UK Home Secretary Resigns After Use Of Personal Email For Official Duty

Suella Braverman has resigned from her appointment as the home secretary for the United Kingdom (UK).

The decision was contained in a letter Braverman addressed to Liz Truss, UK’s prime minister.

According to the letter, Braverman said she sent a draft ministerial statement that had not been published from her personal email to a parliamentary colleague to get support for her policy.

She described the action as a constitution of “a technical infringement of the rules”.

“It is with the greatest regret that I am choosing to tender my resignation,” the letter reads.

“Earlier today, I sent an official document from my personal email to a trusted parliamentary colleague as part of policy engagement, and with the aim of garnering support for government policy on migration. This constitutes a technical infringement of the rules.

“As you know, the document was a draft written ministerial statement about migration, due for publication imminently. Much of it had already been briefed to MPs. Nevertheless, it is right for me to go.

“As soon as I realized my mistake, I rapidly reported this on official channels and informed the cabinet secretary. As home secretary, I hold myself to the highest standards and my resignation is the right thing to do.

“The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes. Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics. I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.

“It is obvious to everyone that we are going through a tumultuous time. I have concerns about the direction of this government. Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this government’s commitment to honoring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particularly the dangerous small boats crossings.

“It has been a great honour to serve at the home office. In even the brief time that I have been here, it has been very clear that there is much to do, in terms of delivering on the priorities of the British people.

“They deserve policing they can respect, an immigration policy they want and voted for in such unambiguous numbers at the last election, and laws which serve the public good, and not the interests of selfish protestors.

“I am very grateful to all of my officials, special advisers, and ministerial team for all of their help during my time as home secretary. I especially would like to pay tribute to the heroic policemen and women and
all those who work at the border force and in our security services.

“To oversee Operation Bridges – the largest policing operation in a generation – was a great honour and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve. I wish my successor good luck.”

Braverman’s resignation comes 43 days after her appointment as home secretary.

Meanwhile, Truss has accepted her resignation.

“I accept your resignation and respect the decision you have made. It is important that the ministerial code is upheld, and that cabinet confidentiality is respected,” the UK prime minister said in a letter.

Braverman’s departure comes as Truss faces intense pressure to resign amid chaos in the UK’s financial markets.

The development also comes days after the UK prime minister sacked Kwasi Kwarteng, chancellor of the exchequer, after 38 days in office.

Meanwhile, until her resignation, Braverman was vocal about her “aspirations” to cut the overall migration figure amid a growing clamour for the government to take control of immigration levels.

She had also said she would change the law to stop migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Grant Shapps, former transport secretary, is expected to take over as home secretary.

Gov. Soludo Inaugurates LG Service Commission

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constituted Local Government Service Commission in Anambra.

Soludo, who performed the ceremony at the Governor’s Lodge, charged members of the Commission to reposition the sector.

“We want to go back to the Local Government system because it has not been anywhere near where it’s supposed to be,” he said.

Soludo said he envisaged a local government that would deliver effective service to the people in terms of structure and being the representative at the grassroots.

He said the development of the State would not be driven by the state government alone, but also by the active participation of the local government system such that markets and other institutions had roles to play.

The governor said that he was pleased to inaugurate the team, as members were carefully selected based on experience and knowledge.

“The JAAC committee has a limited technical job which is simply to manage joint domiciled accounts. That’s their important and technical responsibility.

“In matters of appointment, promotion and transfer; the entire system of the Local Government needs to work, and that lies with you.

“We are determined to invigorate and delegate responsibilities to the local governments so that they can be more responsible for waste management and a host of others.

“Congratulations and commiserations, to manage in difficult times when resources are lean because of the weight of the job that awaits you,” he said.

The committee is chaired by Chief Ifeanyi Ezeaka, with Mr. Azubuike Okoye, Mr. Edwin Okafor, Prof. Ngozi Ewuim, Mrs. Anthonia Tabansi-Okoye as members.

Gov. Bala Mohammed Warns PDP Members Against Anti-Party Activities

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, on Wednesday, warned members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state against anti-party activities.

Mohammed gave the warning during the inauguration ceremony of the PDP Presidential and Governorship joint campaign council in the state.

The governor assured the people of Bauchi of level playing ground for the peaceful conduct of forthcoming general elections in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 600 member-council, which has 31sub committees is to be chaired by Mohammed himself, the PDP Chairman Hamza Akuya. serves as Deputy Chairman while Alhaji Faruq Ahmed is the Director-General.

Others are the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Nuhu Zaki, who will serve as the Deputy Director General (Operations), Pharmacist Samila Brugga (Deputy D-G (Administration), and Hassan Gamawa (Deputy D-G (Technical)

Mohammed urged members to close ranks and ensure that the PDP wins massively from ‘bottom to top.

“Our party remains the strongest and most popular political party which has the capacity of winning elective positions.

