NSCDC Officials Leave Woman Partially Blind After Brutal Attack In Plateau

A yet-to-be-identified personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC on Friday assaulted a shop owner, Mrs. Joy Owolabi at the Nanmwa Junction, Abattoir area, Jos South local government area of Plateau State, leading to serious injuries on her eyes and other parts of her body.

The incident happened a few meters away from the office of the organisation, although the victim had reported the incident, the organisation is yet to apprehend the personnel and his accomplice who assaulted her.

Before the Friday incident, it was gathered that sometime last month, the said personnel (whom Mrs. Owolabi could identify facially as she does not know his name,) came to the betting shop next to the victim’s shop and parked his official motorcycle in front of Mrs Owolabi’s shop, blocking her entrance and she called his attention to re-park the motorcycle but she was ignored and an argument ensued.

On that Friday, the personnel returned to the betting shop with his colleague and parked his motorcycle in the similar manner that the woman complained about. The incident led to an exchange of words between him and the shop owner.

Instead of parking his motorcycle properly, the victim and some eyewitnesses confirmed, he punched the victim, pushed her to the ground and started flogging her with a wire as neighbours and passersby watch helplessly. None could rescue the woman as the assaulter and his colleague were armed.

Narrating her ordeal, Mrs. Owolabi said, “I was in my shop on the 2nd of September, 2022, at about noon, I saw two men in uniform, they were from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, they rode into my shop. One stood by the roadside and the second one came to the entrance of my shop.

“They came with an official motorcycle, when the man parked, blocking the entrance of my shop, I went and met him and said please, help me re-park this motorcycle because the way you parked, I cannot enter the shop.

“My neighbour who is the Naijabet Manager also came out and saw the way the man parked the motorcycle; he started pleading with the man to re-park it. As we were talking, the man punched me in my left eye and I fell to the ground.

“As I was trying to stand up, he punched me in the second eye. He removed the wire and started flogging me. They came in armed so people were afraid of coming to my rescue and when this thing was going on, people were just watching.

“After flogging me, the two of them left with the motorcycle. When they left, I locked my shop and went to their office which is not far from my shop to report.”

Another shop owner who did not want to be mentioned added, “This is somebody’s wife that this boy beat like an animal because he is wearing a uniform. We were scared of going close for fear of being shot. It appears that the boy is on something, apart from getting justice for the woman, he should be fished out and punished to save the woman in his life. It could be that is the manner he is flogging them at home.”

He appealed that the NSCDC should not sweep the incident under the carpet in the guise of not being able to identify the culprit, saying, “the owner of the shop that he used to enter can help to identify him.”

At the time of this report, the victim was still receiving treatment at a hospital in Jos as she is feeling severe pains all over her body.

It was also gathered that the victim was asked to return on Monday as all personnel on a motorcycle would be presented for her to “identify” who assaulted her.

However, the State NSCDC Public Relations Officer, DSC Madaki Longbit said he was not aware of the incident but would find out on Monday.

His words, “I was not informed, Friday was a busy day for us and I was not at the Command but give me till Monday to confirm, I will get back to you.”

Under My Husband, Nigeria’ll Recover — Atiku’s Wife

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has promised to give 40 per cent of his cabinet positions to women and youths if elected in the 2023 elections.

While emphasising the importance of women and youths in national development, he raised concern over the high cost of living in Nigeria, blaming it on the failure of the Federal Government of the All Progressives Congress to effectively manage the nation’s economy.

Atiku, represented by a former chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory and Spokesperson of his campaign organisation, Dino Melaye, expressed the view during the inauguration of the Atiku-Okowa Vanguard Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.

At the event, the wife of the presidential candidate, Titi Abubakar, appealed to Nigerian women and youths for support, saying that her husband was well prepared to rescue the nation and bring it back to working ways.

“If my husband is elected, I will do more for Nigerian children and women. Atiku has promised women and youths 40 per cent in the cabinet, he is a man of his word and he will do it but it is you alone that can make it happen.

“I am appealing to you, our women and youths, don’t sell your conscience and your tomorrow but rather, stand for the right thing and your tomorrow will be better because Atiku will bring back Nigeria’s lost glory,” she stated.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including wife of a former Senate President, Mrs Helen Mark, and Director of Support Groups Atiku Campaign Organisation, Hon. Fabiyi Oladimeji.

“Without women and youths, there is no nation and part of my policy direction is to populate my appointments and empowerments by youths and women minimum 40 per cent.

