NAFDAC Warns Customs Agents Against Complicity In Illegal Importation Of Syringes

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has notified Healthcare providers and the public of the death of 66 children in the Gambia following the use of four substandard cough syrups as reported by WHO in September 2022.

The four products are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

Laboratory analysis of samples of the four products confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants.

Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal.

Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury which may lead to death.

The stated manufacturer of these products is Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited (Haryana, India). To date, the stated manufacturer.

The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has said that he will not succumb to intimidation or blackmail just because of his senatorial ambition.

He also insisted that he will never trade the interest of the state to gain political power.

Governor Ortom spoke during an enlarged meeting with Jemgbagh PDP Elders Forum comprising Gboko, Tarka and Buruku Local Government Areas held on Sunday, October 9th, 2022 at the Gboko residence of Hon. Mike Mku.

The meeting was at the instance of the Jemgbagh PDP Elders Forum, which sought to get clarifications on the cold war between the Governor and the National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu following calls by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike that the national chairman should resign.

Giving details of what snowballed into the current crises, the Governor dispelled insinuations that he is pulling down a Jemgbagh son.

Rather, he explained how he rallied support for the election of Senator Ayu against all odds.

He pointed out that he will never succumb to blackmail and keep silent in the face of injustice perpetrated by the PDP under Senator Ayu’s leadership.

Already, some pseudo-groups claiming to be speaking on behalf of the Jemgbagh political block have been stoking public blackmail against the Governor whom they accused of working against the interest of Ayu.

The Governor in a lucid narrative, took time to explain his role in the emergence of the PDP National Chairman, Senator Ayu and his position on the travails the Chairman is facing over calls for his resignation.

Governor Ortom maintained that power is given by God and “No one should blackmail me because of my senatorial ambition. Nobody should think he will intimidate me because of the senate election.”

According to the Governor, “If God ordains me to be elected Senator for the Benue North-West Senatorial zone, no amount of blackmail or intimidation could prevent me from winning.”

The Governor told the Jemgbagh PDP Elders that Senator Ayu who is also from the Jemgbagh political bloc has mounted a smear campaign and blackmail against his person and office when he met members of the Board of Trustees of the PDP.

Governor Ortom noted that since he is contesting for the Benue North-West Senatorial district seat, he has become a subject of intimidation and blackmail by some Jemgbagh stakeholders as a result of the internal crisis rocking the party with Ayu as the helmsman.

He said following the post-PDP Presidential convention with emerging internal wranglings, he advised Senator Ayu to reach out to aggrieved leaders of the party and plead for their understanding over calls for his resignation.

Rather than take his counsel, Governor Ortom lamented that Senator Ayu chose to take the ignoble path of disuniting the party by his actions and utterances.

The Governor insisted that the National Chairman did not maintain neutrality in handling the affairs leading to the PDP national convention, which produced Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the party.

He stressed that “Ayu himself committed to resigning should a northern presidential candidate emerge at the northern caucus at the Bauchi State lodge.”

The Governor wondered why Senator Ayu is now reneging on his promise, which he voluntarily made before all the northern leaders of the party.

He explained that contrary to speculations that he is working at cross purposes with Ayu, he had actively rallied support from his PDP Governor’s colleagues and other critical stakeholders for the emergence of the national chairman with the interest of the state, especially to place Benue in national politics.

The Governor told the Jemgbagh stakeholders to also invite Senator Ayu and himself to a meeting so that they could both present their positions on the matter.

He insisted that despite the betrayals, intimidation and blackmail, he would continue to stand for justice for his people.

Chairman of the Jemgbagh PDP Elders Forum, Barrister Sam Tsumba said the Forum will invite Senator Ayu and Governor Ortom to further find a way to resolve the conflict.

Nigerians spent $609.5m on foreign education between January and August 2022. The figure is contained in the data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria, calculated based on the information provided on the amount spent on educational services under the sectorial utilisation for transactions valid for foreign exchange.

In January 2022, the apex bank noted that a total of $60,202,730.84 was spent on foreign education, while noting that $69.9m was spent in February 2022.

In March 2022, there was a significant increase as the bank stated that $87.26m was spent.

In April, there was a little reduction as a total of $78.62m was recorded by the apex bank.

The figure for May 2022 was stated as $82.70m.

Further analysis revealed that in June 2022, the apex bank released $84.90m, while a total of $61.99m was released in July 2022.

A slight increase was recorded in August 2022 when a total of $84.01 million was released.

ABN TV reports that Nigerians have continued to troop out in their numbers in pursuit of foreign academic qualifications.

