Spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 elections, Festus Keyamo, has said that he didn’t sue then-Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, over alleged certificate forgery.

“I never sued Tinubu. No. I sued the House of Assembly seeking an interpretation of the law,” Keyamo said in a statement sent to Channels Television on Tuesday.

The Minister of State, Labour and Employment was reacting to a statement by the the Spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, Daniel Bwala, who insisted that Keyamo sued Tinubu during his first-term as Lagos governor.

Bwala, who spoke on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, cited a law report, Keyamo V. House Of Assembly, Lagos State (2002)18 NWLR (Pt. 799)605.

However, Keyamo said, “Once the Supreme Court pronounces on an issue, it becomes binding on even the lawyer who loses and he is bound to obey and defend the judgment of the court. So assuming (which is not conceded) that I made any kind of accusation in the matter, once the Supreme Court ruled, that was the end of the matter and from that moment, it behoves me to stop pushing a matter already laid to rest by the highest court of the land and defend the decision.

“Nigerians would be hearing from the horse’s mouth as to what actually transpired during the battle that raged then and how the matter was eventually laid to rest,” he said, adding that he is “the greatest defender of Asiwaju on the issue today”.

Keyamo noted that “these battles we waged were not borne out of bitterness and hate” but to “unravel the truth and the real constitutional powers of the House”.

“So, once the issue was laid to rest, we move on. Anyone who thinks I would still harbour any kind of resentment more than 20 years later should examine his/her head,” he said.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Tuesday said the government could only afford 23.5 percent salary increase for lecturers, while a 35% increment will be enjoyed by professors.

The minister also noted that the President, warned against signing agreements which the government will not be able to meet.

Adamu disclosed this while speaking during the meeting with vice-chancellors and other stakeholders in the university system.

He said, ”The Federal Government can only afford a 23.5% salary increase for all category of the workforce in Federal Universities, except for the professorial cadre which will enjoy a 35% upward review.

“Henceforth, allowances that pertain to ad-hoc duties of the academic and non-academic staff shall be paid as at when due by the Governing Councils of Universities to which such services are rendered and to the staff who perform
them.

“That a sum of 150 billion Naira shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget as
funds for the revitalization of Federal Universities, to be disbursed to the
Institutions in the First Quarter of the year, and that a sum of 50 billion Naira shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget for the payment of outstanding areas of earned academic allowances, to be paid
in the First Quarter of the year”.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, the pro-chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Peter Okebukola, noted that the government was ready to go all out to ensure that the university lecturers return back to school.

Tourism should be outside politics but Russia’s withdrawal from the World Tourism Organization was a reasonable step, President Vladimir Putin said speaking at the meeting of State Tourism Council board on Tuesday.

“The priority is strengthening Russia’s position in tourism sector on the international arena. You know, we left the World Tourism Organization, this was a reasonable step. But we are convinced that tourism should be out of politics, and we understand what a huge role it plays in building partnership and mutual understanding between countries and peoples,” the head of state said.

He also asked the government to “study the topic of creating interstate tourism organizations.”

“We have enough partners. Many of them have motivation to work with Russia,” Putin said.

DStv/Gotv Tariff Hike: Tribunal Dismisses Case Against MultiChoice

The Competition and Consumer Protection, CCPC, Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a suit that was filed to challenge the recent price hike by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, the operator of DStv and Gotv.

The three-member panel tribunal headed by Mr. Thomas Okosun, in its judgment, dismissed the suit which was filed by a legal practitioner, Mr. Festus Onifade, on behalf of himself and the coalition of Nigerian consumers, as lacking in merit.

Whereas MultiChoice was sued as the 1st respondent in the matter, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, was cited as the 2nd respondent.

Onifade had approached the tribunal shortly after the company announced its plan to increase subscription tariffs on all its products, from April 1.

In an amended originating summons he filed on June 20, the lawyer, prayed the tribunal to issue an order, directing and mandating the cable service provider to adopt a pay-as-you-view model of billing for all its products and services in the country.

Aside from praying the tribunal to restrain MultiChoice from proceeding with its plan to increase subscription fees for its services and products pending the determination of the matter, the Claimants further demanded damages be awarded against the company to the tune of N10million.

Though the tribunal initially granted an ex-parte motion that directed the parties to maintain status quo ante Bellum, however, the company was alleged to have gone ahead with the price increase on DStv and Gotv subscriptions.

MultiChoice had through its lawyer, Mr. Jamiu Agoro, challenged the jurisdiction of the tribunal to entertain the case.

It urged the tribunal to set aside its interlocutory order, contending that the Claimants lacked the locus standi to institute the action.

Meanwhile, though the tribunal, in its judgment on Tuesday, held that it had the requisite jurisdiction to hear the suit, it however dismissed the matter for want of merit.

The tribunal held that the price increase was valid, adding that the Claimants failed to establish that MultiChoice abused its dominant position in the market.

More so, the panel held that neither the FCCP, the tribunal itself nor any other body has the power to regulate price.

“Only the President has the powers to regulate or fix prices of goods and services under stipulated circumstances which do not apply in this instance”, it held.

More so, the tribunal held that the Claimants failed to adduce any evidence or to establish how they suffered psychological trauma, hardship or how their rights were violated as a result of the price hike.

It held that the litigants were unable to show evidence of hardship suffered by the consumers of MultiChoice’s services and products.

The national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Samuel Anyanwu, has said that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has made “immense sacrifice for the sustenance of the party.”

Anyanwu, in a statement issued in Owerri, Imo state, on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Ikenna Onuoha, said he never made comments against Wike in regards to the crisis rocking the party.

