EFCC Nabs Seven Suspected Internet Fraudsters In Abuja, Including Female

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, have arrested a syndicate of 7 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja, including a female.

The suspects, Nnonyelu Favour Chioma, Ajator Henry Sopulu, Ego Andy Seji, Okeke Ikechukwu Jude, Oshioriamite Perfect, Ego Akin and Okeke were arrested on Friday in a sting operation at Tunlapal Estate, Kurudu, Abuja.

A statement by EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said that items recovered from the suspects included mobile phones and computer devices.

Uwujaren said that the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as the investigation is concluded..

We Will Not Allow You To Destroy Public Universities – ASUU Tells Federal Govt, Governors

There seems to be a ray of hope in the ongoing strike as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is scheduled to meet with Federal Government representatives on Tuesday.

President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who disclosed this on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today monitored by ABN TV, said the meeting was to discuss one of seven issues ASUU is protesting over.

“That’s the issue of renegotiation,” Osodeke said.

“The renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

“It’s not just about wages. It has to do with the system, funding, structure, autonomy, and other issues and how to fund universities.

“The government has reduced it to just salaries alone. But if they had looked at the whole agreement and implemented it, we would not be talking about funding.”

Osodeke also suggested that if Tuesday’s meeting goes well, the strike action may be called off.

“We are willing to sign,” he added.

Recall that ASUU, on February 14, shut down public universities over the inability of the Federal Government to implement previous agreements both parties entered into.

The lecturers’ agitations include funding for the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution, promotion arrears, and others.

Peter Obi Meets Wike Again, Ortom, Mimiko, Ikpeazu, Other PDP Governors

 

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, met with the Governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike and other governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State.

The meeting is the second time Obi would meet with Wike after dumping the PDP and declaring his presidential ambition.

Obi’s meeting was disclosed via Twitter by former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko.

Mimiko disclosed that the meeting was held yesterday night.

Others in attendance include, former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; former Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwanbo; Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu; Mohammed Adoke and several others.

Sharing a photograph of the meeting, Mimiko wrote: “Nice to share some time last night with @GovWike @Donald_Duke @PeterObi @HEDankwambo @GovSamuelOrtom @GovernorIkpeazu, Mohammed Adoke SAN and many other friends.”

As of the time of filing this report, the aim and location of the meeting is unknown.

2023 Election: Atiku Abubakar Predicts APC’s Downfall

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 elections Atiku Abubakar says he has no other agenda but to serve Nigerians.

He spoke in Yola, Adamawa State, yesterday at an event where thousands of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku, who was received by a mammoth crowd at the Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola, said he would address the challenges facing Nigeria if elected.

It was the first time he was returning to his hometown after emerging as the candidate of the PDP for the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku urged the electorate in Adamawa State to consolidate on the support given to him throughout his 30-year political career.

He also called on party members to united and work together.

Meanwhile, National Chairman, PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has said he will not step down despite pressure on him to do so.

Ayu is said to be under pressure to step down as part of the condition to settle the rift between the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Atiku and Wike have been at loggerheads since the completion of the presidential primary of the party and the nomination of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the vice presidential candidate.

But Ayu said he had not resigned and has no plan to do so, noting that he was ready to lead the party to victory in 2023.

“We restate, therefore, that the PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has not resigned and has no plan of resigning. For clarity and emphasis, he was elected for a tenure of four years,” Ayu’s media aide, Simon Imobo-Tswam, said in a statement yesterday.

The spokesman of the PDP, Hon Debo Ologunagba, denied knowledge of any condition from Wike’s camp asking the national chairman to step down.

Stop Rejecting Corps Members, NSIWC Chairman Ekpo Tells Employers

The Chairman of the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission, NSIWC, Ekpo Nta, has decried the rate of rejection of corps members by some employers in the country.

According to him, every corps member must be given enabling environments in their place of primary assignments to contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of the country.

Nta, according to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations in National Youth Service Corps, Eddy Megwa, stated this when its Director General, Brigadier General Muhammad Fadah, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

He added that the greatest disservice to any corps member was rejection.

The NSIWC chairman, however, appealed to state governments to provide conducive orientation camps with modern facilities to train corps members who are deployed to their states in vocational skills that would make them employers of labour.

“Going towards 2023 budget, all MDAs should be required to state in their budget, what they are going to provide for NYSC so that it is statutory and the country can plan with that”, Nta advised.

He also condemned the under-utilization of corps members, adding that all employers of labour should adhere strictly to the posting policy of NYSC, which covers education, health, and infrastructure among others.

The NSIWC chairman also described NYSC as one of the institutions that have continuously helped in uniting the nation through the deployment of corps members to the nooks and crannies of the country.

Fadah thanked Nta and his team for assisting the NYSC, especially in terms of the upward review of corps members’ monthly allowances.

He added that there was the need for every stakeholder to nurture the youths very well and prepare them for higher responsibilities as good leaders.