Recent data released by the home office of the United Kingdom revealed that the number of study visas released to Nigerians increased by 222.8 per cent, with 65,929 issued as at June 2022 as against 20,427 in the same period in 2021.

ABN TV reports that education in Nigeria, especially in the tertiary educational sector, has been marred by industrial actions by tertiary institution-based unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union.

Currently, academic activities in Nigerian universities and colleges of education are grounded due to issues bordering on lecturers’ welfare amongst others.

The data from the CBN revealed that Nigerians remitted more than $609.5m to foreign academic institutions in eight months without significant reciprocity in form of inflows from foreign sources to the local educational sector.

ABN TV reports that the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation observed that about 76,338 Nigerians were studying abroad as of 2018, the highest from an African country.

Commenting on the development, Programme Director of Reform Education Nigeria, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, stated, “The truth is that most people see ‘japa’ as a means of survival. People just want to leave the country and that is fine. The ASUU strike is close to eight months now.

“Most of the policies by the government itself are anti-youth; the government has made the economy difficult for youths to thrive. Most people are still going to leave before the end of the year and to be honest, it is very sad; this is brain drain and the country has not even realised it yet.”

The Osun State Police Command has dismissed a video going viral on the internet, purporting that the convoy of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was attacked in the state.

A statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, on Sunday explained that the video was actually recorded during the October 17, 2020, attack on Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola’s convoy during EndSars protest in Osogbo.

The command then enjoined residents to disregard the video and go about their legitimate businesses without fear of insecurity.

It further read in parts, “The attention of Osun State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds and video trending on social media that; Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s convoy was attacked by Osun Youths on the 8th of October 2022.

“The Osun State Police Command wishes to inform the members of the public that, the news/trending video on social media was the attack on the Osun State Governor, His Excellency Oyetola Adegboyega’s convoy by EndSars protesters about 2 years ago, 17th of October 2020 and not the 8th of October 2022, as being mischievously circulated.

“To put the record straight, I wish to inform you that Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not come to Osun State for any program of late at all. The Commissioner of Police, therefore, enjoins the good people of the State to disregard the information and go about their legitimate businesses without entertaining fear of insecurity.”

Chukwuemeka Adile, the state administrative secretary of APP who represented Mascot Uzor Kalu said the visit to the 24-year-old 400 student of Micheal Okpara University Of Agriculture MOUAU is to felicitate with the mother of the babies.

He added that the APP candidate wants to be part of her success to ensure she does not go through pains anymore.

“We are here to support her,to restore her hope,to tell her she has people,to tell her that her future is still bright”.

” We are here to tell her that Abians and Nigerians are solidly behind her despite the odds she might have passed through”.

He further stated that the visit is not because it’s a political era adding that Mascot is a businessman and as a result of that helps people and has also run free traders loan for the past 10years in the state where he gives traders soft loan to carry out their day to day activities respectively.

Responding to the gifts given to the family Oluomachi Nwojo the mother of the kids expressed her joy towards the APP governorship candidate Mascot Uzor Kalu and thanked him for all that has been given to her adding that God will bless them and also everyone that has helped and contributed in so many ways for her.

Expressing joy of new borns at the Obioma ward Mascot Uzor Kalu also offset the bills of three women who gave birth to twins and couldn’t afford for their bills, Ibeleme Nkechi from Amakanma Umuahia South Abia, Nnamdi Chioma from Ihite Uboma Imo state and Chinwe Sunday from Ossa Ibeku Abia State respectively.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has declared that the commission has ended the era of election rigging in Nigeria.

He also vowed that henceforth, no eligible voter can vote more than once in any election in the country.

The INEC chairman, who spoke at a seminar titled: ‘2023 and Beyond: Leadership, Politics, and Citizens Engagement,’ organised by the St. James Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja, also said that the commission has been legally empowered to review any election result declared under duress.

Yakubu who was represented by a deputy director, Voter Education, Chukwu Emeka Ogbuaja, said the votes of Nigerians would count in the 2023 general election.

He said: “We, in INEC, have a good message for all Nigerians. We have murdered and buried rigging in Nigeria. Apart from that, no voter can afford to vote more than once in any election in Nigeria.

“Also, there will be no case of over voting again in any polling station. Voting will be based on BVAS and other electronic devices by INEC.“At the polling stations, the number of votes must be based on the number of voters accredited at the time of polling and not based on the number of registered voters. The number of accreditation at the polling station must tally with the number of actual voting. If it exceeded by one vote, the entire process would be invalidated,” the INEC chairman explained.

