2023: Peter Obi, Other LP Aspirants Won’t Win – Fani-Kayode Tells Peter Obi Supporters

Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) has advised Peter Obi’s supporters, better known as Obidients, to prepare for defeat in the 2023 elections.

The former Aviation Minister, in his latest essay, stressed that anger alone cannot fuel a revolution as there must be a goal.

Fani-Kayode said though he takes Obidients seriously because they are a formidable movement, “they are more like a loose cannon than a guided missile”.

The ex-presidential aide, however, expressed admiration about youths “venturing into the dark and murky waters of Nigerian politics”.

“I pray that they survive it and last, even if they don’t make an appreciable impact at the polls next year”, he noted.

FFK said Obidients seem to lack a clear purpose “which their leader, other than just wanting to be President, is incapable of providing”.

He expressed concern over their “high expectations”, adding that “mental trauma might engulf them after crushing defeat”.

Fani-Kayode ruled out Labour Party (PDP) candidates from victory in the February and March contests, citing the well grounded opponents they will face.

“I doubt that they will win one Senatorial district or one seat in the House of Representatives let alone a Governorship election or the Presidential election.

“It is at that time that we shall find out whether they are men and women or mere children venting on social media and expressing frustrations at public events.”

Fani-Kayode added that it is after Obi and LP’s followers have suffered loss that their resolve would be tested.

Two Children Killed As Lagos School Fence Collapses

A fence has collapsed at a Lagos school, Covenant Point Academy at Ajose Street, in the Amukoko area of Lagos State, leaving two children, Samat Saheed and a yet-to-be-identified girl dead.

The nine-year-old girl was walking past the front of the school to link her destination in the area while three-year-old Samat was playing around the fence of the school, close to his mother’s shop when the fence collapse hit the duo.

Our correspondent gathered that as the fence caved in on the minors, its impact crushed Samat’s head, killing him instantly, while the nine-year-old girl lost consciousness and reportedly died shortly after the incident.

An eyewitness, Ganiyu Ayeloja, said residents, who were traumatised over the incident, informed the police, adding that the owner of the school had been arrested.

He said, “The police came around and they arrested the owner of the school building. The building has no pillars, they just stacked blocks. The building was not well structured at all; there was no wiring, no pillar, and nothing to hold the building together that’s why it fell easily.

“It is unfortunate that the two children were around that area when it collapsed. One of the children’s parents had a shop close to the school building, that was why he was there and his parents were immediately alerted.

“The Oba of Ijora land was called to the incident yesterday and everyone is sympathising with the deceased families. People from the Lagos State Building Control Agency came to inspect the building this morning (Sunday).”

Another resident, Akinniyi Akinwale, said the nine-year-old girl was running errands when the tragic incident befell her.

He added that when she didn’t return home, her parents started searching for her but were informed that the fence of the building claimed her life.

He said, “The wall in front of the school just fell on both of them. The girl who died was sent on an errand to that street, so no one knew her parents there but she was taken to the hospital after the incident and it wasn’t until night time when her parents started looking for her that they were informed of her death.”

Reacting to the incident, a former president of Nigerian Institute of Building, Kunle Awobodu, said blocks used to construct buildings nowadays were very weak and substandard as he urged site engineers, developers, among others to desist from using substandard materials.

He said, “This is quite unfortunate. Those of us in the construction industry have laid emphasis on the threat of natural force or pressure on buildings, to withstand such natural pressure especially in an area that is exposed to strong winds, there is a need to introduce columns.

“Pillars are referred to as reinforced columns to enable fences to withstand the natural force being generated by the wind. Constructing coping is necessary on top of these fences so that persistent rainfall does not have an extreme impact on the stability of the fence.

“Many of the blocks used to construct buildings nowadays are very weak and substandard; they are usually six inches and 150ml in thickness which is unable to withstand wind pressure that makes it important for all of us to be more vigilant,” he added.

We Will Not Allow You To Destroy Public Universities – ASUU Tells Federal Govt, Governors

The Federal government on Monday urged the National Industrial Court to order the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its seven months strike.

Joined as a claimant in the matter is the Minister of Education with the President of ASUU as sole defendant.

The matter, which came up before Justice Polycarp Hamman, brought by Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, on behalf of the federal government, by way of referral is praying the court to order ASUU to resume academic activities, amongst other prayers.

When the matter slated for mention came up, Mr Ebunolu Adegoruwa, SAN, informed the court that he was representing Socio- Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and that he had filed a suit on the same subject matter before the same court.

He also stated that in the suit NICN/ABJ/269/2022, SERAP is the claimant with the federal government as the defendant.

He therefore proceeded to apply that the extant suit be consolidated and SERAP be joined in the suit as a defendant, instead of multiple suits on the same matter before the same court.

