China President Xi Jinping Sends Message Of Condolences To King Charles III

Chinese leader Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence on Friday to King Charles III of the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“On behalf of the Chinese government, the Chinese people and himself, Xi expressed deep condolences over the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and extended sincere sympathies to the royal family, government and people of the UK,” Chinese state media CCTV reported.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, in his message Xi emphasized the importance of “the development of China-UK relations.”

“Taking advantage of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassador-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK, I am willing to work with King Charles to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties to benefit our two countries and two peoples,” CCTV reported Xi said.

In his message, Xi said, as the UK’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth won praise and admiration widely. She was the first British monarch to visit China and her death was a huge loss for the people of UK, he said, according to CCTV.

Some context: In 1986 Queen Elizabeth II visited China with stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Kunming and Guangzhou. She became the first, and so far only British monarch to set foot in mainland China.

She toured various Chinese landmarks, including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Warriors.

Her visit came some two years after the two governments signed a joint declaration, paving the way for former British colony Hong Kong’s return to China.

Among the Chinese leaders the Queen met in Beijing was then-paramount leader Deng Xiaoping.

The Sokoto State Governor, Waziri Tambuwal, has denied resigning from his position as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum.

Tambuwal was a PDP presidential aspirant before his withdrawal for the eventual winner of the party’s ticket, Atiku Abubakar, during the party’s primary.

The denial is contained in a press statement signed by the Director General of the forum, CID Maduabum, and made available to newsmen on Friday.

“This is to inform the general public and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party , that the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF), Rt Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has not resigned as Chairman of the Forum contrary to some media reports.

“Members of the PDP GOVERNORS FORUM are working behind the scenes to resolve all contending issues concerning the Party. To this end a meeting of the Forum will soon be convened,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, during the PDP’s National Executive Council meeting on Thursday, the party’s the Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Wali Jibrin, stepped down and he was replaced with former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara.

Unknown gunmen have kidnapped one Funke Ayodele, owner of a popular supermarket known as ‘Cheapest Ladies and Kiddies Place’.

She was reportedly accosted at the gate of her house on Wednesday night after closing from her shop in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.

An eyewitness said the woman was about to enter her compound at Baptist church area in Ganaja-Lokoja when the gun-wielding hoodlums, numbering up to four jumped on her, dragged her out from her car, and took her away to an unknown destination.

The gateman and others who were at the gate when her assailants struck were reported to have scampered for safety when the hoodlums brought out guns and started shooting indiscriminately to scare people away.

A family source noted that the woman was picked up around 9 pm by her abductors who were alleged to be trailing her from her shop at Phase II area in Lokoja.

“She drove in, waiting for the gateman to open the gate of her house when suddenly four boys dressed in black regalia stopped her at gunpoint and dragged her to their car.

“We are very much concerned for her life, because she has been suffering from high blood pressure,” said a person from the family who pleaded anonymity.

She is said to be currently putting up a state-of-the-art family house behind her supermarket which is located opposite phase two estate area before a apopular Idrinana hotel on Lokoja -Okene road, Lokoja.

Her husband is said to be a director in the state ministry of Water Resources and was not seen in the office on Thursday.

Kogi state Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya did not respond to repeated calls and text messages when our reporter tried to contact him for confirmation.

Also, Commander Jerry Omodara (retd. 1xbet عربي ), the state security adviser to governor Yahaya Bello did not acknowledge calls and text messages to him over the incident.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the ex-militant leader, Asari Dokubo of mobilizing his alleged gangs to kill unsuspecting indigenes of Imo State and other parts of South-East.

The spokesperson of the secessionist group, Emma Powerful made the allegations in a statement on Thursday.

IPOB warned that the group was running out of patience, stressing that it would in no distant time, get back at Dokubo and his alleged criminal gangs.

The group vowed that the ex-militant leader lacked the power to stop the secession agitators, stating that even the Nigerian military was unable to do so.

A Nigerian man, Jeffery Oviasogie resident in Aberdeen, Scotland who raped a woman has been sentenced to four years and eight months by a High Court in Glasgow.

Oviasogie pleaded guilty to raping a 29-year-old woman in Bon Accord Terrace Gardens early on September 26, 2021.

The 21-year-old attacked his victim and forced her down on his return home from a night out in Aberdeen.

According to BBC, he had been employed as a support worker at Camphill special needs school in the city at the time.