According to him, “the BVAS will ensure that the fingerprints tally with the facial recorded. The processes are so transparently configured that your finger and facial records are contained in the BVAS and thereafter, the results are uploaded to anyone that keys into the INEC portal anywhere in the world.”Yakubu vowed that political parties that engage in rigging will face the same experience witnessed in Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun state governorship elections.

“Nobody can rig any election. INEC has fortified its portal; People will elect the leader they leader want,” he said.He also vowed that the commission would leave a legacy of a transparent election with the outcome of the 2023 general election.He said to avoid a situation where any politician will hold its staff at a gunpoint to declare false results, that the commission is now empowered by the new electoral law to review any election result by any of its staff.

According to the INEC chairman, “Section 65 of the Act gives the Commission the power within seven days to review a declaration and return made where the commission determines that the said declaration and return was not made voluntarily or was made contrary to the provisions of the law, regulations and guidelines, and manual for the election.

“The commission will exercise this power responsibly based on the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act and its Regulations and Guidelines,” he explained.

The chairman of the occasion, Ambassador Godknows Igali explained that Nigerians as a sovereign state has citizens who have a major role in building the nation, adding that the Church must discuss politics and how it is governed.He urged Christians not to shy away from politics and good governance as that is where issues affecting all are discussed and policies implemented.

Presidency: After Rejecting APC's Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Dogara, Lawal Others To Announce Consensus Candidate

The fight over the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took a twist, yesterday, as northern Christian leaders resolved to work with their Muslim counterparts in the north to adopt one of the presidential candidates .

The group led by former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal have stoutly resisted the APC same faith ticket insisting it does not reflect the religious plurality of the country and should not be allowed to fly.

In recent weeks, the group has held series of consultations with key stakeholders in the party, the northern region and country demanding withdraw of support for the ticket.

On Saturday, the group held a consultative meeting and dialogue with Northern APC Christian leaders and Northern Muslim political leaders at NAF Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting, yesterday, said those in attendance agreed not to support the Tinubu/Shettima ticket, but to work together and jointly adopt a pan-Nigerian political platform that would engender unity, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging among Nigerian citizens.

The communique was jointly signed by former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Yakubu Dogara and former Minister of Water Resources, Mukhari Shagari.

It read in parts: “Conscious of multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural configuration of Nigeria we believe a same faith ticket and voting along religious lines may trigger dangerous dimensions of negative consequences among our disparate peoples in ways that will hamper nation building.

“Consequently, we have agreed to channel our energies on matter that unite us more as a people instead of encouraging attacks on sensitives issues bordering on religion in the name of politics. In view of the above, we have agreed to set up a committee with the mandate to fashion out strategies for advancing the objectives set forth in this resolution.”

It listed tose present at the meeting to include Boni Haruna, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Yakubu Dogara, Lawal, Damishi Sango, Idris Ahmed Umar, Yomi Awoniyi and Simon Achuba.

Others are Ummara Kumalia, Baba Shehu Agaie, Monday Morgan, Ishaya Bauka, Mohammed Sani Sidi, John Bawa, Iliya Stephen Msheliza, Sarah Allabeh-Nanpon, Shina Ibiyemi and Auwalu Anwar, among others.

 

Hoodlums Who Allegedly Raped, Robbed Kwara Students Arrested With 87 Phones

Police operatives from the Kwara State command on Sunday said they arrested three suspects who allegedly robbed and raped some female students of the Kwara State University, Malete, in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The suspects are Ridwan Abdulfatai (20); Ibrahim Akorede (25) and Aliyu Apalado (25), all from the Oke Fomo area, Ilorin.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement, said the arrest followed complaints by some female students that they were robbed in their hostel at Malete in the midnight of Friday, October 7, 2022.

“In carrying out the directive of the CP after receiving another report of an armed robbery attack from three females, all 400-level students of the Kwara State University, Malete, that they were all robbed at their hostel called ‘Downtown’ by armed hoodlums and their property forcefully carted away.

“While approaching the suspected hideout of the gang, the team was sighted by the hoodlums and the armed robbers took to their heels. One Ridwan Abdulfatai, aged 20, from Oke Fomo, Ilorin, was arrested by the detectives.

“Consequently, the suspect, under intense interrogation, confessed he was the leader of a robbery gang terrorising the Malete community and its environs, stating also that he was a jail bird.

“He led investigators to effect the arrest of two other members of the gang, Ibrahim Ridwan Akorede, 25, of Oke Fomo area of Ilorin, and Aliyu Abubakar Apalado, 25; they all confessed to the crimes.

