Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has insisted that a southern candidate must replace Iyorchia Ayu as the national chairman of the party before the beginning of the 2023 election campaigns scheduled for September 28, 2022.

He said Ayu, who is from the northern part of the country, could not continue to hold the position since the presidential candidate of the party is from the North.

This was made known on Thursday by George at a press conference in Lagos.

George said Ayu’s refusal to fulfill his promise meant that members of the party in the south were of no importance.

He said, “ Let me reiterate again that the will of the people must be respected and the six top offices in the country must be distributed equitably and fairly because PDP is not a private company. The office of the National Chairman must come to the South before we commence the presidential campaign if victory is to be secured in the next general election.

“In May this year, we elected our presidential candidate in the person of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, setting aside the principle of rotation as enshrined in the constitution of our party in the interest of peace and unity of our party. Today, we are in a situation in which our National Chairman is from the same zone as our presidential candidate.

“Some people are insisting that there is nothing wrong with this present arrangement. Some have argued that this happened during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, where the candidate and the national chairman were from the same zone.

ASUU Strike: Court Strikes Out NANS’ Suit Against ASUU, FG

Students protesting the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, on Thursday, blocked the Ife-Ibadan road.

While the action lasted, motorists and commuters were stranded for hours.

The students gathered on the platform of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone ‘D’ South West.

The group’s zonal coordinator, Olatunji Adegboye, during the protest in Gbongan, called for a law that will prohibit children of politicians from schooling abroad.

Adegboye said such a law would make the operation of public universities more efficient.

He also demanded proper funding of education while passing a vote of no confidence on the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

He said, “We are on the road because of the ongoing ASUU strike that started on February 14, it is seven months already. We are tired of staying at home, we want to resume.

“We are demanding proper funding of education sector. We are passing a vote of no confidence on the Minister of Education, (Adamu Adamu) because I believe he is not competent.

“We want the legislative arm to pass a bill that will make it impossible for children of politicians to travel outside the country to study. They should be here and study with us in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the ASUU  President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union is ready to suspend its ongoing strike if the Federal Government shows willingness to accept its “minimum” demands.

Osodeke spoke on Thursday during a town hall meeting on tertiary education tagged, ‘The Locked Gates of our Citadels – A National Emergency’ in Abuja.

He said the recent Federal Government’s decision to drag the union before the National Industrial Court would worsen the situation, adding that the union is ready to engage with the government to end the strike.

He said, “On all these issues, we have given the government a minimum that we can accept, but they have not responded.

“We negotiated and agreed that they should sign. This is very simple and it will not take more than one day.

“On University Transparency and Accountability Solution; and Integrated Personnel and Payroll System, we say ‘release the report of the test you did, let’s look at the one who came first and take it as we agreed.”

“So, we have given them the minimum we want and we have to come down and they can do it in one day if there is a will.

“If the government loves this country, these children and their parents, then they should come to the table and let us resolve these issues in one day.”

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, Ishaq Oloyede, Thursday, expressed concern over the way many Nigerians blamed the organization for the 912,013 illegal admissions processed by tertiary institutions in the country.

He, however, said JAMB would not hesitate to prove its innocence and expose the persons behind the nearly one million illegal admissions into tertiary schools between 2017 and 2020.

This is as the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig Gen. Mohammed Fadah, vowed that he would block further attempts by institutions to present unqualified persons for the National Youth Service Corps.

The JAMB Registrar and Fadah stated these at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Batch ‘C’ pre-mobilization workshop of the NYSC in Abuja, with the theme, “Stemming fraudulent enlistment in the mobilization process: Time for drastic action to arrest the menace.”

Oloyede said, “All problems related to mobilization, either rightly or wrongly, are put at the doorstep of JAMB. We are ready to accept but we won’t hesitate to prove our innocence. We will be proving our innocence by exposing those who are actually culpable.

“We have over 900 institutions that are producing admission candidates with JAMB, but we have continued to take measures in conjunction with the NYSC to make sure that the fake ones among those who are being mobilized are demobilized.

“One of the steps we have taken is to introduce the Central Admissions Processing System, which accommodates all the genuine cases and exposes all the bad ones.

“CAPS has shown clearly that those who are bad have nowhere to hide and will continue to be exposed.

‘’We started CAPS in 2017, and some people thought it was a joke, but we have come out with the list of people who have been illegally admitted between 2017 and 2020.

