Two Siblings, One Other Land In Jail For Cybercrime In Ilorin (Photos)

Justices Adebayo Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin and Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin have convicted two siblings – Shekoni Kayode Taofeek and Shekoni Habeeb Damilare, alongside Adegbe Thankgod, for offences bordering on cybercrime and retention of proceeds of unlawful activities.

They were convicted on Thursday, September 8, 2022 after pleading guilty to two count-charges bordering on retention of proceeds of unlawful activities, based on their arraignment by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

While Taofeek and Damilare were convicted by Justice Yusuf, Thankgod was jailed by Justice Sani.

Count two of the charges against Taofeek reads:
“‘That you, Shekoni Kayode Taofeek sometime between 13th January, 2022 and 22nd August, 2022 at Ilorin, within the judicial division of the High Court, did knowingly had under your control, the gross sum of N14,606,100 (Fourteen Million, Six Hundred and Six Thousand, One Hundred Naira Only) being part of the gross sum of N54,194,680.00 (Fifty Four Million, One Hundred and Ninety Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty Naira Only) deposited in your Sterling Bank account number 0058929473 which is reasonably suspected to be unlawfully obtained and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319(a) of the penal code”

Count one of the charges against Damilare reads:
“That you, Shekoni Habeeb Damilare between 30th March, 2022 to 23rd August, 2022 at Ilorin, Kwara State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did knowingly had under your control, the gross sum of N2,526,144.00 (Two Million, Five Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand, One Hundred and Forty Four Naira Only) in your account number 2136057626 with the name: Shekoni Habeeb Damilare domiciled with the United Bank of Africa Plc which you knew to be proceeds of criminal conduct and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319(a) of the Penal Code”.

The defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges when they were read to them.

Upon their pleas, counsels to the EFCC, Innocent Mbachie and Aliyu Adebayo, reviewed the facts of the cases and prayed the court to convict them accordingly.

Justice Yusuf, thereafter, convicted and sentenced Taofeek and Damilare to six months imprisonment each. While Taofeek’s sentence was without an option of fine, Damilare was given an option of fine of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira Only).

Justice Sani also convicted and sentenced Thankgod to three years imprisonment on each of the two-count charges of cybercrime levelled against him by the EFCC.

The judge gave the convict an option of fine of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) on count one, while no fine was awarded on count two. In addition, the judge ordered the forfeiture of a landed property, one Toyota Camry car, an iphone 13 and Samsung phone used by the convict to commit the crime to the Federal Government.

The convicts were arrested by operatives of the Ilorin Command of the EFCC for internet-related offences. Further investigations showed that Taofeek had the sum of N14, 606,100 in his bank account which he could not account for. Damilare also had the sum of N2,526,144.00 in his account, which he could not justify. They were prosecuted and convicted.

APC Postpones Campaign Kick-Off Till Further Notice

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Ikechi Emenike, has warned that the party will expel any of its member who negotiates for 25% votes in the 2023 election.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Aba, Emenike alleged that some members of the party sold out and negotiated for 25% votes in the 2019 election which led the party to lose Abia state, and warned that APC will no longer tolerate such anti-party activities in 2023.

Emenike appreciated the concerns of the stakeholders of Aba over the decay in the city, stressing that the PDP has underdeveloped the city within the 24 years it has governed the state

He, however, outlined his vision for the state and assured that he was fully prepared to change the ugly narrative of the state.

“We have it clearly written in our manifesto what we want to do from the day we take over the government. And from that day, the state will not be the same again. Mark my words.

“To demonstrate our commitment to the development of the state and the people, we will establish building blocks of development and infrastructure that will stand the test of time. We’ll create employment for the youths and empower the vulnerable.”

In her remarks, the deputy governorship candidate, Mrs. Akara, stated that Emenike will restore the lost glory of Aba through the rebuilding of infrastructure and creation of jobs.”

Her words; “With Emenike in power the lost glory of Aba will be restored. Enyimba City will become popular once again. Unemployment will be addressed. Decayed infrastructure will be rebuilt and the economy restored. Insecurity will give way,” she added.

Earlier, the APC senatorial candidate for Abia South district, Mrs. Blessing Nwagba, said the state can no longer be entrusted into the hands of leaders without vision and urged all hands on deck to bring the desired change.