“The investigation also led to the recovery of the following items: one locally-made gun, one jackknife and charms, 11 generators, two motorcycles, one small fridge, one standing fan and one pumping machine.

“Nineteen iPhones, six handsets, three iPhone11, 16 iPhone 6 plus, five iPhone XR, and other telephone handsets, altogether totalling 87 handsets; 10 laptops and two television sets, were recovered.”

Okasanmi said the police commissioner had promised to charge the suspects to court at the conclusion of investigation.

Ibrahim Magu, former Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has said his exit from the anti-corruption agency is not justifiable.

Magu made the assertion at an award ceremony the Northern Female Students Association organised in his honour in Abuja on Sunday.

“I am a victim of corruption fighting back, but I am happy that recent events are revealing the truth to Nigerians,” he said.

Magu, who was represented by his son, Mr Mohammad-Saeed Ibrahim-Magu, thanked the association for conferring on him the award of “Achiever per Excellence’’ and said that he was happy to receive the award.

Ms Aisha Nasir, spokesperson of the association, which comprises female students of universities in the northern parts of Nigeria, explained that Magu was unanimously chosen for the award for his dedication to national service.

“The anti-corruption fight in Nigeria is a binding moral duty that requires seeing beyond political affiliations or preferences.

“Love him or hate him, Ibrahim Magu took the anti-corruption fight to uncharted levels where many people thought could never be attained.

“Magu attracted continental and global commendations for tackling what had been described as the leading factor hindering growth and development of African nations and economies,’’ Nasir said.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the award came on the heels of the October 4 judgment of the FCT High Court delivered by Justice Yusuf Halilu.

Justice Halilu exonerated Magu of a false claim that Pastor Emmanuel Omale of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry, and his wife, Deborah, laundered N573 million for the former EFCC boss.

The money was said to have been used by the cleric to buy a property for Magu in Dubai.

The judgment was delivered on the suit marked: FCT/HC/CV2541/2020 filed by Omale, his wife and the church against First City Monument Bank (FCMB).

During the investigation of Magu by the retired Justice Isa Salami-led presidential investigation panel, it was claimed that an investigation by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, revealed that Magu paid N573million into Omale’s church’s account.

Justice Halilu noted in his judgement, however, that the evidence before his court showed that Omale’s bank admitted error in its report to the NFIU, of entries in Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry’s account.

The judge further held that the bank claimed that the purported N573 million was wrongly reflected as credit entry into the church’s account by its reporting system, which it recently upgraded.

Justice Halilu noted that the bank admitted the error, which occasioned incalculable damage to the reputation of Pastor Omale, his wife and their church within and outside the country.

He also awarded the sum of N540.5 million as a cost to Omale against the bank for the falsely generated weekly report of a “suspicious’’ credit inflow of N573.2 million.

Suspected Internet Fraudsters Nabbed For Allegedly Killing 40-Year-Old Man In Ogun

Two suspected internet fraudsters otherwise known as yahoo boys, have reportedly butchered a 40-year-old man Abdullahi Azeez and used him for money making ritual.

The suspects, Friday Odeh, 21, and Poso Idowu, 20, were arrested at their hideout in Owode-Egba, three months after they allegedly committed the crime .

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said a relative of the victim lodged a complaint of the victim missing to policemen at Owode-Egba divisional headquarters on the 9th of June 2022 .

The PPRO added that the family member reported that the victim left his home at Kobape area on the 8th of June 2022 and did not return since then.

He said, “Upon the report, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, directed the anti-kidnapping unit of the state Criminal Investigation Department to take over the investigation and unravel the mystery behind the sudden disappearance of the man.

“In compliance with the CP’s directive, the SP Taiwo Opadiran-led team subsequently embarked on a technical and intelligence based investigation which led them to the hideout of Friday Abinya Odeh, on the September 22, 2022, where the Airtel sim card of the victim was recovered.

“His arrest led to the apprehension of his accomplice, Poso Idowu.

“On interrogation, the suspects confessed that they kidnapped the victim on the June 8, 2022, at Kobape area, at about 7:30pm, from where they forcefully took him to the bush, killed him and butchered his body to pieces.

“They confessed further that it was one herbalist simply identified as Arab money who they claimed to have contacted on Facebook that prescribed the ritual for them.

“All efforts to recover the remains of the victim proved abortive as the suspects claimed to have disposed it.”

Oyeyemi said the commissioner of police, had directed that the suspects be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.