“As of today, on their own, tertiary institutions who initially denied any culpability, have confessed they gave illegal admission to close to one million candidates between 2017 and 2021.

“Last year, the Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, eventually granted amnesty and directed that we should try to rescue close to one million candidates that had been illegally admitted.

“If you take into consideration that the country admits about 600,000 candidates into tertiary institutions each year, you will realize that close to one million illegal candidates is enough to destabilize the system.”

Consequently, he called on institutions to make sure that they followed the rules.

Oloyede said there were different shades of malpractices in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by JAMB.

“If you’re talking about cheating in the exam hall and trying to change marks, go to southern Nigeria. However, if you’re talking about manipulating the registration process before the exams, go to northern Nigeria,” he said.

Other issues identified by the JAMB Registrar bedeviling the system included students trying to compromise staff for mobilization; fraudsters defrauding candidates with fake admissions; delay by institutions in processing genuine admissions and the delegation of authorities by institutions to less qualified persons who are compromising their integrity.

The NYSC chief expressed concern about the declining quality of graduates being presented for mobilization.

He said, “During the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Streams I and II orientation programmes, our field officers detected a good number of prospective corps members, especially those claiming to be foreign-trained, with shocking inability to defend their supposed educational qualifications.

President Buhari Orders NNPC To Fix East-West Road

The President has ordered the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries to ensure that section 4 of the East-West road, spanning from Eleme Roundabout to Onne junction, is fixed without delay through the Tax Credit Scheme.

He said that the East-West road project currently handled by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing is the largest infrastructure in Nigeria,and very dear to his administration.

Buhari stated this on Thursday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State while delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the meeting of the fifth National Council on Niger Delta held at Ibom Icon Hotel and Suites.

The event was with the theme, ‘Harnessing 21st century Development Initiatives and Strategies for Greater Development in the Niger Delta’.

The President who was represented by the Minister of Environment, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi, said the completion of the project is a ”top priority for this administration”

He said, “The East-West road project which is now being handled by the federal Ministry of Works and Housing is the largest infrastructure project in Nigeria, as it’s very strategic road, connectors the country’s busiest and foremost commercial cities in the region.

“Considering the priority this administration places on the completion of this project, the Ministry of Petroleum has directed NNPC and it’s subsidiaries to step in and fix section 4 of the East-West road (Eleme Roundabout to Onne Junction), through the Tax Credit Scheme.”

He stated further that his administration had undertaken critical reforms in the Niger Delta Development Commission, adding that the implementation of the recommendations of the Forensic Audit Report which is being implemented in phases would bring about the constitution of the new board, which according to him is the desire of the most stakeholders in the region

He added, ”One of the cardinal mandates of my admissions is to tackle corruption. To this end and in response to the call of the Governors of the South- South geopolitical zone for a Forensic Audit of NDDC from 2000- 2019, the Report of Audit had been submitted and the implementation of it recommendations has commenced in phases

“I hereby assure you that this process will eventually bring about the Constitution of the a new board for the commission which is the desire of most stakeholders in the region.”

In his remarks, chairman of the council and Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Umana Okon Umana, explained that the meeting which is held annually, is a platform for bringing all Development Partners to the same table to ”proffer solutions to developmental and Socioeconomic issues in the region”, adding however that the council could not gold for the year 2021, for some cogent reasons.

He disclosed that his administration would publish a compendium of all completed projects undertaken the NDDC in all the states in the Niger region.

Umana, said the need for the publication of the compendium became necessary as some states are of the opinion that NDDC has not done enough.

The Minister said ”We intend to publish a compendium of all completed projects of NDDC in all the states in the Niger Delta region, because some states are saying that NDDC has not done enough.. The perception of people about what is not reported is that nothing has been done, so let people challenge us. when we publish the compendium” he said.

Wike Signs Law Allowing Women To Inherit Their Father's Estate In Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike on Thursday signed into law the Prohibition of the Curtailment of Women’s Right to Share in Family Property Law No. 2 of 2022, a piece of legislation which allows women to inherit from their father’s assets.

Speaking on the law to prohibit the curtailment of women’s right to share in family property law, Governor Wike expressed displeasure at how most cultures, particularly in Rivers State, do not encourage what engenders growth among the people.

