Jamie Carragher has slammed Virgil van Dijk for failing to close down Jadon Sancho as he opened the scoring for Manchester United on Monday night, against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

United secured their first win of the season after edging Liverpool 2-1 with Sancho opening the scoring, showing composure inside the Reds penalty area.

He sat down both James Milner and Alisson before side-footing into the net.

But having sat down Milner and Alisson, van Dijk chose not to approach Sancho, which allowed the ex-Dortmund man to get his shot away, with van Dijk opting to chance his luck and get in the way of the shot – his hands behind his back.

It gave Sancho time and space to pick his spot. Marcus Rashford made it two, before Mo Salah got one for Liverpool.

But the game finished 2-1 to United – leaving Liverpool with just two points from three games. Carragher was critical

“Van Dijk has got to come out, I don’t understand,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“He’s 10/10 for most things, but one thing I do question him on, he does lack intensity. Even in the Champions League final,” Carragher said, pitchside at Old Trafford on Sky Sports.

“He’s rarely seen on the floor and that’s a good thing for a defender. But sometimes you’ve got to just throw yourself at it. He made himself smaller, be more aggressive and slide in.”

There have been question marks surrounding van Dijk this season, already. He looked uncomfortable and nervous against Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Dutchman conceded a penalty in which Mitrovic scored to draw Fulham level.

Ebola: DR Congo Records New Case

The Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed a new case of Ebola in its violence-wracked east, the country’s health ministry said, just weeks after the end of a previous epidemic.

The sample from a 46-year-old woman who died on August 15 in Beni city, North Kivu province, “tested positive” for Ebola, DR Congo’s health ministry said in a statement published late Monday.

It added that tests showed the case is linked to a previous strain of the virus from 2018 and was not a new variant.

The ministry sought to reassure the public that officials were “hard at work on the ground” to respond to the situation.

Around 160 people have been identified as contact cases, it added.

Human transmission is through body fluids, with the main symptoms being fever, vomiting, bleeding and diarrhea.

NSCDC Imo Command Denies Receiving Report On Organ Harvesting

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Cross River, has impounded 16,000 litres of stolen petroleum products in the state.

The state NSCDC Commandant, Mr Samuel Fadeyi, said the stolen products which are mainly Automotive Gas Oil also known as diesel, were stored in drums and gallons and hidden at trailer parks across the state.

Speaking with journalists on Monday in Calabar while inspecting the seized petroleum products, Fadeyi said the search became necessary following an instruction from the Commandant General of NSCDC that some illegal activities were going on in parks.

According to him, they went to trailer parks in Cross River and discovered that hawkers had stored a lot of petroleum products in drums and hidden it.

“Within the last two weeks, we have impounded about 16,000 litres of AGO from different spots in the state.

“Some of the places we went to, we met a lot of hostilities, so we make sure that we destroy the capacity of the perpetrators from continuing in the business and quickly exit the area to avoid human casualties.

“Some of these hawkers work like cartels, once they see security officials they attack and escape but we make sure we impound the products,” he said.

Fadeyi further said he had contacted the leadership of the parks and their unions for a meeting because of the negative impact the activities of the hawkers have on their integrity.

He said the operation wasn’t a witch-hunt but to send a strong message because of the negative impact of the activities of the hawkers on the nation’s economy and the environment through smuggling and adulteration.

He commended the Nigerian Navy Ship Victory and Sector 4, Operation Delta Safe, for joining the corps during the operation to impound and arrest smugglers of petroleum products from Nigeria to Cameroon.

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated the State-Local Government Joint Accounts Committee, disclosing that the state was heavily indebted to pensioners.

Press Secretary to Soludo, Christian Aburime, said the inauguration was done shortly after the State Executive Council Meeting at the Government House, Awka.

The committee is chaired by the state Commissioner for Local Government, TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, with state Commissioner for Finance, Ifeatu Onejeme; and Dr Arinze Nwankwo-Ikwueto, as Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively. بيت٣٦٥

“Resources are not there, you are being called upon to do this work at a time when there are challenges in the finances of the country, the state and local government and you have been called upon to find the solution,” he said.

Soludo said his administration would set up the local government administration that would address the challenges in that layer of government.

He pointed out that the infrastructure in the various local government areas, including those burnt down by arsonists, needed to be repaired to enable council staff to go to offices and perform optimally.

“For us, we have a vision to have responsibility devolved to base and to have local government that is empowered to deliver development to the grassroot.