The report also revealed that the Nigerian national’s visitor visa expired six months before the attack. He had been living in the United Kingdom since 2018.

The victim had been on a night out with friends before heading home in the early hours and met her victim walking.

He, then, suddenly came up and started talking to her and followed her as she continued into Bon Accord Terrace Gardens.

Prosecutor John McElroy previously said: “She began to feel uncomfortable. As she walked along a steep path, the woman was aware of Oviasogie behind her.

“Her next memory is of being on her back in a muddy area with him on top of her. She was screaming for help, but she was unable to move beneath his weight.”

McElroy said Oviasogie shouted her down to “shut up” and raped her as he held her down. While “she continued screaming and shouting. She was petrified,” a man heard her cries and spotted Oviasogie on top of the woman.

When the culprit realised this, he fled but was seen by the man to be wearing a distinctive red baseball cap.

Mr McElroy: “The woman remained on the ground, crying and curled into a ball.”

Officers found Oviasogie in Justice Mill Lane about an hour later, still wearing the cap. His jeans and trainers were also mud-stained – but he denied being involved in the attack.

Oviasogie’s lawyer, Edith Forrest, defending, said: “He was out after work with colleagues. He said he consumed a lot of alcohol, which he was not used to indulging in.

“He accepts he was showing off to a degree to his peers, which demonstrates a level of immaturity at the time. He says he often thinks of the victim and the impact this will have had on her.”

However, in his ruling, Judge John McCormick told him: “You assaulted and raped a lone female as she walked home in Aberdeen.

“You used force to hold her down and ignored her screams for help.”

The judge said Oviasogie will also be watched for an additional three years on his release and will be on the sex offenders list indefinitely.

Det Ch Insp Karen Main of Police Scotland said it was a “horrendous” attack, and described Oviasogie as “a dangerous predator”.

She added: “A young woman is dealing with the trauma of what happened to her that night and I hope that knowing Oviasogie is no longer a threat to other women gives her some sort of solace as she moves forward with her life.”

Minister of Education Doesn’t Deserve A National Honour – NANS

The federal government Thursday urged governing councils of universities to seek support of philanthropic organisations and individuals for additional funding of projects.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the advice in Abuja yesterday while inaugurating the governing councils for the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi and the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru.

Adamu, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah, cited trying economic times and government’s desire to bring in more private sector participation in tertiary institutions, asking the councils to come up with ideas that would generate more revenue outside government allocations.

“To this end, the councils should look outwards and enlist the support of philanthropic organizations and individuals for additional funding of projects in the Institutions. In addition, the councils can explore other sources of revenue through endowments,” he said.

He asked the councils to play their roles with skill and efficiency, provide the type of leadership that would stimulate rapid growth of the universities and make them more competitive and attractive.

“In doing these, you should ensure that the universities’ master plans, academic briefs and strategic plans are respected and their provisions strictly adhered to,” he said.

Adamu also said the idea that the chief executive or any principal officer of institutions should come from localities where they are sited had watered down the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Describing the practice as alien, he said merit should be the guiding principle.

He urged the councils to come up with ideas that would generate more revenue outside government allocations.

It’s Illegal To Parade Suspects, Human Rights Commission Tells Police, Others

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it is illegal and unconstitutional for the Nigerian Police Force, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other security agencies to parade suspects who have not been convicted.

Addressing reporters in Abuja Thursday, NHRC Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, said his commission would take a legal action against the police and other agencies involved in the act.

He noted that even the court had condemned the act of parading pre-trial suspects.

He called on any suspect paraded before trial to petition the commission, assuring that the case would be taken up.

“Unfortunately, we discovered that people whose rights have been violated in such manner, they walk away and forget everything once they are released on bail.

“Let me put it on record that anybody who has suffered that kind of treatment can approach the commission and together, we will follow up the case till we get justice.

“However, if after someone has been paraded and the person walks away without pursuing the case, it becomes impossible to tackle the person’s case.”

Ojukwu also said the commission would work with stakeholders to ensure that journalists were protected.

Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abuja Chapter, Emmanuel Ogbeche, said there was need for a charter for the safety of journalists.

The new King will be formally proclaimed monarch at a historic Accession Council on Saturday.

Charles has automatically become King after the death of his mother, but an Accession Council is usually convened at St James’s Palace in London within 24 hours of the death of a sovereign.