Counsel to the claimant, Mr T.A Gazali, SAN, in response said the application was premature and added that there was no need for SERAP to pray to be joined in a suit orally in a matter that did not have its name on the causelist.

Mr Femi Falana, SAN, counsel to ASUU in his response informed the court that both counsel had informed him on Monday that they both were filing some papers.

Falana in addition urged the court to step down the matter to enable both counsel to file their papers and then return at a later date after he would have responded to the claimant’s process

Adegoruwa replied that the defendant had not denied the existence of the suit SERAP filed and served on them.

Gazali on his part also informed the court that his process will be filed Monday and Falana said he would need three days to reply to the process.

The judge in his ruling adjourned the matter until Friday, for further mention.

He also directed that the claimant should file, serve his process, the defendant to also file and serve his response before the adjourned date.

Hamman in addition ruled that SERAP’s application for be joined in the suit was premature.

The suit filed by the claimant is also seeking the court to give the matter an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end.

The claimant also in the instrument of referral is praying the court to: “Inquire into the legality or otherwise of the on-going prolonged strike by ASUU leadership and members which had continued even after apprehension by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“Interpret in its entirety the provisions of Section 18, LFN 2004 especially as it applies to cessation of strike once a trade dispute is apprehended by the Minister of Labour end Employment and conciliation is on-going”.

He drew attention to the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s statement about his refusal to conduct a dialogue with those who put forward ultimatums.

Clubs up and down the United Kingdom are reportedly due to hold further talks today (Monday) to discuss further postponements ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

As a mark of respect to the UK’s longest reigning monarch, fixtures from the grassroots level to the Premier League were postponed at the weekend following her death at the age of 96.

The Queen died on Thursday evening while Arsenal, Manchester United, and West Ham United were preparing for European action, with the Gunners already kicking off before the news broke.

Man United and West Ham’s games did go ahead as scheduled that night before the postponement of domestic fixtures, and the Queen’s state funeral has been confirmed for Monday, September 19 at Westminster Abbey.

The Metropolitan Police and other forces from across the country are expected to travel to the capital to oversee the event, which will require unprecedented levels of security.

As a result, the threat of further postponements – especially those games involving clubs in the capital – is looming large, as footballing authorities and police try to find a solution.

According to the Daily Mail, fresh talks with occur on Monday between police and football clubs, but there has already been disruption to the impending round of European fixtures.

Rangers’ Champions League Group A clash with Napoli has been pushed back by 24 hours from Tuesday to Wednesday, and no Partenopei supporters will be in attendance at Ibrox.

Gers fans will also not be permitted to attend the return fixture in Naples next month, and there are concerns that Arsenal’s Europa League clash with PSV Eindhoven could be postponed.

In order to combat a lack of police resources for games in the capital, the idea of moving fixtures away from London has been mooted, but that scenario may be difficult to pull off logistically.

Liverpool is set to travel to Chelsea on Sunday night, while Brentford hosts Arsenal in a London derby, and Tottenham Hotspur are due to tackle Leicester City on their own turf.

There was originally hope that Spurs’ fixture could have been played at the King Power, but that game is now unlikely to be moved with Leicester Tigers taking on Newcastle Falcons in the Gallagher Premiership on Saturday.

Nevertheless, the National Police Chiefs Council is still optimistic that fixtures can be fulfilled, saying in a statement: “Since the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the UK has activated a national policing operation.

“UK Policing is working closely with other organizations to ensure that events are held safely and with the appropriate security.

‘Following the decisions of the Premier League and English Football League to cancel this weekend’s matches, we will work with football clubs to try and ensure that, where possible, football fixtures can take place safely when balanced against the requirement to support national events and deliver day to day policing. This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved.”

Prior to Arsenal’s clash with PSV, Chelsea is set to host Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday, which would be Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the club.

Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra, has strongly condemned the gunmen’s attack on Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy on Sunday night in the community of Enugwu Ukwu in the state’s Njikoka Local Government Area.

The attack on Ubah, who represents Anambra South Senatorial District, claimed the lives of some people in the convoy, while the Senator narrowly escaped the bullets of the suspected assassins.

Soludo said in a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, that his administration was fully committed to eliminating all forms of criminality in Anambra state.

According to him, the attack was the state’s criminal underworld’s “last ditched effort of a sinking boat.”

He assured the populace that all security organizations were on high alert to find the attackers of the heinous attack and that they would be subjected to the full force of the law.

Soludo expressed his condolences to the senator, the families of the deceased members of his staff, the state police commissioner, and the fallen police officers.

While confirming the incident, Anambra Police Command, through DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, its Police Public Relations Officer described it as unfortunate and sad.

