The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a serial rapist, who is notorious for molesting and robbing victims, in Abakaliki, the state capital.

The suspect, a 19-year-old, whose name was given as Miracle Onwe, is a native of Ezzamgbo in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated this during a briefing at the C Division of the police command, on Friday.

Anyanwu said the suspect was arrested after his latest victim raised the alarm after having had carnal knowledge of her in the farmland.

He said, “On 19/08/2022 at about 1700hrs, Ruth Nwizi, a 22 year old girl was farming at Aboffia village in Ebonyi LGA, Ebonyi State, when suddenly a young man came from the rear and pounced on her.

“The suspect later identified as Miracle Onwe, aged 19, an indigene of Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu LGA, pushed the said Ruth down and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without her consent,” Mr Anyawu said.

He further said after the act, the suspect robbed her of her Infinix Smart 5 phone valued at #45,000 and took to his heels.

He added, “When the girl raised the alarm and drew the attention of passers-by who went after him, the suspect dived into a nearby river with the phone.

“The DPO C Division Ekumenyi, SP Mustapha Waheed, on getting the information, swung into action with his detectives, cordoned off the area leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“He confessed to the crime. Both victim and suspect were taken to FETHA for post-exposure prophylaxis and laboratory tests respectively. A medical report duly issued by FETHA confirmed that the girl was actually raped.”

According to him, the suspect will be arraigned for rape and robbery at the appropriate Court in Ebonyi State.

He equally observed that the suspect was in the habit of molesting young girls in the area in the past.

“It is pertinent to mention at this juncture that the suspect had earlier this year attempted to rape a minor whom he forcefully grabbed in the company of two of her mates.

“However, as soon as he stripped the little girl in a bid to defile her, people who were within the vicinity pursued him and he dived into this same river. This has been his modus operandi.”

The suspect confessed to raping the victim and attempting to rape a minor, earlier in the year.

The victim, Miss Ruth, who narrated her ordeal, demanded that justice be done in the matter.

I Masterminded My Husband’s Abduction Because He Denied Me $ex, Money, Akwa Ibom Woman Confesses

Police Rescue Man Locked Up For 20 years In Kaduna

A 40-year-old woman, Mrs Joy Sunday, who was arrested by the Akwa Ibom Police Command for conspiracy over the kidnap of her husband, on Friday, opened up on why she masterminded her partner’s abduction.

She said she involved herself in the act because her husband had starved her of sex and money for too long.

It was gathered that the kidnappers demanded N10m as ransom and later reduced it to N2m which was paid before the police arrested them at the point of sharing the loot.

The suspect, who was among 29 others paraded for various offences including kidnapping, robbery and child theft by the State Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, said she had been subjected to doing all sorts of manual jobs to fend for herself and the children since her husband got married to another woman.

She added that when one of her children finished secondary education, there was no money to send him for further studies.

She said, “I arranged for my husband’s kidnapping because, for a long time, he had abandoned me with his children. Even when my father and mother inlaws were alive he abandoned me. He never cared for his children. I engaged in menial jobs such as weeding on people’s farms to feed my children and pay their school fees.

“One of the children finished from secondary school and I approached my husband to plan how to send the son to learn trade since the father refused to send him to university but my husband shunned me. The major reason i arranged for his kidnapping is that my husband refused to have sex with me and does not take care of me and the children.”

She disclosed that she never collected her share of the money before they were arrested by the police.

“The kidnapper that collected the ransom of N2million never gave my share and I don’t even see the money. It was when the kidnappers were sharing the N2m that the police arrested them and they mentioned me. They never gave me any part of the ransom collected from my husband.

“The kidnap kingpin (now at large) identified as Udo Moji assured me that he would collect the money from my husband for me since my husband attacked me and poured soup on me. So, I agreed with him and he kidnapped my husband. I ran around to gather money to pay the kidnappers. The main suspect, Udo moji ran away.

Narrating his ordeal, the husband of the suspect, Mr. Emmanuel Sampson Ebong, who hailed from Ntak Obio Akpa in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state said, “I was kidnapped on July 21, 2022 in my compound.

“I came back from where I went for treatment because I was weak. Around 8.30pm, I saw about six people in my compound. They struggled with me and fired two gunshots into the air, I struggled with them before they took me out of my compound in a minibus and drove away.

He added, “They kept me from that Thursday till Sunday and demanded N10m from me and later reduced it to N2m before the police came that day, If not for God, they would have killed me.

“They took me to Etinan where they kept me. I thank the Nigeria Police for the rescue operations. I also thank my Village Head. I don’t know the reason they kidnapped me, they collected N2m from me. The police later recovered over N500,000 from them.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of police, Olatoye Durosinmi, while parading the suspects vowed that his command would not leave any stone unturned to ensure that residents of the state sleep with their eyes closed.

He said, “I never in all my outings and utterances mentioned Peter Obi.

“Peter Obi is my friend, I’m going to host him in Ebonyi State and I will host him publicly,

“I like what he’s doing, and it’s very encouraging.”