“Consequently, the finances that are very limited will have to be run in a different way; we have a peculiar local government system where the staff and other obligations of the local government are pulled together,” he said.

Nwabunwanne, who spoke on behalf of the committee, described his team as competent and ready to deliver on their mandate and thanked the governor for finding them worthy.

Other members of the committee include Mr. featu Obiokoye, representing Central Senatorial district, Dr. Nnamdi Nwadiogbu for North Senatorial district and Mr George Ezeogudi for South Senatorial district.

Representatives of Transition Committee Chairman are Dr. Chibuike Ofobuike, South; Mrs. Amaka Obi, Central; and Mr. Livinus Onyenwe, North.

The United States Government, through its Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has sent a delegation to Nigeria to learn capacity building for global health security, disease detection, preparedness and response.

The Director of Global Health Advocacy, United Nations Foundation, Mr. Brian Massa, who led the delegation to the National Reference Laboratory of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in Abuja recently, said the delegation were on a learning visit to Nigeria.

“We are here at the national reference lab in NCDC to learn about the great work that the Nigerian government is doing with capacity building for global health security, disease detection, preparedness and response.

“Nigeria is in line with the IHR, core capacities, that are required to detect, assess, notify and respond to public health risks and emergencies of national and international concern, as stipulated in Articles 5 and 13, and Annex 1, of the Regulations,” he said.

Massa said that the delegation observed the laboratory diagnostic facilities, and discuss the importance of resilient health systems, the integration and data-sharing of country-wide disease detection, and the country’s response to the current Monkeypox outbreak amongst others.

“This year’s visit to Nigeria will further develop the roster of Congressional staffers who work on global health policy to understand how bilateral Global Health Security investments in the country have strengthened global health security and pandemic preparedness,” he disclosed.

According to him, it was a great partnership between the Nigerian government and the United States government.

“So the US CDC has provided very generous and important support on collaboration with the NCDC to provide training, technical capacity building and to be able to detect diseases early,” he added.

Massa said through partnerships with the NCDC, the US CDC is improving the quality of critical public health services in the country.

Also speaking, the Director-General, NCDC, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa ,said the NCDC’s NRL in Abuja is the organization’s focal laboratory providing High-Quality Public Health Laboratory Services, coordinating laboratory-based surveillance and providing oversight to state public health laboratories in the country.

Adetifa said that the US Government through the USCDC and implementing partners have supported the agency with laboratory equipment, consumables, reagents and technical support.

“As such, over the last several years, the U.S Congress supported by the UN Foundation has organized Congressional learning trips to observe “global health”, UN peacekeeping, humanitarian, and development operations across the globe, highlighting the US-UN partnership in the field,” he explained.

The NCDC boss said that the US congressional delegation is made up of staffers and principal aides of the US senators and members of the House of Representatives or Congress with a task in health services, global health or health security.

“So they are here on behalf of their principals. Because within their principals’ offices, they handle health-related or global health issues.

“And it’s important that they understand in visits such as this where the US government investments are going, what they are achieving, and what other areas may require support, even as they think about their national security, and think about global health security, as a whole.

“And it also, provides us with an opportunity to lay out areas that we may require support, either directly by what we say or indirectly by what they see,” he explained.

The World Health Organization, representative, Dr. Kofi Boateng, EPI Focal Point, Universal Health Coverage said that there have been significant improvements in the country’s laboratories which is a critical area of health security.

Boating said that the country can detect, assess, report, and respond to public health events, which is the core capability of IHR.

He, however, said that as the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, investing in preparedness is much cheaper and more effective than funding responses.

While stressing WHO’s continuous support in the country, he said that Investment in preparation must be founded on continuous community engagement, coordination between sectors, and sensitive and flexible surveillance and response systems.

Sen. Kalu Donates Relief Materials, Cash To Striking ASUU Members, Seeks End To Action

Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu on Monday donated relief items to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The ASUU members drawn from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike besieged Kalu’s Igbere residence to seek his intervention to end the crisis.

Leader of the delegation, Engr. Dr. Okoro Christopher Kalu, a senior lecturer also sought Orji Kalu’s assistance to cushion the effect of the economic hardship on their members as a result of “the no-work-no-pay” imposed by the federal government against striking members of the Union.

Recall that since the commencement of the strike in February this year, Nigerian students in public universities have remained at home for six months.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke had confirmed that none of its members has been paid since the union embarked on industrial action in February 2022.