It will be later following the death of the Queen because the announcement of her death did not come until early evening on Thursday, meaning there was not enough time to set the plans in motion for Friday morning.

Historically, the entire Privy Council is summoned to the Accession Council to oversee the formal proclamation of a new monarch.

But with the number of privy counsellors – who are lifetime members and mostly past and present politicians – now standing at more than 700, restrictions have been put in place.

Just 200 will be summoned, and those cut will be asked to enter an annual ballot for a few remaining seats, with the decision prompting a row over the lack of consultation and the loss of the key duty, the Telegraph previously reported.

The Accession Council must take place before parliament meets, and parliament should meet as soon as practicable after the death of a sovereign.

The Accession Council is divided into two parts, and is presided over by the Lord President of the Council, who has ministerial responsibility for the Privy Council Office.

Penny Mordaunt was appointed Lord President of the Council, and Leader of the House of Commons, on September 6 in Liz Truss’s new cabinet, in place of Mark Spencer, with the Queen officially approving the appointment.

Ms Mordaunt is yet to be ‘declared’ Lord President at a Privy Council meeting because the event was postponed on Wednesday when the Queen was urged to rest.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has emerged as the new Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum.

Makinde emerged as the new chairman few minutes after the former chairman, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State resigns from the position on Thursday.

The Oyo state governor emerged as the new chairman at the ongoing PDP National Executive Council Board meeting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The NEC passed a vote of confidence on the PDP National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, putting to rest the clamour for his (Ayu’s) resignation by some aggrieved party members.

A total of 397 members of the NEC including past national chairmen of the party, the immediate past Vice President of the country, Namadi Sambo, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, among others were accredited for the meeting.

All the 397 members of the NEC present at the meeting voted in support of Ayu to continue as the chairman of the party.

PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Walid Jibrin, had earlier resigned from his position.

He said the decision was made to ensure the party’s presidential candidate emerged victorious in the 2023 elections.

Jibrin said he was sure he would be considered for a bigger position if Atiku wins next year’s presidential election.

He said, “I took this decision based on what I said in the past. I said that all we want to make sure of is that Atiku Abubakar becomes the President by all means, and that is why I sincerely decided to step down from the BoT. I discussed this with the candidate and he agreed with me. I am sure if the party wins, I will be given a bigger position.”

However, few minutes after his resignation, a former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, was named the BoT acting Chairman.

Wabara, who was before now, the Secretary of the PDP BoT, would be appointed to the presidential campaign council of the PDP.

The Department of State Service (DSS) says it recovered incriminating materials, including military accoutrements, large amounts of different currencies and denominations in the houses of bandits’ negotiator, Tukur Mamu.

The spokesman of DSS, Peter Afunanya disclosed this in reactions to Daily Trust’s enquiry about a raid carried out in the Kaduna house and office of Mamu in the hours of Thursday.

The DSS said many things recovered were so incriminating, saying the arrested publisher will be charged to court.

”So far, appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office. During the processes, incriminating materials including military accoutrements were recovered.

”Other items include large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments. While further investigations continue, Mamu will, sure, have a day in court,” Afunanya said.

Meanwhile, the secret police has beefed up security around its facility in its Abuja headquarters.

One of our correspondents, who visited the area at about 9:30am on Thursday, observed the presence of unusual number of masked personnel of the service.

A source at the headquarters of the secret police told Daily Trust that the deployment might not be unconnected with presence of Mamu at the facility.

Security sources said Mamu was arrested for his alleged involvement in collecting ransom and taking same to terrorists in exchange for kidnapped victims.

Daily Trust had reported how Mamu was arrested at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kaduna-based published who was first arrested in Egypt was detained for 24 hours before he was flown back to Nigeria.

Daily Trust observed that while the Egypt Air aircraft, which conveyed him and his family members, touched down in Kano around 1:55pm, he was immediately picked up.

DSS operatives were stationed at the entrance of the international wing of the airport several minutes before the aircraft landed.

Heavily armed operatives who were also in company of others dressed in mufti, were on guard at the entrance of the arrival section of the international wing of the airport where three vehicles – two hilux and one hiace- with Kano number plates parked by the entrance.

As passengers began to file out from the arrival section, one of the hilux moved forward while the luggage, presumably of Mamu and his family members. The luggage were loaded in one of the vehicles while the one which picked Mamu zoomed off.
