An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced the convicted kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans and his accomplice, Victor Aduba  to 21 years imprisonment to life imprisonment for kidnapping a businessman Slyvanus Ahamonou  and collecting N$420,000 as ransom from his family.

Justice Hakeem Oshodi handed out the sentence to the trio on Friday after convicting them on two counts of conspiracy and kidnapping of a businessman, Donatus Duru.

The victim is the Managing Director of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

In convicting the trio, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge against them beyond a reasonable doubt.

In reaching his verdict on Evans, the judge held that he observed the demeanour of the witness, stating that in some of the confessional videos played in court, Evans had mentioned some of the other defendants and the roles they played in the crime.

“He was seen freely laughing and willingly answered questions. A close look at his body shows no sign of torture. He did not look unkempt. He is seen laughing even when he was told that he must be a rich kidnapper,” Justice Oshodi said.

“He showed no remorse in the dock and tried to lie his way out of the crimes despite the video evidence.”

He concluded that the evidence tendered before the court especially their video confessions corroborated their guilt.

The court discharged and acquitted Ogechi Uchechukwu and two former soldiers of the Nigerian Army, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba, for lack of sufficient evidence linking them to the crime.

The Lagos State government had arraigned Evans alongside Uche Amadi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, and Victor Aduba for allegedly kidnapping the Managing Director of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Limited, Donatus Dunu, on February 14, 2017.

The state had claimed that the convicts committed the alleged offence between February 14 and April 12, 2017.

The prosecution had further told the court that the incident took place at about 7:45 pm, along Obokun Street, in the Ilupeju area of Lagos.

Man City Beat Other Clubs As World’s Best Club With Highest Soccer Power Index

Manchester City spent €145 million during the 2022 summer transfer window as the club seeks to defend its Premier League crown. To strengthen their squad, the club signed five players for the first team; Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez, Stefan Ortega, and Manuel Akanji. The new reinforcements helped the club to become the world’s best football team based on the Soccer Power Index.

According to data presented by FairBettingSites.co.uk, with a Soccer Power Index of 93, Manchester City FC ranked above Real Madrid, Barcelona FC, and their rival Liverpool FC.

The Rise of Manchester City

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group four years ago, Manchester City’s rise has been astronomical. The huge cash injection enabled the club to attract big names, and titles soon followed. After the last title-winning season, the club continued its on-field success.

The Soccer Power Index ranks football teams based on goals scored, adjusted goals, shot-based expected goals, and non-shot expected goals. These criteria result in offensive and defensive ratings for each team, which are then converted to an overall score on the Soccer Power Index.

According to the index, Manchester City dominates the football world. With a Soccer Power Index of 93, the Premier League club ranked three spots above the top Spanish clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, which have 87.7 and 87.1.

Bayern Munich, as the runner-up, hit an index of 92.2. PSG ranked as the third most successful football team globally, with a Soccer Power Index of 90.4. Manchester City’s rival Liverpool FC follows, with 89 points on the scale.

The Second-Largest Brand in Football World

Besides leading the chart of the best football teams globally, Manchester City has also become the second largest brand in the football world this year. With a brand value of €1.32bn, Manchester City has pulled ahead of FC Barcelona for the first time since 2015. Last year, the Premier League club reported the highest revenue in the football industry, causing its brand value to jump by 18.7% in a year.

Real Madrid remained the dominant brand in the global football industry, with a value of €1.52bn. The third-placed FC Barcelona saw modest brand growth of less than 5% in 2022 to €1.3bn.

Liverpool FC has seen its brand value jump by 30% to € 1.27bn in 2022, ranking as the world’s fourth most valuable football club brand. Manchester United fell to their lowest-ever rank at 5th, with a club brand value of €1.25bn.

2023: Court Strikes Out PDP’s Suit Seeking To Disqualify Peter Obi, Tinubu

Peter Obi Commends Tinubu’s Decision To Visit Benue Massacre Sites

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, declined to disqualify the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, from participating in the 2023 presidential election.

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Donatus Okorowo, equally refused to invalidate the candidacy of the presidential flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

It held that a suit the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lodged against the two presidential candidates, lacked merit and deserved to be dismissed.

The PDP had approached the court, accusing both Obi and Tinubu of acting in breach of the Electoral Act.

It told the court that contrary to provisions of the electoral law, both Obi and Tinubu, failed to nominate their running mates in due time, choosing rather to temporarily hand over their Vice Presidential tickets to placeholders.

PDP told the court that whereas the candidate of the Labour Party, Obi, chose Dr Doyin Okupe as the placeholder for his Vice Presidential post, the other hand, candidate of the APC, Tinubu, submitted the name of Alhaji Kabiru Masari as his own placeholder.

