50-Year-Old Farmer Hacked To Death In Ondo

An Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court, weekend, ordered the remand of 18-year-old Tope Momoh, for allegedly strangling his 52-year-old mother, Stella Momoh to death.

Police Prosecutor, Nelson Akintimehin, said that the defendant was arraigned for murder.

According to Akintimehin, the defendant committed the offence at midnight on September 6, 2022, at Ikakumi Akoko, in Ondo state.

He informed the court that Tope strangled his mother to death in the middle of the night for calling him a bastard.

He said the defendant confessed he was responsible for his mother’s death two weeks after she had been buried.

The Prosecutor said that the cause of the death of the victim was not immediately known when she died until her son confessed to being the perpetrator.

“Tope, in his confession, said he was forced to tell his relatives that he strangled his mother to death when she woke him up at midnight, raining curses on him and calling him a bastard repeatedly.”

The prosecutor said the offence contravenes Section 319(1)of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant pleaded with the court that: “I did not have rest of mind since my mother has been buried. So, I was forced to confess that I strangled her to death. So, I want the court to show me mercy.”

However, the prosecutor, urged the court to remand the defendant in a custodial centre, pending the outcome of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The defendant’s plea was not taken as Chief Magistrate Musa Al-Yunnus ordered his remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre.

Al-Yunnus, therefore, adjourned the case till October 20, 2022, for a ruling.

Also, a 19-year-old student of the Department of Public Administration of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, RUGIPO, Adebanji Abiodun Fisayo, has been remanded at the Federal Correctional Centre, Owo, for robbery.

The trial Chief Magistrate, Mrs W.O. Dosumu, ordered his remand after he was charged to the court for robbery.

The charge sheet reads: “That you Adebanji Abiodun Fisayo, ‘M’ on the 28th day of September 2022 at about 3:45 pm at L88 Hotel, Along Isuada Express Road, Owo in the Owo Magisterial district unlawfully assault one Salaja Florence ‘F’ with intent to have carnal knowledge of her against the order of the nature and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 352 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Adebanji Abiodun Fisayo on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did attempt to rape one Salaja Florence ‘F’ at gunpoint and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 359 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Adebanji Abiodun Fisayo on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magistrate’s district did rob one Salaja Florence ‘F’ of the sum of N30,000 (Thirty thousand Naira Only) and one smart 7 Techno handset at gunpoint and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 401 and punishable under section 402 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Adebanji Abiodun Fisayo ‘M’ on the 30th day of September 2022 at about 3:50pm at WEMA Bank, Owo in Magisterial district did demand the sum of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) from one Salaja Florence ‘F’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 406 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

After the charge was read, the accused pleaded not guilty and the Chief Magistrate Dosumu adjourned the case till 10th October 2022 to enable him get a lawyer to defend him.

Fleeing Kuje Prison Inmate Arrested In Kano

The Kano state Police Command, on Friday, confirmed that it had arrested one Abubakar Mohammed Sadiq believed to be a suspected escapee from Kuje prison break in the state.

In a statement on Friday by the spokesman of the Police Command, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the suspect was arrested at Rangaza Quarters, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.

He said the 25-year-old Sadiq, of Badarawa Quarters, Kaduna North Local Government in Kaduna State, was arrested on September 23 at about 6:00 pm, based on credible information, coupled with sustained intelligence gathering.

According to the statement, Sadiq was nabbed by a team of Operation Restore Peace, attached to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department.

In addition, the statement noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Lawan, directed that the suspected escapee be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Kano State Command.

“In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IG Alkali Baba Usman, on Community-based Policing and Intelligence-led Policing, Kano State Police Command under the leadership of CP Abubakar Lawal, rejigs its intelligence gathering strategy and Community Policing engagements.

“On 23/09/2022 at about 1800hrs, based on credible information and sustained intelligence gathering, a team of Operation Restore Peace attached to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department arrested one Abubakar Mohammed Sadiq, ‘m’, 25 years old of Badarawa Quarters, Kaduna North LGA, Kaduna State, a suspected Kuje Correctional Centre escapee. The suspect was arrested at Rangaza Quarters, Ungogo LGA, Kano State. The Commissioner of Police directed that the suspected escapee be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Kano State Command.

