Police Nab “One Chance” Robbers In Abuja

0

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested a four-man suspected “one-chance” criminal syndicate in the Wuye area of the FCT.

The team equally rescued from the suspects a victim and recovered a cash sum of N200,000 on the spot.

The suspected criminals – Monday James, Ubeh Peter, both male, Precious Ofili, and Rita Nkemjika, both female, – have been linked to masterminding and perpetrating a series of vehicular robberies (one chance) and it’s related fraudulently crimes popularly known as 419, particularly in the Wuye axis and environs, have been on the Police watchlist for some time.

In a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Commissioner, Babaji Sunday was quoted as saying: “Investigation revealed that on the said date and about 11:30 am, an unsuspecting innocent resident, unfortunately, walked into their sneer. The suspects having perfectly executed their criminal enterprise forcefully pushed the female victim out of a fast-moving car and sped off.

“The surveillance team of the Wuye division, who were on routine patrol, with the help of residents rushed to her aid and gave the fleeing criminals a hot chase. The hot chase soon attracted the attention of mobs who spread the news of the arrest gathering in their numbers to unleash mayhem on the Suspects. The Police, however, tactically effected the arrest of the suspects but the pressure from the irate crowd resulted in the burning of the operational vehicle of the suspects before the Police could move it down to the station.

“In the light of the above, preliminary investigation has commenced. The suspects have revealed to the Police their modus operandi and how they have been in the criminal venture for over five years.

“Furthermore, to ensure that members of the public are aware of the existence and activities of these criminal elements, it is important to expose their age-long modus operandi as follows; An unsuspecting passenger is first picked along the road. The passenger is then physically evaluated to see if valuables could be collected, otherwise, they harsh a plan B to play on the greed and innocence of the victim by saying a huge amount of money is in the boot and needs spiritual intervention for cleansing. The suspect is promised part of the money only if he or she can provide enough money to secure the services of a spiritualist. To believe this is falling victim to the miscreants,” he stated.

Babaji while reiterating the need for road users to board vehicles only at un-isolated and approved motor parks, noted that the anti-one-chance-unit of the command and other similar sections across the Command have been beefed up to ensure that the menace and sundry crimes and criminality are nipped in the bud.

He also stressed the need for members of the public to shun the practice of self-help in obtaining justice known as jungle justice. He assured that the suspects will be made to face the full wrath of the law on the conclusion of the investigations.

0

THE National Association of Nigerian Students,NANS,on Saturday, elected Comrade Umar Faruk Lawal, from Bayero University,Kano,as its new president.

Lawal takes over from Sunday Asefon, whose tenure has come to an end.

He was declared as winner of the unions’s election held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja

The new NANS president, speaking at a press conference after his victory, vowed to make students issues his priorities.

Expressing concern over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,Lawal disclosed that his leadership would soon engage both the federal government through the Minister of Education and the leadership of ASUU with a view to ending the strike so that students can return to their schools.

NANS,he said, would no longer indulge in partisan politics just as he said the new NANS under his watch would collaborate with security agencies to brainstorm and proffer workable templates for the security of lives and properties in our beloved nation.

He thanked all Nigerian students who supported him in the past one week to ensure his victory, vowing never to let Nigerian students down.

“I want to use this opportunity to let the public know that we have a new NANS. I am the newly elected president of NANS.

“I want to use this privilege to appreciate all Nigerian students that supported me for the past one week, for deeming it fit to stay in Abuja to make sure that they elect a new leadership under my watch. Indeed,I appreciate all Nigerian students, leaders and my convention leaders here that pasis through these processes to elect me as NANS president.

“It’s a new dawn for NANS as students will go back to campus. We will not allow anybody to sell our organisation for anything. I urge all Nigerian students to have hope in this my leadership, that very soon,we will meet with the leadership of ASUU and the federal government to see that Nigerian students go back to their campuses.

“The Minister of Education,we are by this informing you that NANS has a new leadership and that very soon,we will come for a meeting with you and the leadership of ASUU,so that students go return to schools,”he said.

In a statement he further released, the new NANS president, allegef that ” there were some destructive elements that tried to shortchange the general will of Nigerian students during the process of the just concluded convention.”