He wondered why women are deprived from sharing in the inheritance of their families when they are often the most useful members of the society in comparison to most male children.

Governor Wike asserted that the law is important to the development of the State, because it will enable its people to actualise their potentials, as women will be allowed by law to inherit their entitlements.

“I don’t know why it’s a taboo; because you’re a girl, because of this is a woman, you’re not entitled to inherit what belongs to your father.

“It is not you who decides whether you will have a girl or you’ll have a boy, it is God. So, put yourself in their shoes today where, by the mercy of God you have three children and they’re all girls and you struggle in life to see what you can keep for your children.

“Tomorrow, one of their uncles comes, and say, my friend, girls don’t inherit their father’s property. With all your efforts in life, somebody comes to discriminate against them, why? We have even found out that women are more useful to us then even the men.

“The day, you’re getting old and dying you’ll know that you need more daughters than men. They will leave their husbands house and come to take care of you.”

Governor Wike urged women not to be afraid of any threat from members of their families concerning inheritance. He asked them to stand up for their rights and challenge any discrimination against them in court, using the law in order to access their entitlements

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has said the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in the state has adopted a campaign slogan, 5 over 5, meaning securing victory for the Presidential , Governorship, Senatorial,House of representatives and House of Assembly Candidates, insisting that Abia is PDP.

The governor stated this on Wednesday while welcoming the members of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the PDP led by her new acting Chairman and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who called on him at his Umuobiakwa Country Home.

He also said there must be genuine reconciliation and truth if the party must rise above the current challenges confronting it, and prayed that the party will know the variables that have changed and respond to them accordingly, Onyebuchi Ememanka, Chief press Secretary to the Governor said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Governor stressed that PDP must remain angry and hungry for power, adding that the party must correct the mistakes that made it lose election in 2015.

According to the Governor, it is better for the party not to wash its dirty linings outside, maintaining that the PDP has the capacity to solve the problem internally. To that end, he enjoined the BOT to look at the issues dispassionately and expressed the hope that the new BOT Chairman as a career diplomat would rise to the occasion.

The statement read further, “The Governor said that the BOT members have the capacity to resolve the PDP problems and assured that he would help them actualize peace in the party. He stressed on the need for PDP members across the country to pursue the 2023 elections with more vigour , saying that the members must be committed to achieving victory in the forthcoming general elections.

“He congratulated Senator Adolphus Wabara on his appointment as the acting BOT Chairman of the party and said that he might have been appointed to the position this critical period because of his background and capacity to speak the right words at the right time. He assured Senator Wabara that he would do everything within his powers to ensure he succeeds in his new assignment.

“Earlier in his speech, the acting BOT Chairman, Senator Wabara said he was in the State to inform the Governor officially that he was recently appointed the acting Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees. He said he deemed it fit to come to start his assignment from his home State.

“He informed that the BOT desires to look into the problems in PDP, hence the decision to move around to call on Governors and other stakeholders of the party with a view to ensuring victory for the party in next year’s elections, maintaining that PDP has conflict resolution mechanism with which to handle its problems.

“The meeting later went into an Executive Session after which Governor Ikpeazu and Senator Wabara spoke to journalists.

“Other members of the PDP BOT who were part of the delegation are former Governors of Enugu and Kogi States, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo and Alhaji Ibrahim Idris. Others are a former. Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt Hon Eric Acho Nwakanma, former Minister, Saminu Turaki, SAN, former National Deputy Chairman of the party, Chief Shuaibu Oyedokun, former Minister, Hajia Zainab Maina and Dame Dr. Esther Uduehi.

“The PDP Gubernatorial Candidate in Abia State, Professor Uche Ikonne and his running mate, Hon Okey Igwe, House of Assembly Member, Hon. Fuel Tanker Explosion Kills Many In DRC

The governor of the province of Kongo-Central has announced that a fuel tanker explosion in the western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday night left “several people dead and seriously burned”. لعبت روليت

The accident, still unexplained, occurred on national road 1, near the village of Mbuba, in the territory of Madimba, 120 km west of Kinshasa. According to civil society sources, the vehicle was heading towards the Congolese capital and exploded near a small market.

A tanker had exploded after a collision at the same location in October 2018, killing more than 50 people.

No further toll was available early Thursday morning.

