The federal government has said claims that the flood ravaging many states of the federation is caused by Cameroon’s Lagdo dam are false.

On September 20, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the release of the Lagdo dam will cascade down to Nigeria and cause heavy flooding in 13 states.

But speaking During the ministry’s 2023 budget defence in Abuja on Wednesday, Suleiman Adamu, minister of water resources, says 80 percent of the floods in Nigeria are caused by rainfall.

He said the stories on social media attributing the floods to Cameroon are misleading.

“All these stories I’ve been seeing on social media, I just laugh, because they are misleading,” he said.

“The contribution of the Lagdo dam to flooding in this country is only one percent. Sometimes they release the water without notice and when they do that, it has an impact on communities downstream.

“But it is not the main reason we have floods in this country — 80 percent of the floods in this country is water that we are blessed with from God from the sky.

“This year’s flood, I can assure you, we cannot blame it on Cameroon to be sincere. We’ll continue to have floods on the river Niger and Benue basins. We signed the MOU with the Cameroonian authorities but since then, every year, it is the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) that calls them ‘what is your level in Lagdo?’

“Even this one when he called them, I was communicating with the DG NIHSA, I said ‘what’s happening in Cameroon?’ He said he has been calling them and they said they have not released any water but they said they will inform us. Finally, they said they will inform us tomorrow, they didn’t inform us, they informed us 24 hours after they had released the water.

“They did the same thing two years ago, I wrote to the minister of foreign affairs and Nigeria had to write a protest letter to the Cameroonian authorities that they did not inform us.

“It was after our rains had gone down, suddenly we saw floods in the Adamawa area and we were asking them. For two weeks they were denying that they had opened the reservoir. Of course, it didn’t go to the confluence, it was limited to the areas of Adamawa state and Taraba. Because like I said, the contribution to the flood by Lagdo dam is not so high.”

Meanwhile, the federal government said it will initiate bilateral discussions with Cameroonian authorities in November on the periodic opening of the dam.

Liz Truss has resigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, UK, after a month and half in office.

She just made the announcement 24 hours after saying she was a fighter and not a quitter, and so would continue in office.

Truss succeeds Boris Johnson who resigned from his appointment as PM in July over a series of scandals.

Liz Truss said she would stay on until a successor is chosen in the next week.

Truss said she was resigning from her position on Thursday after a rising chorus of members of her own Conservative Party called for her resignation.

On Wednesday, there was total chaos when her party members were shouting and swearing at each other at the Parliament.

Truss had faced political issues in the few weeks she assumed office, including two of her party members leaving their positions.

Kwasi Kwarteng was dismissed as Chancellor on October 14 and replaced by a former health Jeremy Hunt, who earlier served as a Secretary of State for Health and Social Care among other posts.

Also, the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman resigned from her office in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister following sending her “personal email to a trusted parliamentary colleague as part of policy engagement.”

In one of her toughest moments during her short spell as the British PM, Truss said, “I am a fighter and not a quitter” while responding to a question from opposition Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer yesterday.

Kaduna Rally: Blame Your Rented Crowd For Disruption, APC Tells PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has informed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to blame itself for the disruption of its rally in Kaduna on Monday.

The ruling party while distancing itself from the said incident accused the rented crowd of causing the violence.

This was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka in Abuja.

He said the violence that characterized the PDP’s rally was self-inflicted.

Morka noted that the ugly event “was wrong, but regrettably, self-inflicted”.

He said: “The PDP has no one but itself to blame for the violent incident at its rally in Kaduna. The incident was simply a matter of a rented crowd that went irate when the party’s rent-a-crowd managers disappeared with funds meant to pay for the rented crowd.”

Washing the hands of the ruling party of the violence, Morka faulted the PDP for blaming APC for the incident.

The party’s spokesman insisted that “rather than hold its head down in shame for the poor and distasteful showing at its Kaduna rally, the PDP seeks to scapegoat our party for its gross acts and misconduct”.

He added: “To be clear, the APC has no hand in the attack, as irresponsibly alleged by the PDP. We have no reason to be perturbed by the rally.

“As a party, we abhor and condemn any form of violence and interference in the activities or events of any political party. Every party is entitled to conduct their legitimate activities in peace and security. And every party has a right to equal protection under the law. Perpetrators of disruptive and other acts of violence must be brought to justice…”

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has congratulated the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the recently announced presidential campaign council list of the party, describing it as the best presidential campaign council.

Kalu, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday evening, commended President Muhammadu Bihari and the leadership of the party for inclusiveness.

He said: “Congratulations to our great party, All Progressives Congress(APC) on the release of the best Presidential Campaign Council(PCC) for Tinubu/Shettima 2023. Unlike the previous list, the new and updated PCC is comprehensive, organized, harmonized and captures all components necessary to win the 2023 presidential election.

“Thanks to Mr President, National Chairman, Presidential candidate and all those who worked tirelessly to put up the well structured campaign. The PCC has increased our confidence and readiness for February 25th 2023.”

