APC Postpones Campaign Kick-Off Till Further Notice

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has shifted the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for the Party’s 2023 candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The event earlier scheduled for Monday was postponed to Wednesday, September 28.

Bayo Onanuga, PCC Director of Media and Publicity, made the announcement in a statement Sunday night.

Members nominated to serve in the various directorates are to report at the campaign headquarters on the new date.

They are expected to participate in the special prayer sessions marking the commencement of the presidential election campaigns.

There would be a peace walk after the prayers; all nominees would be issued their letters of appointment on the same day.

“We know this is a call to serve our great party that will demand total commitment and sacrifice from all of us”, Onanuga said.

“It is the council’s strong belief that all members will work hard to deliver a resounding victory for our great party in the 2023 presidential election.”

The spokesman urged the support groups to continue their work and to formally register with the PCC immediately for proper harmonisation.

The yet-to-be-explained refusal of All Progressives Congress, APC to submit the name and details of the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency of Abia State, Rep. Sam Onuigbo as the duly elected candidate of the party for Abia Central Senatorial district may cost the party the senatorial seat.

Nigeria is heading to a major election early next year which will usher in new states and National Assembly members. A new president is also expected to emerge as the tenure of the incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari GCFR expires May 29, 2023.

This position was given a boost when President Buhari restated it during his farewell speech at UNGA77 where he declared that the august body will see a new President of Nigeria this next year during UNGA78

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the INEC had on Tuesday published the list of successful candidates for National Assembly race without APC having a candidate for Abia Central.

Emeka Atuma’s name was submitted by APC to INEC, even though he never took part in the primary election of the party for Abia Central which took place on 28th of June, 2022 at Chidiebere Park, Umuahia. Atuma bought form for Gubernatorial Election and contested with High Chief Ikechi Emenike. High Chief Emenike won the election while Atuma came second. How Atuma who contested for the Gubernatorial Primary and lost to High Chief Emenike miraculously jumped from the Gubernatorial contest to seize the ticket of a Senatorial Primary which we all witnessed and which he never participated in is still mystery to us.

The Abia Central Senatorial Primary Election was duly monitored by INEC officials. After a former Senator of the district, Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu withdrew from the race in her letter dated May 27, 2022 and addressed to the National Chairman of the APC and copied to the Director of Elections and Political Party Monitoring of the Independent National Elections Commission (INEC), the contest was between Chief Henry Ikoh and Hon Sam Onuigbo as Chief KC Ugboaja was ill and could not make it to the venue. The illness eventually claimed his (Ugboaja’s) life.

Chief Henry Ikechukwu Iko, now a federal Minister had tried his popularity among the delegates during the primary election, but was defeated by Hon. Onuigbo.

Under unexplained circumstances bordering on impunity, instead of the party, APC to submit the name of Hon. Onuigbo who duly won the election to INEC as its candidate for Abia Central, the party forwarded the name of Emeka Atuma who never purchased nomination form for the race and never participated in the election.

The federal lawmaker who says he has the pieces of evidence of materials used in conducting the June 28 primary election had challenged Chief Emeka Atuma to provide his evidence if he claims to have contested the election.

Atuma has instead said he won at a primary election conducted on the 7th of June, a claim that Onuigbo has said is false as such primary election never took place. Curiously, our investigation has revealed that the date claimed by Atuma coincided with the date Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected as the Presidential Candidate of the APC during its National Convention in Abuja.

Onuigbo had approached the Umuahia division of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike to bar INEC from publishing the name of Atuma as APC candidate for Abia Central.

Political watchers believe this was a missed opportunity for the APC which has not won Abia Central senatorial district election since it came into existence.

Sam Onuigbo enjoys a humongous support among the people of the constituency, having represented Ikwuano and Umuahia, a component of Abia Central at the House of Representatives for two terms. In fact, since 1999, he was the first House of Representatives Member to be re-elected in this powerful federal Constituency.

He is praised for offering quality leadership to the Constituency, a microcosm of what he could offer if elected into the senate.

