High Chief Daniel Okeke has congratulated the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Nkeiruka Onyejeocha as she receives national honour from The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawmaker was among those honoured on Tuesday by President Muhammadu Buhari with the award of Officer of the Order of the Niger(OON).

The APC candidate for House of Representatives, Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency described The deputy Chief Whip as a reliable and progressive ally in his felicitation message.

“I, on behalf of my family and my constituents, wish to join all well-meaning Abians as well as Nigerians to celebrate a quintessential woman, Rt Hon Nkeiruka Onyejiocha member representing Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency having been found worthy by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to confer on her a national honour; Officer of the Order of the Niger(OON).

“This did not come to me as a surprise having known your unprecedented track record of achievements in different sectors of the nation, especially in the aviation industry.

“As a politician and Deputy Chief Whip in the green chamber, you have worked so hard to maintain unity and cohesion among our party members, attracted different projects, and sponsored many bills that have touched and uplifted the well-being of the common man within and outside your constituency,” Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Chief Okeke, Oti Maduabuchi Orieji said in a statement.

Chief Okeke said Rt. Hon. Onyejeocha has consistently demonstrated competence, class, commitment and what quality representation is all about.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his administration’s resolve to root out banditry, criminality, terrorism, and insurgence in the country.

The President stated this in Abuja at the award of investiture to deserving Nigerians.

He expressed delight that despite the hardship being faced, a good number of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria had been demonstrating active patriotism to improve living standards.

He stressed that the award of titles of honour and decorations to deserving dignitaries was a solemn and patriotic event to recognise those that had distinguished themselves in the service of the nation and humanity in accordance with the National Honours Act of 2004.

While congratulating the awardees, President Buhari appreciated non-Nigerian recipients and assured them of the government’s will to continue to provide the enabling environment for them to undertake their lawful businesses.

He appealed to Nigerians yet to receive recognition to be patient and understand that their efforts in nation-building were appreciated and that at the right time, they would be recognised.

The Awards

The award in order of importance are: Order of the Federal Republic, consisting of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Also, in the Order of the Niger, are Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and Federal Republic Medal (FRM).

The GCFR and GCON are customarily reserved and bestowed on former Presidents and Vice Presidents of Nigeria, including former military heads of state of Nigeria and Chiefs of General Staff.

The GCON is also customarily bestowed on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the President of the Nigerian Senate during their first year in office, while the CON is customarily bestowed on Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The 2022 list includes politicians, public officers, security officials, diplomats, academia, businessmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders and legal practitioners among others.

The six conferred with GCON are Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan; Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola; immediate past CJN, Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (Rtd); former Minister of Finance and currently Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala; a former Minister of Environment and currently UN, Deputy Secretary General, Ms Amina J. Mohammed and former President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prof. Tijani Muhammad-Bande.

Also honoured are Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara; late Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari (Posthumous) and former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami (Retd) among others.

Others are the 19th Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli and Registrar of JAMB, Prof Is-haq Oloyede among others.

Seven Foreigners

Seven persons were given FRM I and FRM II respectively.

Also, seven foreigners Pierre Vandebeek, late George Stavros Coumantaros (Posthumous), Deepak Singhal, Dr. Attia A. Nasreddin, Chief Nabil A. Saleh (JP), Faysal M. El-Khalil and Ronald Chagoury would be honoured with OFR.

Others are the religious leader who hid over 262 Christians in his mosque from attacks in Yelwa Gindin Akwati village, in Plateau State, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, whom he described as a good example of religious tolerance, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy, who won the Grammy Awards in 2020.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has said that his party would defeat both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 presidential poll.

While addressing a mammoth crowd at the inauguration of the Kano State NNPP campaign office on Sunday, Kwankwaso said, “This crowd signifies the need and urge for new leadership, not only in the state but the country at large. The biggest surprise will come when our party, the NNPP wins the 2023 presidential election, God willing.”

Kwankwaso said by 2023, all students would smile and be back in school.

He said, “Those of you supposed to be in primary school will have access to free education, the university students will be back to school, while outstanding secondary students stand the opportunity for scholarship in both Nigeria and foreign universities.”