“It is more than time to take drastic and courageous measures to strengthen the regulation of transport, especially that of flammable products, to put an end to this cycle of disasters. The RN1 should not be a graveyard,” the governor commented in his tweet. العاب روليت

We Are Willing To Call Off ASUU Strike – Prof Osodeke

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, says the union is willing to end its seven-month-old strike.

Osodeke disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, at a National Town Hall Meeting on Tertiary Education tagged: ‘The Locked Gates of our Citadels -A National Emergency.’

Recall that the union embarked on industrial action on February 14, making it over seven months since public universities across the country were closed down.

The Federal Government recently sued ASUU at the industrial court in an attempt to end the strike.

Osodeke reiterated the union’s commitment to return to school if the Federal Government puts its proposal on the table, saying that negotiation could be reached if the government was willing.

“If the government loves this country, these children and their parents, then they should come to the table and let us resolve these issues in one day”.

The ASUU president also expressed sadness over the lingering strike resulting in the government taking the union to court.

He said suing the union was not an option as it would further worsen the situation of the students and tertiary education in the country.

Osodeke claimed that if the court forces the lecturers to return to school, they won’t force them to teach with open minds, saying that the students would be at the receiving end, NAN reports.

Abia Central: Rep. Onuigbo Presents Proof Of Service On Atuma, INEC, APC As Court Fixes Oct 5 For Hearing

Federal High court siting in Umuahia, Abia State presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike has adjourned till September 30th the suit filed by the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Rep. Sam Onuigbo seeking to restore him as the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC for Abia Central senatorial district ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Rep. Onuigbo had insisted that he is the duly elected senatorial candidate of APC in Abia Central, saying the APC erred by submitting the name and details of Emeka Atuma whom he said did not contest the primary election.

Also joined in the suit as respondents are Emeka Atuma whose names and details have been submitted as the candidate, All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The suit slated for commencement of hearing on Thursday could not proceed following a preliminary objection filed by the counsel to the first defendant less than 24 hours to commencement of hearing.

In the preliminary objection, counsel to the defendant made reference to a primary election conducted on the 7th of July, which the plaintiff said does not exist.

Council to plaintiff, Barr. Emaka Obegolu (SAN) however urged the court to strike out the preliminary objection.

Counsel to APC, V.C Nwankwo who stood in for for his colleague, Prof. Sam. Erugo told the court that the party did not receive the originating summon.

The counsel to INEC and the Emeka Atuma agreed that they have been served notice of originating summon.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the court sitting the council to the Plaintiff Barr. Emaka Obegolu (SAN) said “ All the parties came today, prepared to hear the originating summons with all the candid application but the counsel for APC Prof. Erugo sent a colleague of his to come and represent APC. They filed their preliminary objection this morning and served the order this morning (Thursday).

“The list of preliminary objection contains allegations of facts which we need to consult with my client and respond to, although we find it very provocative because those issues raised have nothing to do with the matter we came for today.

“The matter we came for today is based on the primary election conducted on the 28th of June but in their notice they are referring to a primary election conducted on the 7th of July which is not existing we will respond accordingly and when we come back on the 30th of September by the grace of God. The court will hear our applications”.

Barr. Vigilius Nwankwo who stood in for Prof. Sam Erugo speaking to newsmen noted that Thursday was not originally fixed for the hearing of the suit but was rather fixed for the 5th of October.

He said “today was not originally fixed for the hearing of the substantive suit from the record of the court as confirmed by the judge. The matter was slated for hearing on the 5th of October then suddenly a letter was written apparently from the plaintiff asking the court to fix it to an earlier dated as against that of 5th, so the court graciously granted it to today so that all the parties should be able to come to court so by the time all the parties are represented and all the processes are before the court, the court can now take either that 5th or a later date which will be for the hearing of the main case.

“However, we filed our preliminary objection yesterday, the preliminary of the first defendant which was not filed along- side the original processes suit filed and in the preliminary objection we are asking the court to strike out the suit or dismiss it, that it is incompetent.

“So that motion was served on the Senior learned Advocate of Nigeria Obegolu who appeared for the plaintiff and he will need time to respond and after his response we also have the right to reply on points of call so the court graciously and benevolently adjourned to 30th of September for hearing of everything so the effect is that both the hearing of the preliminary objection and the main suit will be taken together and that’s what is the practice direction and even the Federal High court rules contemplated so the proceedings went well.”
