Queen Elizabeth II Is Dead
Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II has died at 96, the palace confirms. The queen took the throne in 1953 at the age of 27. She was the second-longest serving sovereign in world history, and spent her life in the public eye.

For many in the U.K. and beyond, she served as a symbol of stability through the changes of the 20th and 21st centuries. Prince Charles, her eldest son and heir to the throne, immediately became king upon her death.

Reports of the queen’s health emerged on Wednesday, when she postponed a virtual meeting with Privy Council advisors on doctors’ advice to rest. On Thursday at 7:30 a.m. ET, the palace issued a statement that the queen’s doctors were “concerned” for her health, recommending she remain under medical supervision at Balmoral, the family estate in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II turned 96 this past April.

In June, the nation celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. She was the last woman in the line of succession for the coming generations. After Charles, next in line is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Charles’ son with Princess Diana. Following is Prince George, Prince William’s son with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

The monarch’s husband, Prince Philip, died at age 99 in 2021. They were married for over 73 years. Ahead, the latest live updates on the queen’s passing and what happens next.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is ready to go to any lengths to maintain the military support of the US and its allies, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

“Zelensky is doing everything and is willing to do anything to keep the military and financial support of the US and its allies, including showing the citizens of Ukraine that everything is fine, that everything is going according to plan,” she said at a briefing on Thursday.

In her view, Ukraine’s attempted counteroffensive in the Kharkov direction is also meant to persuade the West to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.

“This action is timed to coincide with today’s fifth meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Ramstein, Germany. All this is meant to convince the participants of this ‘meeting’ of the need to further increase military supplies, first of all, modern offensive weapons,” the diplomat said.

Graham Potter was appointed as Chelsea’s new manager on Thursday after leaving Brighton to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.

Potter has agreed a five-year contract to take charge of the Premier League club, who praised his “progressive football and innovative coaching”.

The 47-year-old earned widespread admiration for his work at Brighton.

He led Brighton to a ninth-place finish last season and took them up to fourth in the table this term, while demanding entertaining and tactically astute performances from his players.

Potter’s first game as Chelsea boss will be a derby at west London neighbours Fulham on Saturday.

“I am incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club,” said the Englishman.

“I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.

“I would also like to place my sincere thanks to Brighton and Hove Albion for allowing me this opportunity.”

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly, who axed Tuchel just seven games into the new season, believes Potter will fit perfectly with his vision for the future at Stamford Bridge.

“We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea. He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the club,” Boehly said.

“Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful club.

“He has had a major impact at his previous clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea.”

A Boehly-led consortium completed its takeover of the club earlier this year, bringing to an end Roman Abramovich’s reign.

Winners Of This Year's Ballon d’Or award to get NFTs

The winners of this year’s Ballon d’Or, the top award for individual footballers, will receive digital tokens to go with their gleaming trophies, the organisers told AFP on Thursday. ماكينات القمار على الانترنت

The France-based award, run by the Equipe media group, has feted the beautiful game’s best players for 66 years, bestowing on them global acclaim and a trophy in the shape of a golden football.

But this year Equipe is seeking to move into the crypto sector, offering a range of digital tokens (NFTs) — free for the winners but with hundreds more being sold to the public. العاب على الهاتف

Sport is awash with NFT projects as organisers, clubs and players seek to cash in on their fame.

The tokens are pieces of computer code stored on a blockchain, the digital ledger that holds information about digital assets.

They can be linked to a piece of art, a video game avatar or a real-world object, as with the Ballon d’Or.

NFTs are generally bought by people who hope to sell them on at a profit, their value based on supposed scarcity and collectability.

But the whole of the crypto sector has suffered a rout this year with the value of currencies and assets such as NFTs taking a pummelling.

Nevertheless, Equipe said the Ballon d’Or NFTs were part of a longer term strategy.

“This first collection will be followed by others as the Ballon d’Or, and more broadly the Equipe and Amaury groups, wish to project themselves in a sustainable way into the world of web3, the new age of decentralised internet,” said the media group.

Equipe said it would auction three NFTs that would give the holders “VIP access” to the awards ceremony on 17 October, followed by hundreds more after the ceremony.

Karim Benzema, the France and Real Madrid striker, is runaway favourite to win the men’s award this year.

Appropriately enough, he launched his own NFT collection earlier this year. كيف تفوز في روليت

Attempts to weaken Russia did not succeed. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Thursday.

“Eleven thousand sanctions are currently in effect against Russia but the war continues and attempts to weaken Russians were not crowned with success,” Orban said, cited by MTI news agency.

