The Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, on Monday justified its decision to back the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, for the 2023 elections.

The group’s leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, made its position known at a press conference in Lagos.

Justifying the decision, Adebanjo said the group would not compromise the principle of justice, equity and inclusiveness because the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is a Yoruba man.

He said, “The South-West has produced a President and currently sits as Vice President; the South-South has spent a total of six years in the Presidency, but the Igbo people of the South-East have never tasted presidency in Nigeria, and now that the power is due back in the South, equity demands that it be ceded to the Igbo.

“We cannot continue to demand that the Igbo people remain in Nigeria while we, at the same time, continue to brutally marginalise and exclude them from the power dynamics.

“Peter Obi is the person of Igbo extraction that Afenifere has decided to support and back; he is the man we trust to restructure the country back to federalism on the assumption of office.

“We will not compromise this principle of justice, equity and inclusiveness because one of our own, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is a frontline candidate. It is on this same principle we condemn the Peoples Democratic Party for sponsoring Atiku Abubakar, a Northern Fulani Muslim to succeed General Muhammadu Buhari another Fulani Muslim.”

However, in his reaction, the APC spokesperson, Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, accused Adebanjo of promoting his agenda as the position of the pan-Yoruba group.

Keyamo told The PUNCH (not ABN TV) on Monday that he stood by an earlier statement released by the council’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga.

He said, “We stand by the statement issued yesterday (Sunday) by our campaign council media director. Afenifere is not the mouthpiece of the Yoruba. The release comprehensively addressed the matter.

“The issue is that the Afenifere in question is just Pa Adebanjo trying to project his personal bias against Asiwaju. He is not pursuing any pan-Yoruba act of patriotism as claimed. No, he is not.

“Besides, his view is not the position of the entire Afenifere. He is just a factional member of the group. We are aware that there was no time Afenifere met to take such a decision.”

Onanuga had, in an earlier statement, described Adebanjo’s endorsement of Obi as a personal decision.

While admitting that he is free to support anyone he likes in furtherance of his democratic right, the media director stated that the elder statesman does not speak for the Yorubas.

Four aggrieved national Assembly candidates contesting 2023 elections on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Osun State, on Monday, said their decision to back the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was an indication of NNPP’s collapsed structure in the state.

This was contained in a press release signed by the leader of the group, Clement Bamigbola, in reaction to the statement credited to the state caretaker chairman of the party, Abdusalam Abiola, who had earlier alleged that the four candidates that declared support for Tinubu, were like liabilities that would not be missed by the NNPP.

It would be recalled that four NNPP candidates; Clement Bamigbola, Osun Central Senatorial, Bolaji Akinyode, Osun West Senatorial, Olalekan Fabayo, and Oluwaseyi Ajayi of Boluwaduro/Ifedayo/Ila, and Ijesa South Federal Constituencies respectively, had dumped NNPP presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso for Tinubu, citing lack of transparency in the running of their party at the national level.

The release by the aggrieved candidates further read in parts, “Our decision to support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections serves as evidence of the Osun NNPP’s imminent collapse.

“It is unfortunate to see the so-called acting chairman referring to the party candidates as irrelevant members. It shows the man in question knows nothing about politics. As at today, NNPP is dead in Osun state.”

Dino Melaye, the spokesperson, Peoples Democratic People, PDP, Presidential Campaign Management Committee, has rubbished the one million-man march for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, over the weekend in Abuja.

According to him, the so-called Obi supporters were just hungry Nigerians paid N1000-N2000 and assembled from all parts of Abuja and Nigerians, in general, to stand to say they were Obi-dients.

Melaye insisted that the forthcoming presidential election is between the presidential candidate of the PDP and the others, adding that Peter Obi’s presence at the recently concluded governorship election in Osun State did not make his party a challenger.

Ondo Govt Debunks Report Of Punishing Teachers Who Enrol Children In Private Schools

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, yesterday, insisted that state security outfits in the country, backed by law must have access to sophisticated weapons to combat insecurity.

