The presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Mr. Atiku Abubakar has said his mission in the race is to rescue, and rebuild Nigeria.

He called for unity of purpose, coming together to fight and win all the elections slated for next year. “It is my fervent prayer and hopes that every man and woman of goodwill will join hands with us to help rescue, rebuild and reposition our beloved country, Nigeria,” Atiku said while addressing members of the PDP presidential campaign council shortly after their inauguration in Abuja on Wednesday.

Atiku, a former Vice-President of the country accused the ruling APC government of leading the country into a mess, promising that his era as a president will usher in a new dawn for the west African country with an estimated population of 200 million, confronted with security challenges arising from the activities of Islamist Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, depleting living standards, separatist agitation and uncontrolled deprecation of Naira, the local currency.

Mr. Abubakar accused the President Muhammadu Buhari regime of presiding over a country with “a frightening descent into anarchy”.

“The current government has failed at the very essence of what makes a government — the security of lives and property of citizens, our school is in shambles, roads have stagnated and our people are facing massive existential challenges daily, and can barely make ends meet.

“Our nation is in disarray, the fabric of unity that binds our country is today being torn apart by mutual distrust, ethnic and sectarian strife, and we are more disunited than we have ever been in our history, including even when we fought a civil war.

“Our educational system is comatose, nothing more underscores this than the twin embarrassing facts of the number of children that are currently out of school — 20 million according to the UNESCO.

“And the length of time university students have been kept out of their classrooms this year as a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU strike,” Mr. Abubakar said.

Umbrella body of lecturers in Nigeria’s public universities have been on strike since February over unresolved issues with the government bordering on education funding, the autonomy of the universities, and unfulfilled promises to enhance their welfare in the past.

This according to Mr. Abubakar is a willing tool for under-development, accusing the government of not being suitable to offer solutions to the challenges of the 21st-century economy that works for everyone

“We have a plan to address these issues and arrest the drift of our nation,” he assured.

Nigerians are expected to go to polls next year in a major election that has two other front liners as presidential hopefuls — Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos and the candidate of APC, and Mr. Peter Obi, also a former governor of Anambra and candidate of Labour Party.

The incumbent APC government has been condemned for failure to address skyrocketing poverty, burgeoning security concerns, divisiveness along the ethnic and religious lines, inflation, and others.

Interpol Systems Consultant and security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said politicians who have been campaigning before the official commencement of campaigns as stipulated in the Electoral Act (2022) as amended have violated the constitution and should be sanctioned.

He said those who have been campaigning at burial ceremonies, new yam festivals, weddings, churches, and mosques before the September 28 official commencement violated the constitution.

Sir Udensi who spoke on Wednesday at his weekly programme, Open Parliament on ABN TV and Family Love said the political parties and their candidates have violated sections 94 and 96 of the Electoral Act which stipulates that no political party should start campaigns before the whistle is blown.

The INEC had set Wednesday, September 28 for the commencement of campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to Sir Udensi, there were inactions on the side of most political parties who did not provide proper guidelines for their candidates, saying it is unethical.

“In fact, most of the rallies are in churches and mosques, and we saw the clips of ones that were done at the palaces of traditional rulers, women meetings and gatherings, some were even done in weddings, and also recently we saw the ones that were going on in new yam festivals around the South East region, even in burials.

“They also violated section 92 where it has to do with designated worship places, especially sub-section 3 that specifically says places designated for religious worship, police stations, and all public offices, shall not be used for political activities,” he said.

He said a meeting of stakeholders at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka which he attended recently x-rayed things considered ethical and unethical that the political parties and their candidates have done.

Sir Udensi, a chieftain of APGA, therefore, called for proper punitive measures to be taken against the political parties and their candidates who continue to undermine the Electoral Act

He called on citizens to at all times learn to obey the laws of the land, wondering why INEC lacks the power to impose sanctions on erring political parties and their candidates.

Yobe North: Machina Hails Court Judgement As Lawan Says He'll Not Appeal

The about four-month controversial All Progressives Congress primary election of the Yobe North Senatorial District has been put to rest after the Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, declared Bashir Machina as the rightfully elected candidate.

The presiding judge, Justice Fadimatu Murtala, pronounced the ruling on Wednesday.