The statement read, “I will start by expressing my profound gratitude to Allah, who has been with us throughout this turbulent journey. I sincerely appreciate the esteemed Senators of our dear organization; NANS who have stood on the path of honour regardless of the hurdles.

“To the stakeholders who have upheld the true tenets of our founding fathers; Your efforts are well appreciated. To my co-contestants, we have all given a good fight and agree that it is the time to forge ahead. My election as President of our beloved organization; the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), marks the beginning of a new era of struggle, this is indeed a REVIVIFICATION AGENDA as we are set to revive the lost glory of our organization. It is high time we rejigged the dreams of our founding fathers for a better education system in Nigeria.

“Although there were some destructive elements that tried to shortchange the general will of Nigerian students during the process of the just concluded convention, they formed oppression and tried to buy the students’ mandate, they orchestrated different vicious plans that were inimical to the existence of our organization, but with the support of genuine students and NANS Senators, light conquered the darkness. Our victory is blossoming, and it comes with great glory.

“Let me take you a bit down a historical lane. The struggle for emancipation of Nigerian students started with the creation of the West African Students Union (WASU) under our erudite ancestor, Ladipo Solanke, in 1925. The establishment of University College Ibadan in 1945 begot a new era of struggle as the National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS) replaced WASU.“It is disheartening to see university students at home for the past 6 months. The fact that the leadership of ASUU and the Federal government have held a series of meetings without a fruitful outcome is heartbreaking, NANS, under my leadership, is ready to be the genuine voice of the Students in this negotiation as we demand an immediate end to the prolonged industrial actions, Failure to have resolution within the shortest period available will be faced with decisive action from Nigerian Students.”

The Police in Ogun State have arrested three of suspected cultists and serial killers terrorising Ijebu Ode and its environs.

The suspects, Odukoya Odushina, Subomi Popoola and Itunuoluwa Taiwo, were linked to several cult killings in the area.

The Police Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Saturday identified them as the leading members of the dreaded Eiye confraternity who have been terrorising Ijebu Ode.

He said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off received at the Obalende Police divisional headquarters Ijebu Ode, on activities of the suspect.

Oyeyemi explained that the police were informed that members of the gang were “holding nocturnal meeting at a black spot known as Sanga at the back of Central Mosque, with the plan to unleash terror on members of the community.”

He said operatives of the command, from Obalende division, immediately stormed the black spot.

“On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums attacked them with dangerous weapons, but they were subdued and the ring leader Odukoya Odushina a.k.a Odus who is the no 1 eiye confraternity, Subomi Popoola a.k.a Oyan and Itunuoluwa Taiwo were apprehended.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested suspects were not only into cultism, they were into armed robbery as well,” he said.

He explained further the command discovered that the first suspect had been arrested and charged to court, but was granted bail.

Oyeyemi said three days after the bail, “he (Odushina) went with his gang to rob at Ayegbami area of ijebu Ode where he killed one man simply known as Baba Njo.”

He said some of items such as jewellery, phones and suspected hard drugs were recovered from them.

Abia PDP Carpets Atiku’s Loyalist For Comment On Ikpeazu’s Relationship With Wike

Governor Wike To Storm Abia State For Project Commissioning

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State, has carpeted Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, who is an ally of the president candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over his comment against Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s relationship with his Rivers state counterpart, Nyesom Wike.

Ogbonnaya, who is Atiku’s campaign director in Abia State and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state ,had urged Ikpeazu to stop following Wike and tackle the infrastructural deficit confronting his state.

However, in a statement by the Acting Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Elder Amah Abraham, the party said Ogbonnaya has become a social media activist who has been attacking the Governor in the last two years because he lost favor of the state government.

The party noted that Ikpeazu has performed better than his predecessors in the provision of infrastructural facilities in the state.

“Nothing can be more condescending for a man like Charles Ogbonnaya who has reached such a lofty height in politics and should know the internal workings of government and the rudiments of political communications to ebb to the lowest level possible and turn a non-issue into a political big-fight for the sake of selfish personal interest.

“For a man like Chief Charles Ogbonnaya who served as a high-level Commissioner under Governor Ikpeazu and has unfettered and unimpeded access to the governor to take to the public space to advise the Governor is a clear proof that the advice is not ordinary but fully laden with bad political intent.