Fadah also promised a stronger collaboration between NYSC and the commission.

“The NYSC is a bridge between the youths and the larger society. We thank you most sincerely for what you have done,” General Fadah said.

The DG added that the NYSC Trust Fund Bill has passed through the National Assembly but awaiting Presidential assent.

He said when approved, the fund would make business grants available to deserving corps members to start their vocational businesses in-like with the skills they acquired during service.

Presbyterian Church Elects Ekpenyong Akpanika As New Prelate

The Abia State Coordinator of a leading inter-denominational group, Nigeria Prays, Apostle Chuks Alozie has facilitated with the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria and the Methodist Church Of Nigeria on the emergence of her New Prelates.

The new Prelate of the Presbyterian church Of Nigeria, Most Rev Dr. Ekpenyong Akpanika was elected in Calabar Cross River state on Monday at the 25th General Assembly. He succeeds the outgoing Prelate, His Eminence, Nzie Nsi Eke.

The new Prelate of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Most Rev Oliver Ali Abba was also elected. He is to take over from His Eminence Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche.

Apostle Chuks Alozie who is also the National Coordinator of Abia Apostolic Intercessory Team in his felicitation message commended the strong leadership and spiritual values and culture of Kingdom mindset which he said the outgoing leaders of the churches promoted.

Apostle Chuks Alozie extolled the electoral process that brought the new dynamic Prelates, Most Rev Dr Ekpenyong Akpanika of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria and Most Rev Oliver Ali Abba of Methodist Church Nigeria as transparent which has made the Leadership institution of the Church more viable, strong and healthy for continuity.

He described the new Prelates as worthy Christian Leaders that will bring their wealth of knowledge, experience, and Spiritual endowment to bear in their Leadership Positions. He prayed God to use them to achieve greater heights and expansion to the frontiers of the Gospel.

He called on the new elected Prelates to know that much is expected from them by their immediate Churches and the entire body of Christ considering the critical time in the history of the Church when they emerged.

He said the Church has lost grounds in Evangelism and discipleship and appealed to the New Prelates to rekindle these core values and ethos of the Church which is lacking on various pulpits, as the harvest is plenty and labourers are few. He stated that the wave of materialism and prosperity gospel had been propagated strongly and de-emphasis on Evangelism and Discipleship should be addressed by the New Prelates.

He admonished politicians jostling for the 2023 General Elections should emulate the organization rancor-free and smooth Elections which the Methodist Church Nigeria and Presbyterian Church of Nigeria conducted and learn from their success stories.

He further called on INEC to continuously assure the Nigerian populace and the international community of a free, fair, and credible Elections, and to let the votes of the electorate count during the 2023 General Elections.

Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji MNSE and his colleagues at the 7th Abia State House of Assembly have no doubt performed so excellently well that they receive accolades not only from right thinking Abians and neutrals but also from both the Presidency and the National Assembly for their dexterity in the prompt and exceptional discharge of their duties.

While Nigerians have persistently clamoured for ‘Restructuring’ as a panacea to the myriad of challenges besetting the nation, the National Assembly finally heeded the call to amend several areas of the Constitution that will enhance the sociopolitical and economic fortunes of the country by embarking on the amendment exercise after which it sent the work to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for their consideration and concurrence.

Knowing how important this is to Nigerians and the huge benefits that will accrue to Abians in particular and Nigerians in general from it, the Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji-led House of Assembly promptly worked assiduously on the Bill sent by the National Assembly in March this year, over an extended period of time, and passed same by giving its concurrence on June thus becoming the first House of Assembly to have completed work on the 44 items in the 5th Alteration of the Constitution. Seven other States have also eventually concluded theirs. They are Kogi, Ogun, Edo, Katsina, Lagos, Imo and Ondo. The National Assembly has lamented that Unless something drastic happens, they are set to miss the October deadline since two-third of the State Houses of Assembly is required to give their concurrence before they can conclude and pass the Amendments to the President for his assent. To celebrate Abia State House of Assembly’s feat, the National Assembly did a full page paid publication in Nigerian newspapers showering encomiums on the Abia Lawmakers.

The story was not different when the Abia State House of Assembly became the first and, till date, the only State House of Assembly that has domesticated the Diaspora Law by passing the Abia State Diaspora Commission Law, a feat that drew the applause of the Presidency at the time. Apart from its benefits to Abians in the diaspora, the Commission is already creating jobs for Abians.

For example, in the heat of the then seemingly intractable border crisis between the people of Arochukwu LGA and their neighbours from Biase and Odukpani LGAs in Cross River State which always left several dead, the Abia State House of Assembly on the 16th of March, 2020, dispatched a high powered delegation led by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Uchendu to meet with relevant government functionaries including members of the Cross River State House of Assembly with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

The journey saw the delegation also meeting with the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ijemot Evara Esu who also doubled as the chairman of the State’s Peace and Conflict Resolution body.

