President Buhari Vows To Deliver Nigeria Air As ”Parting Gift”

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, has said that the Federal Government is set to generate 21 million full time jobs and lift 35 million people out of poverty by 2025.

Sambo, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Dr Sam Idiagbonya, disclosed this on Friday at the ongoing 2022 Ministerial Retreat at Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

According to him, the transportation sector is setting the stage for achieving the government’s commitment of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

Sambo said infrastructural gaps that existed in the sector necessitated the development of the National Development Plans; Medium-Term Development Plans 2021-2025 and a Long-Term Plan called the Nigeria Agenda 2050.

“This is to invest massively in infrastructure, ensure macroeconomic stability, enhance the investment environment, improve living conditions and implement climate change mitigation.

“This will generate 21 million full time jobs and lift 35 million people out of poverty by 2025, thus setting the stage for achieving the government’s commitment of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

“The plans are aimed at accelerating the growth of the transportation sector in the country with a strategic Medium-Term Vision Statement.

“I am well aware that you are all conversant with these high level goals, as they have become a blueprint for tracking performance towards the delivery of our mandates.

“They have also helped in addressing the bottlenecks militating against the growth of the transportation sector and stimulating domestic growth ” Sambo said.

In an apparent response to claims by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmad, that her ministry was not carried along by the Central Bank of Nigeria, in the ongoing process of redesigning three series of the naira, the bank insists it followed the law and due process to carry out the exercise, which is 12 years due.

According to a statement from the CBN, the spokesman of the bank, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, expressed surprise at the minister’s claim, stressing that the CBN remains a very thorough institution that follows due process in its policy actions.

 According to Nwanisobi, the management of the CBN, in line with provisions of section 2(b), section 18(a), and section 19(a)(b) of the CBN Act 2007, had duly sought and obtained the approval of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in writing to redesign, produce, release and circulate new series of N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes.

However, urging Nigerians to support the currency redesign project, he said it was in the overall interest of Nigerians, and that some persons were hoarding significant sums of banknotes outside the vaults of commercial banks. This trend, he said, should not be encouraged by anyone who means well for the country.

He noted that currency management in the country had faced several escalating challenges which threatened the integrity of the currency, the CBN, and the country, adding that every top-rate Central Bank was committed to safeguarding the integrity of the local legal tender, the efficiency of its supply, as well as its efficacy in the conduct of monetary policy.

On the timing of the redesign project, Nwanisobi explained that the CBN had even tarried for too long, considering that it had to wait 20 years to carry out a redesign, whereas the standard practice globally was for central banks to redesign, produce and circulate new local legal tender every five to eight years.

While assuring Nigerians that the currency redesign exercise was purely a central banking exercise and not targeted at any group, the CBN spokesman expressed optimism that the effort would, among other goals, deepen Nigeria’s push to entrench a cashless economy in the face of increased minting of the eNaira.

This, he said, was in addition to helping to curb the incidents of terrorism and kidnapping due to access of persons to the large volume of money outside the banking system used as a source of funds for ransom payments.

Nwanisobi, therefore, urged Nigerians, irrespective of their status, to support the Naira redesign project, as it is for the greater good of the economy.

NUJ Mourns, Condemns Death Of VON Reporter In Zamfara

The Correspondents’ Chapel, (NUJ) Yobe State has resolved to boycott all state government activities in the state alleging intimidation and harassment of its members by security operatives attached to the government house.

The Chapel also alleged that there is a lack of formal invitations to government activities by handlers of information in the state.

A statement from the Chapel also reads: “As members of the Fourth Estate of the realm, part of our responsibilities is to inform the public on happenings in the state including the government house.

“Regrettably, however, for over a year of the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni, the chapel has never received any formal invitation for coverage by the Governor’s spokesman, Mamman Muhammed, as it was the practice in the past.

“This has negatively affected the operations of representatives of national media dailies operating in the state.

“Lack of accessibility to Governor Mai Mala Buni by working journalists in the state.

“The chapel finds it disturbing, that despite the governor’s historic reign as APC Extraordinary Caretaker National Chairman and being a Governor for over 3 years where he has been addressing the Press at Abuja and other parts of the country but never addressed National Dailies in his own state to speak on his administration’s policies and programmes which demonstrates his inaccessibility to resident journalists.

“The chapel also resolves that its members are to desist from using press releases issued from the Yobe State government without prior contact with our members.

“The chapel calls on heads of security agencies in the state to sensitise their personnel on media security relations.