“The Commissioner of Police appreciates the good people of Kano State for their continuous support, encouragement and cooperation. He urged residents to continue to pray for the State, and the Nation and report incidents to the nearest police station and not take laws into their hands. Raids of criminal hideouts and black spots will continue throughout the State, as the Command will sustain the tempo in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere in Kano State,” he said.

Fuel Subsidy Will End By 2023, It’s Unsustainable - Buhari — President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed that the costly fuel subsidy will end by 2023.

Buhari said this on Friday during the presentation of the proposed 2023 budget to the national assembly, in Abuja.

Buhari had presented a record N20.51 trillion 2023 appropriation bill to the national assembly, earlier on Friday.

He said the subsidy was no longer sustainable considering the current fiscal impact.

“As we seek to grow our government revenues, we must also focus on the efficiency of utilisation of our limited resources. Critical steps we are taking include immediate implementation of additional measures towards reducing the cost of governance and the discontinuation of fuel subsidy in 2023 as announced earlier,” he said.

Buhari said discontinuing the policy was necessary for the country to manage its limited resources.

However, he noted that there would be alternative provisions to curb the effects of the petrol subsidy removal.

“We are however mindful of the fact that reducing government spending too drastically can be socially destabilising, and so will continue to implement programmes to support the more vulnerable segments of society,” he said.

“Fuel subsidy has been a recurring and controversial public policy issue in our country since the early eighties. However, its current fiscal impact has clearly shown that the policy is unsustainable.

“As a country, we must now confront this issue taking cognisance of the need to provide safety nets to cushion the attendant effects on some segments of society.”

Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, had said the federal government will halt spending on fuel subsidy in June 2023.

ABN TV had reported that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited spent N2.565 trillion on fuel subsidy payments since the beginning of the year.

This year, the federal government has projected to spend N4 trillion on fuel subsidies, and another estimated N6.7 trillion in 2023 (if the subsidy is not removed).

The spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, has likened the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to a bus conductor applying for the post of a driver.

Keyamo said Atiku is only hanging onto the achievements of his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment said Atiku has no achievement to sell to Nigerians.

He disclosed this in a tweet and a video on his micro-blogging site.

According to Keyamo: “Atiku Abubakar can be likened to a bus conductor applying for the post of a driver along with another applicant who was a proper driver.

“There is really nothing to sell, he only hangs on to the achievements of his boss; I said this before, he has never been in charge of any tier of government, and he wants to be president.

“He has never been tested and trusted. Even when he was the Chairman of the Economic Council as Vice president, he was still reporting to a boss.

Former PDP National Chair, Vincent Ogbulafor Is Dead — Sir Vincent Ogbulafor

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Vincent Ogbulafor has passed on, ABN TV reports

Ogbulafor died on Thursday in Canada at the age of 73 years.

Confirming his death, a family member who wished to be anonymous said Ogbulafor died of an undisclosed illness.

The deceased was the PDP’s first National Secretary.

He hails from Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government of Abia State.

Ogbulafor, who was born on May 24, 1949, was the first PDP’s National Secretary before he later became the party’s National Chairman.

The deceased was, however, forced to resign his position after he fell out with some top PDP chieftains.

Ogbulafor became PDP national chairman on March 8, 2008 and started his tenure on a controversial note with his comments in which he sounded magisterial and that he did not care if Nigeria became a one-party state.

He was succeeded as national chairman by the former governor of Enugu State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.

NDLEA Vows To Arrest Politicians Supporting Their Followers With Drugs During Campaigns

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has vowed to arrest and prosecute politicians that encourage the consumption of illicit drugs during political campaigns.

Its Ondo State Commander, Mr Kayode Mumuni, lamented in Akure, that “most politicians, directly or indirectly encourage the use of drug by their followers.

