Woman, 37 Arrested In Anambra For Allegedly Torturing Granddaughter To Death

Anambra State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has arrested a 37-year-old woman, Udeogu Chinelo, for allegedly flogging her three-year-old granddaughter to death.

NAPTIP’s Public Relations Officer, Okafor Anthony, in a statement, yesterday, said the suspect hails from Enugwu-Ukwu but married in Nibo, Awka South Local Council of the state.

He said Chinelo was arrested in a Primary School in Awka, where she had earlier enrolled the deceased, Ifechukwu and had gone to ask for a refund of the school fees she paid for her.

He also disclosed that the deceased had reportedly suffered convulsion after she was flogged by the suspect, who claimed to have rushed her to the hospital where she died, adding that the victim reportedly died on September 29, 2022.

He said: “NAPTIP Anambra State Command arrested a 37-year- old female suspect in Awka on October 5 for the offence of child abuse/inflicting grievous harm on a child, an offence prohibited in the human trafficking Act.

“While being questioned on the whereabouts of the victim, she disclosed that the victim had died. The suspect led NAPTIP operatives to the scene where she disposed of the body of the victim.

“On arriving at the scene, the victim’s decomposing body was found wrapped in a black nylon bag where the suspect dumped her in the bush around Hezekiah Dike Crescent Awka.

“The suspect was immediately handed over to the Police by NAPTIP Anambra State Command to investigate the death of the victim.”

Contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ikenga Tochukwu, said the matter has been transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for discrete investigation.

“On the incident about a woman, Chinelo Udogu, who allegedly flogged a three-year-old child to death and dumped her body in a bush at Amikwo, Awka, she has been arrested and the victim’s body recovered.

“The lesson for us is that we should be cautious when angry and desist from going physical when correcting our children,” he added.

He said: “The trip was very good. I enjoyed my break and I am happy to be back in my fatherland Nigerians should expect a very intelligent ability to think and perform.

“Nigerians should expect that the help they need is here.

“The hope that is almost dithering is back. I am back actively,” he declared.

President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed he inherited a country at crossroads with bombs detonating in cities of Nigeria.

Buhari disclosed this during the passing-out parade and commissioning ceremony of cadets of regular Course 69 of the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, in Kaduna on Thursday.

He, however, said his administration has been able to manage Nigeria’s security crisis since assuming office in 2015.

When this government came in 2015, we inherited a country at crossroads with bombs going off with frightening frequency even in our cities, and we came in to manage the crisis,” he said.

Buhari called on the cadets to replicate the spirit of social cohesion they learned at the NDA and be incorruptible models to society.

He stressed that the cadets emerged in the era of expanding global security threats.

A total of 239 cadets, including those from sister African countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Niger Republic, Chad, and Uganda are passing out from the Academy as junior military officers.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Friday lay the 2023 Appropriation Bill before a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Ahead of the Federal Government budget presentation, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, passed the 2023–2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, which the President earlier presented to the National Assembly.

The House approved an aggregate FGN expenditure of N19.76tn, made up of total recurrent (non-debt) of N8.53tn; personnel costs (MDAs) of N827.8bn; capital expenditure (exclusive of transfers), N3.96tn; special intervention (recurrent) of N350bn; and special intervention (capital) of N7bn.

The Federal Government had proposed a budget with estimates totalling N19.76tn, while the deficit was to hover between N11.30tn and N12.41tn in the 2023 fiscal year.

The Federal Government has declared Monday 10th October, 2022 as Public Holiday.

A statement issued by Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said the holiday is to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid Celebration in commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Aregbesola congratulated all Muslims both at home and in the Diaspora for witnessing this year’s occasion.

He admonished all Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of love, patience. tolerance and perseverance which are deep spiritual virtues and which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exemplified, adding that doing so would guarantee peace, security and harmony In the country.

He enjoined Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to refrain from violence, lawlessness and other acts of criminality. “As the indisputable leader of our race, we must demonstrate responsible leadership in Africa”, the Minister stated.

While calling for a stop to all divisive tendencies across the country, Aregbesola urges all Nigerians, and the youth in particular. to embrace the virtues of hard work and peaceful disposition to fellow humans, irrespective of faith, ideology, social class and ethnicity and join hands with the President Muhammadu be proud of.

He wished all Muslims a happy celebration and Nigerians a happy holiday.

The Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State, Mr Rabiu Olowo has emerged 2022 “Public Finance Administrator of the Year” in Leadership Excellence Awards.

In a nationwide online poll monitored by ABN TV,  Mr Olowo polled 65,234 votes to defeat Dapo Okubadejo, 38, 159 votes, Fidelis Tilije, 21, 698 votes and Daniel Agye who secured 11, 679 votes.

