Nigeria @ 62: Southern Senators Task State Assemblies On Constitution Review

The Southern Senators’ Forum has asked the State Houses of Assembly across the nation to expedite action on the Review of the 1999 Constitution as transmitted to them by the National Assembly, adding that this would be an Independence anniversary gift to Nigerians if done as such.

The Chairman of the Forum, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made this known in a statement issued on the occasion of the commemoration of the 62nd Independence anniversary.  Bamidele said he is optimistic that most of the challenges facing the nation will be a thing of the past if the salient report becomes law.

Bamidele also urged Nigerians to be optimistic about the future of the nation, notwithstanding the enormity of our current challenges, adding that there is yet light at the end of the tunnel if we have faith in God and take the much-needed steps.

He pointed out that just like the political office holders and public servants in general, every citizen has a role to play in the nation-building process and with determination, faith, and persistence, Nigerians will surely witness a new Nigeria which is headed for growth and development and that is devoid of violence, hostilities,  and acrimony.

The statement reads: ” As we celebrate the 62nd Independence anniversary of our great nation, I will like to implore the State Houses of Assembly across the Federation to expedite action on the passage of the Review of the 1999 Constitution as transmitted to them by the National Assembly because some of the problems facing the people of Nigeria are already being addressed in the amendment draft transmitted to the State Houses Assembly.

“The speedy passage of the amendment will serve as the most cherished and memorable anniversary gift you can give to the electorates who reposed confidence in you by voting you as their representatives in the Houses Assembly. 

“We must also know that the process of nation building is a collective responsibility of both the leaders and followers in order for us to have the nation of our desire and Nigerians should continue to hope for a greater future with determination, faith, and persistence, Nigerians will surely see a nation devoid of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, ethnic hostilities, and acrimony.

“Nigerians should not succumb to their future in the hands of the pessimists who are always craving for negative news in the country, but put their trust in God, for He will surely see us through our challenges as a nation.

Manchester United Forward Rashford Bags EPL Player Of The Month

The Premier League Player of the Month for September has been announced as Marcus Rashford.

The Manchester United forward scored twice and assisted Antony on his goal in the 3-1 win over Arsenal. Earlier in the month, he assisted Jadon Sancho on United’s game-winning goal at Leicester.

It is the second time Rashford has received the accolade. The first time he received it was in January 2019.

United only played two league games in September as two of their matches against Crystal Palace and Leeds were postponed due to the death of the Queen.

Rashford has not trained with United since this week, and it is unclear if he will be available for the Manchester derby at City on Sunday.

The spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign, Senator Dino Melaye, has said the current state of Nigeria leaves so much to be desired.

Melaye said Nigeria’s situation is akin to a car being driven by a drunk driver.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Melaye said no part of Nigeria is safe.

He, however, said Atiku has the capacity and competence to address the country’s challenges.

He said, “Atiku is a celebrated problem solver. What I am saying is that he has the competence and the capacity to solve problems because he understands the problems. He knows this country in and out, having been vice president and a very celebrated one at that. And from the postulations he has made so far, there is no doubt that he is the most experienced to take us out of the ditch that the APC has dropped us.

“We are in an outrageous calamitous situation, where no part of our national life is working. Today there is no security not to talk of welfare. We are in a very precarious situation that Nigeria is extremely sick; it is like a car being driven by a drunk driver. No part of this country is safe.”

Melaye added that Atiku is not paying lip service to restructure.

He stated, “I am telling you that he authored a book on restructuring when it was not safe for any northerner to speak about restructuring. Atiku boldly spoke about restructuring. So he is speaking from his heart.

“Whatever he said he stands by it. It is not going to be a matter of one or two years; it’s something that is going to start immediately. He has the capacity to make sure that all his five agendas start from the first day in office.”

Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma has pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to allow students to return back to school. He said all hands must be on deck, so as to achieve this laudable objective.

The governor made this appeal during an audience with members of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) at Government House, Owerri.

Governor Uzodinma pleaded specifically with the FUTO branch of ASUU to allow students studying in the university to go back to school and urged all parties in the ASUU/Federal Government saga to sheathe their swords and allow normalcy to return to the institutions.

He said, “Education is the key ingredient for national development, so it is the responsibility of leaders in the country to resolve issues and controversies that tend to impede the academic progress of her youths.

“What the leaders of Nigeria owe our future generation is to ensure that they are given the opportunity to acquire knowledge and be better citizens in the future.”

The governor who acknowledged that education is an expensive project to acquire said that “when the foundation is laid and infrastructure like that of FUTO is put on the ground as a platform, it is the civic responsibility of the leaders to support the institution to maximize their potentials.”

