A social media influencer, Deji Adeyanju, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify candidates who visit churches or mosques for support ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Adeyanju in a post on Tuesday said the Nigerian law forbids the use of religion or tribe to campaign.

He said: “2023: INEC should disqualify candidates that go to churches or mosques to campaign or solicit for support/votes. Our laws forbid the use of religion or tribe in the campaign.”

Earlier, Adeyanju had advised the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to start building structures instead of going to churches like someone seeking to become the CAN president.

On Tuesday morning, he mocked the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Funke Akindele, for being in a church service.

“Watching the video of Funke Akindele, PDP Deputy Guber candidate campaigning or sorry, worshipping in a Lagos church is hilarious. She almost went into a trance in the process. Politicians should keep their politics away from the church,” Adeyanju posted on Facebook.

Osimhen, Not Ronaldo Can Help Napoli Win Scudetto – Livio

Former Juventus midfielder Angelo di Livio believes Napoli has a big chance of winning the Serie A Title with Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen leading the attack than Cristiano Ronaldo.

There have been unending reports that Ronaldo wants to cut short his stay at Manchester United barely a year after he joined because the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.

According to Sports Witness, if Ronaldo moves to Napoli, Osimhen could also leave for Manchester United in a deal believed to be around €120-€130million.

However, the former Italy international also advised Napoli against signing Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo amid this week’s speculation.

He told Radio Due: “Napoli have great chances of winning the Scudetto, they had an excellent transfer campaign.

“I would think about selling Osimhen next year, I would keep him in Naples and I say no to Ronaldo because he has the chance to get to the title.”

Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party has implored Diaspora in Nigerians to play their roles in holding the Nigerian government accountable.

He said aside from the constitutional rights of voting, the people’s sacred role is also to hold elected government accountable for ensuring desired development.

This was made known on Tuesday by the former Anambra state governor via a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle.

He also said Nigeria needs visionary leadership and disruptive thinker to get it right.

He said, “It can only take one visionary leadership and disruptive thinker for Nigeria to be put back on the right trajectory. Our vision and mission is to give full expression to our democracy by moving our country from consumption to production.-PO.”

He also urged Nigerians overseas to exploit their network and numbers in demanding better government in their home country.

He said, “You have the network and numbers to be able to negotiate the priorities of the government, especially during the election period as the one we are embarking on soon.

“You should be able to place pressing issues on the agenda of the candidates and subsequently, on the front burners for the new government that will be formed.-PO.”

The LP presidential candidate added, “Besides voting, a citizen’s most coveted role is holding an elected government accountable. With your education, exposure and understanding of government responsibilities in your host country, and collective leverage, it is your duty to help hold your state and national government accountable back home.”

Obi explained that when elected, his administration will entrench good governance, promote rule of law and aggressively tackle insecurity.

“We will pursue intangible assets of good governance, rule of law, security of lives and properties, through an aggressive increase in personnel and equipment and inclusive training of operatives in our security agencies.

“We will emphasize patriotism, national interest, and national morale, quality of government, political will and character, which are all complimentary to the other assets. We will ensure that we have these assets in place and stress asset optimization. -PO”

The presidential candidate added, “In the New Nigeria we seek, we must think out of the box and at times, disruptively. As government and as Nigerians in Diaspora, we must henceforth contemplate those global best practices that will confer a comparative advantage on us, and replicate known successes that can move Nigeria from consumption to production.-PO

“No country thrives economically merely by exporting its raw materials and importing virtually everything. Such a disposition weakens our economic base and employment capabilities.-PO

“Nigeria can no longer afford to remain a consuming economy. While meeting local demands, she must transition into trading with manufactured and finished goods, and playing in the technology in the export market.- PO”

China Imposes COVID-19 Lockdown On Beijing

China Imposes COVID-19 Lockdown On Beijing

Millions of people in areas surrounding China’s capital were ordered into lockdown on Tuesday, with authorities doubling down on efforts to contain Covid-19 ahead of a key ruling Communist Party meeting this year.