However, speaking at Kalu’s residence Engr. Christopher said the strike action had brought untold hardship on them and their families due to the no work no pay rule by the Federal Government, urging Kalu to intervene by assisting them.

Making reference to Abia State University when he was Governor, the former governor told the gathering that the strike could have been avoided.

Sen. Kalu Chief Whip of the Senate added that as Governor the state University never went on strike throughout his eight-year tenure. He alluded to the reason for the prompt payment of lecturers’ salaries, leave allowances, 13th month, and other emoluments.

He reiterated his earlier appeal to the Federal Government to resume payment of salary to striking university lecturers. Kalu maintained there was a need for the union and the federal government to reach a truce immediately for the benefit of students. Due to his Love for Education and its importance, Kalu said he introduced a free education policy throughout his tenure as Governor and never owed Teachers and other civil servants.

Kalu addressed the ASUU members; “We have been pushing for the strike to end. I also suggested that even if the strike continues, some lecturers’ salaries should be paid, so that people can see money for eating food. When I was Governor, Abia State University never went on strike for a single day for eight years. The only day they went on strike was when they engaged in a sympathy strike with the University of Ilorin and it was a warning strike. Then I held a meeting with their leadership and I told them that I have given them everything they need. I pay them 13th-month salary, leave allowances, bonuses and you want to join a strike with a University that does not receive such? They apologised to me and went back to duty. That is the only attempt to strike in ABSU because I had an agreement with them. I told them that there mustn’t be any strike and that students must graduate immediately as at when due and we maintained that level.

Speaking further Kalu said; “Honestly, I sympathise with you all sincerely from my heart and because I am close to so many of you. We shall make sure that before the end of this month everyone gets back to school, we have spoken to the minister so that both parties can sir and resolve this issue once and all. I think that this issue should never have happened to our country. How I wish I was the Minister, because I know and understand the meaning of Education. This was why when I was Governor I made sure that Education was free in this state and the teachers were promptly paid, so none of the teachers engaged in side jobs or asked the students to buy unnecessary books. This made them concentrate on imparting knowledge to the students.

“As Governor, Abia State University was one the best in the country, for six years running the faculty of law from Abia State University produced the best law students in the Law School Abuja, the same with our Medical graduates. Today the hospital I built in Aba I’m not sure the hospital is still existing. All the general hospitals I rebuilt from Isuikwuato, Isiala Ngwa to Ukwa, Abriba to Umunne Nnaeato here have been abandoned.

Responding, Christopher lauded Kalu’s concern for their plight and that of the students. He assured to convey Kalu’s message to their communities and prayed for God’s guidance and protection on the Senate Chief Whip.

The Senate Chief Whip while concluding donated a bag of rice to each of the lecturers numbering over ninety, a Livestock cattle, and cash sum to the union.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) yesterday denied an increase in charges payable by stakeholders in the sector.

FAAN specifically debunked the rumour that it had increased the landing and parking charges payable by foreign and domestic airlines.

The Director General of NCAA, Capt Musa Nuhu, and Managing Director of FAAN, Capt Rabiu Yadudu, spoke at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on the sidelines of the tour of the terminal by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

There has been disquiet in the aviation sector over alleged increase in charges by service providers in the industry.

Capt Nuhu described the reports as “completely and outright false”, saying NCAA could not increase charges without the stakeholders’ input.

He said, “As the DG of NCAA, I am not aware and I have not authorised any charge increase. Misinformation is creating a lot of problems. The truth of the matter is that the last time NCAA increased its charges was 10 years ago.

“If we were charging N5,000 about 10 years ago and we are still charging that, then you calculate the inflationary pressures. We are not recovering our costs. We are providing services and subsidising them.

“We understand the difficulties facing the industry now, but going forward, we have to sit down and review it because NCAA does not get any money from the federal government. All our revenues are internally generated, and we need this to provide the appropriate services for the safety, security and efficient service delivery to the public.”

On his part, the FAAN MD said the last time the authority increased landing and parking charges was in 2002 for foreign airlines and in 2012 for domestic airlines.

He said, “The media report that FAAN increased landing and parking across Nigeria is wrong and misleading. FAAN has not increased landing and parking fees since 2002 for international operators.

“Domestic landing and parking fees were last reviewed by FAAN in 2012 when tickets were being sold for N6,000, and now they are being sold for much more. There are more than enough reasons for FAAN to increase the fees, but we have not.”