For months, Machina and Senate President Ahmad Lawan who is representing Yobe North in the upper chamber have been at loggerheads over the ticket won by the former at the primary held on June 9, 2022.

Lawan had contested the presidential primary of the ruling party at about the same time as the senatorial primary won by Machina. The Senate president, however, lost to Bola Tinubu, a development that forced him to jostle for the senatorial ticket but Machina insisted that he won’t step down.

Lawan has been in the National Assembly as a federal lawmaker for 23 unbroken years.

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar Atiku has said despite the hardship under the All Progressives Congress, APC-led President Muhammadu Buhari administration, his children will not leave for other countries.

Atiku made this assertion at a meeting held with the stakeholders of the South-East PDP in Enugu on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Atiku has assured that he would prioritise human capital development and quality education to enable young people to compete in the modern economy.

Atiku said, “In the government in which I served as Vice President, you saw Nigerians returning from abroad to invest in several opportunities in the country. Because I experienced it in my university.

“When I made sure I provide international standards, so many Nigerians from the United States and Europe came back not to Lagos or Abuja but to North-East Yola. They came back. All we need to do is to make sure we make our country attractive for them to return and they will return,” he added.

“Under the APC, the trend has since reversed. People cannot wait to run away from Nigeria. All of you have relatives, children who are running away to the United States, Canada. I have my own. I have refused any of them to go abroad and reside because I don’t believe it. We have to stay in this country.”

The former vice-president also promised he would ensure there is quality healthcare for the people.

“We shall also provide a good quality healthcare system that focuses on preventive care. We shall therefore make massive investment in this critical area. A well-educated and healthy workforce is critical for economy and wealth creation in today’s world,” he said.

The campaigns for the 2023 polls begin officially today.

Peseiro Hails Players Despite Defeat To Algeria, Speaks On Officiating New Players

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro says his players did their best despite the defeat to Algeria in Tuesday’s friendly encounter.

Peseiro’s charges started the game on a good note with Lorient striker Terem Moffi firing them into the lead in the ninth minute.

The Desert Foxes equalised from the penalty spot through Riyadh Mahrez three minutes before the break

Defender, Youcef Atal netted the winning goal from a long-range effort 20 minutes from time.

“It was a good game, the camping showed the quality of our players and their collective effort. It was a hard match, Algeria is good team. Our players try to do what I ask them to do in training,” Peseiro told NFF TV.

“It is possible you lose in football, I’m sad we lost. I don’t like to lose any match but I am very happy with the performance of my players. They did well in the game.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game, but I’m happy with the performance of my players.”

Godwin Saviour and Rapheal Onyedika made their first appearance for the Super Eagles in the game.

Saviour replaced the ineffective Ademola Lookman in the 65th minute, while Onyedika took the place of Frank Onyeka late on.

Peseiro shared his thoughts on the performance of the duo.

“Raphael and Godwin played for the first time with the national team. They did well,” he remarked.

“I called nine players I don’t really know before. Players who have not played with me before but some of them have played with the national team.

“Players we are just working with for the first time. Everybody played. Good job all around.”

The Super Eagles were denied a clear goal in the first half and many also questioned the penalty awarded to the Algerians.

Peseiro stated that the centre referee was wrong to disallow the goal.

“Everybody makes mistakes. I and the players can make mistakes. We scored a goal that was disallowed,” he argued.

“The penalty I could accept. He shoot the ball before Frank caught him. We must accept. There was no offside when we scored. It should have been 2-0 to us at that point.

“My team fought hard and created opportunities. A draw would have been a fair result. Congratulations to Algeria.Fantastic atmosphere, and a good match.

It was a good experience for us. Algerians supported their team. It’s good for us to know where we are and move on from there.”

Former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia gaffer also reflected on his experience with the players in camp.

“I am happy with the camping what I can say is that is not easy to have a good understanding, good organisation without training,” Peseiro stated.

“We spent eight days in camp everyone try to do the maximum. You try to input more dynamism and more organisation.

“It was another opportunity to know the players more, know the team generally and the new players. Create more understanding in the team, work more to build cohesion in our game.”

Peseiro also explained where his team need to improve in subsequent games.

“We didn’t do well in attack at times, I think we can do better in that phase. We can improve our game generally. We did well defensively but we can do more offensively. Control the ball more, show more character and fight really hard.