Akeredolu said this during the Passing-Out Parade of Courses 3 and 4 of the State Amotekun Corps in Akure.

His words: “State Security outfits backed by law whether in Western Nigeria, Katsina, Borno, Benue or any Northern state must have access to the same sophisticated weapons that the marauders have. Anything else is a contradiction in terms.

“It is evident that the current internal security framework in the country is ineffectual. The response of the subnationals by setting up their outfits is welcome, necessary, and has become indispensable.

“Everyone must be given the same access to outgun the criminals. Without uniformity nationwide, the threat to the cohesion of the state will continue.

“The fight back against marauders committing crimes against humanity must allow subnational and regional authorities to have the tools, the most sophisticated weapons available which the marauders already have in abundance.

“Without providing the sub-national security forces to be a counter-balancing force we have a crisis which strikes at the heart of the conception and the definition of the state itself.”

Speaking on the training, the Ondo State governor said: “Those passing out have undergone rigorous training at great expense to the state. The training will not end here it will be continuous.

“However, no amount of training will mask the debilitation of fighting with one arm tied against implacable foes.

“Amotekun must, therefore, be armed and will be armed and be backed by law. Otherwise, the training will be inadequate and we will be placing the lives of these great patriots in danger.

“The key guiding principles which you must adhere to at all times include Spartan discipline, zero-tolerance to bribery and abuse of power, prompt response to distress calls and display of professionalism in the discharge of your duties. No form of misconduct shall be tolerated.”

A chieftain of the Labour Party and political economist, Pat Utomi, has challenged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, to go for a medical checkup and make the result public.

He claimed that Tinubu is unfit.

Prof Utomi threw the challenge on Monday while answering questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today, arguing that next year’s election is about the lives of Nigerians.

He maintained that there were obvious signs to show that Tinubu is unfit for the post of a president.

“Our country has suffered so much from having ailing leaders. That was why the Vice President stepped up.

“American Presidents go through medicals that are made public. Let him (Tinubu) go for medicals with Nigerian doctors up in the hospital and make it public.

“It is the life of millions of people that we are dealing with”, Utomi added.

The renowned economist also noted that the ruling party, the APC, made a mistake by not fielding another candidate in the person of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, adding that he would have been a better candidate.

“The Vice President (Yemi) would have been a fit person. You can see he (Tinubu) is ailing. Common, let’s not kill ourselves, let’s be honest”, he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has postponed the kick-off of its campaigns earlier slated for Wednesday.

Director-General, of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong disclosed this in a statement Tuesday.

According to him, the adjustment of the timetable and schedule of activities is in order to accommodate growing interests shown by various political tendencies in being part of the campaign council.

According to him, a new date for the kick-off would be announced soon.

The statement reads; “Recall that we had earlier earmarked a peace walk and prayers for Wednesday, September 28, 2022, to officially kick-off our campaigns for the 2023 Presidential Elections. We had also announced that the members of the Campaign Council report at the Campaign Headquarters on that day to collect their letters of appointment.

“However, due to the expansion of the list to accommodate more stakeholders and interests within the APC family, we have decided to adjust the timetable of these activities in order to ensure everyone is on board before activities officially commence. Consequently, the activities earlier announced for the 28th of September will no longer hold

“As the ruling and most attractive party in Nigeria, we understand the sacrifices and understanding of our teeming members who are more than willing to volunteer themselves for this great task ahead. It also shows the enormous love that the party members have for our candidates

“A new date and timetable of events will be announced soon”.

The Federal Government (FG) on Monday withdrew its earlier directive asking the management of Vice-Chancellors in universities “to ensure that the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) resume and commence lectures immediately.”

This was contained in a letter signed by the Director, Finance, and Accounts of National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Abubakar Rasheed, in Abuja.

Recall that the Federal Government had earlier today ordered Vice-Chancellors in universities to re-open schools and to allow students to resume lectures.

The FG had asked the pro chancellors and vice-chancellors to ensure that the striking lecturers resume and commence lectures immediately.

The FG’s directive had caused confusion for the university management as the vice-chancellors were unsure of how to go about the decision.