The PDP national scribe said that the media report quoting him that he had distanced himself from the Rivers state governor was completely false, malicious, and an extreme act of wicked mischief by desperate power seekers.

The statement disclosed that Anyanwu had briefed his lawyers to commence legal action against the writer.

The statement partly read, “The attention of the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has been drawn to a fictitious report in some section of the social media, claiming that he granted a media chat during which he purportedly stated that he had distanced himself from Governor Nyesom Wike of River State.

“The said report is completely false, malicious and an extreme act of wicked mischief by desperate power seekers who seek to pitch Sen. Anyanwu against Governor Wike and cause disaffection in the PDP for their selfish gain.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Sen. Anyanwu did not grant any form of media interview, chat or interaction whatsoever at the Cathedral of Transfiguration of Our Lord Owerri before, during or after the celebration of the 80th Birthday Anniversary of a foremost nationalist, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

“As such, he could not have made any statement on Governor Wike as purported by the said report.

“It is, therefore, shocking that the writer of the fabricated report went to the extent of concocting fictitious quotations and ascribed same to Sen. Anyanwu just to give his libelous story a semblance of fact.

“For emphasis, Sen. Anyanwu is a highly cultured leader and had never made any undesirable comment on anybody let alone Governor Wike, a highly respected leader and critical stakeholder in the PDP.

“Sen. Anyanwu, as the National Secretary cannot, has not, and will never distance himself from any leader in the Party let alone Governor Wike, who remains a prominent leader of our party who has made immense sacrifice for the sustenance of the Party.

“In any event, our investigation has revealed where this reprehensible report emanated from. Information at our disposal showed that the writer, Chuks Egemba, was an appointee of the ill-fated seven month’s administration in Imo state.

“We are also aware of how huge sums of money has been released to hack writers to tarnish Sen. Anyanwu’s image and bring him to disrepute in the eyes of the public and among his political associates.

“Such individuals are fighting a lost battle as they cannot diminish Sen. Anyanwu’s soaring popularity in Imo State by means of lies, fabrication and fake news.

“The National Secretary has already instructed his lawyers to commence necessary action with security agencies for redress over this libelous report in line with our extant laws including those against dissemination of fake news.

“We urge the public, leaders and members of the PDP and the media to disregard the said report as completely false and product of the twisted imagination of a wicked soul and their sponsors.”

Minister Calls Attention To Poor Sanitation Facilities In IDP Camps

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk has called attention to the lack of improved sanitation facilities across many Nigerian cities.

She worried that as many as 47 million Nigerians still indulge in open defecation, polluting the environment as a result of sanitation facilities.

The minister said many studies have placed Nigeria at the top of the league of countries where open defecation is prevalent.

Farouk highlighted that 120 million Nigerians are forced to live with their waste as there are no facilities to hygienically separate such from human contact.

The minister, represented by the Director of Social Development in the ministry, Mr. Taiwo Ademola Bashorun spoke at Bakassi in Cross River State during an event at the internally displaced persons (IDPs camp.

She called for good toilets and environmental hygiene for the IDPs, insisting that they deserve to live healthy too.

She advised IDPs to shun open defecation so that they do not invite diseases which are associated with open defecation to the camp.

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every four Nigerians defecate openly. This has created a medium for potential transmission of the wild poliovirus, cholera and hepatitis among other infectious diseases because they have no access to adequate toilet facilities”, said the minister.

Also speaking, the Supervisor of Environment, Nkoyo Effiong, who spoke on effective hygiene also advised the IDPs not to discard baby pampers in open places but endeavour to drop them in toilets to avoid passers-by getting in contact with already used pampers which constitute an eye sore and capable of transmitting disease.

The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, on Tuesday said he had been in a dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil following the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

This was made known during the meeting with vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors of federal universities at the National Universities Commission in Abuja on Tuesday.

“For me, the past two weeks have been a very dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil. I used to deceive myself that in a climate of frankness, and with mutual goodwill, it will fall to my lot to bring an end to the incessant strikes in the education sector.

This has not proved possible, or, at least, not as easy, quickly and straightforward, as I used to think.

“Distinguished Chairmen, vice-chancellors, I called you today not to share with you my anguish but to share with you the details of what we have done and what remains to be done. And certainly, a lot remains to be done. But for very different reasons, the current positions of Government and ASUU on the future of negotiations seem to have coincided.

“For me, this is a position I would have wanted us to reach after an amicable resolution of all the issues contained in the 2009 Agreements. It appears that we are running ahead of the negotiations but not for the right reasons. The President of ASUU has been reported to have said the Union would no longer negotiate with the current Federal Government.

“This position must be resisted. Government and ASUU have no option than to continue talking until our universities have reopened their doors to students, who clearly are the principal victims of the seemingly unending strikes. In the circumstances, therefore, all Councils and Senates of our universities are enjoined to rise up to their responsibilities.

“We must, together, continue to work to restore our public universities to where they were in the 60s and 70s. As the most important officers in our university system, Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors, must demonstrate more commitment to ending the ongoing strike.

“As Chairmen of Councils and Senates – the highest policy and academic bodies in the system – you must consider it your paramount duty to promote policies and actions that will discourage industrial disputes in our campuses. Government will continue to support the physical and academic development of its universities.

Government will continue to reasonably enhance the working conditions of all university staff, academic and non-teaching.

“The main challenge, as you are fully aware, is dwindling resources available to address all the concerns of the citizenry. We thank you for your support, understanding and sacrifices.”

ASUU had embarked on a strike on Monday, February 14, 2022 following what the union tagged as failure of the government to meet lingering demands.
