Army Arrests Child Trafficking Syndicates In Imo

Officers of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze have arrested a suspected child trafficker, Joy Duru from Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State.

The suspect allegedly specialises in stealing children from Imo State and sells to her accomplices in Rivers State for a huge sum of money.

Parading several suspects at the headquarters of the 34 artillery brigade Obinze in Imo State, the Brigade Commander, Sani Suleiman said the suspects were arrested after several months of intelligence gathering.

He stated that the suspect usually carries out her illegal business in the guise of operating an orphanage home, adding that his troop also rescued a 23-year-old victim from the suspect, who is nine months pregnant.

Recovered from the suspect were forms said to have been gotten from teenage girls who get pregnant with the aim of selling the children upon delivery.

The Commander explained that efforts were ongoing to trace a suspected buyer of a two-week-old baby in Rivers State.

“We saw forms that indicated that she receives children from teenagers who have unwanted pregnancies or those who didn’t know what to do or are in need of money and bring in young men to impregnate them. She nurses them until they are put to bed, she takes the children,” he said.

“One of them is here with us. This girl is about 23 years old and is nine months pregnant and will deliver any moment from now. We got this girl from her and she has kept her waiting for her to deliver.

“We also discovered a two-week-old child. She is claiming that a woman brought her and we have made efforts to know who the mother is. She also confirmed to us that she has sold a two-year-old baby to the Amadi family. We are on the trail of the family and they abandoned their homes when our troops went there so that we can complete the (investigation).”

The army consequently handed over the suspects and some recovered children to the National Agency For the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

Meanwhile, the State Commander of NAPTIP, Ernest Ogbu, said the suspects will be charged to court and necessary actions will be taken while efforts will Be made to reunite the recovered children with their families.

Retired Soldiers Storm Ministry Of Defence, Protest Unpaid Allowances

Military veterans under the aegis of the Retired Members of Nigerian Armed Forces and the Coalition of Concerned Military Veterans, staged the third phase of their protests over the non-payment of their Security Debarment Allowance, among others, at the Ministry of Defence, in Abuja on Monday.

The protesters pitched a tent and blocked access to the Ministry of Defence located at Ship House on Olusegun Obasanjo Way in the country’s capital city.

The retired military men had in January this year, picketed the ministries of finance, defence, and the National Assembly earlier in, in pursuit of the same demand.

The National Secretary, REMENAF, Ambassador Roy Okhidievbie, who spoke to our correspondent during Monday’s protest, noted that the demonstration was to demand the payment of their security debarment allowance owed them by the Federal Government, adding that the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd.) had refused to disburse the allowances despite approval by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) regime.

Okhidievbie said, “We have had meetings with the Defence Minister, Magashi, but he appears to be headstrong, heartless, and unperturbed concerning the grievances of retired military officers, as he never paid nor showed any interest or concern to pay these allowances, especially the Security Debarment Allowance.

“Interestingly, President Buhari-led regime has approved the payment of this allowance, but Magashi have refused to make disbursements.”

Also, the spokesperson for the CVV, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, told our correspondent that Monday’s protest was focused on the non-payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, adding that they were determined to sleep over at the entrance of the Ministry of Defence.

Durowaiye-Herberts said, “We’re here, alongside our wives and children, and the widows of late military personnel and veterans who died in service, some of whom died fighting Boko Haram terrorists.

“We’ll be sleeping over at this place until the Minister of Defence, Magashi accede to our demands.”

A young woman, Anna Nanven, whose husband, a Corporal, was killed by Boko Haram terrorists during an attack on a military barracks in Borno State, 2015, told our correspondent that she had only received one allowance disbursement since her husband’s demise.

Mrs Nanven said, “My husband was a young man, a Corporal that was killed by Boko Haram terrorists during an attack on the barracks where he worked.

“I now live with his parents, and I bore five kids, three females and two males for him until his demise. The children are aged, 22, 20, 18, 15, and seven years olds, and the two eldest, both girls, that are done with High School can’t afford going to the University because I can’t afford their school fee.