But the new letter by the National Universities Commission (NUC), which was addressed to the pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors of the federal universities is titled; “Withdrawal of Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 Dated 23rd September 2022.”

The new letter referenced NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136 and dated 26 September, partly read; “I have been directed to withdraw the National Universities Commission (NUC) circular Ref, NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 and dated 23rd September 2022 on the above subject. Consequently, the said Circular stands withdrawn.

“All Pro-Chancellors and Chairmen of Governing Councils, as well as Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities, are to please note. Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.”

The letter, however, did not give reasons for the withdrawal.

Ikpeazu Sympathises With Ariaria Market Traders Over Flood, Orders Reconstruction

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has expressed his sympathy to the traders of Ariaria market over the recent flood cases recorded in the market.

The governor blamed “torrential rains of the past three days” as being responsible for the flooding of the market, saying the state government lacks power to prevail on rains not to fall in the markets.

In a statement on Monday, the governor through the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief John Okiyi Kalu directed the developer of the market, Blessed Henken International Company Limited to commence excavation and construction of a 2-metre width culvert across Faulks Road from A-line to channel storm water from the construction area to Waterside River in Aba through Faulks/Osusu Road drainage way.

This directive which came after a meeting with the traders and stakeholders is to “conclusively deal with the perennial flooding challenges experienced by traders since inception of the market” the government says.

According to the state government, the extension of the ongoing reconstruction project at Omuma Road, Aba, to include connection of the wide drains to the Ifeobara area to provide alternative channel for gradient flow of storm water to the natural collection points at waterside river.

The statement reads in part, “Market committee, project monitoring team and ministry of trade and investment officials to embark on the immediate assessment and evaluation of the extent of damage done to goods of affected traders by the rainfalls with a view to recommending appropriate financial and other support from the government to them.

“Two years tax waiver to all the traders affected by the ongoing remodeling of A-line in Airiaria International Market including exemption from payment of revenues collected by state and local government agents in the market.

“While the construction of high quality shop structures in A-line will continue, we have mobilized needed resources to ensure that as soon as the rains abate construction of A-line road and associated drains will commence and conclude within the coming dry season window. We therefore wish to seek the continuing partnership, support and understanding of our traders and visitors to the market for the successful execution of this phase of the project which will deliver modern market infrastructure to generations of traders.

“Politicians and their agents attempting to instigate crisis in the market are advised in their own interests to desist from such course as the government has directed security agents to deal decisively with trouble makers and their sponsors. We have also received information on plots by politically sponsored hoodlums to hide behind this nature induced challenges to unleash destruction and looting of goods belonging to innocent traders in the market.

“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has therefore directed Security agents in the state to ensure protection of the market and the traders as well as deal decisively with trouble makers and their sponsors.”

Alleged Corruption: Olisa Metuh Still Has Case A Case To Answer — EFCC

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reacted to some reports in the media, alleging that, the Federal High Court, FHC, sitting in Abuja, on Monday, September 26, 2022, “ struck out a suit filed by the Commission against former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh, for retrial.

The EFCC says there is no truth in those reports, stating that Metuh’s case is presently pending before the Supreme Court, arising from the appeal by the Commission.

In a statement on Monday, the commission through its Head Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren explained that the pending case also arises from Metuh’s cross appeal, upon the judgment of the Court of Appeal which nullified the judgment of the trial court on alleged grounds of bias.

“There is, therefore, no pending case before the Federal High Court to warrant striking out of the same.

“It bears reiterating that, the EFCC, has no fresh application for retrial of Metuh before the court. There can be no striking out of a suit that was not initiated or filed before the court.

“Any report of striking out of a suit filed by the EFCC on Metuh, is a gross misrepresentation of the status of the case and the public is enjoined to ignore such reports.

“The EFCC is awaiting the judgment of the apex court, against the discharge of Metuh, by the Court of Appeal, in the N400 million money laundering charges instituted against him.

“The Commission will do nothing to abuse processes of the court, as it remains committed to total respect for the rule of law,” the commission said.
