2023: Collation Of Results Will Be Manual — INEC

We Are Ready For Ondo Election, Says INEC
INEC Chairman.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said the collation of results of the 2023 general elections will be done manually despite the adoption of electronic transmission of results.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, stressed that the commission would transmit results from polling units to its result-viewing portal, IReV, as witnessed in recent elections, but that the Electoral Act was clear on how collation should be done.

Okoye said in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, “There is a marked difference between the transfer/transmission of results and the collation of results. Section 50(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022 gives the commission the absolute discretion to determine the mode and procedure of voting in an election and the transmission of election results.

“Sections 60 and 62 of the Electoral Act govern post-election procedure and collation of election results. Section 60(1) of the Act provides that the presiding officer shall, after counting the votes at a polling unit, enter the votes scored by each candidate in a form to be prescribed by the commission.

“Section 60(5) of the Act makes it mandatory that the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot in a manner prescribed by the commission. Thereafter, the presiding officer shall after recording and announcing the results deliver the same along with election materials under security and accompanied by the candidates or their polling agents, where available to such person as may be prescribed by the commission.

“The implication of this is that the collation process of results is still essentially manual, but the collation officer must collate subject to his verification and confirmation that the number of accredited voters stated on the collated result are correct and consistent with the number of accredited voters recorded and transmitted directly from polling units.”

He explained that while the collation of results would “essentially” be done manually, where there was a dispute regarding a collated result or the result from any polling unit, the collation or returning officer would use the original of the disputed collated result, accreditation data from the BVAS device and the results transmitted directly from the polling unit to determine the correctness of the result.

It’s Time To Reward Tinubu For Risking His Life For Nigeria — Campaign Council

We Will Win 14m Votes For Tinubu, Says Group
Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Global Ambassadors (BATGA), a support group for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate of Sen. Bola Tinubu has recalled how he risked his life for Nigeria in the past.

Mr Kayode Olabode, National Coordinator (BATGA), disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Olabode said the former Lagos State governor “had been working and putting his life in harm’s way for cause tailored towards making Nigeria work.”

He said that it is time for the nation to reciprocate the gesture by supporting Tinibu to win presidential election in 2023.

“Even when he was in the United States, he was there for Late MKO Abiola during his presidential campaign.

“He was a major supporter of Afenifere and NADECO pro-Democrats and good governance against the military junta.

“He came back home to contribute immensely to make Nigeria great. Let’s use Lagos State as a case study.

“As an Executive Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu stood his ground and ensured that he created 37 LCDAs in addition to 20 LGAs making a total of 57 LGA.”

Olabode said that this created lot of employments for Lagos Youths both Indigenes and non-indigenes.

He added that even when the then President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo stopped Lagos State Allocation,he managed the state’s IGR prudently and ensured he didn’t owe any civil servants.

Olabode urged Nigerians in diaspora to see Tinubu as case study of a transformational leader and a political strategist.

He described his record as feats no governor in the country since return of democracy could match.

“Prosperity will not forgive any Nigerian who fails to support Tinubu. He’s like the messiah Nigerians have been clamouring for,” he said.

Olabode said the opportunity for Nigerians in Diaspora to drum up support for one of their own to get elected as president of Nigeria has come.

He said that this would make them to be part of his government that would make Nigeria work.

Olabode further added that citizens should be more concerned about a Nigeria that works rather than ethnic politics .

He appealed to those clamouring for secession to sheath thier swords , join hands to build the country by channelling their energy, time, and resources towards that direction.

“It is actually funny how some of these people protest in foreign lands and United Nations headquarters, sadly, even if they protest on the moon, their request will not be granted.

“Dividing the country will not make any part of the country a better nation whether Yoruba Nation or Biafra.

“What every Nigerian needs at this point is to have a reorientation and change of mindset towards our country.

“It is time to be more patriotic and work effortlessly towards building a Nigeria that works rather than tribalistic Yoruba and Biafra Nation.

“You can’t be living peacefully and comfortably wherever you are and be fuelling a crisis in your motherland.

“Nobody needs a soothsayer to know that dividing Nigeria at the moment is not the solution to the myriads of problems bedeviling the country,”he said

He said that there is no country without challenges, however, with collective effort of its citizenry some of the endless challenges could be amicably resolved.

He urged all support groups and citizens for Tinubu and Shettima not to be deterred by negative comments of othe groups both online or offline but concentrate on building a formidable team in wards to guarantee victory.

She said, “Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is the first politician in the history of the zone to attract meaningful development to my community.

“I have never met Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in my life. I don’t need anything from him, he doesn’t know me as person, but I have seen the things he did for my community when he was a Governor and now as a Senator.

Dogara Write IGP, Accuses Some Policemen Of Plotting His Assassination

Yakubu Dogara

Former Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), over an alleged assassination plot.

In the petition personally signed by Dogara, the lawmaker alleged that some cops identified as Inspector Dakat Samuel, Inspector Auwalu Mohammed were conspiring with one Barau Joel Amos (Sarkin Yaki) to hatch the plot.

Dogara said although the matter is currently before the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi Command of the force, he wanted the IGP to be aware.

He said, “I am sure you are apprised of the matter since it involves looting of your armory in Bauchi by the very officers who are entrusted with the safe custody of your arms and a constituent of mine, Barau Joel Amos, who sought to buy or has been buying assault rifles from the officers.