Party supporters, candidates, businessmen and celebrities defied the scorching heat as they waited for Kwankwaso, chanting his name; a situation that caused major roads in Kano city to stand still.

“I wish to use this opportunity to introduce to you our candidates for the various elective positions in Kano before I come back during campaigns. We have the most qualified candidates for both executive and legislative positions,” he said.

Harrysong Calls Out Kcee Over Unpaid Royalties, Unreleased Songs

Singer Harry Okiri, popularly known as Harrysong, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State.

In a post on his Instagram Story on Tuesday, Harrysong said that he was arrested when he landed into the state.

The terse statement signed by his management noted that the singer’s phone was seized at the point of arrest.

The post read, “I got arrested as I landed in Lagos. My phone has been seized and they won’t allow me to communicate with my people.”

This is coming barely a week after Harrysong had accused music executive, Soso Soberekon, of trying to kill him.

In a talk show published last Monday, Harrysong had tagged Soberekon as his enemy who attempted to assassinate him (Harrysong).

Reacting to the accusation, Soberekon, through his lawyers, sent a defamation notice to Harrysong, where he demanded N500m as compensation.

The notice partly read, “Our client has consequently directed us to request for a retraction of the said publication and an apology to be published in two newspapers and several online news millets not later than seven days of the delivery of this letter and also the payment of the sum of N500,000,000.00 (Five Hundred Million Naira) as damages and compensation for the malicious publications made against our client.

“TAKE NOTICE that if you fail to heed the request of our client within seven days of the receipt of this letter, we shall be constrained to proceed to the court of law against you for exemplary damages for injurious falsehood and malicious publication made of and concerning our client.”

Harrysong’s arrest may not be unconnected to the suit as today (Tuesday), marks the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum meted to the singer.

Resident Youths Demand Fair Treatment From Dangote Over Obajana Plant

Obajana: Kogi Accused Dangote Of Asset Grabbing

Angry youths of Kabba junction/Zariagi, one of the host communities of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana plant, have staged a peaceful protest around the community to demand fair treatment from Dangote Group.

The protest, which commenced at exactly 8am on Tuesday, saw youths in their hundreds gather at the junction opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps office with placards with different inscriptions demanding a fair deal from Dangote industry.

The spokesman of the protesting youths, Abubarkar Ahmed, who spoke with our correspondent, said the purpose of the protest was to show their grievance concerning the treatment being meted out to the community.

“Look at our roads. We have a lot of graduates roaming the street without jobs whereas Dangote Cement is employing thousands from outside the state.

“It may shock you that there is no single hospital in this community. No water, no single school. We are deprived of several amenities and we are saying enough of these exploitation from Dangote. If they are not ready to listen to us, let them return Obajana Cement to us.”

He appealed to the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to help retrieve the company for the state so that the citizens of the state can enjoy the benefits that rightly belong to them.

Also speaking, student leader, Comrade Bello Abdulrazak, said their grievance was that since when Obajana was changed to Dangote Cement, their people had been suffering.

”Dangote trailers have destroyed our roads without repairs. They have been killing our students without any compensation; no scholarships for students.

”We are appealing to the state government to fight for our interest so that we can get what rightfully belongs to us as host communities and as a state,” Abdulrazak said.

Renowned scholar and Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Dr. Sam Amadi has rejected his appointment as Director of Research for the 2023  Election Presidential Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to him, he was declining the offer because of conflict of interest emanating from various responsibilities in which he acts as a leader of different platforms where political neutrality and objectivity are required of him.

Amadi stated these in his letter dated October 10, 2022, addressed to the Director-General, PDP Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, titled, ‘Non-acceptance of appointment as Director of Research for the Peoples Democratic Party PCC’, obtained by The PUNCH in Abuja on Tuesday.

The letter partly read, “First, many thanks for the offer to be the Director of Research for the PDP Presidential Campaign Committee for the 2023 presidential election. I consider it a great honour to be considered fit for such a high office of a great presidential committee. I am also delighted that the committee is headed by a man of your character and pedigree, someone I have had the honour and privilege of working with in the past. I have no doubt that you will, as always, make a huge success of this opportunity.