“While women are asking for 35 per cent, Atiku is offering 40 per cent and let me assure you that this will be implemented to the later when we come on board.

“I used to fly economy from Abuja to Lagos for N18,000 but now over N100,000, we used to buy loaf of bread for N120 and now N1200, we used to buy Diesel at N150 per litre but now it is N800 per litre, dollar used to be exchanged for N210 and now N700 and rising.

“We cannot continue like this as a nation; so let us save Nigeria by electing Atiku Abubakar. You know no Nigerian can accuse Atiku of being a tribalist or a religious bigot.

“Nigeria is looking for a healer not a patient; so let us go house-to-house, door-to-door and campaign for Atiku and Okowa to rescue this country.

“Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and others are prepared to be President but Atiku Abubakar is adequately prepared for the task of rescuing, uniting and rebuilding the nation.

“Obi is an upcoming President, his future is bright and age is on his side but we need a father figure who can unite the country,” Melaye said.

The chairman of the occasion and former Senate President, Senator Anyim Anyim, represented by Ebonyi State PDP governorship vandidate, Obinna Ogba, said political awareness had escalated with the advent of the social media.

Anyim commended the Atiku-Okowa Vanguard Nigeria for their efforts at marketing the party.

According to him, PDP had the best presidential candidate in the country and urged the group to intensify efforts at marketing Atiku to Nigerians.

The keynote Speaker at the event and National Secretary of PDP Samuel Anyanwu, said, “The attendance here today is a clear testimony that our presidential candidate is very popular and accepted by majority of Nigerians.

“Nigerians are looking up to the PDP for immediate rescue from the lacklustre leadership of the All Progressives Congress.

“This group is therefore a welcoming effort in our quest to rescue and rebuild Nigeria from the maladministration of the APC.

“The country is in a paralytic condition awaiting immediate rescue because every facet of the economy has become dysfunctional and putting the country under imminent collapse.

“Today, very few Nigerians can afford three square meals with unprecedented unemployment and poverty level earning the country the poverty capital of the world.

“No nation can survive the present circumstance of insecurity, banditry and terrorism, therefore the Atiku-Okowa Vanguard must embark on a strong mass mobilisation effort if we desire that our country must change,” Anyanwu stated.

Welcoming guests earlier, National President of the group, Hon. Oby Nwaogu said the group first debuted in 2018 and revalidated in 2022 to educate and inform Nigerians on the sterling leadership qualities of Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

She described Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as detribalised Nigerians, and very experienced leaders Nigerians needed to rescue the nation from the hardship and underdevelopment brought on the people by the APC.

He’s there with the right message. He remains the only candidate who is not just prepared but very prepared. Atiku’s government, if elected, will halt the rate of debt accumulation and instead focus on private-public partnerships in financing development, form a government of national unity that will douse the temperature, unite Nigerians and pave the way for improved security.

Improved security allows for investments and, therefore, an improved economy. Also targeted tax rebates to attract foreign and local investments, amongst other proactive measures to attract investments to grow the economy.”

The Labour Party, LP, has dismissed news making the rounds that it’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, was abroad to solicit foreign funding for his campaigns.

National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Oluwafemi, gave this clarification in a telephone interview with Vanguard, on Saturday.

He described the speculations that the party was equally seeking foreign funding for its activities as part of the antics of political opponents, who were intimidated by the rising profile of the Labour Party and its presidential candidate.

Oluwafemi said: “It is ridiculous that our political opponents have descended to a new low to insinuate that our party is oblivious of electoral laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, neither our party nor our candidate is seeking for foriegn funding for any of our activities.

“Our candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, is hitting the ground running.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has wondered why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) still exists.

Tinubu stated this during the unveiling of the Tinubu/Shettima door-to-door campaign group in Abuja on Saturday.

The former Governor of Lagos also described the PDP as a party that lacks direction.

“They spent 16 years and forgot that there is a railway infrastructure that can do haulage, human carriage, animal husbandry and food carriage across the length and breadth of the country.

“They (PDP) got there and turned it into an incubator. I wonder why they still exist as a party. These are people still fighting for leadership of their party, looking for the direction of the compass.

“We don’t need to worry about the PDP — poverty development party. Today, let’s lower the temperature. It’s not the time to campaign yet. They will hear a lot from us,” Tinubu said.

Abia 2023: APC Guber Candidate, Ikechi Emenike Has No Electoral Value - Ex-Reps Member
High Chief Ikechi Emenike

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, APC and ex-member of the House of Representatives from Abia State, Chief Nze Chiekwe Esiaga has insisted that Chief Ikechi Emenike cannot lead the party to victory in 2023.