FG Says 28-Year-Old Nigerian Student Missing In Northern Cyprus

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) says a 28-year-old Nigerian student has been reported missing in Northern Cyprus since August 2.

The commission said this in a statement issued in Abuja by its Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

Balogun said that the disappearance of the student was reported to the commission by his mother, Mrs Dije Ibraheem.

The report of the missing student came barely 24 hours after NiDCOM repeated advisory to Nigerians against seeking educational succour in Türkiye Republic of Northern Cyprus.

He said that the missing student, AbdulSamad Abubakar, had called the mother on August 2, through another person’s phone number, crying “they have come to pick me up to a detention camp”.

“Mrs Ibraheem said AbdulSamad is a 300-Level International Relations student of Cyprus Science University and was living off campus.

“She said since that call on August 2, 2022 from an unknown number, with her son wailing and asking for help, she has not known his whereabouts or heard any news from him or the school authorities.

“Confused on what to do, she reached out to the agent who secured the admission and travelling documents for her son but he was not forthcoming too.”

The woman also said she had written a petition to the Consular and Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before coming to seek NiDCOM’s intervention, Balogun added.

According to him, the woman’s prayer is to get her only son back to Nigeria alive.

“I am here today at NiDCOM to beg you in the name of God to help me bring back my son alive, as I am scared of hearing any bad news about my only child. Please help me, I am a single mother,” she was quoted as saying.

The Secretary of the Commission, Sule Bassi, received the petition on behalf of the Chairman of NiDCOM, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

He assured Ibraheem that everything possible would be done to locate her son and bring him back to Nigeria.

Bassi, however, reminded her that diplomatic services would be difficult because Nigeria and the United Nations had no diplomatic relations with Northern Cyprus.

He, however, assured her that further investigation would be carried out by the Commission in conjunction with the Nigeria Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.

He reiterated the earlier advisory given by the Commission against sending students to Northern Cyprus due to negative reports from there, especially from students.

Turkey’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Hidayet Bayraktar on Thursday issued an open letter describing the advisory by the Commission as exaggerated.

NiDCOM, however, responded by releasing the list of Nigerians murdered in Northern Cyprus within three years. (NAN)

APC, PDP Presidential Campaign Councils Refuse To Disclose Funding Sources Of Tinubu, Atiku

With barely 18 days to the commencement of presidential campaigns, the sources of funding of campaign activities by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates remain a mystery.

According to the timetable of the Independent Electoral Commission, campaigns for next year’s presidential election will begin on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

The Director-General of the Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance, Adebayo Shittu, argued that the candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s plan to raise a budget for his presidential campaign should not be a subject of discourse or the business of the public. طريقة لعبة القمار

The former Minister of Communications noted that his principal “is a self-made man who doesn’t need external funding for electioneering activities.”

Responding to questions about how the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would finance his election, the Atiku Campaign Council spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, said, “All the questions you are asking should be directed to INEC, because the law mandates us only to give INEC reports on the questions you are asking.”

Prodded further, he said, “Can a candidate fund an election without a campaign structure? Has the campaign structure been announced? Lady, 25 Shot By Soldiers At Checkpoint In Port Harcourt

A 25-year-old lady, Damietta Green, is lying critically wounded in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital after she was hit by a bullet suspected to have been fired by a soldier.

The incident occurred in the Harbour Road area of Port Harcourt on Tuesday evening.

An eyewitness said the incident occurred close to the popular Rachael Hotel and opposite a branch of First Bank.

“Soldiers who are posted on guard duty at the Nigeria Correctional Centre (Prison) facility, usually mount roadblocks around the area to extort money from transporters of illegal refined petroleum product (kpofire),” one source said

Various sources said the madness was triggered when a Toyota Camry car suspected to be conveying the illicit product refused to stop.

“The soldier pursued the car and jumped on the bonnet. When the car refused to stop, he started shooting indiscriminately.

“There were many vehicles trapped in the gridlock caused by the checkpoint and the victim was in one of those vehicles, a Lexus 330 salon car,” a source said.

It was learnt that the errant driver of the Toyota Camry escaped the scene unhurt, but the vehicle was towed to the nearby Central Police Station.

Other passengers in the car told our reporter at UPTH on Thursday night that they were going home from a sales meeting when the driver of the Lexus car (registration number Abuja ABC 26 GX) offered them a ride.

