"Reasons Why I Turned Down Man United Offer" — Kevin Trapp

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has revealed why he rejected an approach from Premier League heavyweights Manchester United.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper to provide competition and cover for David de Gea and had shown interest in Trapp.

The German was pivotal in Frankfurt’s Europa League win last season and despite initially mulling over a switch to the Premier League, he has opted to stay put.

Speculation regarding Trapp’s future was so fierce that the 32-year-old announced his decision via a message on the club’s Twitter account.

“There have been a lot of reports about interest from Manchester United.

“It’s true that a written offer was tabled. Since it came from such a world-famous club, of course, I considered it.

“Yesterday I informed the management of both clubs that I’ve decided to stay at Eintracht. We’ve made history here together and experienced some unforgettable things. I have absolute faith in us!”

Unlike United, Trapp will turn out for Eintracht in the Champions League following their Europa League success against Rangers in May.

He made a return to Eintracht in 2019 after initially leaving the club in 2015 to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent four years.

Trapp was part of the PSG side that was beaten in the infamous 6-1 Champions League Round of 16 clashes against Barcelona at the Nou Camp in 2017.

With the door now firmly closed on a deal for Trapp, United has wasted no time in turning their attention elsewhere with Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka a possibility.

Popular rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has alleged that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is working with the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate Peter Obi in London.

Adeyanju claimed that Obasanjo was trying to get some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to work with Obi.

He made the claim while reacting to the meeting between Obasanjo, Obi, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, and Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.

Others are Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, of Abia State.

The Nigerian leaders were on Thursday seen in photographs as they met for yet-to-be-identified reasons in the United Kingdom.

There are speculations that the reason for the foreign meeting could not be unconnected with the 2023 presidential election.

Recall that Wike has been aggrieved with the PDP and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, after the party’s presidential primaries.

Wike is aggrieved that Atiku ignored him and picked the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

Reacting to the meeting, Adeyanju said Obasanjo wants a power shift to the Southern part of the country.

In a tweet, the activist said the former president wouldn’t stand for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

He wrote: “OBJ meets Obi & PDP Govs in London.

“Like I said a few days ago, Obj is supporting Obi and trying to get some PDP people to work for him but many of them are scamming Baba.

“OBJ’s position is that power must go back to the South and nothing else but he can’t stand Tinubu.”

You Have Failed Nigerians, Tender Public Apology – Group Tells President Buhari
Muhammadu Buhari

A group under the auspices of the Middle Belt United Assembly (MBUA), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to tender a public apology to Nigerians over the level of hardship and insecurity in the country, accusing him of not fulfilling his campaign promises.

The group recalled that Buhari in 2015, promised to secure Nigerians and improve their wellbeing, lamenting that the economy, security, and other aspects of life became worse under his administration.

Speaking with journalists in Kaduna, on Thursday, the group’s President, Comrade Moses Mwarga Aji explained that Nigerians are experiencing the worst of their lives by going to bed with empty stomachs as the price of food and other products in the market had doubled compared to what the President inherited in 2015.

Aji noted that even with much hunger in the land, Nigerians, especially in the Northern region, were in total fear of the unknown and could no longer do anything to earn a living following the insecurity ravaging communities.

He explained, “We call on President Buhari to tender a public apology to Nigerians over his failed promises on security, economy, and fighting corruption. From bad in 2015 to worse now.”

He called on the international community to mount pressure on President Buhari to secure the nation and conduct free and fair elections in 2023 that would usher in credible leaders that will move the country forward.

He lamented that “The nation is in suspense over the fate of 2023 general elections as some prominent Nigerians are expressing fears that elections may not be held because of insecurity. Elections must be held as planned, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Nigerians will not accept postponement of elections.

“President Buhari should leave a legacy behind for Nigerians. The way things stand now in the country, Nigerians may not remember Mr. President when he leaves office. They may remember him only when insecurity, corruption, and hardship are mentioned. Please, Mr. President, use the remaining few months to correct and reset Nigeria on the path of progress, unity, and development.”

ASUU Strike

The Parents Teachers’ Association of Nigeria has debunked the statement that it will contribute 10, 000 naira each for Nigerian students, for the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end the 6 months strike.

Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, the National President of the association, in a statement, distanced the group from the claim.

He explained that the PTA was not aware of the statement and warned anybody or a group of people from using their names to cause confusion in the country.

According to him, “We are not involved in any statement related to paying money to ASUU for them to call off the ongoing strike.”

He added, “Our stand since the inception of the strike is for both the ASUU and the federal government to come to an agreement, which is to end the strike but not to contribute money to pay ASUU.”