“We need to improve our organisation, put new dynamics. We need to work more. We have quality players but we need to. improve in the area of the organization”

The 60-year-old also revealed his desire and targets for the future.

“I am more confident than before, we lost but I have more confidence in this team,” Peseiro hinted.

The players must do well in their clubs, my staff see many matches every week.
They watch the players extensively. It’s not easy to he in the national team.

“You need quality, commitment and adapt well too. Sacrifice and have good commitment.

“I’m sad with the result but we did well. We want to win the next AFCON. First, we must qualify and play quality-friendly matches and have more camping.

“We want to have a solid team. We have a good team and we want to improve. Everybody must work together. Myself, my staff and the NFF. We can play at the highest level.”

Presidential Election: Buhari Didn’t Confer Any Advantage On APC — Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the country is witnessing a progressive decimation of terrorists and insurgents.

Lai Mohammed said the North East is again accessible because of the government’s efforts.

Gov. Oyetola Signs Ilesa University Establishment Bill

The Osun Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Tuesday, assented to the law seeking to upgrade the Osun State College of Education, Ilesa to a full-fledged University.

The Governor’s assent followed the successful passage of the Executive Bill into Law by the Osun State House of Assembly in August.

Speaking shortly after assenting to the law, Oyetola said the decision of the government to upgrade the College to a university was “not a product of fanciful effort”, but a “thorough and rigorous interrogation, characteristic of the culture of deep engagement” which his administration is noted for.

According to him, the proposed university has been carefully conceived as a thoroughly entrepreneurial and innovative institution that would be funded through a mix of sources, such as the government, community, industry, and other stakeholders without exerting unnecessary pressure on the finances of the State.

Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, while receiving the copies of the University Establishment Law from the Governor after his assent, said, “The signing of this Bill into law is a new dawn in the entire Ijesa land in particular and the State in general.

“This is a huge development for Ijesa people and Osun State. This is what we have been clamouring for, for over 40 years. As a matter of fact, the College which was established in 1979 is more than 40 years old now, and thinking to upgrade it to a full-fledged University is a welcome development. We commend and appreciate Mr. Governor for his magnanimity and generosity to the Ijesa people.

“I want to assure you that the establishment of this University will attract a lot of developments and improve on the socioeconomic activities of Ijesa land; and by extension, it is going to turn Ijesa into a tourist centre as Ijesas home and abroad will come to support the government. I can assure you that the government will not regret upgrading the College to a University”, he added.

Recall that the State government had sent a bill to the Osun State House of Assembly seeking to convert the College of Education, Ilesa, to the University of Ilesa.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun, however, expressed opposition to the move, describing it as a ploy by the Osun All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of using the conversion as a means to buy the votes of the electorates.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has reiterated his support for his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, saying the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has not been fair to the governor.

Ortom also dismissed as a ruse, insinuations that he has broken away from Wike’s camp as calls for the resignation of PDP Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, intensify.

Ortom and Ayu are both from Benue State in North Central Nigeria and the former had disclosed that he worked for the latter to occupy the office.

However, with the victory of Atiku Abubakar (from Adamawa State) at the PDP presidential primary in May, Wike and some serving and former governors in the party have been demanding that Ayu vacate the position for a southerner.

They argued that northerners cannot occupy both positions, claiming that Ayu had before the primary promised to resign should a northerner emerge as the presidential candidate of the party. The controversy has torn the party apart as Ayu insisted that he won’t step down till after his four-year term.

Ortom, a known face in the camp of Wike who came second at the presidential primary won by Atiku, reportedly contradicted the Rivers governor on Monday when he said he worked for Ayu to become PDP chairman and therefore can’t work for his removal.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Ortom said, “There is no breaking away from our group. I still sympathize with Wike for the injustices meted out on him and our group.”

The statement was signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur.

“I just came back from London this morning with Wike and I still maintain my stand on what I said. I have not moved away from there. The party leadership has not been fair to Governor Wike based on the activities that took place during the convention and after the convention.

“They have not been able to adequately deploy the internal conflict resolution mechanism of the party to resolve those issues. So I still sympathize and stand with Wike and let the leadership of the party at the national level do the right thing. It is not too late to do so,” Ortom was quoted as saying.