“Notwithstanding that I am honoured to be appointed as one of the directors to work with you, I humbly want to decline the appointment, and hereby abstain from participating in such a role. The decision to decline the offer has stemmed from the conflicts of interest emanating from various responsibilities in which I act as a leader of different platforms where political neutrality and objectivity are required of me.

“These platforms are as follows: The Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts (ASSPT):

As Director of the school, I bear the responsibility to lead a group of intellectuals and scholars of diverse political and ideological stripes with a commitment to rethink the nature of the social, political, and economic crises of statehood in Africa, and to develop new ideas and policies to transform Nigeria and other African societies.

“The school is working on a detailed review of the economic plans of the leading candidates and their manifestos on how to enhance Nigeria’s electoral democracy. This clearly requires me to maintain a high degree of non-partisanship.

“The Political and Strategy Committee of the Christian Association of Nigeria: As the Secretary of the Committee, I bear responsibility to support other distinguished Christian leaders to guide the leadership of the Christian community to work together with leaders of other faiths to fashion a common agenda for justice, freedom, unity, and prosperity of the Nigerian state.

“As part of this responsibility, I helped to put together The Charter for A New Nigeria, a non-partisan, not denominational Christian vision of justice, fairness, freedom, and prosperity for all Nigerian peoples and citizens. Members of the committee have different political views and interests, and my leadership needs to be non-partisan in order to be effective.

“An acceptance of this appointment will undermine the neutrality expected of my standing and membership of the committee.

“Arise News: For some years I have been an analyst on Arise News, which I consider one of the most strategic institutions for national development and sane deliberative democracy through analytical news reporting. My role in that reputable media platform also requires non-partisanship, even as I am free to express my opinions. I greatly cherish these institutional roles and believe that they require me to maintain the non-partisanship posture that has allowed me to provide insights that have helped both institutions and critical stakeholders deliver on their mandates.

“Whereas as a policy expert, I am free to offer ideas and insights to a presidential campaign, I believe that the level of objectivity I am identified with in these strategic roles will be compromised if I am to become a director of a political party’s presidential campaign.

“I know that in developed democracies, non-partisans are often co-opted into presidential campaigns to offer professional services without compromising their objectivity and intellectual neutrality. But Nigeria is not yet at this stage in our politics.

“In all these premises, again, I humbly plead that I will not be able to accept the offer and appointment.

“My rejection of the offer is in no way a vote of no-confidence in the PDP presidential campaign or a rejection of the virtues of the members of that great party and its presidential candidate.”

Flood Sacks Bayelsa Communities, Residents Flee

Hundreds of residents have fled their homes and communities as the flooding intensified in most parts of  Bayelsa, including the state capital, Yenagoa. Many of the residents, who have lost their homes and properties to the surging flood lamented that the government’s failure to clear the canals and drainages worsened the situation in most parts of the state capital.

Many others whose homes have been sacked blamed the state government for not taking quick proactive measures since the warning of the flood from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which produces the seasonal climate prediction (SCP) annually in fulfillment of its statutory responsibility to advise the government.

Most of the canals and drainages in the state capital are still blocked as of the time of this report without any plan by the government to clear them.

It was only last week that the state government set up a Task Force to mitigate the flooding which has already devastated many communities and neighbouring states.

As of the time of filling this report most homes and communities in the state capital and neighbouring towns and villages are presently under siege as the flooding intensified in the in the past one week.

Hundreds of residents have left their homes and communities for safer abode as the flooding continues to grow every day, while those who have no relatives to stay in non-flooded areas have left the state.

A policeman, who was alleged to have borrowed money from a bank to buy land and build a two-bedroom apartment in Ogbogoro community in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, has lost his entire building to the flood.

Sergeant Samson Akpolobode, who narrated his ordeal to our correspondent said he is yet to complete the payment of the loan before the small self-contain bungalow was swallowed by erosion.

Sergeant Samson, who is now homeless, said his wife and five children have relocated to stay with relatives in his village in Agiama, Sagbama Local  Government Area of the state, while he has since went back to Ogun State, where he is presently serving the country.