Over 1,500 Persons Kidnapped Within Six Months In Kaduna, Says Commissioner For Internal Security

Gunmen riding on a speedboat have kidnapped the Chairman of the Abissa Council of Chiefs in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, High Chief Matthew Opoto.

Opoto was reportedly seized and taken away while on his way to his community in the Abissa waterway.

The marauders were said to have intercepted the boat conveying Opoto alongside some members of his council of chiefs and forced the occupants to identify their target.

An indigene of the area, Minaibiye Dolphin, who confirmed the incident said the monarch was a few minutes to his destination when the assailants struck.

He said: “The chairman of Abissa council of chiefs High Chief Mathew Opito, (3rd) was travelling with some of his chiefs and about five minutes to arrive the community, gunmen came in a speed boat, identified him and took him away.

“We have no information about him. The entire community is worried, the chiefs, elders, youths and women, everybody is worried because there is no information about him up till now”.

Dolphin called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Navy Ship, Pathfinder (NNS Pathfinder) and the Rivers State Government to intervene and facilitate his release. لعبة فلوس حقيقية

He said: “We are appealing and calling on the Rivers State Governor, Barr. شرح بلاك جاك Nyesom Wike, the police, Army and the NNS Pathfinder and other security agencies to help and secure his release.

“There is no information as to why they kidnapped him, since we are not able to get in contact with the kidnappers,” he said.

How Kwankwaso Betrayed Me, My Supporters — Shekarau

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has accused Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso of disappointing him and his supporters who joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Shekarau, who dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the height of the rift with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, spoke when he met with his supporters and associates in Kano on Monday.

He accused Kwankwaso of neglecting the request submitted for inclusion of his associates as party’s candidates.

He said his numerous reminders to Kwankwaso before the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were not appreciated.

According to him, he had been consulting with Kwankwaso to carry his supporters along but to no avail.

“We consulted our brother Kwankwaso prior to even his joining NNPP when he was in PDP and I was in APC. After we agreed to join NNPP, prior to closing submission of list to INEC, we designed areas and places to field candidates for state to Federal Government. I met him alone on 5 May at about 8:30. Two of us alone, he said he’ll study it and suggest to his advisory team.

“On 15th May, I went to his house and reminded him of our submission of proposal. He said that he will come and discuss with me. On 16th May, he came to my house and we discussed. He called Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Kawu Sumaila, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and Aminu Abdussalam, he said he gave them the work and we told him we need to inject our people.

“On the 17th May, a day after, I summoned advisory team of Shura of what happened. Some said everything should be written but I said no let’s have confidence and have faith in them.

“On the 18th May, after our decamping, we announced our reasons to the media and public that we ditched APC because of injustice. That day we saw list of purported NNPP candidates. On Thursday 19 May I boarded plane to Abuja and sought audience from Kwankwaso at his convenience.

“We’ve agreed after Isha prayer. I went to his house and told him we’ve seen list with my name only and Shehu Kura. What’s the position of our submission? He said his four man committee will be given the work. I suggested to add four from my camp to make it 8. He agreed and we planned to fix date… On 20th May, I wrote to him what we’ve discussed to avoid forgetfulness in a text message.

“June 1, I reminded Kwankwaso of the committee work he promised to talk to them. On 2 June I discussed with Prof Rufai Alkali national chairman of the NNPP and I advised him to talk to Kano chair.

“On his declaration day, I reminded him of the committee pending work. Time was going, we resolved to meet alongside his closet aides Kwankwaso, Abba, party chair, Umar Muhammad, and I. The chair gave issue but said he submitted their proposal to party chair, Doguwa.

“On July 4, the chairman brought out their proposal. We added chairman to the committee making them 9. They have written recommendation for candidates from both sides. 9 of them signed and gave me a copy and to Kwankwaso.

“15 July, I printed two copies of the report and took them to his house. I gave him like 10 minutes. He said he had no objection and I said the same. He called Abba Kabir Yusuf and told me they have accepted the report and be implemented in three days. Two weeks after Abba didn’t call for meeting until INEC closed submission of candidate in July and on August 12 substitution closed. Then he called for a meeting.

“After the deadline elapsed, we called Advisory committee and we set up a committee to advise us on the way forward. We accept the report on Thursday, will study and consult, and in a few days, we will announce our stand. I wouldn’t have opened up if not for Kwankwaso guilty conscience that he talked to the media. We want to set the record straight on the saying that we were late. So that people can be well informed. It is better to abandon politics than to live in injustice and deception. Did we take directive before joining where we are now? Shall we then seek your permission to join others?” he asked.