“I have been authoritatively informed that the said Barau Joel Amos has confessed that the reason he sought to buy the rifles is to kill me and three of my constituents, vis: Bar Istifanus Bala Gambar, Rev Markus Musa (CAN Chairman, T/Balewa) and Emmanuel (Chairman NL, T/Balewa). I find it worrisome that there has be no official advise from the police relating to this credible threat to our lives to enable us beef up security around us or just to be careful about our movements. More so, there is a spike in cases of kidnappings and killings by unknown gunmen especially in Lere District of T/Balewa. A case in point was the attack at Boto town where some relations of a former Governor of the State were killed while some were abducted.

“In view of the deteriorating security situation in T/Balewa LGA where the suspect comes from, I wish to appeal to you to use your good offices to ensure that a thorough and all encompassing investigation is carried out so that all those in the loop are apprehended and brought to book in order to restore lasting peace in the Lere District of T/Balewa LGA. With all due respect, this is a matter that must not be handled with kid gloves.

“His confession relating to those who gave him or contributed the money for him to be using to procure weapons. His Bank Statements and phone call logs will definitely collaborate his confessions. Granted his meager salary as a store keeper in a Secondary School, it will have taken him a lifetime savings to be able to raise the N1.2m cash which he wanted to use to buy the two rifles. It must be noted that he does not earn any additional dime from any known legitimate business he is known to operate. So the said Barau Joel Amos could not have been acting alone, it is clear that he is being fully funded by his ilks; some evil and criminally minded people.

“Is it in vain that upon hearing that Barau Joel Amos has been arrested and detained that his closest associates all fled T/Balewa town? It will be important to apprehend them no matter where they may be hiding within the country so that they may tell the authorities what they know that scared them to the point of abandoning their families at home while they live as fugitives elsewhere”.

“There are witnesses in T/Balewa town to the criminal activities of the said Barau Joel Amos and his close associates most of whom have now fled the town to avoid arrest as it is said, the guilty run even when no one is pursuing him. I am sure so many patriotic residents of T/Balewa town will be more than willing to provide the needed assistance to investigators.”

Dogara urged the IGP” to ensure that this matter is thoroughly investigated at the highest level and to ensure the prosecution of these type of people who kill others, live off and profiteer from crimes, I also urge you to help expose this criminal enterprise in order to protect us who have been named as those to be killed and the public. Let me hasten to add that it is in the public interest for you to do so.”

Dogara currently represents Bogoro, Dass, Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency.

More Than 200 Soldiers Not Seeking Voluntary Retirement Because Of Low Morale — Army

The army on Saturday said the voluntary discharge of over 200 soldiers is not due to alleged corruption, poor service conditions and low morale.

The army was reacting to reports that 243 soldiers in the North-East and other theatres had applied for voluntary retirement.

Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the development but argued it was a routine process.

He described insinuations soldiers were leaving the military due to poor working conditions as “a concoction of the imagination of the unrepentant enemies of the nation and mischief makers and should be outrightly discountenanced by the public.”

“The subjective and unethical report is a distraction and another failed attempt at dampening the morale and fighting will of the loyal, dedicated and patriotic fighting force of the NA,” the statement added.

“Perhaps these impenitent mischief makers need to be schooled to understand that the NA is not a conscript Army and that recruitment into the NA is voluntary with extant policy on discharge and retirement of soldiers and officers respectively, like other organizations. This provides its personnel the opportunity to apply for voluntary discharge, when they deem fit and meet the terms and conditions as stipulated in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/ratings/airmen (Revised) 2017.

“It is thus, the inalienable right of a personnel to voluntarily or on medical grounds apply for discharge, if they meet the terms. It is therefore not an aberration that the COAS granted approval for 91 NA/32/4792 WO NDAGANA ISHIAKU and 242 others to voluntarily discharge from the NA, as being unprofessionally manipulated by some media.”

The army said such reports were targeted “at deflating the high morale of troops by downplaying recent critical interventions by the COAS Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya on troops’ welfare, which include car loans, housing loans, extensive construction of new accomodation, massive renovation of old and dilapidated accomodation, building of befitting residences and issuing of vehicles to Regimental Sergeant Majors, scholarship awards to children and wards of fallen heroes and other unique interventions in the theatres of operation to sustain the heightening morale of troops.

“These interventions evidently account for troops’ game changing onslaught in the North East.

“It must also be mentioned, that the quantum of equipment that have been injected into the theatres and prompt payment of operational allowances, have all turned the tide against the insurgents. Also worthy of note is the welfare flight for troops, which has significantly reduced the burden of troops travelling in and out of the theatres, in addition to huge commitment on the medical needs of wounded-in-action soldiers and the barracks communities. Equally important, is the fact that troops are now being regularly and consciously rotated from the frontline, hence, issues of overstay and battle fatigue are gradually being overcome. Suffice to say, that some of these recently discharged soldiers are beneficiaries of these giant strides.

“The COAS, once again congratulates the discharging personnel for their gallantry, patriotism, loyalty and courage while in service and wishes them the very best as they successfully exit active service from the NA. He also reiterates his avowed determination to continue to have direct impact on the welfare and wellbeing of both serving and retired personnel. He is also assuring the retirees that soon, their various commanders would organise a farewell luncheon in their honour, as it is the practice in the NA since Gen Yahaya took over command.”
