Strike: SERAP, Students Sue President Buhari, Others Over ASUU Demands

Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and five undergraduates have sued President Muhammadu Buhari and two others over alleged unlawful refusal by the Federal Government to meet the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Joined in the suit as defendants are Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and Attorney-General of the Federation/Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The students, who are co-claimants in the suit, include Dongo Daniel Davou of Plateau State University; Oyebode Joshua Babafemi of Obafemi Awolowo University; Ejie Kemkanma of the University of Port Harcourt; Peter Itohowo Aniefiok of University of Uyo and Imam Naziru of the University of Ibadan.

According to them, the refusal has occasioned the prolonged strike action and violated their right to quality education.

In the suit, numbered NICN/ABJ/269/2022 and filed last week by their lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), at the National Industrial Court, Abuja, the plaintiffs are seeking an order directing Buhari and Ngige to immediately implement all agreements with ASUU to end the strike action and violation of the student’s right to learning.

They said the disruption of classes undermines both the quality and duration of students’ education.

This situation, the applicants maintained, had aggravated existing disparities in access to university education in the country, further marginalizing economically disadvantaged parents and students.

SERAP and the students want the court to declare that the “refusal of the defendants to implement the terms of the FGN-ASUU Renegotiated 2009 Agreements and the 2020 Memorandum of Action, which has occasioned the prolonged strike action is unlawful, inconsistent, and incompatible with Nigeria’s human rights obligations and violates the students’ right to quality education.”

They also want a court order mandating the defendants and their agents to immediately release and pay all the withheld and outstanding remunerations, salary, allowances, and other emoluments both for the period and outside the period of the current strike action to all members of ASUU.

Supreme Court Justices Will Deplete As Abdu Aboki Bows Out Of Apex Court

The Justices of the Supreme Court will on Thursday, September 15 deplete to 13 when eminent jurist, Justice Abdu Aboki will bow out of the Apex Court at a valedictory session marking his formal retirement.

Justice Aboki clocked 70 years, being the statutory retirement age for Justices of the Supreme Court on Friday, 5th August, 2022, but the valedictory court session could not be held then due to the annual vacation of the Court.

Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki was sworn-in as Justice of the Supreme Court alongside seven other jurists on the 6th day of November, 2020, thus spending a rather short period of one year and eight months on the apex court’s bench.

His Lordship was born on 5th August, 1952 in Kano. He had his primary and secondary education in Kano State before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he studied Law.

Upon his graduation in 1976, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos; and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1977.

Justice Aboki was appointed a High Court Judge in Kano State Judiciary in 1987. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2006; from where he came to the Supreme Court in 2020.

He had served in different capacities in many Committees at different levels of Courts in the course of his career.

He had equally attended several conferences and workshops where he presented scholarly papers within and outside the country.

A statement by the Director of Press and Information for the Supreme Court, Dr Festus Akande indicated that valedictory court session for Justice Aboki would hold at 10 am at the main courtroom of the Supreme Court and will be presided over by the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN) Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The exit of Justice Abok has, however, depleted further the number of Justices on the bench of the Apex Court.

It would be recalled that Justices Mary Ekaego Peter Odili and Ejembi Eko had retired from the court this year.

The remaining 13 Justices of the court are: Olukayode Ariwoola, Ag CJN, Musa Dattijo Muhammad, Kudirat Motommori Olatokunbo Kekere Ekun, Inyang Okoro, Chima Centus Nweze, Amina Adamu Augie and Uwani Abba Aji.

Others are Lawal Garba, Helen Morenikeji Ogunwumiju, Ibrahim N.M. Saulawa, Adamu Jauro, Tijjani Abubakar and Emmanuel Akomaye Agim.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, says a payment platform, one of the bones of contention surrounding the protracted industrial strike embarked by the members of the Academic Staff Union Universities, ASUU, is yet to be approved.

This was disclosed by Adamu, yesterday, while fielding questions on Channels TV. Recall that ASUU had demanded that its members be exited from IPPIS payment platform to the University Transparency Accountability Solution, UTAS, provided by the union. Adamu said the decision on whether or not to approve the payment platform is left with President Buhari.

“The President is actually waiting for the report of the technical committee on the three payment platforms. I have seen one of the reports but I have not seen the final one. From what I have seen, the U3PS, is probably the best, followed by UTAS and IPPIS,” he said.