The Ebonyi State governor was quoted in the past to have said Peter Obi would not get any vote in the state.

He has now denied making such comments and accused the Peoples’s Democratic Party. PDP, in his state of orchestrating such narrative.

He also noted during the interview that the Igbos lost out massively in the All Progressives Congress and the PDP during the presidential primaries.

PDP Suspends Dotun Babayemi Over Anti-Party Activities

Dotun Babayemi, a Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Osun State, has been suspended by the party’s Osun State chapter.

Babayemi was suspended in his ward, Ayedaade Local Government, Gbongan’s Otun Balogun Ward 2.

Babayemi is currently fighting for justice in the dispute over who the legitimate party candidate for governor of the state is.

He emerged as the candidate for a parallel governorship primary of PDP, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) identified Senator Ademola Adeleke, who emerged as governor-elect, as a candidate of the party.

However, Babayemi was expelled from the PDP for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities.

The Ward Executive members of Otun Balogun 2 made the pronouncement during a press briefing at the state party secretariat in Osogbo on Friday.

Reading the address on behalf of the Ward EXCO, the Secretary of the Ward, Ogunleye Bukayo, said the factional governorship candidate was expelled as a result of a petition filed against him by some party members.

“The Ward Executive Committee of the party at its meeting of 20th July, 2022, received the report of the disciplinary committee, and after careful and extensive deliberations ratified the report of the disciplinary committee.

“The Ward Executive Committee of the Party in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sections 57(2) and 59 (1) (g) of the constitution of PDP hereby remove and expel Prince Dotun Babayemi from the Peoples Democratic Party. He, therefore, ceases to be a member of the PDP henceforth,” Ogunleye said.

Dave Umahi

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has said that his failure to emerge as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential primary election is the will of God.

Umahi is one of the APC presidential aspirants who strived to get the presidential ticket but the National Leader of the party, Bola Tinubu emerged as the standard bearer on June 7 and 8 at Eagle Square, Abuja.

The governor said that he would not disclose some things until the campaign begins on September 28, adding that he swore an oath of allegiance to his party and he would abide by it.

Umahi said this during an interview with Arise Television on Friday morning.

“What happened to me at the APC primary election is the will of God. I swore an oath of allegiance to my party in APC and won’t say some things because the campaign has not started,” Umahi said.

The governor was asked why he is not supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi who is a Nigerian of Igbo extraction, despite his (Umahi) agitation for the Igbo presidency.

Umahi said, “No comment. I have answered your question and I answered you that when campaigns start we will be answering questions like this because as a man who wants to uphold the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I should just do that which is very important.”

Speaking further on Igbo Presidency, the APC presidential aspirant said, “There is no doubt that Igbo missed out so much in APC, but they missed out terribly in PDP. I have said this several times if Igbo would serve APC with the number of years they had served PDP and denied ticket, I will not be happy about that.

“Morally I don’t have any anger in me to say that it must be me (that would emerge the first Igbo president). No. I just did my bit and demonstrated that we have materials. And for me, in terms of who becomes the President of Nigeria, I want to suggest that we should talk on issues.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that Russia had done its utmost to prevent the forceful scenario in the Ukrainian crisis.

“For many years we kept saying we were doing everything to prevent the situation [in Ukraine] from sliding down, from degradation, and then to avoid a forceful scenario,” she said, while speaking at the Znaniye (Knowledge) educational marathon on Friday.

Zakharova believes that the Minsk agreements were a chance for Kiev, but the Ukrainian authorities from the outset had no intention to implement this plan. “[National Security and Defense Council Secretary Alexey Danilov] earlier this week made a statement that the Kiev regime had never had any plans to implement the Minsk agreements,” Zakharova said.

CHAN 2023 Qualifier: Yusuf Confident Home Eagles Will Turn The Table Against Ghana

Home-based Super Eagles head coach Salisu Yusuf is confident his team will secure a place at the 2023 Africa Nations Championship in Algeria.

The Home Eagles lost 2-0 to the Black Galaxies of Ghana in the first leg of their final qualifiying round fixture last weekend.

Both teams will clash in the reverse fixture on Saturday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

The Eagles will need to score three unreplied goals without conceding to overcome the Ghanaians.
“What is past is past and that is the case with the match we played in Ghana. Now we are looking forward to a good match on Saturday,” Yusuf stated.

“We are doing all we need to do to achieve our utmost desire to be in Algeria next year. There may have been one or two lapses that caught us on the bad end in Cape Coast but we can’t continue to dwell on that. We want to achieve a good result on Saturday.”

Yusuf, who is on a very familiar terrain, says that the team that will go out on Saturday may not be radically different from the line-up he featured in the first leg.

“It is going to be more like 88 to 90 percent of the team we presented in Ghana last Sunday. Remember that Sadiq Abubakar was injured in a moment we thought should have produced a penalty kick for us. He has not recovered fully and so may not feature.”