”The supporters that thronged the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium when our Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar visited the state is a clear indication that the PDP remains strong in the state.

”I pledge to mobilize 100 percent votes from Bauchi and mobilize the entire north for Atiku in 2023,” he said.

While assuring commitment to consolidate the achievements recorded by his administration, Mohammed also solicited the support of all the electorate for his reelection and all the candidates of the party in the state for the next election.

In his remark earlier, Akuyam, asked for forgiveness of any member who felt aggrieved in the last primary election of the party in the state.

Akuyam assured that with the excellent performance of the PDP administration in the state, the party will secure victory at the polls and urged the faithful to work hard to ensure victory for PDP at the polls.

Also speaking on behalf of the Campaign Council, Ahmed, who is the former APC Gubernatorial Aspirant, assured to mobilize the required voters towards the success of all PDP candidates.

“I want to reiterate our commitment to consolidate on the achievements recorded by our administration and I hereby, solicit the support of all the electorates across the state for the reelection of our administration,” he said.

All is now set for the final burial of Sir Chief Micah E. Onyebuchi, the father of Prof. Azubike Onyebuchi, the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

He died at the graceful age of 90 on July 9, 2022, and will be laid to rest on Oct 27, in his community Amuzukwu Ibeku, Umuahia Abia State.

A burial arrangement announced by the family indicates a tribute day will hold at All Saints Methodist Church, Amuzukwu Ibeku, Umuahia on Sunday, Oct 23 from 3pm-6pm.

On Tuesday, Oct 25 there will be a service of songs in his honour at his compound, Umuokoo, Amuzukwu Ibeku, Umuahia Abia State starting from 6pm-8pm.

Chief Micah was a seasoned educationist who brought his wealth of experience to bear as the then Executive Chairman of Abia State Universal Education Board (ASUBEB) and urged the bereaved family to uphold all that the deceased lived for as a way of preserving his legacies.

Interpol Systems Consultant and security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has condemned the refusal of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to release to detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, accusing him of attempts to create a jungle situation.

He said in a society where orders of the court are treated with contempt, it is a recipe for people to resort to self-help which in his own words does not augur well for the entire country.

Sir Udensi was reacting to a recent release by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami in which he said that Nnamdi Kanu was only partially released and that the Federal Government is exploring options to press further charges against the IPOB leader.

A three-man panel of Justices of the Appeal Court had a week ago discharged and acquitted Nnamdi Kanu of all charges levelled against him by the federal government, including terrorism-related charges.

Featuring on Love FM’s Open Parliament in Umuahia on Wednesday streamed and monitored by ABN TV, Sir Udensi, a chieftain of All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA joined the growing calls across the country and beyond to demand the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government.

If done, he said it would significantly reduce the insecurity in the South East region, saying the tension in the region is directly linked to the prolonged incarceration of the IPOB leader.

“It would bring soccour to the people and challenge the insecurity in the region, everybody will begin to have a normal way of life, and the country will start healing even before the general elections.

“I believe the government ought to know this, disobedience to court order has consequences, it will bring all kinds of discontentment, I urge the government to ensure the ruling of the Appeal Court is obeyed,” he advised.

Sir Udensi accused the federal government of continuing in its ways of lawlessness by detaining Nnamdi Kanu further, warning that it is a recipe for more deaths, lawlessness, and impunity.

“We must strive to have a peaceful society, the only way to start that process is to obey this judgement of the Appeal Court and if we don’t do that, we will not achieve peace in Southeast region. I don’t know for what purpose and intent the federal government wants to act in total variance to the judgement,” he added.

Ekiti Assembly Speaker Dies Days After Inauguration Of New Governor

Barely 48 hours after the new governor’s inauguration, Ekiti State House of Assembly has lost its Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye.

Afuye, 66 died on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest.

The state government says the Speaker passed on at the state-owned Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH)

“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest,” Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, said in a statement Wednesday.

The late Afuye was a former Commissioner of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information, and a two-time member of the State Assembly.

I Would Have Preferred To Work For Peter Obi’s Success — Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has said he would rather work for the success of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, if he were not to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Ortom stated this on Wednesday when he hosted Obi at his private residence in Abuja.

He said, “I’m in PDP and I am working for PDP but I tell you if I were not in PDP, you will see me working for Peter Obi but I am in PDP. Let’s see how things work our but the truth is that the Bible says a man can receive nothing except it is given it to him.”

According to Ortom, Obi may not have the wherewithal but if God decides no one can stop it.

He noted that Obi, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Abubakar Atiku of the PDP as the three frontline candidates for the 2023 presidential election.

Ortom urged Nigerians to elect the best among them without any sentiments.

He also urged Obi, Atiku and Tinubu to meet and agree on one of them.

Recall that the Benue state governor and top members of the PDP including Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State as well as three other governors who have been calling for PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to step aside for a southerner.

