Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has lauded the people of the state for the warm reception accorded to President Muhammadu Buhari during his September 23 official visit to the state.

Uzodinma said this when he spoke after a Church service at the Government House Chapel in Owerri on Sunday.

He commended the people for their show of commitment by identifying with the President in spite of the sit-at-home order by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The governor attributed the success of the visit to the prayers of the people.

“By the grace of God, Imo has been restored to peace and order,” he said.

He urged the people to jointly support the government for the overall good of the state.

”I call on all sons and daughters of our dear state to come out and be part of the government, the vanguard which is ready to change the old style of doing things, and embrace the new style of doing things, ” he said.

He commended the day’s homily that harped on sacrificial service for eternal gains, saying it was in tandem with the vision and mission of his “Shared Prosperity Government”, which was to put the interest of the people first before individual interests.

He urged the congregation to deeply reflect on the message while praying to God for the accomplishment of his administration’s goals and objectives.

The governor’s wife, Mrs Chioma Uzodinma and top officials led by the deputy governor, Prof. Placid Njoku, attended the service.

Police authorities in Katsina State on Friday paraded a 58-year-old suspected Indian Hemp dealer with 180 carefully sealed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.

The suspect simply identified as Abdurrazaq Ajibade of Kofa community in Kwara State but residing behind Magama Restaurant in Katsina metropolis, was arrested while attempting to smuggle the prohibited items to the Niger Republic.

While parading the suspect at the Command headquarters, Katsina, the police spokesman Gambo Isah revealed that the suspected trafficker was arrested on September 7th, 2022 at about 16:30 hours based on credible intelligence.

Although the remaining members of the syndicate comprising a driver and one other member escaped, the arrested suspect confessed to having been in the deal six consecutive times each of which the sum of N60, 000 is being offered to him as his commission to take care of his family.

Ajibade during the police interrogation also stated that he was arrested at ‘Welcome to Katsina Gate’.

“I am not the dealer of the prohibited items, my own is just to deliver the items to the destination. I am just serving as the middleman,” he said. “It’s one Hambali from Ogbomosho that hired my service.”

In the meantime, the police also succeeded in neutralising one suspected armed robber along Koza village in Mai’adua Local Government Area of the state which is sharing a border with the Niger Republic.

The neutralised suspected armed robber is among the three suspects who stole a Toyota jeep from Abuja.

Isah displayed the corpse of the suspected armed robber in a press briefing on Friday at the command headquarters. He recalled that the success was recorded after they received an intelligence report that armed robbers robbed someone in Abuja of his black Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number ABC 165 HP Abuja.

He called on residents to continue to assist the security operatives with useful information that could lead to the arrest of criminal elements to ensure lasting peace and stability in the state.

“Detectives from the Anti Kidnapping Unit gave the hoodlums a hot chase and succeeded in tracking them. They engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel and neutralised one of the armed robbers and recovered the vehicle.

“The armed robbers have gone sophisticated by using a network jammer so that the vehicle tracker and mobile networks cannot work.

“As God would have it, we used the sophisticated methods too and tracked them down,” the spokesman added.

Nineteen people have been confirmed dead while eight others were injured in a Sunday auto crash at Yangoji-Gwagwalada Road in the FCT.

Mr Dauda Biu, Acting Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the figures to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) when he visited the accident scene.

Biu said the crash which occurred minutes into Sunday involved three vehicles – two Toyota Hiace buses with registration numbers MUB- 30 LG and DWR-985 XJ and an articulated vehicle.

Biu said 31 people were involved in the accident comprising 11 males, one female and 19 others who were charred beyond recognition.

“Out of the 31 victims, eight persons comprising of seven males and one female sustained various degrees of injuries, while 19 others were burnt beyond recognition.

“Investigation showed that the main causes of the crash were speed limit violation and wrongful overtaking which eventually resulted in loss of control,’’ he said.

According to him, the Toyota Hiace bus with Registration Number MUB- 30 LG, crashed into the Citroen articulated vehicle and burst into flames, killing everyone on board.

“The second bus hit the first bus from behind and also caught fire. The fire melted the second bus with the Bauchi State number plate.

“It was coming from Takai, Kano State while heading to Benin. The Citroen vehicle loaded chicken feeds from Zaria in Kaduna State and was heading to Akwa Ibom.

“The nineteen corpses were trapped but extricated by rescue operatives,’’ Biu said.

He added that police had taken over the investigation and met with relevant authorities for the mass burial of 18 of the mutilated corpses.

The bodies could not be preserved for identification as they were burnt beyond recognition, he said.

“Clearing of obstructions for free flow of traffic is still ongoing as you can see and we will do our best to ensure we have a crash-free society,’’ Biu told NAN.

“Injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital in Kwali in the FCT and one identified male corpse was deposited at the mortuary at Kwali General Hospital,’’ he said.