“We know him (driver) in Town (a suburb of the city) and he offered us a ride home. We were at the checkpoint when the shooting started,” one of the victim’s friends said.

Emmanuel Oluwaseun, who offered the lady the ride, confirmed the story. He said the bullets went through the back passenger door and lodged into the back of the victim, who sat at the back of the car with another passenger.

“In the confusion, she was shouting that she had been shot, but we couldn’t do anything because the soldier was just shooting. When the chaos eased, we rushed her to the Central Police Station.

“The medical personnel said the matter was beyond them. They referred us to BMH (Braithwaite Memorial Hospital) where she was given some treatment and referred to UPTH,” he said.

Sources at the Central Police Station told our reporter that the trigger-happy soldier, identified as Sgt Yinka Ayileka, reported at the station but was allowed to leave after identification.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers Command, Grace Eringe-Koko, who was contacted on Friday morning, referred our request for information to the Army Public Relations Officer attached to the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt Barrack, Major Ike Iweha.

Major Iweha, when contacted, expressed shock at the report, revealing that he was as only aware of an incident in which a middle-aged man was wounded and treated.

He promised that the matter would be investigated, adding that on the interim a team would be sent to UPTH to ensure that the victim gets proper treatment immediately

Meanwhile, the aged mother, siblings, and friends lamented that she had been abandoned in the hospital.

The victim, who was still at the crowded Emergency Unit of UPTH, told Saturday Nation: “I was scheduled for surgery on Thursday (over 48 hours after she was shot), but till now (Thursday evening) nothing has happened. They asked me not to eat anything because of the surgery, but for how long will I remain like this?” she lamented in a frail voice.

It was gathered that some pellets were removed at BMH on Tuesday, but most remain embedded in her back and around her spine area.

Sympathizers and friends were also unhappy about the alleged plot by security operatives to sweep the incident under the carpet by blaming the incident on stray bullets during cult gangs’ clash in the area.

“It is very painful that the media could be used to spread a blatant lie to hide the evil done by the soldier who was on illegal duty at the post. Nigerians should help us get justice and to ensure that our sister does not die.”

2023: Fashola Urges Politicians Seeking Presidential Election To Stop Amplifying Nigeria’s Problems In Global Market Square

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has called on politicians vying for office in the 2023 general elections as well as citizens of the country not to “disrobe” the challenges of Nigeria in the global market square.

Fashola who was the keynote speaker at The Niche Annual Lecture in Lagos yesterday noted that the number of new 12 million voters registered will not be enough to sway the outcome of the elections next year.

He said the number of newly registered voters in 2022 is way less than the number of voters who registered newly in 2019.

This is as the former member of the House of Representatives, Dakuku Peterside, lamented the current economic downturn in the country, saying over 90 million Nigerians now live below poverty line.

According to Fashola, over 14 million newly registered voters had been recorded prior to the 2019 elections compared to the 12 million documented from this year.

“If you look at the number of people who have newly registered to vote in this election, the last number given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is 12,332,336 people. Those are the new voters registered for this election cycle. Whereas in 2019, there were 14,360,053 newly registered voters. While in 2015 there were 6,944,752 newly registered voters.

“So, if the hype about 2023 is anything to go by, the number of 12.332 million newly registered voters does not support it. This is because there are 2,027,657 voters less than the 14 million new voters who registered in 2019.

“We have seen all this hype before and it distracts from the real question which should be: how can democracy, especially the elections coming in 2023 make our lives better and make our country greater. Those, for me, are what we should focus on, not about whether there will be or there will not be an election. We should focus on these questions because democracy is simply concerned about popular participation in choosing a leader or set of leaders.”

He also cautioned against washing the dirty linens of the country in the global scene saying “we can win elections without exaggerating our problems. We can do so by offering credible service and well thought out solutions.”

Fashola averred that the current situation of the country “should challenge a level of sobriety in us not excitement. A serious reflection that says this is where we have reached? My advice is that we can win elections without disrobing our country before the global community. Elections and democracy for us must represent a feast of ideas and choices that bring out the best in us and the best in our country.”

On his part, former member of the House of Representatives, Dakuku Peterside, who also spoke at the event noted that the 2023 election is peculiar as “there will be the burden of governance and this time it will be very challenging after the elections.