“During the time Charles Ogbonna served in this government, at no point did the issue of Abia’s infrastructural decay take center stage in his engagements with the governor; privately or publicly, but suddenly and very explainable, has in the past two years, become a social media activist whose stock in trade is attacking the governor and his government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Charles Ogbonnaya and those in cahoots with him should understand that Abians are not unaware of the undercurrents that propel such ill-informed outbursts that are intended to embarrass the government. In due course, Abians who we are sure know the subterranean influences would be told the full story of Charles Ogbonnaya and his ilks.”

The party described Ikpeazu as a leading light in the party and a forceful voice in the Southern Governors Forum, SGF, as well as the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, who is well positioned to stand in the gap for the South East and his state as far as permutations for 2023 and beyond, are concerned.

“Governor Ikpeazu’s high-level involvement in the 2023 struggle has become imperative given the rising tide of extraneous forces that seek to push aside the PDP at the national level. For one thing Alhaji Atiku Abubakar holds Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in high esteem and sees him as one, if not the only person that can moderate as well as modulate the Nyesom Wike influence which is threatening to undo the PDP.

“For the records, the political romance between Governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Nyesom Wike is based on mutual respect and of equal value and significance as colleague-governors. While Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu was at the commissioning of some projects in Rivers State last week as duly invited by his colleague, same gesture has also been extended to Governor Wike to be part of the commissioning of some flagship projects in Abia State next Monday to mark the closure of celebrations for the 31st anniversary of the creation of Abia State.

“Charles Ogbonnaya should understand that Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu has more stake in the PDP than he does and will not descend to the level of exchanging words on the pages of social media with him.

No Targeted Attacks On Nigerians In Kenya — High Commission

12 Trapped As Gold Mine Collapses In Kenya

The Nigeria High Commission in Kenya has refuted an online media report alleging the targeting and killing of Nigerians in the East African country.

In a statement issued in Nairobi on Saturday, a copy of which was received by the News Agency of Nigeria, the Commission described the story as a concoction replete with falsehood.

It urged the public to refrain from interfacing with faceless groups or individuals who invest shamelessly in propagating irritants injurious to the cordial diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Kenya.

It also urged Nigerians in Kenya to go about their activities within the provisions of the laws of the host country.

The High Commission added that it remained resolute in executing its responsibilities and functions with every sense of professionalism and patriotism to Nigeria and to Nigerians.

“A parody news item released by an online platform on Aug. 31 and captioned `Nigerians in Kenya have raised alarm over targeted killings…is a concoction replete with falsehood and unfounded allegations.

“The Nigerian High Commission in Kenya is not irked by the falsehood and frivolous allegations and will continue to conduct its statutory obligations on behalf of Nigeria and Nigerians in Kenya.

“The High Commission, in line with statutory obligations, is devoted to the proper treatment of Nigerian nationals in Kenya and acts expeditiously on their behalf.

“Contrary to claims of extrajudicial killings of Nigerians in Kenya by police operatives, there is no such incident. Rather, Nigerians have been supported where necessary to engage the host authorities in line with local laws,’’ it stated.

The High Commission stated also that a syndicate of bad elements was out to tarnish its image.

“The High Commission is aware of a syndicate which desires to tarnish its purposeful engagements and successes.

“Members of the syndicate, who have been beneficiaries of the service excellence of the High Commission, have consistently failed in their efforts to riot and unleash mayhem on the High Commission and its personnel.

“Their schemes include phony online videos, unsubstantiated petitions and threats to officials of the Mission, and campaigns to close the High Commission and create a diplomatic row with the host government.

“The issue of concern in the parody news publication is the abduction of a Nigerian national on July 26 July.

“This is a sensitive subject of on-going engagement between the Nigeria High Commission and the Kenyan authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, is also regularly updated on the matter,’’ it added.

It stated also that as part of measures taken to ascertain the whereabouts of the Nigerian national, the High Commission made publications in the print and electronic media in Kenya.

“The case is still being investigated and officials of the High Commission have sustained the requisite engagement with the host authorities and continue to do so.

“It is shameful that some devious elements have sought to garner favour through the misfortune of others,’’ it stressed.