Biu cautioned road users to always avoid excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking and other bad driving behaviours. (NAN)

FG To Establish Job Centres Across Nigeria, Says No Going Back On Pulling 100 Million Persons Out Of Poverty

The Federal Government, weekend said it is setting up job centres in the 774 local government areas of the country as well as improving the Nigerian Electronic Labour Exchange to match jobseekers with jobs.

Already the government said the informal sector especially the artisans has been included in the National Health Insurance Act that was recently passed into law to help those that have not been able to take care of themselves or their families when they are ill to go to the hospitals and be taken care of.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ms Kachollom Daju disclosed this when she received members of Labour Correspondents of Nigeria, LACAN in Abuja.

She expressed optimism that with the new National Development Plan 2021 to 2025 which is multi-sector, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and other ministries are working hard to ensure that the government policy of lifting 100 million people out of poverty is achieved.

According to her, “It’s not just federal government. The private sector is supposed to play a huge role because we cannot all be dependent on the government.

“The private sector has its own role to play. And that’s why the federal government has shown that for the development plan, a certain percentage is a huge percentage of what it takes to ensure that employment, infrastructure and all that is carried out by the private sector. I know that the private sector is going to play a huge role in achieving this.”

Continuing, she said, “So, we will work together and for the Ministry of Labour, we have different agencies and departments that have to do with employment skills. As you all know, and recently, the Labour Market Information System, which we’re bringing out for the citizens to know is to ensure that data is collected.

“And alongside that, we’re actually going to improve on job matching, the Nigerian Electronic Labour Exchange which has been on but now we are only going to improve on where you match job seekers with the job.

“It has been going on but apparently many Nigerians are not aware of that, so the ministry is upgrading that and ensuring that hopefully, I do not want to give a date but I know that we are improving more and actually constructing more job centres across the nation.

“We have around 16 now and we are going to that the 36 states and Abuja, all have job centres not only in the cities centres but also in the 744 Local Government Areas and we have started that in the 2022 Budget.

“We want more job centres created in the 744 Local Government Areas and the states, that is how the government equally want to help.”

She said that one of the agencies in the ministry, the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, was brought to ensure that the informal sector which has remained a problem for the government is well taken care of.

She said that the NDE has different schemes that cut across the board where employment is reduced for the use.

“Not only for the youth, but you also have schemes that are for women only, solely for women, you have agric skills, you have mature people skills, and they are trained in various different vocational skills all across the country.

“You have bead making, mechanic training and so many different things, you actually have a rural infrastructure, where roads are built and hospitals are maintained, and many things like that,” Daju said.

She further stated that “A large per cent of people are in the informal sector and with the National Health Insurance Act which was just passed, the insurance has to go to the informal sector too now and it is all part of what government is doing

“It will equally help the artisans who have not been able to take care of themselves or their families when they are ill to go to the hospitals and being taken care of.

“NSITF (Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund) which is part of the Ministry of Labour, has Employment Compensation Act, where anybody who has an accident at the place of work is compensated and paid a certain amount, depending on how much they have been doing or how much you earn and they have been doing that.

“They have actually taken the bill before the National Assembly, where it will be improved upon and better things will come to the citizens and we are hoping and praying that the National Assembly will be able to pass the bill in time as it will make it easier for employees who are supposed to pay one per cent to the fund.

“All employers are expected to pay one per cent to NSITF which is part of the Employee Compensation Act.

“Yes, I would say government policy to reduce poverty by 2030 is real, to cut down youth unemployment is real.

“The statistics can speak for themselves and this actually is multi-sector and it cuts across all MDAs.”

The Permanent Secretary said that the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, the Ministry of Information and Culture, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and all the MDA’s have their individual roles to play in reducing poverty.

“But we all come together as one government to ensure that the citizens are given what is deserving of them,” she submitted.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice in Nigeria, Abubakar Malami has said the justice sector has been the one that saved the country’s economy from total collapse, which would have been brought about if P&ID had succeeded in enforcing an arbitral award of over $10billion.

The AGF said the several recoveries made by the ministry had also played major parts in keeping the economy afloat.

Speaking over the weekend at the maiden top management retreat of the Federal Ministry of Justice held in Kano, Malami said the sum of US$311million recovered funds were deployed into critical infrastructural projects, such as the Abuja-Kano and Lagos-Ibadan expressways, as well as the second Niger bridge.

“On economic front, we have been able to save our economy from total collapse, which would have been brought about if the P&ID had succeeded in enforcing an arbitral award of over US$10billion.

“We have also ensured the restoration of our country to the path of growth and development through the settlement of the multibillion-dollar adverse claims on the Ajaokuta steel plant.

“Our asset recovery drive has secured the sum of US$322million, which enabled the federal government to embark on empowerment programmes, which have taken over 100million persons out of poverty as part of the national social investment programmes,” he added.