The former director general of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) added that, ‘’The reason is that managing the expectation of Nigerian people is not going to be a walk in the park. One is that we face monumental insecurity, and it is very easy to lay blame on everyone other than ourselves. Two is the fact that apart from insecurity, the young people, the talents we expect to step back and build the country, are leaving in droves to other countries, against the backdrop of the ASUU strike. And we are not replacing them.

‘So, if the youth who are supposed to build the country, if they all leave the country, who will build the country. Who are we leaving the country for? Is it the old men and women who don’t have the energy to rebuild the country?”

He also lamented the state of the country’s economy saying “another thing is the challenge of the economy. I don’t think that we have had a time in our recent past where we have over 90 million of our citizens living below the poverty line.

“Debt to revenue ratio is 120 per cent. What it means is that we don’t earn enough to even service debt. The import of that is that we are going to face very stormy days ahead. Unfortunately, the truth is that the rhetoric of politicians is widening our ethnic, religious fault lines, instead of focusing on the challenges confronting us.’’

 

2023: Peter Obi Can’t Win More Than Two States, Social Media Campaign Can’t Bring Result — Ekiti Ex-AG

A former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Owoseni Ajayi, has dismissed insinuations that the 2023 general elections will be keenly contested among three leading presidential candidates.

Ajayi, a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party in the state, maintained that the battle for the presidency was between the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said, “Although the three leading presidential candidates are Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of Labour Party, the battle is between Tinubu and Atiku.”

The former AG said in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, said, “We have three principal presidential candidates; if you look at the credentials of the three of them, when you look at their pedigree, age and sagacity, Peter Obi is the best, but if Obi wins in two states, it must be from the South-East.

“The LP candidate has no structures to win election. Campaigning on social media cannot yield result in Nigeria of today. In Ekiti State today, where is the structure of the LP? Who is their chairman in the state and for most of the states in the country?

“On the election day, elections are determined and won by the structures of the political parties because they are the ones to arrange the agents, mobilise members to come out and vote on election day.

“Even in Anambra State where Obi comes from and was governor, the All Progressives Grand Alliance is ruling there. APGA has a presidential candidate. Unless Obi is able to persuade Governor Charles Soludo, that is the only way he can be able to secure 50 per cent votes in Anambra State,” Ajayi said.

Reacting, the LP Chairman in Ekiti State, Odunayo Okunade, said, “Obi will capitalise on the fact that he is the best among the three principal presidential candidates in terms of academic record, pedigree, agility and ability to move round to win the 2023 election.

“As against what they are saying, the LP and the Obi movement are well structured and we are working. By the time the campaigns start, that is when they will know that this political party and candidate are well structured.

“Again, politics in Nigeria has gone beyond the type of structures the opponents are talking about. Obi’s supporters are committed and the fold is expanding by the day. Asking where the LP or its chairman in Ekiti is, let them wait; by the time campaigns start, we will know who is on the ground.

“We will not tell them our tactics and plans. Across the country and in Ekiti State, we are working. The structures are in place in the 16 local government areas and 177 wards in Ekiti State. By the special grace of God, we will have 2023,” the LP chairman said.

Niger-Delta militant leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo -Asari has strangely falling – out with the leader of defunct Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, saying he (Tompolo) had never been involved in Ijaw nor Niger- Delta struggle.

Stakeholders suspect that Dokubo-Asari was angry with Tompolo over the pipeline surveillance contract the Federal Government awarded him, which extended to parts of Rivers state.

In a trending video, Dokubo-Asari, said: “I cannot even compare myself to Tompolo, it is unimaginable that I will condescend to the level of Tompolo. Who is Tompolo, what is his antecedents, what is his name?

“Who is he, do not allow me open a can of worms, who is Tompolo, which Ijaw struggle is he fighting? He is fighting Itsekiri people calling it Ijaw struggle and Niger Delta struggle. Is he even involved in Ijaw struggle?

“Fighting war with Itsekiri, do not allow me to talk, he has never been involved in Ijaw struggle. Never. Gbaramatu versus Itsekiri – that is the war he is fighting. He is not even defending other Ijaw people who are fighting, Ogbe-Ijoh has been fighting with Aladja has Tompolo gone there before,” he said.

Some weeks ago, Tompolo, reportedly reached out to Dokubo-Asari and another former ex-militant leader, Ateke Tom, now a king, in Rivers state, but it appears Dokubo-Asari and Tompolo have not sorted out the bone of contention.