He posited that the factional gubernatorial candidate lacked the needed capacity to lead the APC to wrest power from the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 coming governorship elections in the State.

He cautioned the leadership of the party against fielding Emenike as the authentic governorship standard-bearer of the party for the forthcoming elections.

He further claimed that Emenike’s emergence was against the electoral guidelines reeled out for the conduct of the primaries.

Nze Esiaga spoke to journalists in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on Thursday.

ABN TV reports that the APC conducted parallel gubernatorial primaries on the 26th day of May, 2022 in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, wherein two governorship candidates emerged.

The candidates are the immediate past Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Sampson Ogah, and the former Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Board, University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, Ikechi Emenike.

Both candidates are already in court seeking judicial interpretation on the authenticity of the conducted exercise.

Continuing, Esiaga, however, reiterated that Emenike does not have the electoral value and cannot secure a win for the party in the coming elections.

He further dismissed the purported constitution of the Abia APC reconciliation committee, which was recently inaugurated by party leadership to address the internal crisis rocking the State chapter of the party.

The ex-federal lawmaker also accused the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma of aiding Ikechi Emenike to destroy the laudable strides made by the party in Abia State since its formation, calling on the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee of the party to call the governor to order.

His words, “Abia APC Integrity Group led by our 2019 Governorship candidate and the immediate past minister of State for mines and steel Development, Dr Uche Sampson Ogah, is strongly opposed to the obnoxious arrangements whereby Chief Ikechi Emenike is the owner of the State Structure of the party and he is also the Governorship candidate.

“He singlehandedly chose the National Welfare Secretary of APC that was allocated to Abia State and he chose all candidates for the forthcoming elections. He, in conjunction with Governor Hope Uzodinma, compelled all the national delegates to vote for Senator Ahmed Lawan.

“Those who made it impossible for Abia delegates to vote for Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu should not serve in the campaign council and should not be allowed to nominate committee members for they have their hidden agenda.

“Take it from me for the umpteenth time, Chief Ikechi Emenike does not have the electoral value that will ensure his victory in the 2023 election, and I stand to be quoted. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State should be called to order on his ambition of annexing Abia to his State as Abians will henceforth not entertain any further interference on our matters by him”.

Speaking at the event, Brigadier General Adetuyi expressed gratitude for the invitation of the community, saying the presence of army in the community is not to oppress or intimidate the locals but to offer them and the generality of Abians and Nigerians service.

While urging the traditional rulers, community leaders, parents, and guardians to encourage their children, wards, and youths in the community to embrace peace, and security, the commander said officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army are committed to ensuring a harmonious relationship with their hosts.

“Sometimes when I go round this community on Mondays, I come to the market square, I feel very bad, why? Because the people are supposed to be making money, they are supposed to be engaging in their commercial activities, and trading.

“People are supposed to be going to their farms, the students are supposed to be in schools. Without all these, there cannot be development. If the students don’t go to school, how can they be educated? How can they attain a higher position in society, to be able to even speak for the community?

“If they don’t engage in economic activities, how can they support the growth of the community, we cannot continue to support criminality and expect development,” he said.

While attesting to the peace-loving nature of the community, he urged for the support of the people of Ebem Ohafia so that there will be peace, security, and development.

The people of the community traditionally welcomed the Commander and his men with the presentation of the yam.

Brigadier General Adetuyi in accepting the gift of the new yam appreciated it with the sum of N100,000.

2023: Tinubu Campaign Group Ask INEC To Disqualify Peter Obi Over Diaspora Fund Raising

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been asked to disqualify Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi over Diaspora funding for his campaign.

The call was made in a statement released on Saturday by the Tinubu-Shettima Connect, a campaign group for All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu.

In the statement signed by its convener, Adebanjo Moyosore, the group also threatened to take legal action against Obi to stop him from participating in the 2023 presidential election for allegedly engaging in activities that contravene the Electoral Act 2022.

LP chairman Julius Abure had on Thursday inaugurated an 11-man committee to drive the party’s Diaspora movement.

Abure, while inaugurating the committee in Abuja said that the move was to strengthen collaboration among people and galvanise support for the party ahead of 2023 general election.

He added that the committee would also recommend to the national chairman, the creation of Diaspora chapters and monitor their activities.

The LP chairman also said the committee would organise fund-raising for the party’s candidates.

The inauguration came a day after the party’s Diaspora support groups pledged to raise $150 million for Obi’s campaign.