According to him, the increment in salaries of university lecturers and other tertiary institutions like Polytechnics and Colleges of Education would not begin immediately, saying it will commence in January next year. Speaking on the ‘no work no pay policy’, Adamu said that the federal government is not ready to change its decision.

“I don’t think the government would rescind. It is not only payment of salary that should motivate them to go back. There are many things that can motivate them to go back to classroom,” he said.

Atiku, Tinubu, Obi Others Invited On Peace Agreement

A group, Coalition Movement for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has examined the achievements of frontline presidential candidates for the 2023 presidential election and concluded that with their (candidates) track records, Bola Tinubu deserves to become Nigeria’s next president.

The group said the All Progressives Congress flagbearer outclassed other candidates, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party respectively in terms of achievements in political offices they previously held.

In a statement on Sunday by its Convener, Senator Rilwan Akanbi, COMBAT said the achievements of Tinubu during his stint as Lagos State governor present him as the favourite to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. سباق الخيل مباشر ).

According to the group, what appeared to be common among the four leading contenders is the fact that they have participated and won the governorship elections in their states in the past. In addition, they have held different political positions at the federal government levels.

The statement read, “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands out among the major contenders in promotion of democratic consolidation to reposition Nigeria before and during his tenure as Lagos state government. It is on record that his stand for expanding the frontier of governance through the creation of Local Government and efforts to sustain it despite opposition by the PDP government under Obasanjo-Atiku tickets makes him far better in terms of ability to restructure the country if given the mandate to lead the country. This is incomparable with Peter Obi of Labour party who refused to allow the democratic selection of local government chairmen for 8 years while in office.

“At the inception of the democratic system in 1999, it is a tradition for states to carry handout bowls to Abuja for survival until Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu introduced intervention in the areas of internal revenue generation that led Lagos State to prosperity. The Department of State Services has warned Nigerians over making comments on its arrest of the terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mamu.

The DSS, in a statement by its Spokesman, Peter Afunaya, Sunday, asked the public to leave the agency alone and allow it to concentrate on the investigations which it said the outcomes had been “mindboggling.”

This was coming hours after the controversial Islamic cleric, Sheik Gumi, to whom Mamu is an aide, had faulted the arrest of the negotiator.

Gumi, at a religious gathering on Friday, said, “Nigeria’s constitution did not say you can arrest someone without any proven evidence criminalising him and without charging him to court. You cannot arrest and keep him in detention arbitrarily.

“Take him to court to face trial. Keeping him in custody despite being a family man was just to intimidate him. This intimidation is also terrorism. Arresting people unjustly is also terrorism; just like the terrorists do by going to somebody’s house to kidnap him.

“It’s not about Tukur Mamu, you all know that whenever they arrest innocent people, I always talk, not to talk of someone that I know and I’m only advising the government to release him so that we can apologize to him to forget what happened.”

Reacting in its statement, the DSS said, “The DSS has followed, with keen observation, overzealous comments by sections of the public in view of issues relating to the arrest and investigation of Tukur Mamu.”

“The Service wishes to state that it is not distracted with some of the skewed narratives pervading the media space. Instead, it requests to be left alone to concentrate on the ongoing investigations, the outcomes of which have remained mindboggling.”

“Meanwhile, the Service will cease further comments on the subject matter since the court will determine its course. Consequently, the public is hereby enjoined to desist from making unguarded utterances and await the court proceedings.”

Mamu, who negotiated the release of Abuja-Kaduna train victims, was arrested on Tuesday at Cairo International Airport alongside his family, by foreign security agents. He was handed over to Nigerian authorities on Wednesday.

His residence and media office would be later be raided by the DSS in the early hours of Thursday.

The Director of Strategic Communication of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Alake has defended the source of wealth of the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, saying he has known Tinubu to be wealthy before politics.

Alake, who made this assertion in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, noted that Tinubu has been trading in stocks over the years to build his wealth.

He attributed the source of Tinubu’s wealth to investment in the stocks of blue chip companies.

Alake said, “He made his money well before he got into office. I think what is important to Nigerians, really, is to know that this man was not a pauper before he came into office, like some others.”

Alake, however did not disclose whether or not Tinubu owns or has investments in any company in Nigeria.

He said, “What is my business about the company that he owns in Nigeria? If tomorrow you become like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, why should I be bothering about the companies you own as long as it is not proved that you have taken the money of your state or whatever company you work for?