A strongly worded communique appealing to the warring communities was issued at the end of the meeting with other practical steps taken to ensure the restoration of peace to the areas, and it has remained so till date, thereby saving lives that would have ordinarily been lost if the Assembly had not intervened.

One doesn’t need to look too hard to see the importance of these Laws passed by the Abia State House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji as they concern security, job creation, promotion of democratic principles and ideals, protection of the fundamental human rights of citizens, youth empowerment among other dividends of democracy to the people.

There are also several Motions and oversight functions of the Assembly on the Executive that have also yielded positive results for the people.

Even at this stage, with the scanty information provided so far on the activities of the 7th Abia State House of Assembly, we make bold to state that the Abia State House of Assembly will rank among the best three if not even the best among Houses of Assembly in the entire federation.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the President-elect of Kenya, William Ruto, on his victory in the East African nation’s General Elections.

In a statement signed by spokesperson Femi Adesina, the President commended the people of Kenya for the peaceful and transparent outcome of the elections, which once again demonstrates that the democratic process, values and principles remain the best way for the people to select their leaders and hold them accountable.

“President Buhari says Nigeria values Kenya as a strategic partner in the fight against terrorism and violence extremism, buoyed by a long history of friendship, economic and trade ties, and effective collaboration through international organisations such as the African Union, the United Nations and the Commonwealth,” the statement addded.

“While wishing Deputy President Ruto a successful inauguration and tenure in office, the President looks forward to more fruitful and robust engagements between the two countries on shared priorities such as enhancing peace and security on the continent, democracy, and greater economic prosperity and social development.

“The Nigerian leader also salutes President Uhuru Kenyatta for his statesmanship and exemplary leadership to the people of Kenya in the past nine years and the profound legacies of his administration on infrastructure, education, healthcare reforms and tourism as well as strong influence and support on regional security.”

 

2023: No Going Back On Southern Presidency — Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, yesterday, urged Nigerians not to allow religion to divide the country, insisting that the time has come for power to shift to the South in the interest of justice, equity and fairness.

The governor spoke at the 34th Annual Convention of Agape Christian Ministries International held in Akure.

Speaking on the theme ‘This is my Time’, Akeredolu said Nigerians have always lived together in harmony despite their religious differences.

His words: “The theme of the convention is ‘This is my Time’, that is, ‘Emi Lokan’. So, if you are now saying this is your time, what is the meaning in Yoruba? It is Emi Lokan.

“The choice of the theme, I’m sure it is something that the Lord Almighty put your mind to do so that it will resonate to “this is my time, Emi loan.’

“We have an interesting coincidence here. We have the wife of the former Governor of Kwara State here. I have known her to be a true Christian, a very true one, leading the altar in her home, in a home where the husband is also a true Muslim. And they are all living together peacefully. That is one example.

“There are so many examples. But I will give one more. There is one of our leaders who is a Muslim and married to a senior Pastor in the Redeemed. We all know Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. They all live together. I know in my family that there are Muslims there, and we are not quarrelling.

“There are many people here that have both Muslims and Christians as family members and there is no quarrel. Religion should not bring quarrels among us and that is where we stand.

“What we believe and stand for is that since we started this Republic in 1999, we have been rotating power from North to South, and for us, by that rotation, this is the time of South.

“This is our time and nobody is going to take it. ‘Awa lokan’. Wonderful theme for this time.

Hold PDP Responsible For ASUU Strike — Keyamo

The spokesperson for the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Festus Keyamo, has said ASUU is on strike because of the 2009 agreement signed by the Peoples Democratic Party-led government.

Keyamo disclosed this during an interview on Trust TV’s Daily Politics on Monday.

He added that between 1999 and 2015 when the PDP handed over to the ruling APC, ASUU was on strike 12 times, amounting to 900 days.

“The ASUU thing you are talking about. What is the problem of ASUU now? It’s the 2009 agreement signed by PDP government. They signed agreements with ASUU they couldn’t fulfill. We had to inherit those agreements and now struggling to renegotiate those agreements.

“Imagine how irresponsible a government can be when they went into agreements with ASUU and signed conditions that they couldn’t fulfill and that is why ASUU is on strike so let us tell Nigerians that ASUU is not on strike because APC signed an agreement with them. It was the PDP that signed the agreement.

“We are not shifting blame; we are going to tackle the problem. Between 1999 and 2015 when they handed over to the APC, ASUU was on strike 12 times. I have the statistics amounting to 900 days.”

But responding, the spokesperson for the (PDP) presidential campaign, Daniel Bwala, who appeared on Trust TV alongside Keyamo, said during the PDP government when ASUU or any of the labour unions was on strike, there were constructive engagements between the parties.

He said, “Ask Adams Oshimole who was the Lord Lugard of labour unionism of that time. He was very blunt, strong and constant on that. In all of those periods when they were on strike either by ASUU or any of the labour unions around the time of PDP, there were constructive engagement, which means all parties were honest, realistic. The argument ASUU is making on all occasions when they were on strike this present government shift the goal post.”
