U20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets Beat Canada, To Face Netherlands In Quarter-Final

The Nigeria U-20 women ‘s team, the Falconets, will face the Netherlands in the quarter-final phase of the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup taking place in Costa Rica.

The Falconets early Thursday morning recorded 100% victory in their group stage campaign by beating Canada 3-1 at the Estadio Alajuela Morera Soto.

Coach Chris Danjuma’s ladies had before now relied on late goals to secure slim 1-0 wins over France and the Korea Republic but the game against Canada was a completely different ball game.

Interestingly, it was the Canadian girls that drew the first blood, albeit from an error in the Falconets’ defence.

But two goals from the penalty spot by Esther Onyenezide and another goal in the second half by Chioma Olise saw the Falconets cruising to their biggest win so far in the ongoing tournament in Costa Rica.

Head Coach Chris Danjuma said before the Canada tie that his girls would seek to win even though they had already booked their place in the last eight.

The Falconets nonetheless conceded their first goal of the competition in an accidental manner, following goalkeeper Omini Oyono’s poor management of a backpass from Jumoke Alani.

After falling behind to the early Canada goal, Onyenezide, whose vicious curling shot earned all three points against the Korea Republic, drew the Falconets level from the penalty spot in the 24th minute.

Defender Mia Pante who had handled the ball from a Blessing Okpe shot in the box gifted Nigeria a way back into the game.

Onyenezide was on hand to shoot Nigeria into the lead, also from the spot, in the 32nd minute after Simi Awujo’s dangerous play against Mercy Idoko.

As the Nigeria U20s ended the first half 2-1, nothing suggested the Canadians could mount a fightback in the second half, instead, it was the Falconets that increased their lead.

Substitute Chioma Olise got Nigeria’s third goal as the Falconets finished top in Group C with nine points from three games.

With Thursday’s outcome, the Falconets now have a quarter-final date with The Netherlands in Alajuela on Monday.

Recall that the Norwegian goal-machine netted twice on his Premier League debut as City claimed a 2-0 win in a tough trip at West Ham.

In a chat with talkSPORT.com, Wright-Phillips believes that the striker may not fire on all cylinders in home matches but would score more goals in away games this season.

“It’s been a fantastic start for him,” Wright-Phillips told talkSPORT.com with Bet365.

“At the start of the Premier League, he’s managed to get two goals and one assist in two games. I think he’s been fantastic.

“I think he’s more likely to score more goals away from home because of the way teams play when they come to the Etihad,” he added.

Joshua, who in September 2021 lost his crown to Usyk, has reiterated his determination to retain his title belt.

In a chat with Mirror, Joshua insists he will not quit if he loses to Oleksandr Usyk in Saturday’s world heavyweight title rematch.

Inflation: Ghana’s Central Bank Raises Interest Rate To 22%

The Bank of Ghana (BOG) has increased its monetary policy rate (MPR) from 19 percent to 22 percent in a bid to curb inflationary pressures and halt the depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by the country’s central bank via a statement issued after its emergency monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting.

The monetary policy rate (MPR) is the baseline interest rate in an economy, every other interest rate used within an economy is built on it.

The BOG also raised the primary reserve requirement of banks from 12 percent to 15 percent as part of efforts to mop-up excess liquidity in the banking system.

It further announced plans to purchase all foreign exchange arising from the voluntary repatriation of export proceeds from mining, and oil and gas companies to help shore up FX liquidity.

“The committee decided on a 300 basis points increase in the monetary policy rate to 22 percent,” the BOG said in a statement.

“The committee also took the following additional measures: raise the primary reserve requirement of banks from 12 percent to 15 percent to be implemented in a phased manner: 13 percent from 1st September 2022; 14 percent by 1st October 2022; [and] 15 percent by 1st November 2022.

“To boost the supply of foreign exchange to the economy, the Bank of Ghana is working collaboratively with the mining firms, international oil companies, and their bankers to purchase all foreign exchange arising from the voluntary repatriation of export proceeds from mining, and oil and gas companies. This will strengthen the central bank’s foreign exchange auctions.”

The bank added that its ongoing policy discussions with the IMF are expected to address the underlying macroeconomic challenges, restore fiscal and debt sustainability, and provide a sustainable balance of payments cushion.

The government of Ondo State has placed fifty thousand naira (N50000) as a reward for anyone who exposes or reports incidents leading to the arrest of kidnappers or other criminals in the state.

This was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju after a weekly state executive council meeting in Akure on Wednesday, August 17.

According to Olateju, the decision was taken to improve security in the state and also to encourage citizens to give useful and timely information about criminal activities in any part of the state.

She said;

“From now on, anyone who reports a crime and we follow the trail, and it leads to a successful prosecution of the criminal, that person will be offered a reward of fifty thousand naira.