The case is already before the court where Onuigbo is expected to reclaim his mandate. During the last court sitting, Honourable Justice Anyadike set Sept 30, 2022 as the date for definite hearing of the case.

A resident of Iree, Osun State, Muritala Afolabi, on Friday, sustained serious injuries after setting himself ablaze.

Muritala was, however, rescued by some people who heard his cry as fire burnt his body.

He was rushed to a private hospital in Iree, where he was admitted.

Speaking from his sick bed on Sunday, Muritala, a vulcaniser, said he decided to commit suicide having been subjected to emotional torture and frustration by his wife.

The 30-year-old artisan said he got married to his wife in July 2022 and since then, the woman had made life difficult by cursing and abusing him.

He said, “I just thought of ending it. That Friday, I went into a filing station, bought fuel and went to a forest behind Baptist High School, Iree, and set myself ablaze.

“I thought of what I was passing through and it made me to decide to end my life. Poverty and repeated curses of my wife made me to lose hope. I married the woman just in July this year.

“Some people heard me when fire was burning my body and rushed to the scene. They rescued me and brought me to hospital.”

When contacted by our correspondent on the phone, Muritala’s wife, Ifedolapo, denied cursing him.

She said, “I don’t know why he decided to kill himself. I am his wife. I am yet to have any child for him.”

Suspects Arrested For Defrauding, Raping 23-Year-Old Girl In Lagos

Two suspected fraudsters, Rotimi Fisher and Sherif Adebayo, have allegedly defrauded a 23-year-old girl in the Ipaja area of Lagos State.

The suspects also reportedly lured the victim to an uncompleted building on Majiyagbe Street, Ipaja, where Adebayo allegedly raped her.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim was on her way to a destination in Iyana Ipaja when Fisher approached her to help him locate an address.

The suspect, who reportedly presented himself as a foreign businessman to the victim, said he came to Nigeria to deliver goods to one of his clients at the address and to collect his outstanding payments.

A source said after Fisher approached people for help to no avail, the young girl offered to help, but upon checking the address, she did not know the location.

The source said, “But as the girl was trying to help Fisher, Adebayo suddenly came as a neutral person and offered to assist Fisher, whereas they were working together. Adebayo said the address was fake, but started motivating the girl on the need for them to help Fisher.

“Fisher, while lamenting being stranded, claimed that he was in possession of some papers that could be converted to plenty money but told Adebayo and the girl that he needed money to buy chemicals to convert the papers to money.

“Adebayo quickly dropped N60,000. The girl, who seemed convinced, gave Fisher her gold jewellery and N10,000 and also went to withdraw N65,000 from a nearby ATM and gave it to Fisher, who told Adebayo and the girl to take an oath not to reveal his secret to anyone.”

After taking the oath, it was learnt that Fisher gave them a location to meet him the next day.

When they got there, the Ogun State indigene reportedly showed them the sack containing the money and told Adebayo and the girl that the spirit responsible for converting the papers to money was asking for human blood as sacrifice.

“Fisher said to prevent both of them from dying, they needed to have sex. He also used the oath they took to threaten them. So, the girl out of fear of dying, followed them to an uncompleted building around 9pm on Majiyagbe Street, Ipaja, where Adebayo had sex with her,” the source said.

ABN TV gathered that after Fisher, 42, and Adebayo, 32, perpetrated the crime on September 3, 2022, the girl left the uncompleted building and proceeded to the Ipaja Police Station to report the case for investigation.

The policemen, led by the Ipaja Divisional Police Officer, CSP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, reportedly swung into action and in a two-week sting, arrested Fisher and Adebayo at their hideouts in Ipaja on September 16, 2022.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, saying they only manipulated the victim.

Adebayo said, “I only slept with her once and I used a contraceptive. I got the contraceptive at a mallam’s shop in the area. I used the contraceptive because I don’t really know the girl. I needed to protect myself.”