“The chapel finds it necessary to take this critical decision, in other to alert relevant stakeholders and appropriate authorities to take decisive action towards addressing the above issues amicably.

“Finally, the working journalists in Yobe State wish to inform the public and the government of Yobe State that our action should not be judged by sentiment but on the basis of our position as one of the major stakeholders of our democracy.

“It is also important to note that the coming election is very critical in our Nation’s democracy and therefore a fatal mistake in an attempting to circumvent the media.”

The Director, Media, and Publicity, Bola Tinubu-Kashim Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Bayo Onanuga, has faulted Nigerian separatist leader, Professor Banji Akintoye’s argument that his principal, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election, is pursuing his personal interest.

In a statement issued on Thursday, sent to ABN TV, Onanuga said Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, is aspiring to become Nigeria’s next president because he believes in a united country, and also because he is ready to serve.

“We find it quite preposterous the Professor’s sweeping outlandish accusation that Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu is only pursuing his personal interest in running for the presidency of Nigeria. Such a statement is malicious and unwarranted.

Atiku Won’t Win, Wike Controls 14 States – Galadima Opens Up

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has predicted that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will not win the 2023 election.

Galadima made the prediction on Thursday night in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by ABN TV.

According to the former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, whom Atiku is looking to reconcile with, controls 14 states in Nigeria.

“PDP is not even on the ballot because its strength is in the south-east, which has been eroded by Peter Obi (Labour Party presidential candidate). The next strength of PDP is in the south-south. With Wike never supporting Atiku, the south-south is gone,” Galadima said.

“And Wike is not only strong in the southeast, Wike commands 14 states of Nigeria for PDP. All of them follow him: five serving governors, and nine gubernatorial candidates outside the PDP-controlled states, all belong to Wike.

“It is what Wike decides that will happen in the PDP.

“The north-east is completely Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP presidential candidate) because he will win Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, and Bauchi, including the governorship.

“He will win the north-east, north-central, and will win the north-west. All combined, they have over 50-something million voters.

“Kwankwaso will poach the south-south, south-east, and part of the south-west.”

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has received the report of the Task Force On The Restoration Of Accreditation Of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba.

The governor while receiving the report at governor’s lodge in Aba congratulated the task force for a job well done, stressing that the management of the tertiary institution has failed to exercise prudence in matching their expenses with their income which be said is the major challenge of the institution. He further highlighted the need to consistently increase the student population.

The governor in a release signed by his chief press secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka assured that he will study the recommendations contained in the report with a view to implementing same.

Governor Ikpeazu said that the issue of staff rationalization must continue unabated and urged students of the polytechnic to always hold the management accountable.

The statement read further, “He challenged Management and Council of Abia State Polytechnic to sit up and reaffirmed that his government will continue to pay subventions of the polytechnic which is the statutory obligation the government owes all tertiary institutions. The Governor made it clear that his administration does not owe the institution any subventions.

“Presenting the report to the Governor earlier, the Chairman of the Task Force, Professor Ikechi Mgbeoji said that the deacreditation of Abia State Polytechnic few months ago came as a rude shock and expressed gratitude to the Governor for providing the sum of Four Hundred and Fifty Million Naira with which the Polytechnic was bailed out.

“He disclosed that the Task Force verified staff of the polytechnic as well as paid their salaries in addition to identifying the challenges confronting the Polytechnic and profering solutions to them.

“The Commissioner for Basic Education Chief Ukwu Rocks Emma, Commissioner for Post Basic Education, Sir Isreal Mark, Commissioner for Information & Strategy counterpart, Dr Eze Chikamnayo, Commissioner for Homeland Security, Hon Sopuruchi Bekee, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Okey Ahiwe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr Eze Ajuzie and members of the Task Force were present during the presentation of the report.”

The trial of the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode and three others continued on Friday with the testimony of an Investigating Officer, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Mr. Shehu Shuaibu.

He told a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos that the sum of N4.6 billion allegedly used to finance the Presidential Campaign of former President, Goodluck Jonathan is still under investigation.

Shuaibu in continuation of his testimony before Justice Daniel Osiagor said the Permanent Secretary, Sate House, Engineer Nebolisa Emodi and one Engineer Dandisu Abubakar conspired together and fraudulently transferred funds belonging to the Federal government for the use of the presidential campaign of former President, Goodluck Jonathan.