Recall that the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC appeared to have made decisive inroads into the party’s Presidential Campaign Council PCC as it Wednesday night released a fresh list, naming Adamu as second in command of the council.

In the list which was signed by the National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore as opposed to the initial 422-member list signed by the presidential candidate of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president, Muhammadu Buhari was still named as Chairman of the Council.

Unlike in the earlier list, Adamu has now swapped positions with Tinubu as the former was named the Deputy Chairman of the council, while Tinubu becomes the Deputy Chairman II. His running mate, Kashim Shettima remains the vice chairman of the council.

Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong retains his position as Director General; Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as Deputy Director General, Operations and James Faleke as Secretary.

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Nigeria Startup Bill into law.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, disclosed this in a document made available to Newsmen.

He disclosed that the startup bill passed on was initiated by both office of the chief of staff, and the office of the minister of communication and digital economy to create an enabling environment for tech-based startups in Nigeria.

The two offices coordinated and established the foundation for the Nigeria Start-up Act 2022.

He said “On behalf of my principal, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, I am here to brief you about his assent to the Nigeria Start-Up bill today, Oct. 19, 2022.

“The President has assented to the bill and also conveyed it to the relevant institutions of government for gazetting.

“We are all excited knowing the benefits that our economy is going to generate from the Act.”

Pantami explained that the bill, which emanated from the executive arm of government, was passed by the Senate on July 27 and the House of Representatives on July 28, 2022.

He said the bill was the outcome of engagements with young innovators and start-ups across the country.

“And the approach we adopted was to allow our young start-ups, our young innovators, all over the country to identify the challenges they were confronted with in regards to intellectual property, financing, regulation, and incentives, among others.

“So, young innovators were engaged across the country, through their geo-political zones, where we encouraged them to voice out their challenges with regards to the ease of doing business.

“From their inputs, we discovered there was the need to have Nigeria start-up Act in place so that it will provide the enabling environment for them to continue to thrive and be successful.”

The minister noted that the digital economy sector had contributed a lot to the economy of Nigeria, adding that in the first quarter of 2020, the ICT sector contributed 14.72 percent to the nation’s GDP.

“In 2021, this administration set up a new record by contributing 17.92 per cent to our GDP.

“This year, in the second quarter of 2022, another record was set with the ICT sector contributing 18.44 percent to our GDP; these are all new records.”

According to the minister, the new law now provides the legal and strategic framework for the growth of the sector.

It also provides for the establishment of a Presidential Council to be called the National Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council, to be chaired by the President, with the Vice-President of the country as Vice Chairman.

He said that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy would preside over the Council in the absence of the President and Vice-President.

He also said that the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning; Industry, Trade and Investment, and Science and Technology, among others, are members of the Council.

“There are provisions for a minimum investment fund of N10billion and other incentives that will be disbursed to start-ups to encourage them,” Pantami said

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, received a Special Envoy from President Julius Mada Bio of Sierra Leone, wishing the West African country best of luck in its general elections, billed for June 2023.

The president said: “I am pleased that you are pursuing your political programmes effectively, just like us. We wish each other the best of luck.”

The Special Envoy, Andre Thomas Hope, said that his country was bidding for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, and solicited for Nigeria’s support.

He also said that his country, which saw the interventionist ECOWAS military force, ECOMOG, restoring normalcy in the past, was no longer defined by its inglorious history, “but is now a beacon of hope.”

He, therefore, thanked Nigeria for the role she played.

According to Hope, Sierra Leone has made progress in laying a foundation for free and fair polls in June 2023, with the citizenry having unhindered access to registration. (NAN)

To mark the second anniversary of the #EndSARS memorial of October 20, 2020, a memorial procession was announced by Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana, also known as Falz.

According to the flier shared, the procession cars will pass through the toll gate, waving the Nigerian flags and chanting #EndSARS.

A police officer who wouldn’t like his name on print said, “As long as they do not stop, we shouldn’t have a problem, because the agreement is that they don’t stop.

“But the moment anybody stops that person will be picked up and locked up in the van.”

Heavy police presence, with about 25 police cars and one black maria, can be seen at both sides of the toll gate.

As of the time of filing this report, the procession was yet to start.

U-23 AFCON Qualifier: Salisu Unveils 18-Man Squad For Tanzania Clash

Olympic Eagles head coach Salisu Yusuf has unveiled an 18-man squad for the team’s U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania.

Yusuf named a number of unknown foreign-based players in the squad.

Former Flying Eagles striker, Success Makanjuola, Promise David, who plays for Sirens FC of Malta, and FC Vizela of Portugal’s Adeyemo Emmanuel are some of the foreign-based stars, who make the cut.

The players and their officials will travel to Dar es Salaam for the first leg today.

The first leg will take place on Saturday, while the reverse fixture is billed for the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan a week later.