“It is not proven and you are not indicted in any court of law. Why should I now be bothering my head?

“It is an extraneous issue and, like I always say, pandering to the whims and caprices of those who are jealous and extremely envious and suffering from OCH, obsessive-compulsive hatred, of Asiwaju,” said.

FG Urges States To Domedticate Act To End Discrimination Against People With Disabilities

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Social Development and Disaster Management, Nasir Sani Gwarzo, had urged state governments to domesticate the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018 for effective service delivery to all People With Disabilities (PWDs) in the country.

He made the call in Abuja at the opening of the conference of directors responsible for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

He noted that the Act seeks inclusiveness of the persons with disabilities in the areas education, healthcare as well as socio-economic and civil rights, among others.

Director, Special Needs of the Ministry, Nkechi Onwukwe, said, “As we may be aware, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) constitute a social group that is vulnerable to societal discrimination and negative public perceptions. They also face attitudinal barriers from the community, family members and service providers alike, as well as environmental and communication barriers.”

“These barriers have not only reduced their voices and participation in programme planning, but also their access to essential services.”

“They equally face systemic marginalization that lead to lower economic and social status, increased risk of violence and discrimination, barriers to access education, health care, information and services and justice as well as civic and political participation. These, thus hinder their participation on an equal basis with others.”

The family of a woman in Kaduna State, who gave birth in captivity, has sought financial assistance from the Federal and Kaduna State governments as the bandits demanded N50 million ransom to release the nursing mother and her two sisters.

The family said the three sisters were kidnapped on July 17, 2022, in Mando, in the outskirts of Kaduna, at their family house, where they were tending to their sick mother.

Their mother, who could walk unaided before their capture, has now been confined to the wheelchair due to the trauma of her children’s abduction.

Journalists were told that the eldest of the sisters, who was heavily pregnant when they were kidnapped, had given birth in captivity without recourse to medical or human care for both mother and child, as they were subjected to harsh whether conditions, eating and drinking whatever was available in the bandits’ den.

Recounting the family’s ordeal, father of the nursing mother and her sisters, Malam AbdulWahab Yusuf, said the bandits broke into their Mando home about 1:05 am the fateful day.

He said: “My two daughters used to take care of their mother who is sick. That day, their elder sister, who was pregnant came from her husband’s house to look after her mother. The bandits broke into the house, I ran out as I jumped the back fence but my three daughters were kidnapped and taken to the forest.

“They asked for N140 million, but now they have reduced the ransom to N50 million. The family has been adversely affected by the trauma. My wife, who was able to walk unaided before the incident, now uses wheelchair. A surgery was recently carried out on her. I have not been myself, I cannot sleep, once it is night, I don’t know how I feel.”

Also speaking, the elder brother of the kidnapped sisters, Kabiru Yusuf, said: “Since the kidnap, we have been negotiating with them. The bandits initially demanded N140 million but we pleaded with them that we are poor people, so they reduced it to N100 million and they later reduced it to N50 million last Saturday and threatened that if we don’t have the N50 million ready, we should not call them again.

“My sisters lamented, yesterday, that they were being maltreated, adding that the bandits’ commander want to leave the camp and may not return until after a while, so we should talk to them.

“But I told them that we have sold everything we have but what we raised is not tangible and we don’t have anything to sell again and they started crying and I broke down weeping too.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government, Kaduna State government, charity organisations, philanthropists and well spirited individuals to assist us in securing their release. We don’t want anything to happen to them, if anything happens to them only God knows what effect it would have on our mother, who is now on wheelchair.”

SAD!! 3 Nigerian Friends Buried Together In South Africa After Losing Their Lives In An Accident (Photos)

On the 28th of August, 2022 three Nigerian friends who are Yorubas died together in a car accident in Pretoria, South Africa. The men were identified as Akinjopo Ifeoluwa Dickson, Aladeokun Adedeji, and Fadare O. Martins.

The three friends had already wrapped up a birthday party when they decided to pick up Akinjopo’s daughter in a particular location. However, it was a journey of no return for them as they suffered an accident on their way. According to the sources who spoke to Instablog9ja, the families waited for four hours for the arrival of an ambulance but it was too late when the ambulance arrived.

The three friends were buried together on the 10th of September, 2022. It was an emotional moment for the family and friends who came to witness the entombing of their bodies.