Narrating how he perpetrated the crime, Fisher said he met Adebayo through a friend, Bisi, who he claimed trained him on how to formulate stories to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

He said, “I have been asking a lot of people for the address. While some said they did not know the place, others advised me to go back to the country I came from, but I said I could not go back because of the goods that I brought.

“The girl got convinced when I said I was looking for people to help me count Nigerian money because I said I don’t know how to count it. Meanwhile, I and Adebayo had been talking to people but they did not answer us.

“It was when the girl was passing that I explained to her and she listened to me. So, Adebayo also pretended to be a passer-by and when he was passing, I signalled to him, and asked the girl to help me ask him for the location of the address and Adebayo said he had not heard of such an address before.”

Reacting, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspects had been charged to court.

ABN TV gathered that Fisher and Adebayo, who are both married with two children each, were arraigned at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court on three counts bordering on obtaining by false pretences, fraudulent conversion and sexual assault, offences punishable under sections 411, 314 (1), 287 and 136 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The men were later remanded in prison as the matter was adjourned till October 17, 2022, for further hearing.

Fraudsters have been deploying different tactics to swindle unsuspecting members of the public out of their valuables in different parts of Lagos State.

In August 2022, 35-year-old Olumide Womiloju was arraigned for fraud before Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka at a magistrate’s court sitting in the Yaba area of the state, for allegedly obtaining N5m from clients after promising to process their visas to travel overseas.

Also in August, a suspected fraudster, Emmanuel Rolland, was arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money to defraud unsuspecting residents in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Three Suspects Arrested Over Friend's Death During A Lagos Party

Three persons have been arrested by police in Lagos over the death of their friend, Michael Arigbabuwo, 21, at a party.

Ademola Adesina was celebrating his 23rd birthday at a party with his friends, Abdulqudus Salawudeen, 24, Damilare Adelana, 23, and Arigbabuwo, 21, in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu where Arigbabuwo passed out following alleged use of illicit drug overdose.

All those arrested over the incident are residents of Ikorodu, it was said.

The friends, it was gathered, were partying on Friday night when Arigbabuwo suddenly passed out.

He was alleged to have mixed and consumed two illicit drugs identified as Loud and Codeine shortly before he started gasping for air.

His friends rushed him to hospital where he was confirmed dead.

ABN TV gathered that his friends moved his body to Fawole area of Bayeku that night which raised suspicion among residents who notified the police.

Detectives stormed the area, secured the body, and arrested the three men.

Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said the investigation had commenced.

He said: “At a birthday party yesterday, a 21-year-old mixed two hard drugs for maximum effect. He began gasping. He was rushed to the hospital but died.

“Thinking of doing drugs? Have a rethink as nothing fruitful emanates from it.”

Police Nab Plateau Deadly Army Robbery Syndicates

Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team at the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB/IRT) of the Nigeria Police have arrested four persons suspected to be armed robbery kingpins terrorising Shendam area and other neighbouring communities in Plateau State.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The suspects were arrested by the security operatives following several complaints from residents about the activities of the gang in the locality.

They include Mij Yawa Buba ‘m’ 36, Saidu Manu Saleh ‘m’ 30, Saleh Musa ‘m’ 20, and Ibrahim Deri ‘m’ 27 – all natives of Shendam in Plateau State.

Saleh Musa was the key suspect nabbed by the police operatives in a raid through actionable intelligence information that he intended to buy an AK47 rifle in the town.

When interrogated by the police on why he intended to buy the rifle, he named Ibrahim (alias Alhaji) as one of the gang members in their syndicate which was responsible for major robbery and kidnapping operations.

The investigation by the police team also led to the arrest of Miji Yawa Buba – a resident of Angwar Yargam in the same community where the rifle was found and recovered by the security operatives.

Manu Saidu, in his confessional statement, said he conspired with some of his cousins namely Bareli Bello, Hussaini Bello, Abdo Baleri, Isa Baleri and Ibrahim Baleri, as well as his two younger brothers Yuguda Saidu and Yahaya Saidu (now late), to buy an AK47 rifle to protect their cattle.