According to him, “I appeal to politicians in Ondo state to set an example to all the political leaders in the country by ensuring that their followers steer clear of drugs and drug abuse because if they don’t, the consequences on the residents will be calamitous.

“It will be practically difficult for us to go to campaign grounds to arrest them, if we do that, it will be insinuated that maybe, their opponents are the ones sponsoring us. So, we don’t want to be caught in the political web, but what we want to assure everybody is that whosoever that is caught indulging in any act of drug abuse or use will not be spared, irrespective of the party he comes from.”

Mumuni therefore appealed to politicians in the state to ensure that their followers steer clear of drugs and drug abuse as campaigns into the 2023 general elections commenced.

Speaking on drugs in schools, the commander said :“We’ve been to various institutions, we’ve visited secondary schools and have gone to Churches and Mosques to spread this awareness that drugs only bring destruction, it doesn’t do the body or the community any good and we will make sure that we reduce the inflow or outflow of drugs to the barest minimum in the state.”

Meanwhile, Mumuni, said 220 suspects have been arrested with nine tonnes of assorted illicit drugs and other deadly substances seized by the state Command in the last eight months.

According to him, the seizure occurred between January and August while over 54 of the suspects have been prosecuted.

The Commander added that 68 were counseled and released after discovering their level of involvement in cultivation, while 15 were rehabilitated.

“These include those brought by their parents or guardians for rehabilitation and we have a center here where the rehabilitation is being done, we also have a consultant psychiatric from the Federal Medical Center who comes from time to time.

“We are not really happy arresting people. What we want is for us to eliminate drugs and we feel that we can eliminate it without necessarily arresting people and that is why we focus more on sensitization, awareness and enlightenment campaigns which aimed at discouraging the use of drugs.

“If a suspect is arrested, he is not necessarily taken for rehabilitation. What we do is to investigate and when we see that he is culpable, we will then prosecute him in court. Quite a lot have been prosecuted and convicted. We have over 54 of them convicted between January and August, 2022.

“Ordinarily, a Psychiatric doctor ought to be resident here but because of lack of funds, we could not afford to have one. So what we do is to partner Federal Medical Center”.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, says President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has spent at least $100 million to feed 10 million Nigerian children under the National School Feeding Programme.

Ngige stated this in his office on Friday, when he received the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leornard and officials of the Department of State who paid him a courtesy visit.

He explained that the school feeding programme was part of efforts to eliminate the scourge of child labour in the country, saying Nigerian government introduced the programme to ”lure children engaged in child labour, back to school”

“We have introduced the National school feeding programme under our social security, to lure children back to school. As of today, we are feeding 10 million children across the country. We have spent nearly $100 million on this.”

“We have also taken more schools into the areas prone to child labour and made education free in the whole country through the Universal Basic Education Act and the Child Rights Act.

“For the people with disability, we introduced Disability Peoples Commission to give them full and comprehensive aid so that they will not fell that they have any disability. If you don’t support someone with disability, it is outright poverty,” he said.

According to him, vulnerable families send their underage children to work in cocoa farms, mining sites or to engage in street hawking and petty trading, because family income is not enough, owing to underemployment or unemployment.

He explained that advocacy alone cannot reduce the scourge, as it would be difficult to retain the audience of a hungry person.

The minister lauded the US government for the recent technical assistance of the United States Department of Labour to West Africa, in the area of fighting violence and harassment at work under Convention 190 of International Labour Organisation (ILO).

“Nigeria and Liberia is listed there and the fund is $5 million, estimated to be spent on the project. We think that it is a step in the right direction.

Earlier, Leornard said the United States Government was worried to see that Nigerian children were subjected to the worst forms of child labour in quarries and granites and mining sites.

She assured that her country would continue to work with the Nigerian Government in addressing the scourge and appealed to the remaining seven states yet to domesticate the Child Rights Act to do so without further delay.

She said the US government was pleased to see a new programme in Nigeria that provides seed capital to vulnerable people to pursue programmes in areas with high prevalence of child labour.