Plaintiff, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1016/2022, contended that the Electoral Act, 2022, did not make provision for a “place holder” or temporary running mate.

It argued that the subsequent resignation, withdrawal or substitution of Okupe and Masari, by both the LP and the APC, were illegal and unconstitutional.

PDP maintained that Obi and Tinubu could only qualify to contest the 2023 presidential election with Okupe and Masari, as their respective running mate.

It further argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was bereft of the power to accept any withdrawal or substitution of both Okupe and Masari, without the LP and the APC conducting fresh primaries to substitute Obi and Tinubu.

PDP told the court that both Okupe and Masari are not products of any primary election and as such was not validly nominated by the LP and the APC.

Meanwhile, in his judgement on Monday, Justice Okorowo held that the suit was not only incompetent but amounted to gross abuse of the judicial process.

The court held that it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain an incompetent suit and accordingly dismissed it.

“This suit qualifies as one which amounts to an abuse of court process”, Justice Okorowo held.

Gunmen Kill One, Abduct Travelers In Kaduna

39 Children Kidnapped By Gunmen On Katsina Farm

Rampaging terrorists in the Kurgi community in the western part of Birnin-Gwari general area in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have killed a motorcyclist and abducted scores of travellers along the Birnin-Gwari, Funtua road.

The terrorists were said to have blocked the road where no fewer than 30 vehicles were trapped and passengers’ loads were carted away.

The captive drivers were made to pay between N300,000 to N1,000,000 to the terrorists before their vehicles were released.

The Chairman of the Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union, Ishaq Kasai, disclosed this in a statement released in Kaduna on Sunday.

He said, “On Thursday, September 15, 2022, armed bandits kidnapped three locals at farms in Kurgin Gabas Community in the western part of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

“The bandits also enrouted the same Community on Friday, September 16, to steal a motorcycle (Bajaj model), killing the owner (Bala Balansi) instantly before going back to the forest.

“Kurgin Gabas is sharing border with Kamuku Forest Reserve which becomes the hideouts of armed bandits and a common route through which the bandits usually come out from their hideouts to carry out attacks in communities in the western part of Birnin-Gwari and in the neighbouring Rafi LGA of Niger State.

“BEPU acknowledges that the security level at Birnin-Gwari to Kaduna Highway has improved following the earlier visit by GOC of 1 Div Kaduna and subsequent mobilization of troops as well as occasional aerial surveillances along the road by security agencies. The Union also observes that, attacks are being carried out to some hideouts of the bandits particularly around Birnin-Gwari and Chikun adjoining forests.

“However, BEPU is deeply concerned that, Birnin-Gwari/Funtua Highway remains blocked by armed bandits where about 30 vehicles including big trucks are trapped and yet to be retrieved by owners; and many of the travellers that were abducted during the attack on September 1, 2022 are yet to be released.

“Another disturbing scenario is that, the bandits have carted away all the loads/goods contained in the trapped vehicles and people were forced by the armed bandits to pay huge amount of money ranging from N300,000 to N1,000,000 in order to bail and retrieve their trapped vehicles from the road. The charge disparity depends on the size and nature of the vehicles.”

The union appealed for mobilization of troops to ensure opening of Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road and for retrieving the trapped vehicles unconditionally.

“The Union believes that, opening of the road and sustained surveillance will help in addressing the problem of attacks on travellers  and in bringing permanent peace as well as enhancing business and other economic activities in Birnin-Gwari LGA,” the statement added.

ASUU Strike: Court Strikes Out NANS’ Suit Against ASUU, FG

The House of Representatives is to meet with the Academic Staff Union of University and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the lingering strike embarked upon by the union. لعبه الروليت

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Yahaya Danzaria, the Clerk of the House of Representatives on Monday in Abuja. تعليم البوكر

He said the meeting would take place on Tuesday at the National Assembly, the House of Representatives wing.

Danzaria said the meeting with ASUU and other critical stakeholders was geared towards finding a lasting solution to the lingering strike embarked upon by ASUU

According to him, the House of Representatives is deeply concerned about the renewed strike which seems to have defied all efforts made to find a solution.

He added that the House was concerned there had been no agreement reached between the Federal Government and the striking University lecturers.

The clerk noted that the House was more worried about the negative consequences of the strike on the future and quality of education of the teeming youths. روليت مباشر

He lamented that the youth had been kept at home for the past six months despite the intervention of the House and several well-meaning Nigerians over time to see that the matter was resolved.

“In the light of the foregoing, the House hereby requests another opportunity to come together with stakeholders and leadership of ASUU to seek an amicable resolution.”

He said that this was without prejudice to the fact that the matter was already in the Industrial Court.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that ASUU, among other unions in the education sector, began an ongoing strike on February 14, after the federal government failed to meet some of its demands including, the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.