He added that they bought the rifle from one Baba Mallam at Yelwa for N300,000 while the weapon was usually kept at the house of Alhaji Baleri.

On his part, Saleh Saidu confessed that it was Ibrahim Deri who asked him to get 60-round ammunition for the rifle at Shendam, saying they had a good relationship.

He said he had participated in the armed robbery at a provision store owned by one Alhaji Muntari in Shendam and robbed him of N200,000, but denied involvement in any kidnapping.

From intelligence gathered, the gang was also alleged to have robbed many people and pharmacy outlets in the town, during which a pharmacist identified as Ibrahim Babawuro in Shendam community sustained gunshot wounds.

One of the suspects claimed he only pulled the trigger to test the gun. He, however, denied knowledge of the gang leader Saleh.

However, in his statement, he told the police team that he was a herder and owned a herd of 30 cows.

Among the items recovered from the crime scene included one AK47 assault rifle and some assorted ammunition.

Man 75, Others Arrested With Hard Drugs

A 75-year-old grandpa, Usman Bokina Bajama (alias Clemen) tops the list of 22 suspects arrested in operations across seven states by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), during which over one million capsules of banned new psychoactive substances were seized.

In a statement on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi, disclosed that one million one thousand three hundred and eighty-seven (1,001,387) bottles/capsules of banned the psychoactive substance, Akuskura and tramadol as well as 2,536 kilograms of cannabis were taken hold of.

He added that over 10 hectares of farms where these substances were being cultivated have been destroyed in Edo and Adamawa.

The septuagenarian was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday 20th September at Anguwan Sate, Mararraban Tola, Mayo Belwa council area of Adamawa where he had a cannabis plantation from where 49kg of the illicit substance was recovered.

Meanwhile, at least 19,878 bottles of the banned new psychoactive substance in Kwara, Akuskura were intercepted by NDLEA operatives along Ilorin-Jebba highway on Wednesday 21st September, and two suspects: Oladokun Oluwaseun, 49, and Ibrahim Jimoh,27, arrested.

They claimed the consignment packed in 35 jumbo sacks was loaded in Ibadan, Oyo state, and meant for distribution in Jos, Plateau state. Earlier, two suspects: Ukoro Ifeanyi, 46, and Idowu Toyosi, 20, were arrested with 2,290 capsules of tramadol and 100 bottles of codeine-based syrup at Mararaba park, Ilorin.

According to the NDLEA spokesman, the drugs were brought in from Onitsha, Anambra state

In a similar vein, NDLEA operatives in Lagos while acting on credible intelligence intercepted a Volvo truck loaded with 2,146 kilograms of cannabis at Sangotedo area of Ajah.

Three suspects, Abdulazeez Rasheed; Afeez Raheem, and Moshood Suleiman, were arrested.

At least, 979,119 capsules of expired pregabalin weighing 733kg were recovered from Musbahu Ya’u, 28, and five others at Dansarai area of Kano, while in Enugu, 197.8kg cannabis was recovered in a store at new market, Enugu on Tuesday 20th Sept.

In the same vein, 117.7kg of the psychoactive substance was intercepted along the Okene-Abuja expressway in a truck coming from Lagos to Abuja

Furthermore, the statement disclosed that in Edo State, six cannabis farmers were arrested when NDLEA operatives stormed their farms at Chigbite, Utese forest in Ovia North East LGA and Ekudo forest, Uhunmonde LGA, where over 10 hectares of cannabis plantation were destroyed and more than 193kg of the processed illicit substance seized.

Those arrested include: David Hanson; Ufuoma Progress; Marvelous Armstrong; Marvelous Efe; Joshua Abubakar and Elijah Abubakar.

In another development, anti-narcotic officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos have arrested two freight agents over attempts to smuggle 26.20kg cannabis concealed in cereal packs through the SAHCO shed for export to Dubai, UAE. The consignment was abandoned at the shed before the airport security transferred it to NDLEA.

Further investigation by the agency led to the arrest of Olatunbosun Damilola Abimbola, 34, who works at Ashadox Logistics Services, a cargo company on Friday 23rd Sept.

