The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has made mockery of the health condition of his counterpart, Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with TheCable through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Monday, Atiku said that Nigerians should take any presidential candidate whose health is “shrouded in secrecy” seriously

“The process of selecting a president is not a jamboree so the earlier the APC puts its house together and starts by having a council in place. They shouldn’t be taken seriously because of their inability to organise.

“Nobody should take the candidate of that party (APC) seriously. No one should take a candidate and a party whose health situation, early school, and early years are all shrouded in secrecy. No one should take such a candidate seriously.”

Recall that Tinubu’s state of health has raised serious concerns and questions amongst Nigerians and many have argued that he might have been afflicted with Parkinson’s disease — a disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement, often including tremors.

This is most especially as it has been observed on several occasions that he (Tinubu) finds it difficult to hold things firmly.

IPOB: Ngozi Umeadi Freed From Prison After Two Years

One Mrs. Ngozi Umeadi, from Anambra State, has been released from custody of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Suleja, Niger State.

Ngozi was, among others, accused of belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB founded by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Prior to her release, brother to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu and his wife, Favour Chioma Kanu stood as her guarantors.

Our correspondent gathered that Ngozi had been in detention for over two years. She was granted bail since December last year, and her release was stalled by some strident processes.

Her counsel, Barr Prince Mandela Umez, told our correspondent, Saturday, that, “We have finalised everything, but her formal release will be next Monday. When we finished the processes yesterday, it was already late. I went into the matter about three months ago in line with the appeal of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to his legal team to get IPOB members being incarcerated in various detention camps out through legal means.

“She was granted bail with two sureties, who must have N5m each in their bank accounts, and have companies registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They must also produce their statements of accounts. They must also produce their tax clearances of three years.

“The conditions were strident indeed. We put on effort. I briefed Nnamdi Kanu, and he encouraged us to do our best. Aloy Ejimakor, the rendition lawyer, tried a lot, as well as Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, among others.

“What she told me is appalling. It was terrible. But it motivated me a lot to get her out of custody. She is a free woman now. All arrangements have been concluded, just her formal release on Monday. It is victory to Kanu and IPOB. It is a commendation to the judiciary for granting her bail.”

Kanu has been in detention at the headquarters of the Department of State Services, Abuja, since last year after he was renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria. The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on October 13, 2022 discharged Kanu, though the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, said his discharge does not mean acquittal.

His charges are hinged on running a proscribed organisation, jumping bail, and treason. A High Court of Umuahi however ruled that Kanu did not jump bail in a suit instituted by his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

We Cannot Release Nnamdi Kanu Now, FG Gives Reason

The Federal Government, on Monday, gave reasons why it has not complied with the Court of Appeal judgement that ordered it to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

FG, in an affidavit it filed in support of its application to stay the execution of the judgement, described Kanu as “a flight risk person”, insisting that the case against him borders on national security.

Relying on the decided case law in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Vs Asari Dokubo, FG, argued that once a case touched on national security, the right of the individual affected takes secondary place.

“The Respondent is a flight risk person. It is important to appreciate the gamut of depositions in our application.

“One of the grounds of our application is that this matter touches on the national security of the state.

“We rely on the case of FRN Vs Dokubo, where the Supreme Court held that where national security is threatened or the likelihood of it being threatened, human rights take a secondary place.

“Once there is a threat to national security, the human rights of any individual can be suspended until such threat is taken care of.

“Once the security of the nation is in jeopardy, the individual right may not even exist”, FG argued through its lawyer, Mr. David Kaswe, an Assistant State Counsel in the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

It further told the court that there is an intelligence report that releasing Kanu from detention would worsen the security situation in the South East region.

However, Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, urged the appellate court to dismiss FG’s application, insisting that it was tantamount to seeking the stay of the liberty of a citizen.

“In fact, my lords, on the contrary, the release of Kanu will actually bring peace and tranquillity to the South East in particular and the nation in general

“This was demonstrated after the judgement of this court that ordered the release of the Respondent. Immediately after the judgement was delivered, there was so much joy and happiness in the entire South East. There was so much jubilation and merriment”, Ozekhome added.

He argued that Dokubo’s case was different from that of Kanu.

According to him, while Dokubo applied to be granted bail, pending the determination of the charge against him, in Kanu’s case, the appellate court has already terminated his trial and ordered his release.

After it had listened to both sides, a three-man panel of Justices of the appellate court led by Justice Haruna Tsanami, reserved ruling till a date to be communicated to the parties.

Court Shifts Date For Continuation Of Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has upheld the judgment setting the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, free.

According to the lawyer to Kanu, Chief Mike Ozekhome, (SAN), the court on Monday upheld the freedom of Kanu.