“The issue of fraudulent transactions of N4.6 billion is still under investigation. I am not a lawyer but, an investigator”, he stated

Asked if the result of his investigation formed part of what was submitted to the legal department of the EFCC, the witness stated that he was not the head of the investigation team, and would not know what was submitted to the Legal department of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Asked whether during Interrogation, the first defendant, Mrs. Nenadi Usman informed him that as Director, President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organisation, she was told to expect funds from various individuals and private organisations, the witness answered in affirmative.

The witness also confirmed that from exhibit 8, (Statement of Account), it was obvious that different individuals and private organisations fransfered money into the campaign organisation.

While being cross-examined by Mr. Norrison Quakers, SAN, counsel to the second Defendant ( Fani-kayode) the witness disclosed that, a Nigerian oil magnate, Emeka Offor transferred the sum of N500 million into the campaign organisation.

He also confirmed that on the 11th of January 2015, the sums of N500 million, N250 million, N100 million, N180 million, and N30 million were transferred by various individuals and organisations into the Joint Trust Account used for the campaign.

The witness also confirmed that on the 19th of February 2015 the sums of N500 million, N205 million, N21 million, N9.7million were also paid into the account.

He said between 7th of January the 20th March 2015 N300 million and N400 million were deposited into the account.

Justice Osiagor has adjourned further hearing till January 25th and 26th, 2023.

Fani-Kayode who was the Director, Media and Publicity of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organisation, is standing trial alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, a former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Yusuf Danjuma, and a company, Jointrust Dimensions Nigeria Ltd.

The defendants had each pleaded not guilty to the counts and were granted bail.

Four Hawkers Crushed In Anambra Accident

No fewer than four persons said to be hawkers around the Onitsha axis of the Niger bridge were on Friday, killed in an accident.

A source said the accident occurred when a truck moving from Onitsha to Asaba suddenly developed brake failure, causing it to run into the traffic, smashing vehicles.

Though a number of vehicles were involved in the accident, a source said hawkers in the area were the worst hit as they lost four persons.

The source said: “The truck lost its break and ran into the traffic, smashing several vehicles.

“It smashed an Asaba-Onitsha bound Mitsubishi L.300 at Onitsha, Niger Bridge. The truck failed brake, and at least four persons, all hawkers were killed.”

$1 Now ₦788, We Are Not Aware Of Naira Redesigning - Finance

Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmad, has disassociated her ministry from the planned move by the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) to redesign the naira.

The minister, who commented on the policy in response to a question raised by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central) during the 2023 budget defense session with the Senate Committee on Finance, warned CBN of consequences that may arise from the new policy.

Senator Bamidele had told the minister that barely two days after the announcement of the plan, the effect on the value of the naira to the US dollar was being felt.

“Just two days after the announcement of the policy, the value of naira to a US dollar has risen from N740 to N788 due to a rush in exchange of naira notes for foreign currencies, particularly dollars.

In her quick response, the minister said she and her ministry are not aware of the policy but only heard of it from the media.

“Distinguished senators, we were not consulted at the Ministry of Finance by CBN on the planned naira redesigning and cannot comment on it as regards merits or otherwise.

Tinubu Most Successful Governor In 99 Set — Nnamani

Former Governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani, says Asiwaju Bola Tinubu remains the most successful Governor amongst the class of 1999–2007 set.

Answering questions from journalists in Abuja, Nnamani said Tinubu, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, has what it takes to turn around the fortunes of the country.

Nnamani, now the Senator representing Enugu East, also narrated how bad the situation in the country was before 1999, saying “most of us inherited a state that had all of its sectors in poor conditions as a result of several years of military rule. All we had was pure joy in our electorate’s hearts because they had a democratically elected governor.

“From health to education to the economy and security, Lagos state and many other states were in turmoil as a results of years of military rule but Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the most progress out of all of us in reforms of various sectors, with Enugu State coming in second.”

He said in the Education sector under Tinubu, “they discovered that out of the 7,877 classrooms that were available, 5,908 needed renovation,” adding that “With 682,000 students, the 7,877 classrooms were insufficient due to the UNESCO standard of 1:25 students per classroom.

Nnamani also disclosed how many principals were sponsored to travel to Cape Town, Nairobi, and Auckland between 1999 and 2007, adding, “in total, more than 100 instructors received training in Nigeria and other French-speaking African nations .

“In order to keep up with the most recent global educational trends, Lagos State under Tinubu funded the training of 1,400 teachers to teach the recently introduced Family Life Health Education by the national council on education, stressing that in doing so, Lagos State became the first to adopt and execute the program.”

He maintained that Tinubu will replicate the Lagos successes across the country and has the capacity to revamp the economy and make Nigeria to work for the benefit of all.