The police sergeant, who many of his neighbours and colleagues see as a respectable policeman and a faithful Christian, called on the state and federal government to come to the rescue of his family.

However, responding to the emergency, the State Task Force on Flood Mitigation and Management, at the weekend, visited some affected communities for an on-the-spot assessment..

Communities visited in Yenagoa and Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Areas included; Tombia-Ekpetiama, Odi, Sampou, Kaiama, Gbaranma  Sabagreia, Okoloba, Biseni, and neighbouring communities as well as some areas within the Yenagoa metropolis.

Speaking after the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment and Chairman of the Task Force, Iselema Gbaranbiri, lamented the impact of the flooding in the Biseni community, which he said was almost totally submerged.

Gbaranbiri sympathised with people of the area on behalf of the Governor, who he said was passionate about their well-being hence the setting up of the task force on flood mitigation on Wednesday during the state executive council meeting.

On the situation in parts of Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA such as Odi and Sampou, Gbaranbiri said both communities were relatively safe at the moment due to the water barrier built by the government while areas like Gbarama, Sabagreia, Okoloba and Kaiama were heavily impacted with institutions such as the Ijaw National Academy, the Girls Secondary School in Kaiama and the Bayelsa State Sports Institute at Asoama flooded.

The Environment Commissioner explained that the essence of the on-the-spot assessment was to get first-hand information about the situation and identify areas of need for government to provide succour to the people.

While calling on the federal government to assist the state government in alleviating the sufferings of victims, he stated that other local government areas will be visited and that succour would be provided for those affected in form of the building of higher grounds, provision of relief materials and medicals.

The beneficiaries who weeks ago departed Nigeria are to study Medicine and Surgery in a foreign university.

The students in a commendation letter signed by its President, Idika Michael, appreciated Sen. Kalu the Senate Chief Whip and former governor of Abia State for his developmental strides across the senatorial district, assuring him of their continuous support.

The statement read in part, “I write on behalf of the Abia North Students Association-National (ANSA) to specially commend you for the opportunity given to four (4) Abia North students to study in South America at the Venezuela’s prestigious University, Latinoamerican Medical School-Escuela.

“Also, I want to specially remark on your efforts in repositioning Abia North since you came on board as our Senator, specifically your efforts in the education sector which has earned our students’ various educational materials and support.

“Your Excellency, you have always been guided by the philosophy of a true Public Officer through your high sense of dedication, selflessness, and integrity, which you brought to bear in your Public Service career, especially as our Senator.

Five beneficiaries of the scheme sponsored by Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation who recently depart Nigeria include, Favour Chimeremeze Chukwu, Tukur Ana’s Ahmad, Ikenna Marvellous Kanu-Ubah, Chika Onwuka Mark and Prince Kingseed Chiziterem.

The foundation is to fully take charge of the cost of their education, accommodation, and feeding within the period of their university education.

A 16-year-old Temedi Yerimene has been killed by a surging flood that flushed him into a deep canal in Igbogene community of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The corpse is said to be still missing two days after the incident.

It was gathered that the deceased, who was in company with his friends, went swimming in the rising water close to the State Ecumenical Centre, Igbogene but was overpowered by the surging tide of the water which flushed him into the huge canal.

It was learnt that efforts by the community’s search team to locate him dead or alive proved futile as half of the community has been submerged by floodwaters.

The deceased mother, identified simply as Madam Carol, said they are indigenes of Amabulu in Ojobo community of Ekeremor LGA.

She confirmed that the tragic incident happened around 11am on Saturday while she was away to the market to buy food items and ingredients to prepare their lunch.

Madam Carol said: “When I came back from the market, I was told my son had gone swimming with friends. I thought he was swimming in the rising water level at the compound. Later, one of his friends told me my son had been dragged by the flood into the canal.”

Another resident, Destiny, said the community leaders had warned parents to prevail on their kids to avoid swimming in the flood to avoid mishaps.

Investigation showed that more communities in the State have already been taken over by floods.

The disaster has wreaked havoc on the secretariat of Kolokuma/Opokuma council.