He maintained that the further detention of Kanu beyond October 13, 2022, was illegal.

Atiku Doesn’t Want Me To Campaign For Him, Wike Claimed — Nyesom Wike and Atiku Abubakar

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has alleged that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, does not want him to campaign for his election.

The governor made the assertion during the commissioning of the PDP governorship campaign office and the inauguration of the PDP campaign council in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Gov. Wike accused Atiku of appointing some members of the PDP in Rivers State into his campaign council without the “governor’s contribution”.

He said it means Atiku doesn’t want him and Rivers people to campaign for him.

He said “the presidential candidate entered Rivers State and picked those he wants to pick without the contribution of the governor.

“So they said they don’t need me to campaign for them, that they don’t want Rivers people to campaign for them, will you force yourself?

“I have never seen how people will disrespect a state like Rivers State and go and choose those who are enemies of the state.

“So they don’t want us to campaign, let’s campaign for those who want us to campaign for them.”

Court Declares Prince Otu APC Guber Candidate In Cross River — Sen Prince Bassey Otu

A Federal High Court in Calabar on Monday declared Bassey Otu as the authentic governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Cross River State for the forthcoming 2023 election.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, who made the declaration while delivering judgment in a suit in Calabar, held that it remains the right of political parties to determine their governorship candidate.

It can be recalled that Otu’s challenger, who was an APC governorship aspirant in the state, Owan Enoh, had after the primary earlier in the year, approached the court to seek the disqualification of Otu as the APC’s governorship candidate.

But the judge in her ruling said, “That a candidate contesting for the position of governor must be a Nigerian, meet the stipulated age requirement and have basic qualification according to the constitution.”

According to her, the matter of determination of a governorship candidate of a political party is, and still remains the right of a political party.

The development has finally put to rest months of speculations and division in the Cross River APC as the party prepares for the 2023 campaigns.

Court Adjourns Till 12noon To Allow FG File Charges On Why Nnamdi Kanu Should Be Detained Further

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Monday refused to grant the request of the Federal Government for adjournment in an application seeking to stay the execution of the judgment that set free the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The court, which has resumed its noon session on the matter, asked the FG to move its application or forget it.

The FG’s lawyer, Mr. David Kaswe, complained that he was served with a counter affidavit by Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN, Friday.

ABN TV reports that at the appellate court today, the FG is asking the court to stay the execution of the judgment of October 13 which voided the rendition of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria on account of a breach of local and international laws.

A three-panel of court would determine the FG’s motion on notice, according to a notice of appeal marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2025, sighted by newsmen.

Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, (SAN), leading the legal team, is in the court, alongside a senior lawyer, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor.

Atiku’s Campaign Chieftain Backs Wike Over Support For Sanwo-Olu And Sandy Onor — Governor Nyesom Wike

A key member of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign council, John Gaul Lebo, has said that Gov Nyesome Wike of Rivers State is backing the governorship candidacy of Prof Sandy Onor in Cross River State and that of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for two major reasons.

He argued that Wike is not performing anti-PDP activities by publicly donating to Sanwo-Olu’s campaign fund.

Lebo was a guest on Let’s Talk Nigeria, a flagship discussion programme on Sparkling FM radio Calabar on Monday morning.

He said Sanwo-Olu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos, has been Wike’s longtime friend beyond politics, arguing that Wike likes to sustain friendships.

“This is also the reason he is hellbent on bankrolling Sandy Onor who is of his own PDP. Sandy Onor was chairman of Etung LGA at the same time when Wike was chairman of a LGA in Rivers State. Both have been friends for a long time.

“Wike is also supporting PDP in Cross River State because he is duty bound to ensure that PDP regains the state next.”

He debunked the notion spread by APC stakeholders in the state that Wike wants to take over the state by his support.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, Wike again extended hefty financial support to leaders of the party when they called on him at his private residence. He also sent 25 buses for their political campaigns.

According to Lebo, who is a former Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly, the ongoing crisis bedeviling the party as a result of Wike’s call for resignation of national chairman of the PDP for a southerner was a normal and expected political brickbat which is necessary at these times.

He disagreed that the lingering bitter issues which tend to polarise the party and which have forced Wike to stay away from Atiku’s campaign activities, could affect its political fortunes or force out some governors who are sympathetic to Wike.

The former speaker further disagreed that the PDP Presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku was playing tribal card when he spoke last week in Kano, urging electorate not to vote for southern candidates.

“He was speaking to his kinsmen even though he did not speak in his native language in order to arrest their interest in him which is natural and which any other candidate would do in order not to lose votes from his ‘home’..

“Atiku was merely marketing himself within his brother ecosystem. We all know that political victory is necessarily determined on regional power system.”
