The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has said the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is no longer an ‘Igbo project’.

The National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, said the Igbo had “exported him to the rest of Nigeria”, and added that Nigerians had “accepted and domesticated him”.

He spoke on the backdrop of the recent visit by some Igbo elders to the Sultan of Sokoto and the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Abubakar, to intensify consultation and concretise plans for a president from Igbo extraction in 2023.

The Secretary-General of Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, Prof. Charles Nwekeaku had told The PUNCH that the Igbo felt “betrayed by the Peoples Democratic Party, amongst other political parties.”

According to him, the Igbo have found another route to the 2023 presidency through Obi, who he said, had received the backing of northerners.

Reacting, Ogbonnia, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, backed the elders.

He said, “As you must have heard, some Igbo elders are doing some consultations. We are still insisting on Igbo presidency. In the first place, if you watch the polity, you will see a lot of advocacies about Igbo presidency by Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“We, the Igbo people, are so happy. We brought out our goods in the market and Nigerians bought them. What else do you expect us to do? We are happy. All Igbo are happy.

“Throughout last year and the year before, we have been talking about the Igbo presidency. Ohanaeze struggled to bring it to the fore. Luckily for us, Nigerians have bought it and domesticated it. Our product has been purchased.

“It is clear that the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is no longer an Igbo project. He is now a national project. Ohanaeze has pushed out the matter to the rest of Nigeria,” he said.

Meanwhile, the factional Chairman of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Lagos Branch, Chief Solomon Ogbonna-Aguene, said Igbo people would only vote for a candidate with the interest of the South-East region at heart.

He also advised Igbo indigenes in Lagos not to ‘put their eggs in one basket’ while trying to support a presidential candidate.

He said Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos had agreed to only vote for a presidential candidate who would better the lives and change the fortunes of Ndigbo in Lagos.

Ogbonna-Aguene said, “Ndigbo in Lagos should not put their eggs in one basket. We must be mindful of what we say. Whoever you vote for should be able to change your life for the better. Also, we have to know the person with the interest of Ndigbo at heart; one who prioritises Ndigbo. That is the one we will vote for the presidency.

“So, I am telling you is the truth. Any account outside what I am telling is a lie and it will remain a lie forever.”

Effiong ,however called for a sweeping reform of the criminal justice system, as according to him, many innocent citizens were languishing in the custodial centers for not committing offences to warrant their imprisonment.

The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Muhammad Bello, has accused traders and beggars from neighbouring states of being behind the security breaches witnessed in the territory.

This is as the FCT Security Committee, chaired by the Minister, said it would work with the various communities to build a viable vigilante network in the rural communities, especially those prone to incidences of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism, among others.

Represented at the meeting by the FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramotu Tijani-Aliyu, the minister also said the committee had concluded plans to launch the resuscitated G-7 Security Joint Operation in September 2022, involving states that are contagious to the FCT.

The G-7 Joint Security Operation is expected to fight crime in all the nooks and crannies of the member-states, especially the rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism in the rural areas of the FCT and states bordering the FCT.

These were contained in a statement by Director, Information & Communication, the FCT, Muhammad Sule, on Friday.

The statement partly read, “The Security Agencies in the FCT have up their game. People who have no business being here, are being sent away.

“Some of them come under different guises such as begging, street trading, among others. They usually come from neighbouring states and are causing security breaches here. That is why we have decided to send them out.”

The FCT Police Commissioner, Sunday Babaji, said the G-7 Joint Security Operation that was being revived had received the support of sister security agencies as well as the Commissioners of Police in the member-states, who had all agreed on the need to collectively flush-out these criminals.

He revealed that the security agencies have gathered useful and actionable intelligence and would soon go after all criminals within its jurisdiction.

2023: Atiku, Tinubu, Others Made Wike Political HERO By Chasing Him Up And Down – Bakare

2023: APC Will Be Doomed If President Buhari Allows Free, Fair Elections – Gov Wike
Governor Nyesom Wike

Alhaji Ahmed Bakare, a public commentator, has berated the former vice president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, and the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, for making Nyesom Wike a political hero.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, Alhaji Bakare lamented that the Rivers State Governor had been made the doyen of Nigeria’s politics because of the two cabals chasing him everywhere in the name of joining their camps.

He said that the two old brigades and their associates have been following Wike, begging him to form an alliance with them as if Wike is all and all in Nigeria’s politics.

“Atiku has already forgotten that he once told the whole world that with or without Wike and Rivers State, he could still win election, then why is he chasing him everywhere,” he added.

“Apart from Atiku, Tinubu, and their associates, the media also contributed in building Wike’s political dynasty in Nigeria because everything about Wike always appears on the front pages of our national dailies.

“One thing they don’t know is that wike being the Governor of Rivers State has no constitutional power to force anybody to vote against his or her conscience.

“He has just one vote and he Wike cannot claim that everybody in Rivers State is with him.”

Bakare said that the Rivers State Governor has been in the news almost daily because they made him so great and so important, saying that both the ruling APC and opposition PDP have internal crises that their presidential candidates are supposed to have settled before chasing Wike around.

Speaking on the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, Bakare said that the party is on fire as the party’s chairman, Board of Trustee chairman, and the presidential candidate of the party are all from the northern region, advising Atiku to settle that issue first before Wike’s issue.

He said that people like Wike from the southern part of the country are unhappy with the development, pointing out that even the party’s leadership is confused over this issue.

On Tinubu and the All Progressive Congress (APC), he said that the party also has the problem of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, which the Christians, especially in the North, have been kicking against it outrightly.

Bakare quoted the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, saying that the Muslim/Muslim ticket was designed to kill, maim and eliminate Christianity from the entire system.

Bakare said that Babachir explained that the Muslim/Muslim ticket was aimed at eliminating Christians from any political, economic, educational, and social benefits of the country.

The public commentator, therefore, advised both Atiku and Tinubu to put their houses in order before making Wike a political hero.

“Both the APC and PDP should know better that the internal crisis rocking their parties are capable of denying them victory in 2023, and 1,000 of Wikes may not prevent the actions of Nigerians.

“Let APC not think that the Nigerians of yesteryears are still the Nigerians of today as the insecurity situation, economic hardships, high cost of living, and many other negative factors have made the electorates to be wiser politically.

“If time is not taken, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi may capitalize on their lapses of APC and PDP to run away with a landslide victory in the 2023 presidential election.

“The APC has come under serious criticisms, especially on the insecurity situation, abject poverty, and high cost of living in the land. The party, therefore, needs a lot of homework to convince Nigerians on why the party must return to power in 2023.

“If the APC capitalizes on the power of incumbency, it will fail woefully in 2023. The party leaders should reflect on what happened in the just concluded Osun governorship election, where PDP ran away with victory even though the APC candidate was a seating Governor.

“The PDP in the State capitalized on the lapses of APC like insecurity, abject poverty, high cost of living, and many other negative factors to convince electorates to revolt against APC through the ballot box.

“If the homework is not done properly, the same fate may befall APC in the presidential election because Nigerians are tired of the party’s government and are crying out for a total change.”

He urged the two old brigades to concentrate on mapping out formidable strategies that would give them victory in 2023 rather than chasing the shadow.