He confessed to the crime but stated that he acted on the instructions of his Managing Director, Oloyede Shakiru Abiola, who was promptly arrested. The 40-year-old indigene of Ibadan West Local Government Area of Oyo State stated that due to the strict security measures put in place by the NDLEA, he was forced to abandon the cargo to avoid being detected.hairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the officers and men of Adamawa, Kwara, Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Kogi, Edo, and the MMIA Commands for their resilience.

Gen Marwa charged them and others across the country to remain vigilant and committed to the collective goal of saving Nigeria from the drug scourge.

Nigeria Shall have a Greater Future, Says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) says he foresees a better future for Nigeria, as the nation prepares to celebrate its 62nd independence anniversary.

Osinbajo insisted that the country would not be destroyed by the myriads of challenges confronting it.

He spoke during the Independence Anniversary Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja on Sunday with the theme: ‘Those Who Wait on the Lord Shall Inherit the Land’.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, heads of security agencies, other top government officials, church leaders, politicians, diplomats, community leaders, women leaders and youth leaders were among those who graced the event.

Referencing the Book of Deuteronomy 33:25, which reads ‘As your days so shall your strength be’ the VP said, “The future of Nigeria will be far more glorious, more peaceful than our past. And so it shall be for you to every year you will be happier. Every year will be more glorious, more prosperous and more peaceful.

“We are confident that God who owns the heavens will fulfil his promises concerning this nation despite the present challenges.”

Earlier, the President, of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in his sermon titled, ‘The Righteous Shall Rule the Land’ cautioned believers against engaging in acts that will destroy the fortunes and prospects of the nation.

According to him, “We must be guided by the scriptures in all situations. We must continue to speak up and stand up against injustice and work for peace in a constructive way so that we shall enjoy the pasture of the land.

“We must give leadership to peaceful resolution of these issues that tend to further polarize us.

“Rumour-mongering and hate speech will not help. This is the time Christians must show spiritual maturity, integrity and dignity in engagement. We shall not give up.”

Okoh described the year 2023 as the year of Nigeria’s test as a nation; stressing that rather than take up arms to kill each other and terrify innocent Nigerians, adults in the nation should take up their voters’ cards and go to the polls.

He charged, “Those who already have their valid voter’s card should ensure that they don’t misplace it or expose it to where it could be stolen or destroyed. Those who have registered and have not received their PVCs should endeavour to get them and keep them. If you have registered but found it difficult to get your PVC, report to your church leaders or better still to the office of the Christian Association of Nigeria nearest to you in your state.

“Let me counsel that we must resist any threat (strong or subtle) in whichever form to stop us from going out to vote on the day of elections.

“We should have learnt our lessons to know that politicians who presented some inducement to voters, especially on the polling day were not really interested in the welfare of the people because they disappeared and made themselves unreachable and unavailable to those who elected them after they had been elected.”

The CAN president urged Nigerians to look out for politicians who are genuine and who are sincere to provide the basics that will be the catalyst for economic growth and development.

“I do not believe that all Nigerian politicians are the same – there are still those that God had prepared for this time. Open your eyes and listen, you will find them,” he added.

He urged Nigerian youths not to reduce themselves to body shields to politicians that have no interest in their future; adding that neither should they allow themselves to be used as pawns on the chessboard of the reckless political game.

“The Youth should not allow certain unscrupulous persons to use them to destroy their own future.

“At the same time, I call on the Federal government to do all that is necessary so that most of these youths will go back to the universities and be engaged with their studies.

“I urge the government at all levels to provide basic infrastructure – security, good roads, constant electricity supply and basic health care for citizens and other residents in Nigeria.

“Above all, let us not be weary in praying to our Lord to rescue Nigeria from the hands of wicked people,” he explained.

In his remarks, the SGF Boss Mustapha thanked those present at the occasion and expressed optimism that Nigerians will gather again for the swearing-in of a new president for the country after peaceful elections in 2023.