On the controversies surrounding land allocation in FUTO, the governor noted that the administration has gone the extra mile to investigate the problems and related matters, noting that the problems could be resolved amicably.

Putin Open To Ukraine Talks, But Not With Zelensky

President of Russia, Vladimir Putin is currently attending the formal ceremony of the annexation of the four Ukrainian regions in Moscow.

Putin has announced that the four Russian-occupied regions – Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia will officially become part of the Russian Federation today.

According to Putin, who started a war against Ukraine on February 24, the four regions will be incorporated after Kremlin-orchestrated “referendums.”

While the West has opposed the action, Putin has gone ahead with the decision.

“I order the recognition of the state sovereignty and independence,” Putin said on Thursday.

The official annexation was widely expected following the votes that closed on Tuesday in the areas.

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has said that his administration will provide the support necessary for the success of the 2023 Population and Housing Census in the state.

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has said that his administration will provide the support necessary for the success of the 2023 Population and Housing Census in the state.

Ikpeazu made the promise in Umuahia on Thursday during the Abia stakeholders’ summit on the upcoming exercise. He said that the outcome of the census would help “to further strengthen the State Government’s planning metrics”.

He said that the outcome of the exercise would help the government to work with empirical data on the population and housing units in the state.

“These figures have relevance across indices of human and infrastructural development planning.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that an accurate population and housing census is a condition-precedent for proper development planning,” the governor said.

He argued that over the years, census in the country had “been dogged by controversy over the accuracy of figures assigned to states.

“Most states have disputed the figures while some have taken steps to conduct their own exercise,” he said. Ikpeazu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Okey Ahaiwe, said that the summit “signposts the seriousness the State Government attaches to the exercise”.

He hoped that the meeting would help to minimize such controversies in the 2023 census. He opined that “the more people are involved in a process, the less likely it is that they will question the outcome.

“This is why we impaneled a high-level state census committee to coordinate our participation in the exercise.

“The committee is to ensure that all relevant stakeholders are properly carried along so as to ensure a credible and acceptability outcome.

“Our administration places a high premium on data for planning purposes.

“It is for this reason that we collaborated with the Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta to produce a long-term plan for Abia.

“The document is a testament to our attention to data-driven planning,” Ikpeazu said. He, therefore, charged all the relevant stakeholders to cooperate fully with the committee “to ensure a successful outcome of their assignment”.

The governor thanked the National Population Commission (NPC) for working closely with the state to ensure a seamless exercise.

He also commended the members of the committee for their dedication and hard work. He charged “all hands to be on deck as we carry out this all-important exercise”.

Chief Johnny Nwabisi, the Abia Federal Commissioner in NPC, thanked the governor for his commitment to ensuring a successful and result-based census in Abia.

He expressed delight over the setting up of a committee which, he said, would help to sensitize and mobilize the citizenry to present themselves for the exercise. He expressed disappointment with the ugly experience encountered by the commission in some parts of the state during the trial census.

Nwabisi warned the people of the South East not to allow themselves to be misled by any group of agitators. He said that the 2023 census offered a golden opportunity for the zone to have its population accurately enumerated.

He recalled that the population of the area was grossly under-enumerated in the 2006 census, due to the disruptions by the separatist Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra.

Nwabisi argued that the request for the UN to conduct a referendum for the South East could only be realized after the actual population of the zone had been ascertained.

Stakeholders at the well-attended meeting, including traditional rulers, individuals, and groups, were unanimous in their demand for an accurate head count in Abia to ascertain the true population of the citizenry.

They emphasized that accurate Abia population data would translate to improved infrastructure, revenue, and other development indices in the state.

Other speakers at the event included the Chairman, Abia Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Joseph Nwabeke, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Chief Uchenna Obigwe, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Agonmuo, and representatives of the state chapter of the National Council of Women Societies, amongst others.

Bribery allegations against the National Working Committee (NWC) members have been debunked by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following alleged approval by the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, not less than six of 19 members of the NWC have returned funds paid into their accounts

The amounts range from N28.8million to N36million, depending on the recipient’s position. Letters of the refund are in the public domain.

Those who have refunded include Taofeek Arapaja, Deputy National Chairman South; Stella Effah-Attoe, National Woman Leader; Dan Orbih, National Vice Chairman, South-South.

Others are Alli Odefa, National Vice Chairman, South-East, Olasoji Adagunobi-Oluwatukesi, National Vice Chairman, South-West; Setonji Koshoedo, Deputy National Secretary.

In a statement Thursday night, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba said the funds were not inducements.