“I am pleading that the President, the Minister of Defence, and Nigerian citizens come to our aid. I and my five children are suffering and living in poverty because I can’t afford starting a business, and I have no job.”

60,000 Nigerian Teachers To Break Guinness World Record

The Nigerian Union of Teachers on Monday noted that it would continue to contribute to the nation’s building.

The union made this known through its president, Titus Amba, during the 2022 World Teachers Day press briefing held at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

While briefing the press, Amba thanked the regime of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) over activities which he said have continued to give teachers “hope”.

“I am highly delighted to be part of this Ministerial Press Briefing which marks the commencement of activities lined up for the observance of the 2022 World Teachers’ Day.

“First and foremost, I bring greetings from the National Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the entire teachers of Nigeria. I wish to especially thank His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR for sustaining the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award which has helped to give hope to teachers and promote the dignity of the teaching profession.

Officer Killed As Gunmen Attack Police Station In Imo (VIDEO)

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Ahmed Ammani, on Sunday vowed to rid the state of unrepentant criminals disturbing its peace.

Ammani said this after he embarked on a visibility patrol of some major highways and locations in the state, which included: Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka and Enugu-Onitsha Highways, as well as Oji-River and Inyi communities in Oji River Local Government Area.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.

The CP noted that the visibility patrol was in line with the command’s avowed commitment to ensure the security and safety of citizens, especially of road users, anywhere in the state.

According to him, the visibility patrol tour is aimed at building the confidence of citizens and reassuring them of their security and safety on all roads in the state.

He said: “I reassure Enugu State residents of the command’s resolve to ensure maximum public security and safety.

“I solicit citizens’ continued support and cooperation in terms of information sharing and being conscious of their environment while promptly reporting any suspected abnormality.”

The commissioner was joined in the visibility patrol tour by DCP Olasoji Akinbayo (Deputy Commissioner Operations) and ACP Princewill  Ijeoma (Commanding Officer, 3 Police Mobile Force, Enugu).

Others were CSP Ogbonna Nwota (Commanding Officer, Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 21, Enugu) and CSP Mairiga Ibrahim (Second-in-Command, 76 Police Mobile Force, Nsukka),  among other senior police officers. (NAN).

The Super Eagles are expected to arrive in Oran on Monday (today) ahead of their second friendly against the Desert Foxes of Algeria.

Jose Peseiro’s side held their last training session in Constantine on Sunday night.

The West Africans will take on Algeria at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium, Oran on Tuesday night.

The three-time African champions were held to a 2-2 draw by Algeria’s home-based side last Friday at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium, Constantine.

The team has been depleted with injuries to some key stars including the assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, and midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi leaving camp.

The Super Eagles have lost their last two games against Djamel Belmadi’s side.

The game will kick off at 8 pm Nigeria time.

Udom Ekpoudom, a former deputy Inspector General of Police and senatorial aspirant for the Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene) district have declared that he will appeal the two judgments which declared Senator Godswill Akpabio the All Progressives Congress candidate for the senatorial seat.

Recall that the former DIG had earlier been declared the winner of the party’s primary conducted on May 28, 2022, by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state.

But a re-run primary conducted on June 9, 2022, at the Godswill Akpabio Empowerment Centre, Ikot Ekpene, declared the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs the candidate for the senatorial seat, pushing the retired DIG to challenge Akpabio’s declaration in court.

However, the Federal High Court presided by Justice Emeka Nwite, in Abuja, on September 15, 2022, dismissed the lawsuit against INEC and the APC for lacking in merit. This was followed by a similar one by Justice Donatus Okorowo’s judgment on September 23, 2022.

A statement by the Director-General of Ekpoudom Campaign Organisation, Uwem Udoma, titled, “Judgment on Akwa Ibom North-West APC senatorial ticket: Our position”, made available to our correspondent on Sunday said all constitutional means would be explored to retrieve the mandate which had earlier been given to Ekpoudom by his people during the primary.

