracy of plans and thoughts. They are nothing but divine arrangements.

“Some of those fighting him actually never had sense before, but we never knew, we were even ‘gbaming’ them then. . .but with Peter Obi, every doubt about them has been totally removed”.

Bakers Set To Raise Prices Of Bread Again, Say Cost Of Production Increasing

Bakers, under the aegis of the Premium BreadMakers Association of Nigeria, have warned of yet another hike in prices of bread due to the skyrocketing cost of baking materials.

President of the association, Emmanuel Onuorah, disclosed this to The PUNCH in an exclusive interview, stating that the recent developments in the global marketplace had not translated into a better operating environment for local bakers.

The planned hike follows a recent strike action by PBAN, as well as the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, which culminated in a 15 per cent hike in bread prices barely two weeks ago.

According to Onuorah, many PBAN members had been forced to shut down business operations this year due to the skyrocketing cost of doing business.

He said, “The price of bread is going up again. The millers just increased prices by N2000. Sugar refiners increased by N2000. We had a N10,000 increase between last week and this week. We are increasing prices again. Preservatives increased by N2000, and butter increased by N2000. So, we have to respond. For us as an industry, our own is garbage in, garbage out. If the price of wheat comes down today, and the price of fuel comes down, certainly we will look at the price of our products and act accordingly.”

Onuorah also urged the Federal Government to open up a forex window for industry players, particularly the flour millers. This, he said, would significantly address the indiscriminate increase in the prices of flour in the market.

“When we went on withdrawal of services, flour was N28,500. Today it is N30,500,” Onuorah said.

On July 22, 2022, Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement to free more than 20 million tonnes of grain stuck in Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. The agreement, brokered with support from the United Nations and Turkey, was projected to have major implications on global food security and food prices. The inability of Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports had severely reduced the supply of food to import-dependent African and Middle Eastern countries.

Before the war in Ukraine, Ukraine had been a bread basket—providing wheat, maize, and barley to countries throughout Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

According to a recent publication by the World Bank, export prices of cereal indices were stable over the past 2 weeks, with the agricultural index closing at the same level as two weeks ago. The export index went up by two per cent, but the cereal index went down by one per cent.

The war in Ukraine is having extreme impacts on the world’s poorest countries. The countries at highest risk of a debt crisis are experiencing the additional threat of a food crisis. A recent World Bank blog described the dire situation that many poor countries had been facing since the start of the war, with surging food import bills resulting from high grain prices caused by the war. According to World Bank data, import bills for wheat, rice, and maize are expected to rise by more than one per cent for low-income countries at high risk of a debt crisis— more than double the increase from 2021 to 2022.

In an exclusive chat with our correspondent, the Deputy President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Gabriel Idahosa, projected some confidence that the price of flour would significantly reduce, given the recent global developments. He, however, warned that other elements in the production chain could ultimately skew the gains that could arise from this fall in flour prices.

He said, “Grain prices worldwide have started coming down since the first shipment arrived. Wheat prices have come down quite rapidly since the agreement was signed. But that is just the grain. All other products will not come down because the situation in the market has not changed, but grain and grain-derived products like bread should fall. Bakers should expect cheaper flour.”

A baker, Olushola, who also spoke with our correspondent, lamented the rapid increase in the price of flour. According to her, bakers now had to review prices on a weekly basis in order to recoup costs and maintain profit margins.

She said, “A bag of flour is now N31,000. That was on Friday. Who knows if it has increased again? We have to review prices regularly. People don’t want to understand, but we are all in this country and we know what is going on in the economy.”

Speaking when he paid a condolence visit to the Country Home of the deceased at Amuzukwu-Ibeku , Governor Ikpeazu said that the institutional memory of late Sir Micah Onyebuchi in the education sector is second to none as he was ever willing to help whenever called upon, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onyebuchi Ememanka said in a statement.

He said, “The Governor described late Sir Micah Onyebuchi as a seasoned educationist who brought his wealth of experience to bear as the then Executive Chairman of Abia state Universal Education Board (ASUBEB) and urged the bereaved family to uphold all that the deceased lived for as a way of preserving his legacies.

“While praying God to give the matriach of the Onyebuchi family and other family members the fortitude to bear the loss, Governor Ikpeazu assured that the State Government will support the family towards giving the deceased a befitting burial.

“The Governor had earlier signed the Condolence Register.

“Receiving the Governor and his entourage a member of the family, Chief Ejikeme Onuoha thanked the Governor for coming to condole the family and prayed God to sustain the Governor to enable him complete his developmental projects in good faith.

Burkina Faso Seeks Assistance From Nigeria To End Terrorism

The government of Burkina Faso has sought Nigeria’s advice how to fight terrorism.

Burkinabe Chief of Defence Staff, Senior Col. David Kadre, sought the advice in Abuja weekend when he visited his Nigerian counterpart, Gen. لعبة بينغو Lucky Irabor.

He noted that he was also in Nigeria to attend the just concluded graduation ceremony of the Course 30 participants of the National Defence College as well as presenting the security situation in the West African sub-region.

“I came also regarding terrorism and insurgency in our countries so as to seek your advice and experience since Nigeria is engaged in fighting this scourge,” he said.

Kadre reiterated the need for deeper collaboration between Nigerian and Burkinabe armed forces to address the challenges of terrorism and insurgency.

Irabor called for stronger collaboration among West African armed forces to deal with insecurity in the sub-region.

He congratulated Kadre, an alumnus of the National Defence College (NDC), Nigeria, for his appointment.

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Director General of the All Progressives Congress, APC 2023 Governorship Campaign Organisation, Elder Godsday Orubebe, weekend, said the party and its gubernatorial candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege are on a mission to rescue Delta.

Orubebe who stated this at the meeting of Delta North APC where the deputy governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 general election, Mr Friday Osanebi was unveiled, said some aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the State were working for the success of the APC governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

Saying he has been talking with aggrieved PDP members who have indicated interest to work for APC, he urged APC members in the State to close ranks by forgetting the past and work with the unity of purpose to ensure victory for the Omo-Agege/Osanebi ticket in 2023.

While urging aggrieved members of the party to bury the hatchet and move forward, Orubebe said he took it upon himself to meet personally with aggrieved leaders of APC immediately he joined the party.

Unveiling the deputy governorship candidate, former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Victor Ochei, said “Osanebi is a political asset who has become a huge plus for the party”.

Describing Rt Hon Friday Osanebi as “young, tenacious and trusted to deliver on an action”, Ochei said the ruling PDP in the state was regretting for allowing the former deputy speaker exit the party.

Rt Hon Friday Osanebi in his remarks, told party faithful to work for the victory of APC, saying that his coming was to add value to the APC and the governorship ticket.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of the party in Delta North, Chief Adizue said all aggrieved leaders have been fully reconciled within the senatorial district.

Eluaka expressed optimism that the 2023 election offered the best opportunity to dislodge PDP from Delta, urging members of the party to continue to build on the new found peace.