Nearly four million people in Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing, were ordered to stay home until the end of the week as officials rush to curb a small virus flare-up.

And more than 13 million in the neighboring port city of Tianjin must undergo mass testing from 6 am (2200 GMT) after 51 mostly mild cases were reported.

China is the only major global economy sticking to a zero-Covid policy, and lockdowns, travel restrictions, and mass testing have disrupted businesses and cooled growth.

Beijing has doubled down on the policy ahead of the Communist Party’s 20th National Congress, expected to take place within the next three months.

The handling of the pandemic is widely seen as central to the political legacy of President Xi Jinping, who is set to be anointed for an unprecedented third term in office at the meeting.

But “the actual Covid situation in China might be worsening, as Omicron has once again spread to large cities”, Nomura analyst Ting Lu warned in a research note.

Chengdu, western China’s largest city, has also seen strict travel restrictions.

And in the southern tech hub of Shenzhen, two districts are under partial lockdown, while the world’s biggest electronics market in Huaqiangbei has closed — despite just 35 daily cases being reported in the city of over 18 million.

“The notice to close came abruptly, we only had a few hours to put our stock into warehouses and lock up,” a trader at the Huaqiangbei tech market, who only offered his last name Chen, told AFP.

In Futian, where the city government is located, cinemas, karaoke bars, and parks are closed until Friday and large public events have been canceled.

Officials also sealed off the Wanxia neighborhood on the city’s outskirts, which offers affordable housing for delivery drivers and migrant workers, although no cases were reported there.

We Have A Robust Mechanism To Respond To Issues Of Gender-based Violence In Abia, Says First Lady After Rescuing Woman Tortured For Being A ‘Witch’

0

Wife of the Governor of Abia state, Deaconess Nkechi IKpeazu, has said her office has put in place a robust mechanism to respond to issues of gender-based violence irrespective of how serious it is.

The Governor’s wife stated this after rescuing a widow identified as Mrs Amarachi Okechi, who has been under torture over alleged witchcraft by the youths of Umueghu Amaegbuato community, Nkpa in Bende council area of the state.

A member of Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu had told ABN TV that Amarachi was accused of being a witch who caused the death of her husband. Her relatives allegedly reported her to the youths of the community who arrested, tortured and held her hostage for several days until words got to some government officials in the area who alerted the wife of the governor.

Despite her plea of innocence, the youths tied her hands to the back, tied her legs and flogged her. Some of them were filming her.

“The matter is that she was accused of being a witch and having a hand in the death of her husband. The youths abducted her, but she pleaded her innocence. All her appeals fell on deaf ears as the youths tied her hands to the back, tied her legs and flogged her in the public square. Some of them were filming her. She had injuries on her head, hands and back. Some people intervened to rescue her, but the youths also attacked them,” a source said.

However, Chief Press Secretary to the wife of the Governor, Mr. Chika Ojiegbe , stated that the widow has been rescued and taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

“When the First Lady Nkechi Ikpeazu heard about it last night, she immediately swung into action to rescue the widow. In Abia, we have a robust mechanism for responding to cases of gender-based violence put in place by the First Lady. No matter how severe a case is, it is treated individually according to its circumstances. Several stakeholders were involved in securing the widow alive which is the first action that needed to be taken.

“This has been done. Now the next stage will be to address the issues surrounding the matter. The law enforcement agencies have been duly notified and have commenced appropriate investigations.”

“The allegations of witchcraft are strange to the laws of the land. What is known to law is that no one can take laws into their hands to execute jungle justice. The law will take its course. The case will be closely monitored. The First Lady is picking up the hospital bills of the widow as treatment has commenced in earnest at the hospital. The GBV Resource Centre in Umuahia who were part of the rescue is also monitoring her health.”

The Abia First lady also commended some stakeholders from the Bende council area for their roles in the matter.