“By the law, we have instructed our legal team to promptly appeal both Justice Nwite’s judgment (FHC/ABJ/CS/1011/2022) of September 15, 2022, and Justice Okorowo’s judgment (FHC/ABJ/CS/1000/2022) of September 23, 2022.”

“Consequently, we hereby urge all members of the Campaign Organisation and the APC supporters in the senatorial district to remain calm and resolute as notwithstanding, with this ‘temporal setback’, we shall explore all legal and constitutional means to ensure that the mandate entrusted to Ekpoudom is legally protected.

“Most importantly, we hereby assure our teaming APC supporters and indeed the good people of Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district that come 2023, Abak Federal Constituency will produce the next senator.”

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo says Nigeria is “not without hope”, in spite of its myriads of challenges, as the country marks the 62nd independence anniversary on Oct 1.

Uzodimma said this on Sunday at the Maria Assumpta Catholic Cathedral Owerri during a special Church service to mark the 62nd Independence Anniversary of Nigeria.

The governor called for proactive measures to tackle the nation’s challenges, noting that identifying the cause of a problem was the first step in solving the problem.

He identified the challenges to include poor leadership, insecurity, poverty, and unemployment and called for concerted efforts by Nigerians to nip them in the bud.

”We must take time to study how countries overcame their challenges and deplore proactive approaches in confronting the challenges of our time.

”We must begin to do things differently, listen to the government of the day, find out if her story is good; if yes, embrace it for the interest of our state and the country at large because we have no other place to go.

”How many of us are interested in how Nigeria can be better, and if yes what have we done in that direction? All hands must be on deck, each of us should contribute his quota to make our country a better place to live,” he said.

In his homily, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, thanked God for the numerous blessings He endowed Nigeria with as a nation as well as the talents and human endowments that were given to her leaders.

He said that the Mass was not only to mark the 62nd independence anniversary of Nigeria but also to remember the founding fathers who paid the supreme price to make Nigeria a nation.

Ugorji, therefore, called for a change of heart on the part of Nigerians, leaders and followers alike, to enable the country to move away from needless killings, corruption, fraud, kidnapping, and selfishness, and to embrace the security of lives and property.

”We look forward to celebrating a country where peace and unity will dominate the entire nation and the citizens will be happy.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has assured residents of Anambra state that they will receive immediate assistance.

Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Soludo’s Chief of Staff, said this while on a physical tour of flood-ravaged areas to assess the challenges and extent of the damage.

The chief of staff reported that the governor ordered the visit in response to an alarm raised by locals. He was joined by Sir Paul Odenigbo, the executive secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Former Ogbaru Chairman Mr. Arinze Awogu pleaded with the Federal and Anambra governments to save the region from flooding.

Ezeajughi, who was alarmed by the rising water levels, assured that the state government would liaise with the Federal Government to ensure the quick evacuation of people and their property.

According to him, everything that needs to be done will be done quickly too, to ameliorate the sufferings of the affected people, as well as safeguard lives and property.

Speaking during the visit, Awogu who is the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance for Ogbaru Federal Constituency, thanked Soludo for his concern for the welfare of the people of the area.

He expressed hope that the governor would make good on his promise to urgently intervene and called on the National Emergency Management Agency to immediately send relief materials to complement the efforts of the state.

“For about two decades now, Ogbaru people have lost billions of naira and human lives due to the yearly flooding, so we want all hands to be on deck to checkmate the ugly menace which is threatening the livelihood and existence of Ogbaru.

“What you have seen is a tip of an iceberg, if nothing tangible and drastic is done urgently, Ogbaru Council Area and other riverine communities in the state may face extinction due to continuous flooding over the years,” he said.

Other officials who joined the team were Mr. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, Commissioner for Environment, and Mr. Nnamdi Esimai, the Coordinator of Local Emergency Management Committee.