He said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Echeng Echeng had already led operatives to the scene of the attack around the Nkwo Enugwu Ukwu market area.

The PPRO said though details of the incident were still sketchy, operatives were on the ground while the situation was being monitored.

He said that further details would be communicated to the public.

Mr. Kameh Ogbonna, the media assistant to Ubah, had in a statement said the senator was able to escape the terror because of the bulletproof vehicle he was riding in.

“If not for the bulletproof jeep the senator was ridding in, he would have been dead by now.

“We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from all sides and as I speak with you Obum, the special aide to the senator is dead.

“About seven security operatives were hit by the assassin’s bullet,” he stated.

As Russian forces suffer a string of stunning defeats in Ukraine, Moscow is playing up Beijing’s support for its invasion ahead of a key meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week.

Russian troops were forced to flee the strategic city of Izium — their main bastion in northeastern Ukraine — on Saturday after a swift Ukrainian counteroffensive.
It was Moscow’s worst defeat since its retreat from Kyiv in March — and a sign that the war might be entering a new phase. Over the past week, Ukrainian forces have recaptured more than 3,000 square kilometers of territory — more than Russian forces have captured in all their operations since April.
Back in Russia, senior Russian and Chinese officials put on a united front to pave the way for an expected meeting between Putin and Xi on the sidelines of a regional summit in Uzbekistan — their first face-to-face meeting since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
And according to the Russian Parliament, a senior Chinese leader has voiced explicit support for Russia’s war on Ukraine — claims that are not included in the statement from the Chinese side, and run contrary to Beijing’s previous efforts to maintain a veneer of neutrality.
On Thursday and Friday, China’s top legislator Li Zhanshu — a close ally of Xi and third-ranking leader of the Chinese Communist Party — met with Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s State Duma, and other Russian lawmakers in Moscow after attending an economic forum in the eastern city of Vladivostok.
According to a statement from the State Duma, Li assured its members that “China understands and supports Russia on issues that represent its vital interests, in particular on the situation in Ukraine.”
“We see that the United States and its NATO allies are expanding their presence near the Russian borders, seriously threatening national security and the lives of Russian citizens. We fully understand the necessity of all the measures taken by Russia aimed at protecting its key interests, we are providing our assistance,” Li was quoted as saying.
“On the Ukrainian issue, we see how they have put Russia in an impossible situation. And in this case, Russia made an important choice and responded firmly,” he added.
Beijing has firmly refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — or even refer to it as a “war.” Instead, it has repeatedly laid the blame for the conflict on NATO and the United States.
But previously, Chinese officials have not publicly endorsed the “necessity” of Russia’s invasion, or admitted that Beijing was “providing assistance.”
That unequivocal supportive language is missing from the Chinese readout of the meetings. In fact, in the Chinese version, Li is not quoted as making any reference to Ukraine at all.
According to the official Xinhua News Agency, Li expressed China’s willingness to “continue to work with Russia to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns.”
Li also criticized sanctions against Russia, calling for greater cooperation with Moscow on “fighting against external interference, sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction,” according to Xinhua.
While it is not uncommon for China to omit contents of high-level meetings in its official readouts, the significant discrepancy between Beijing and Moscow’s statements has caught the attention of experts.
“The Russian version went much further than any Chinese version. If they didn’t clear this with Beijing, that might really anger some in Beijing,” wrote Brian Hart, a fellow with the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Bad news for China?

Moscow and Beijing have emerged as closer partners in recent years as both face tensions with the West, with Xi and Putin declaring the two countries had a “no-limits” partnership weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
But Russia’s recent setbacks in Ukraine could create a serious dilemma for China, just weeks before Xi is widely expected to secure a norm-breaking third term in power at a key Communist Party meeting.
“Beijing cannot calmly sit by and see Russia defeated in Ukraine, because that will lead (at a minimum) to a severely weakened Russia that is a less useful ally and less able to distract Washington, and (at a maximum) could create political instability in Moscow,” Hal Brands, a professor of global affairs at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Twitter.
At an extreme, Brands added, political instability in Moscow could create instability within the “strategic partnership” in which Xi has invested so much.
“You can bet that, as Russia’s position deteriorates, Putin will look for increased Chinese support. If Beijing doesn’t find a way of providing some such support, we could see greater strains in the Sino-Russian partnership sooner than many analysts imagined,” he wrote.
It is open to question to what extent China is willing to support Russia at the cost of its own strategic interest and objectives. So far, Beijing has not provided direct military or financial aid to Moscow that could spark sanctions from Washington.
Some experts see the growing relationship between China and Russia as a mainly pragmatic one, based on cost-benefit calculations that can easily shift.
“The China-Russia relationship is not one based on ‘shared values’ or a sense of respect/affection…It is mostly based on interests. And interests can shift quickly as dynamics change,” wrote Hart, the CSIS expert.
“This does not mean the China-Russia relationship is weak. Only that it is not necessarily durable,” he added.