While still appealing to the federal government to listen to the demand of ASUU, the President of PTA also begged the federal government to rescue all kidnapped secondary school students and other Nigerians across the country that are still in bandits’ captivity.

Danjuma decried the current situation in Yawuri, where kidnapped female students are still in bandits’ captivity for over 400 days.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said that the Buhari administration has justified all its debts by constructing various infrastructures across the nation.

Fashola stated this at the closing ceremony of the 28th National Council of Works meeting held in Kano on Thursday.

The Minister explained that the Federal Government had been able to deliver more than 1,800 kilometers of roads across the six geo-political zones so far, stressing that the Buhari-led Administration was determined to complete all the ongoing projects before the expiration of its tenure in May next year.

In his remarks, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said there was a need for synergy between the federal highways and states to achieve the set objectives.

He commended the Buhari administration for initiating various projects in his state.

The five-day council meeting which started on Monday with the theme: “Infrastructure, the season of completion”, brought together various stakeholders from all states of the federation.

The Federal High Court, sitting in Abakaliki, yesterday, voided the Local Government Area election conducted by Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSEIC, in the state.

The election, which was conducted on July 30, 2022, has been causing lots of ripples and disagreements among the opposition political parties, even as they argued that the election was conducted without following due process of law and provisions of the new Electoral Act, 2022.

The plaintiffs in the matter were Otu Collins Eleri, Nelson Eze, Alaa Ikechukwu, Michael Ali and Isu Amechi, while the defendants included the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission and government of Ebonyi State.

The Presiding Judge, Fatun Riman, in a suit No. FHC/AI/CS/151/2022, ruled that the conduct of the Ebonyi local government election was undemocratic and unlawful and, therefore, declared it null and void.

Addressing Newsmen, the Counsel to the Plaintiffs, Mudi Erenede declared that “it is undemocratic and unlawful to conduct an election into the local government areas or council elections without availing the plaintiffs with the exact law that is meant to regulate the exercise.”

According to him: “There are lots of other issues, which did not comply with the Electorial Act 2022.

“The electoral act 2022 said the procedures for conducting elections into the local government areas by state commissioners must comply with that procedure for conducting into area councils in the FCT.

“If you look at it, how do you access compliance without law if you hide the law with which you want to conduct the election. Is it not when you make the law public that we will know whether you complied with it or not? How can you be making laws and hiding them?

“My position now is that my clients demanded to be availed of this law. We came under the freedom of information act. We wrote to EBSIEC, we wrote the House of Assembly, we wrote to INEC whose responsibilities all of these bodies refused to provide with the law.” Reacting, the State Government, through Chooks Oko, the SA to Governor David Umahi on (Media & Strategy) argued that “it is on record that none of the grounds of the litigants included nullification of the election but the court bizarrely came up with such an order.”

Igbo monarchs, yesterday, called on the Federal Government to quickly end the level of killings and kidnappings in the country through an innovative approach.

The monarchs, under the Igbo Traditional Rulers Forum, led by His Royal Highness, HRH, Obi of Obinugwu, HRM Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, made this call after their emergency meeting held in Owerri.

It was the view of the traditional rulers that the level of insecurity in the country was crippling the country’s economy and therefore it is time to stop it.

To end insecurity, the traditional rulers said they had set up a security committee and the committee would advise the best way of dialogue between the monarchs, the state and Federal governments on how to address the issue of insecurity.

According to them, “We, the Igbo traditional rulers are calling on the Federal Government to do anything reasonably within its powers to halt the menace of insecurity in the country before it ruins the nation’s economy.”

They described “Insecurity as a malaise that has crippled socio-economic and political fabrics, and growth in the country. The spate of insecurity in the country requires an innovative approach to address it.

“Following the alarming rate of banditry and kidnappings, empowering the youths to be gainfully self-reliant through their respective communities’ leaderships rather than politicizing such empowerment programmes might be a panacea to the rising cases of insecurity in the country.

“We have also announced the setting up of a security committee which is expected to advise the FORUM on how best to meaningfully dialogue with the federal and state governments to proffer realistic ways of addressing the menace of insecurity in Igboland and Nigeria as a nation. We also advised traditional rulers to remain non-partisan before and during the 2023 electioneering campaigns to protect the dignity of the institution.”

They further said: “We also paid glowing tributes to Uzodimma for the cordial relationship between the governor and the traditional institution. We implored other governors to emulate Uzodimma’s humane nature as well as his respect for the traditional institution. The traditional rulers in Igboland will always be praying for his success and well-being.”

They further showered encomiums on the governor for positively transforming Imo State within his few years in office”