“We want people in Ondo state to say something when they see something. We want our people to be proactive in the area of security to rid Ondo State of criminals, bandits, and terrorists.

“The toll-free line is 0800-555-5555. Anybody can call to give security tips and report any criminal activities in his or her area.”

Don’t Vote Politicians With Children Abroad - ASUU President

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has asked Nigerians not to vote for politicians who have their children studying in institutions outside the country.

This was made known by the ASUU president while speaking on a Twitter Space Webinar, organized by Premium Times and tagged, ‘ASUU strike, Revitalisation Fund and the Way Forward.’

Speaking on some of the way forwards on the lingering strike, he said students should not vote for politicians who would not represent their interests.

Osodeke said, “Anybody you believe cannot take care of your interests, whose children are busy studying abroad, who are living abroad, don’t vote for them, I repeat, you don’t need to vote for them because you don’t vote for people who will take your life.”

Osodeke was responding to a question from a popular #ENDSARS activist, Rinu Oduala, on what Nigerian students could do amid the lingering ASUU strike.

Speaking further on Twitter, Osodeke said, “Education is about life. A governor was saying education is not for everybody and then we saw his son graduating outside (abroad) with governors around. I will repeat it, the Nigerian students should hold their PVC. Anybody who will not look at their interests, who, in his campaign, will not show that he’s going to improve the Nigerian educational system, they should vote them out.”

APC Reacts To Purported Plot By Party Members To Remove Adamu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to reports that there are cracks in the wall of the ruling party owing to the continued stay in office by Abdullahi Adamu as its national chairman.

Some media reports have it that some of the party stakeholders are plotting to oust Adamu as chairman of the APC.

The ruling has, however, described the reports as false, saying that there are no plans whatsoever to remove Adamu.

In a statement on Wednesday, Felix Morka, spokesman of the APC, said reports of the purported plan are sponsored by the opposition.

Morka said the opposition is “unnerved by the remarkable achievements of Senator Adamu since assuming office as the national chairman”.

“Our party and leaders are currently focused on the important task of building a strong and vibrant electoral campaign ahead, and will not be distracted by boring chirps of idle speculators,” the APC spokesman said.

“The opposition PDP is quite welcome to continue to dissipate its energies on innuendoes and chasing after phantom plots in APC rather than concentrate on mending its broken and acrimonious house.

“The national working committee of our party stands united under Senator Adamu’s leadership as national chairman with the singular commitment to winning the next general election.”

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has named Abdulmumin Jibrin and Ladipo Johnson as the spokespersons of his campaign.

The appointment of the duo was announced late Wednesday through Kwankwaso’s Twitter handle.

In his post, the former governor of Kano State said he approved the appointment of Messrs Jibrin and Johnson due to their experience in communication and networking to deliver the objectives of the party across the country.

“I have approved the appointment of Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin and Barr. Ladipo Johnson as spokespersons for my campaign council.

“I have no doubt that the duo will use their wealth of experience in communications and vast networks to deliver on our mandate for a New Nigeria,” he said.

Mr. Jibrin is a former member of the House of Representatives. He joined the NNPP in May after falling out with the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.

His defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) came as a shock to many given his allegiance to the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Mr. Johnson, on the other hand, is a lawyer and Managing Partner at Agbese & Johnson (Legal Consultants). He is also the president of the African Institute of Enterprise Development and Management.

With the choice of Mr. Johnson as his spokesperson, Kwankwaso could be said to have followed the pattern of his counterparts in the APC and PDP who have also appointed lawyers to speak for them as the commencement of the presidential campaign beckons.

Recall that 28 September was fixed for the commencement of campaign activities. It said campaigns shall hold until 24 hours before the election date. This means that all spokespersons have not less than 150 days to sell their candidates to Nigerians.

The Minister of State of Labour and Employment and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Festus Keyamo, was recently named one of the spokespersons for the APC Presidential Campaign Council while another lawyer, Daniel Bwala, was appointed a spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign Team.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is the presidential candidate of the PDP while former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, is the flag bearer of the APC.

YABA College Of Technology Demands University Status

The famous Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos State has called for its recognition as a university.

Founded in 1947, the federal polytechnic is Nigeria’s first higher educational institution.

Joe Ejiofor, the Deputy Registrar said the institution has the requirements, including facilities, needed for an upgrade.

He disclosed that there are more than 150 PhD holders, with more academics working to raise their record to PhD level.

“YABATECH has all it takes in all capacity to compare with any university in Nigeria. So, if the government decides otherwise, YABATECH can always fit in”, he told NAN.

Ejiofor listed manpower, resources, equipment, studios as some of the assets that can match those of universities.

The official added that the school is under the supervision of the National Board for Technical Education and awards National Diploma and Higher National Diploma.