All Progressives Congress in Oyo State on Sunday said it had uncovered plans by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission to change the location of some polling stations with a view to frustrating voters on the day of the election.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare.

The APC spokesperson said the opposition party in the state was in possession of an intelligence report revealing how the state governor, Seyi Makinde, had allegedly compromised some bad eggs within INEC to assist in relocating polling units in the state to locations that may be inaccessible, hard to reach or even non-existent, on poll day.

The statement read, “Makinde, already getting the signals pointing to his inevitable electoral doom, has issued a standing instruction to some bad eggs within the Oyo State office of INEC, to immediately relocate several polling units across the state, from their advertised addresses to unknown or obscure locations.

“A run-through of the affected units revealed clearly the devil behind the detail; they are units considered strongholds of our party, which given the pervasive atmosphere of free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria, our party is expected to win hands down, without fuss. ويليام هيل

“Not only would this plot cause voters incalculable stress on election day, for many will be hearing of such for the first time on poll day, but many will also become disenchanted once they are unable to locate the new polling units. This will then drop the idea of participating in the voting exercise and thus reducing the chances of the electoral victory of the preferred candidate”.

Wondering why Governor Makinde and his party, the PDP had to be plotting electoral fraud day and night, despite boasts declaring his re-election a walk-over, and deadly propaganda to boot, the party informed them that no matter the depth of their plots or the dexterity of their schemes, the resolve of the good people of Oyo State to free themselves from a government of deceit, will always tear it all to smithereens.

“By this notice, we alert the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Zonal Electoral Commissioner, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, and all electoral stakeholders to beam the commission’s searchlight on the activities of INEC staff, especially those in the Oyo State office, so that they do not allow some bad eggs tarnish the commission’s hard-earned reputation nor put to disrepute, its concerted efforts at organizing free, fair and credible polls.

“We have put behind us the ugly experience of 2019 when a supposed unbiased umpire became an interested party and connived with the PDP to perpetrate electoral fraud. The hatchet job was well done such that most polling stations were turned into drinking joints by PDP members as early as 12 noon on the election day as a result of the assurance they had got. لعبه bingo

“But this time round, INEC shall be made accountable for all unclaimed PVC, electoral materials, and the proper conduct of the poll.”

However, the PDP has described the allegation by the APC as spurious, saying the opposition party in the state said that out of frustration because their plans to rig the coming polls had been blocked by INEC.

The spokesman of the PDP in Oyo State, Mr. Akeem Olatunji, said in an interview with our correspondent that it has dawned on the APC that its electoral failure was imminent.

He said, “Their allegation on relocating polling units confirms the notion that APC is practically dead in Oyo. When someone has lost a fight, they will be fabricating reasons for their defeat and that is exactly what the APC is doing now. لعبة البوكر

“They know that they cannot win without manipulation and the plan has been blocked by INEC, so that is why they have resorted to spurious allegations.

“We are not the ruling party at the federal level and INEC is a federal agency so, how is it possible for the opposition party to control the agency under the ruling party? They are saying what they have in mind about rigging the coming election but we are confident that INEC under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu would do a good job in the 2023 elections.

“With the BVAS introduced by INEC APC knows that they cannot get half of the votes they got in 2019 because the party had scattered and defeating them this time would cause us to break a sweat.”

Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd EPL Weekend Matches Could Be Postponed As Police Meets Clubs

Police and football clubs will continue their discussions on Monday, amid the possibility of wide scale postponements of matches this weekend, according to SportsMail.

Officers from across the country are set to be drafted into London to work during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday, September 19 and events surrounding it.

It is believed this will see resources stretched both in the UK capital and beyond.

Fixtures, including Manchester United vs Leeds and Chelsea v Liverpool on Sunday are among those being discussed, with further meetings planned today.

There are also doubts over Arsenal’s Europa League group game with PSV on Thursday, while Rangers’ Champions League fixture with Napoli has been delayed 24 hours, with away fans banned.

Other options are being considered. It is thought that switching games has already been discussed.

However, Everton are at home on the same day Chelsea would instead head to Anfield. Leicester Tigers are also in action on Saturday, which makes Tottenham flipping their clash with Leicester City highly unlikely.

The visit of rivals Leeds to Old Trafford is one of the most heavily policed matches on the calendar, while large resources would also be needed for Liverpool’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

Fixtures outside the Premier League could also be at risk. In the Championship, Millwall, QPR and Watford are all due to be at home on Saturday.