The prestigious award, endorsed by the African Union, African Film Institute, will be presented to him in a glamorous ceremony organised by IgbereTV at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Abuja on November 5, 2022.

IgbereTV media crew led by the Executive Director, Emeh James Anyalekwa visited him to formally inform him of his nomination and victory in the online poll.

The team also conducted awardee post-profiling, photo session and presentation of her Table reservation for the event..

Despite the biting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Olowo through his ministry helped the Lagos State Government to generate over N785bn between 2020 and 1st quarter of 2021

Mr Olowo is the 22nd Honourable Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State, managing the fiscal policy strategy of the 5th largest economy in Africa.

He is also a Chartered Accountant (ICAN), Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA, UK), Chartered Tax Practitioner (CITN), Certified in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS)., (ACCA), with an MBA from the University of Lagos, and MSC Accounting & Finance from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK. He is an alumni of Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Mr Olowo before being appointed as a Commissioner worked for top local and multinational organizations across Industries including Zenith Bank Plc; British Pharmaceutical Giant – GlaxoSmithKline; Dutch Global Diary Leader – FrieslandCampina; Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA, UK); Club of Global Development Finance Organizations etc. with project immersion across Africa, Europe, Middle East and USA.

Gunmen Attack FCT Task Force Team Who Were Enforcing Motorcycle Ban

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT Ministerial Task Team on Thursday came under gun attack from hoodlums during a clearance operation along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport road corridor.

The operation which was meant to enforce the ban on commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as “okada”, saw the team impounding over 100 motorbikes.

Their offences include driving against traffic, driving on the express way among others.

As the raid was on along the car wash area in Lugbe some of the riders mobilized themselves and started shooting at the joint task team and also attacked them with other dangerous weapons.

Items recovered by the taskteam included one locally made gun, pistol, cutlasses and a dagger.

Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to the Minister of FCT, Attah Ikharo who spoke on the incident said; “We came for removal of okada on the airport corridor. The Minister of FCT, Malam Muhammad Bello, has given a marching order that okada should be removed because they are not allowed to ply the main road but most times we find them heavily driving against traffic on the express way, contravening traffic rules, we find them behaving unruly, we find them hurting people here so we came to remove them on the airport road”.

On how many okadas were impounded, he said, “There was massive impounding of okadas, we impounded over 100”.

Condemning the attack on the security officials, he said, “For us, attack is a regular thing for us, we are used to being attacked. We have been attacked severally.

“Before the joint taskforce came on board the security men have always been under attack by these okada riders, it is a regular thing here”.

Adamu Shehu, Head of Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS in the taskteam urged the motorcycle riders to stop violation of traffic rules.

“My message is that they should stop driving against the traffic because when we see them we are going to seize their okada.

“All the okada impounded today, we will go through the court process and we are going to crush them”.

Buhari Meets Freed Kaduna Train Passengers, Assures Nigerians Of Security

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, met with the passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna train who recently regained their freedom from captivity.

On March 28, an attack on a train on its way to Kaduna from Abuja resulted in killings, injuries and abductions.

A total of 61 persons were said to have been kidnapped during the attack.

The abductees have been released at various intervals, including 11 freed in June, seven in July, and 12 persons in August.

On Wednesday, Usman Yusuf, secretary, chief of defence staff action committee (CDSAC), announced the release of the 23 passengers who were still in captivity.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, Buhari paid an impromptu visit to the 23 freed passengers at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) hospital in Kaduna.

The president had earlier attended the passing-out parade for cadets of the 69 regular course of the NDA in Afaka, Kaduna state.

“Before boarding NAF 001 back to Abuja from the Kaduna International Airport, President Buhari detoured to the hospital, where he also thanked the Nigerian military for their brave services in securing the safe release of the hostages from Boko Haram terrorists,” the statement reads.

“Members of the Chief of Defence Staff Action Committee, led by Maj.-Gen. Usman Abdulkadir (Rtd), who facilitated the release of the train victims, were present at the hospital.

“Others are Maj.-Gen Adamu Jalingo (Rtd), Brig.-Gen. Abubakar Saad (Rtd), Dr. Murtala Ahmed Rufai, Ibrahim Abdulllahi, Amb. Ahmed Magaji and Prof Yusuf Usman, Secretary.

“The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. LEO Irabor had earlier introduced the Committee members and briefed the President.”

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Kolawole Stephen Ologbondiyan, a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP as one of his spokespersons for the 2023 presidential campaign.

A release signed by Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to Atiku, said the appointment takes immediate effect.

With his appointment, Ologbondiyan joins other spokespersons earlier appointed by the presidential candidate to project the unique selling points of Atiku Abubakar and keep the electorate updated about goings on in the campaign.

Ologbondiyan was a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP from December 2017 to December 2021. He was the director of media and publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council at the 2019 presidential election and is now a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