Hungary “will have enough gas” in winter and there is no need to halt production at plants in the country, the Prime Minister said.

“Energy will be enough for everyone and everybody who wants to invest and produce can come and invest here,” he added.

FG Urges Parents Not To Fear, Assures Security Of School Children

President Buhari Congratulates Emir Of Zazzau-Suleja, Awwal Ibrahim At 81

The Federal Ministry of Education has said that they are working closely with security agencies to further ensure the safety of schools and children from attack, urging parents not to fear.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Goodluck Opiah, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday at a news conference to commemorate the 2022 International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

According to him, the 2022 celebration is the third edition with the theme, “Implementing the School Safety Policy as a Tool to Protect Education from Attack: Our Collective Responsibility”.

Opiah said that there was need for stakeholders to protect education from violent situations and armed conflict.

He said that upholding the right to education and its continuity in such emergency situations as enshrined in the Safe School Declaration, which Nigeria ratified on March 20, 2019, was an action to be taken by all.

“The theme was devised by the ministry to create awareness of the existence of the School Safety Policy.

“And also the need for state governments, education institutions and stakeholders, civil society organisations, the military, and the general public to operationalise the guidance therein.

“The School Safety Policy copiously highlights the strategies for emergency preparedness in education institutions, measures for harm reduction, stakeholders to contact for help in case of imminent attack, deterrence of the military from using education.

“Consequently, the ministry will celebrate the event with pre-activities and a grand finale.

“The pre-activities were initiated by call letters to education institutions to commence the preparation of learners that will perform at the occasion,” he said.

Opiah also reacted to an alleged attack on Federal Government College Kwali, which led to closure of all unity colleges in Abuja.

The minister said that the directive for the recent closure of all unity schools was imminent to protect schools and children from attack.

“The closure of unity colleges was not a permanent measure but a reaction taken to protect the lives and safety of children.

“It was a right action in the right direction and the ministry demands commendation for that action.

“This is because it was during examination period. The schools were shut but the students were taken to other schools to complete their examinations.

“Schools are about to reopen and FGC, Kwali will also join them. We are working with security agencies because the security of our children is very important to us,” he said.

Alhaji Yakasai Recommends Adoption Of French System Of Govt

Alhaji Yakasai Recommends Adoption Of French System Of Govt
Tanko Yakasai

Elder Statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, on Thursday reiterated calls for Nigeria to adopt the French Presidential system of government.

Yakasai, a human rights activist and former liaison officer to late President Shehu Shagari, stated this in Lagos at the TheNiche Newspaper Annual Lecture with the theme: “2023 Elections and the Future of Nigeria’s Democracy.”

He said the most outstanding aspect of the French system of government was that it made it easier to replace non performing governments than the American Presidential system operated in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that France is a republic and practices parliamentary democracy with a hybrid presidential/parliamentary political system.

In the French system, the head of state is the French President who appoints the Prime Minister as head of government.

The French parliament is bicameral; the lower chamber is the National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale), which sits in the Palais Bourbon with 577 elected députés.

The upper chamber is the Senate (Sénat), which sits inside the Luxembourg Palace. It has 348 senators elected by an electoral college of representatives.

Yakasai noted that operating the American system made administrating Nigeria, which is a Federal State with diverse nature, more expensive to run and extremely difficult to develop and prosper, unlike many of its sister developing nations.

“The Federal system of government in Nigeria was established in 1954, making it the oldest on the African continent and should be jettisoned post 2023.

“Another important reason why I am advocating the adoption of the French presidential system is that it is far cheaper to operate and, therefore, more suitable to us as a developing nation,” he said.

According to him, the decision to drop the parliamentary system in Nigeria during the military era was largely influenced by American trained elites in Nigeria rather than exhaustive debate and objective evaluation of the full potential of the parliamentary system in Nigeria.

“In my opinion, that decision was not driven by proper rationale of the suitability of the American system in our own peculiar national situation.

“The decision has not done justice to the parliamentary system and Nigeria as a country and its developmental needs and economic circumstances.

“This is because the parliamentary system is more democratic in its nature than American Presidential system,” he said.

Yakasai, who said Nigeria is at a crossroads, noted that the political leadership under the current federal system remained far from being optimal.

“Today, 62 years after independence, it is shameful that Nigeria is described as a resource endowed but not rich nation,” he said.

He added that the regional system of government worked better for Nigeria and, therefore, said he supported a conscious shift to regional geopolitical zones arrangement. (NAN)
