2023: Tinubu Will Revive Nigeria’s Power Sector, Says APC Chieftain

A member of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, Tolu Bankole, on Wednesday said it would take someone with grits and strong will like the Presidential Candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu, to revive the power sector and ensure Nigerians enjoy steady electricity.

Bankole made the bold claim in a statement issued on Wednesday encouraging Tinubu to help stabilise the national power crisis by building on the robust foundation laid by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Buhari had during the budget presentation on Friday highlighted the transformational strides that have been made in Nigeria’s challenging power sector including the Siemens Power Programme with the German government under which over $2b will be invested in the transmission grid.

Bankole said, “No one is better prepared to sustain these gains than an APC administration led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a pioneering feat in 2000, Tinubu partnered with AES Nigeria to build an Independent Power Plant to generate 270MW for Lagos residents.

“The power generated was consumed locally but later transmitted to the national grid due to some challenges in the operational framework in the energy sector.

“With a Tinubu President in 2023, the new administration will continue his trail-blazing partnership and encourage active private sector involvement in the generation and distribution of electricity. Energy experts have revealed that with the required maintenance and monitoring, state electricity markets will undoubtedly influence an increase in GDP growth of 12 per cent.”

Bankole, who is also the National Leader of Persons With Disabilities in APC admitted that Nigeria has made some level of progress in significant investments that have led to an incremental 4,000MW of power-generating assets including Zungeru Hydro, Kashimbila Hydro, Afam III Fast Power, Kudenda Kaduna Power Plant, Okpai Phase 2 Plant, Dangote Refinery Power Plant and others.

He further disclosed that the APC candidate will emphasise generation of an environmentally friendly power in different parts of the country taking advantage of the natural endowment and peculiarities of each state in tandem with the call for state electricity markets.

“A vote for Tinubu presidency in 2023 General elections is a vote for competency in solving the endemic power sector crisis once and for all in a manner that will lead to comprehensive, affordable, available, safe and constant power for Nigerian homes, investments and industries,” he said.

Education Should Not Be Seen As A Business Venture To Make Monetary Gains - Dr. Damilola

An education administrator and Proprietress of Mummy’s Place International Nursery and Primary School, Akure, Ondo State, Dr. Damilola Oshin, has called on the stakeholders in the education sector in the country to take education more seriously.

She said education should not be seen as a business venture to make monetary gains but to be seen as a service rendered for the betterment of the society.

The administrator stated this in the school, in Akure, the state capital, while speaking after the school received an award as the winner of the Best Private School in Nigeria. It was gathered that the award was organised by the Federal Ministry of Education to commemorate the 2022 World Teachers’ Day celebration, in Abuja.

According to Oshin, education should be more of passion to add value and render services to the society rather than the general trend to make it a business venture.

She noted that the love for children always motivated the management team of the school to make lots of sacrifices to ensuring excellence and huge investment in infrastructure development.

She said, “Love helps the helpless to see that there is help somewhere. It is a very important aspect of humanity, children need loads of love and we should be there for them.

“Education services should not be business-oriented, it is a calling to nurture children, build them and get them to a place of independence. Education services must get to all strata of the economy.

“We’ve been trying to keep the standards, this year is just a year that we are recognised and we will just keep doing what we have been doing. They came from Abuja to look at our facilities and they were surprised, the children are neat, cultured and loving.

“We will continue to be focused and committed, we won’t relent to bring out the potentials in the students,” she said.

Decrying the dwindling level of educational standard and industrial actions in the country, the proprietress lamented that it was worrisome that these were happening in Nigeria.

“Every parent should be worried because of the ASUU strike, it is painful and worrisome to see that their education is affected because of strike.

“The only way is to continue to pray. Parents should get the children engaged in anyway because an idle hand is the devil’s workshop,” she opined

In her remarks, Director of Quality Assurance, Ondo State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Dunni Famewo, described the award as a well-deserved recognition for hard work and excellence, saying the school had made the state proud.

FCCPC Promise To Prevent Substandard Cough Syrup Into the Country

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it will work with relevant authorities to prevent the entry or sale of substandard cough syrups in the country’s market.

A statement issued by Mr Babatunde Irukera, the Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC in Abuja on Thursday, advised stakeholders to comply strictly with NAFDAC’s protocols identified in the agency’s Regulations and Guidelines.

Irukera said that the National Agency For Food And Drug Administration And Control had issued a warning to importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to refrain from the importation, distribution, sale and use of four cough syrups.

He said the cough syrups were made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals and manufactured in India.

According to him, the products include Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

“In strengthening and further propagating the alert and warning by NAFDAC, the FCCPC hereby and now issues this advisory.

“In particular, advising any relevant stakeholder to comply strictly with NAFDAC protocols identified in NAFDAC’s release or Regulations and Guidelines.

“NAFDAC’s warning is consistent with a global medical product alert issued by the World Health Organisation on Oct. 5, which linked the death of sixty-six children in The Gambia to the said cough syrups.

“Reports indicate that the medications were exclusively delivered to The Gambia.

“The existence of informal and uncontrolled marketplaces, mutual regional trade liberalisation policies, including under Treaty obligations make it conceivable, and certainly not improbable that exposure in Nigeria could occur,’’ he said.

Irukera urged citizens who preferred contacting the Commission on the matter to forward same to [email protected] for onward transmission to NAFDAC.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that NAFDAC had on Oct. 11, raised an alarm over the use of four cough syrups linked to acute kidney injuries and death of children in The Gambia.

Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday, declared that it is time for the Peoples Democratic Party to take back the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress, for the people of the state.

Speaking at Kwara Talk Show titled ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ of our dream, organised by Jamaa Group for Yaman/Makanjuola candidacy for the 2023 gubernatorial election in Ilorin, the state capital, the former governor challenged Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq to engage in a public debate with the governorship candidate of the PDP if he is courageous enough to account for his stewardship since 2019.

Saraki asked Abdulrazaq to render an account of his achievements in office since 2019, or “count himself as disqualified in the race for his re-election in 2023.”

He charged stakeholders and party members to embark on a massive campaign for the party’s gubernatorial candidacy and presidential candidate of the party in the bid to ensure total victory for the party.

He added that all campaign promises made by the ruling APC state government have not been fulfilled three years after being in power.

Saraki said the PDP years in the state were characterized by feasible achievements, which include, Aviation College, Kwara State University, Malete, Diagnostic Centre, education, agriculture and health sectors among others.

“PDP’s achievements in the past years cannot be dismissed in a hurry, hence I call on you to vote for competent candidates that we shall be proud of as our representatives.

“Let us rebuild the state by voting for the right candidates because the difference between Kwara of yesterday and today is very clear as we match towards a brighter tomorrow,” he said.

On his part, the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Yaman Abdullahi, said PDP intends to chart a better future for children and the youths by creating opportunities for them.

“In the bid to rescue Kwara from the doldrums, if we need to crawl, we shall crawl, if we need to jump, we shall jump, and if we need to run, we shall run.

” I will be transparent, open and accessible,” adding that a prosperous Kwara state is possible if we work together and I am elected in 2023 as governor of the state.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is “a crusade against what Putin calls the collective West,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.

“All along Vladimir Putin and his enablers have made one thing very clear, this war is not only about Ukraine, they consider the war against Ukraine as part of a larger crusade,” Scholz said in a pre-recorded virtual speech at the Progressive Governance Summit.

“A crusade against liberal democracy, a crusade against the rules based on liberal order, a crusade against freedom and progress. A crusade against our way of life, a crusade against what Putin calls the collective West,” he said.

Scholz added that Germany will support Ukraine financially, economically and for humanitarian and military needs.

“Including heavy weaponry, modern air defense system and tanks and make no mistakes we will continue our support as long as it takes,” he said.

On Wednesday, Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck said he is convinced Putin’s attempt to destabilize Europe’s economic order will fail.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow is “making every effort to provide critical products” to countries impacted by recent volatility in prices, while speaking at a summit in Kazakhstan on Thursday.

“Other regional associations have to deal with many acute problems, including the increased volatility in world prices for energy resources, food, fertilizers, raw materials and other important goods,” Putin said while delivering remarks at the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) summit in the Kazakh capital Astana.

“This leads to a deterioration in the quality of life in developed and developing countries. Moreover, there is a real threat of famine and widespread social upheaval, especially in the poorest countries.”

“Russia, for its part, is making every effort to provide critical products to countries in need. We call for the elimination of all artificial, illegitimate barriers to the restoration of the normal functioning of global supply chains in order to address urgent food security challenges,” Putin said.

The Russian leader did not reference the war in Ukraine in his remarks. However, he again criticized NATO for the “failure of their policies,” referencing their role in Afghanistan.

“After more than 20 years of the military presence of the United States and NATO [in Afghanistan], the failure of their policies, was unable to independently resolve the problems associated with terrorist threats,” Putin said.

Putin said that, together with other Asian countries, Russia is looking to form a “system of equal and indivisible security based on the universally recognized principles of international law of the UN Charter.”

Some context: Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February sent the prices of energy and other commodities soaring.

In the case of wheat, prices later fell back sharply after spiking to an all-time high in March, as investors cheered a deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey to restart exports of grain from key Ukrainian ports.

However, natural gas prices increased further as Russia toyed with supply to Europe via key pipelines and heat waves pushed up electricity usage, with the economic impact of the war in Ukraine still being felt around the world.

Gunmen Kill Resident, Abduct One, Hijack Car In Abuja

At least, one person was shot dead by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers at about 8:45pm, on Wednesday, at Gana Street in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, while another was abducted.

Some residents, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the victim was killed while trying to rescue a man that was being forced into a black Prado SUV by the gunmen.

The source noted that the SUV was parked at Gana Street, where the victim was shot in the head by one of the gunmen, leading to instant death.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that the suspects escaped with a victim while the body of the deceased was still on the street during the night.

Sources suspected young men who usually loitered around the area, adding that in recent times, supermarkets and pharmaceutical stores in Maitama had become their targets. This was as residents alleged that the police had abandoned the area despite complaints.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, claimed that the police was investigating the incident, while denying the allegation of abandonment.

She said, “We are investigating the incident, but it is not true that the police have not been doing anything to secure pharmacies in the area, as alleged. The Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, has been working round the clock to ensure that the FCT is safe and secured for everyone to go about their businesses.”

A police source, however, noted that it was a car theft.

He said, “It was a case of car theft. The armed robbers probably traced the man to the location because he had just purchased the car. They tried to snatch car from him, in the process, the guy who was shot believed that it was a street fight, unknown to him, it was a robbery, and he was shot. He was later rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he died.

“The man that was abducted was later found, and he is getting better now. The police were with him last night and we’re doing our best to track the car as we believe it will be useless to them, and the car will definitely stop somewhere.”