Wike and members of his camp have bicoycotted the rallies of Atiku, leaving doubts as to whether the governors will support Atiku in the February 2023 presidential election.

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to continue with the quarterly review process and assessment of ministries for the third and fourth quarters of 2022, saying the reports will form part of the transition documents of his administration to the incoming government.

The president gave the directive on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Ministerial Performance Review Retreat, preceded by his signing of Executive Order 012 on Improving Performance Management, Coordination and Implementation of Presidential Priorities.

He ordered all ministers and permanent secretaries to ensure that the performance reports of their ministries were submitted on a quarterly basis to the Office of the SGF for review by the Central Delivery Coordination Unit to achieve the objective.

“The outcome of these reviews would be made available for my consideration,” he also said.

President Buhari also warned ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies not to abandon the business of governance for electioneering, saying “any infraction will be viewed seriously.”

He told participants at the retreat that with the commencement of campaigns towards the 2023 general elections, the business of governance must continue to receive the needed attention.

“Consequently, all ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies must remain focused in the discharge of their duties, as any infraction will be viewed seriously.

“Our collective goal is to map out a transition plan for the incoming administration to ensure proper documentation of all the policies, programmes and projects of government with an up-to-date status of implementation,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has praised the Buhari-led administration for creating “lasting legacies” for the country and promised to remain a friend and ally of the president even after his tenure in 2023.

The APC presidential candidate stated this on Tuesday at the ongoing 3-day ministerial retreat for ministers and permanent secretaries in Abuja.

He said the efforts made by the Buhari administration to set the country on the right path “after years of maladministration” would never be forgotten by Nigerians even a long time after they have left.

In a statement from his media office signed by Tunde Rahman, Tinubu said, “Thank you, President Buhari and may I say thank you on behalf of all Nigerians to your entire administration, represented by all present today.

“We supported you before your first day in office. I will remain your friend and ally even after your final day at the job.”

Tension In Alaba Market As Traders Protest Extortion By RTEAN Officials

Pandemonium broke out in Alaba International Market, Ojo area of Lagos State on Wednesday, when some aggrieved traders protested extortion by members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, in the area.

This came just as a group of physically-challenged people blocked both sides of the National Stadium roads, along Funsho Williams Avenue, formerly Western Avenue, in Surulere Local Government Area.

The protesters, who claimed to be athletes, alleged exclusion from the 2022 National Sports Festival in Delta State.

Some of the disabled athletes had thronged the road leading to Teslim Balogun and National Sports facilities to express displeasure over exclusion from the event scheduled to commence on November 28.

On the Alaba clash, according to an eyewitness, the protesting traders, who were infiltrated by miscreants, were armed with various dangerous weapons such cutlasses, arrows, knives, cudgels, among others, as passers-by and other innocent residents scampered for safety.

However, there was no record of any casualty. Men of Rapid Response Squad, RRS, who were deployed have restored order.

Several people sustained various degree of injuries in the process.

Physically-challenged athletes protest

Meanwhile, in a bid to disperse the protesting athletes policemen from Lagos Command released several cannisters of teargas at the protesters.

Both incidents led to gridlock. As a result, residents alerted the police for intervention and to persuade the demonstrators to leave the road.

However, when the police arrived after all entreaties to leave the road proved abortive, resorted to firing teargas canisters at the protesters.

An eyewitnesses blamed the policemen for allowing the situation to degenerate into chaos, as the protest was initially peaceful until the police’s intervention.

President Muhammadu on Wednesday signed into law the Nigeria Startups Bills.

This is as the government has set up N10 billion Investment Fund for young innovators and also makes provision for incentives and tax holidays to encourage local innovators.

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said in recognition of the efforts of the Nigeria government in the Information Communication Technology, ICT, Microsoft has decided to train about five million Nigerians on high demands skills geared towards job creation.

He said the ICT contributed 18.42 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product, GDP this year alone, while the entire contribution of Communication and Digital Economy was 40 per cent.

He explained that the new Act was an Executive Bill initiated by President Buhari through the the collaboration of the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy and the Offoce of the Chief of Staff to the president.

He said that before the passage of the bill, young innovators from the six geo-political zones of the country were engaged, adding that the Act provides the legal and strategic framework for the innovators to make their contributions to the country.

He said that out of the seven unicorns in Africa, five are from Nigeria, adding that a market value of each unicorn worths $1billion.

A unicorn, he explained, is a privately held startup company valued at over US$1 billion.

The Minister said there will be a Presidential Council on Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship to be chaired by the President, while the Vice President serves as the vice chairman.

The Council, he further said would have membership from the government and private sectors as well as representatives from the academia.

The Council under the chairmanship of the President would help to curb the incessant harassment of the youths with laptops computers by the security agencies who are always tagged as ‘yahoo yahoo boys,’ Pantami said.