The spokesman alleged there were “strange and unfounded motives to the Housing Allowance duly approved and paid to NWC members and staff”.

Ologunagba said the allowance went through due process of the party “in line with the Conditions of Service and Entitlement of the Staff and Principal Officers”.

The image maker told Nigerians that if any individual decides to return the money, such does not in any way suggest that it was paid as a bribe or was illegitimate.

“A bribe is defined as ‘money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behaviour of a person, especially in that person’s performance as a public official.

“This is not the case in the payment of Housing Allowance duly approved for officials and staff of the Party”, the statement added.

Russia Claims Ukraine Responsible For Killing 22 Civilians

Russia has recognized the independence of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decrees published by the official database of legislative information on Friday.

One document recognizes “state sovereignty and independence of the Zaporozhye Region,” the other – of the Kherson Region. Both decrees come into force on the day they were signed.

According to the documents, the Russian president’s decision is based on universal principles and norms of the international law, acknowledging and confirming the principle of equality and self-determination of peoples enshrined by the UN Charter, and with regard to the will of the people expressed in a referendum.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, a ceremony to sign accession treaties with four new territories – the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk (DPR and LPR), as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions – will be held in the Kremlin at 15:00 Moscow time.

Russia recognized the independence of the DPR and the LPR in February.

Referendums on becoming a part of Russia were held in the DPR and the LPR, as well as in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions from September 23 to 27. In the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, the ballot question read as follows: “Are you in favor of the region leaving Ukraine, creating an independent state, and joining the Russian Federation?” An overwhelming majority of residents answered positively to those questions. Earlier, Putin said that Moscow would support the decision made during these referendums.

Police Arrest, Detain Two Journalists In Kwara

Mr. Kolo Yusuf, the Commissioner of Police for Zamfara State, has charged senior police officers with acting professionally in the discharge of their duties.

He issued a warning that any police officer seen mingling with criminals would be exposed.

The state police chief directed complete compliance with the Inspector-General of Police’s order prohibiting quasi-security outfits from participating in campaigns, rallies, and other political processes.

Yusuf gave the directive when he held a meeting with the Area Commanders, DPOs, Tactical Commanders, and other police officers during an extensive lecture and interactive session ahead of the 2023 general elections in the State.

During the lecture, the commissioner told his men to ensure that all quasi-security outfits established by various State governments and local communities operating under different nomenclatures were banned from partaking in any electioneering campaign.

He said the outfits had no legal roles under the Electoral Act.

On the social media policy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the Commissioner warned officers and men to ensure absolute compliance with the directives.

Nigeria Governors’ Forum Oppose Proposed Sale Of Power Plants

Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has said that it is strongly opposed to the proposed sale of the five National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) by the Federal Government.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises had earlier in the year pre-qualified 16 firms for the privatization of the five NIPPs. The plants are: Benin Generation Company Limited at Ihovba, Edo State; Calabar Generation Company Limited, Cross River State; Geregu Generation Company Limited, Kogi State; Olorunsogo Generation Company Limited, Ogun State; and Omotosho Generation Company Limited, Ondo State

Kayode Fayemi, outgoing Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, made this known shortly after their closed-door meeting and official commissioning of the New NGF Secretariat Complex by Vice President Yemi Osibajo in Abuja Thursday.

He said the NGF’s opposition to the privatization of power plants became imperative because the governors had to be clear about the process and ensure the plan was transparent, equitable, and fair to all parties involved.

Fayemi affirmed that until the appropriate steps were taken to ensure proper consideration of all the state governors as shareholders in decision-making, nothing would be done.

According to him, all states and local governments have a certain percentage of share in the power plant and should be at the table when decisions are being made, which is why it’s a federation.

He emphasized that the NGF’s responsibility was to discuss and forge a consensus on addressing issues of national interest as non-partisan in advancing good governance which they would continue to sustain.

Fayemi stressed NGF’s commitment to changing the narrative of business as usual and delivering better governance through far-reaching resolutions taken collectively as a forum in the interest of Nigerians.

Speaking on the issue of flood ravaging states, Fayemi explained that NGF had agreed to send delegates to President Buhari on how to mitigate the situation to a minimum.

Commenting on the new NGF Complex, Fayemi explained that the secretariat currently accommodates a number of professionals working across sectors, development programmes, projects and initiatives focused on advancing reforms aimed at enhancing subnational development.

“Facilities like our training room have benefitted at least 4,000 of our state officials via training courses, peer learning events, and reform dialogues conducted by the Forum’s Secretariat.

“Today the Forum enjoys both national and international recognition for being a formidable platform in advancing good governance.
