Atiku: Rivers Yet To Decide On Presidential Candidate To Support — Wike

PDP Crisis: Atiku, Tambuwal, Lamido Should Be Suspended – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, said the state was yet to decide on next year’s presidential election.

He declared that the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, all the House of Representatives, Senate and State House of Assembly will win in the 2023 general elections, saying the state was yet to determine what to do concerning the presidential election.

Wike spoke during the inauguration 319 Ward and 32 Constituency Liaison Officers in Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday.

This was contained in a statement issued by Kelvin Ebiri, Special Assistant on Media to Governor Wike and made available to newsmen.

“PDP will win our state. I am not hiding it as far as the governorship, House of Reps, Senate and State Assembly are concerned. The other one (presidency), we have not decided until the right thing is done,” the Rivers governor said.

This is as Wike also took a swipe at the former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, saying he does not fill such a leadership position to speak on behalf of the state.

Dr. Sekibo is the Director General of the Peoples’ Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State.

Sekibo, former governor of the state (now derecognized), Sir Celestine Omehia, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara and the former senator who represented the Rivers South-East district, Senator Lee Maeba, had fallen out of favour after they pitched their tent with the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2023 poll.

Wike said Sekibo was a self-seeking politician who has been unable to attract democratic dividend, of whatever kind, to the State while he served as minister and also to his hometown, Okrika local government area of the state.

“I watched a video when one Dr. Abiye Sekibo, while he was addressing people in his house yesterday (Sunday), said he is the director of Atiku’s Supporters in Rivers.

“I have no problem about that. But he does not have the capacity to speak on behalf of Rivers State.

“In that video, he said that Rivers State has been having a close relationship with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that Rivers State has always benefitted from Atiku Abubakar.

“I want to correct one impression, Dr. Abiye Sekibo has a personal relationship with Alhaji Atiku, not Rivers State.

“Dr. Abiye Sekibo was Minister of Transport when Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was the Vice president of Nigeria. Can you people mention one project in Okrika, I don’t even want to talk about Rivers State, in Ogu/Bolo, one project that he brought down to Rivers State. Is there anyone?”

Wike said leadership was not about personal aggrandizement, but serving the people, protecting their interests while building up others as competent successors.

He stated that people like Dr. Sekibo number among those who are never satisfied with the fortunes they have enjoyed in life, otherwise, he should have been silent in the public sphere for his failure in leadership.

“I was a minister, junior minister in that matter. But I am proud to say anywhere I go in this state (Rivers), I brought a dividend of democracy to Rivers.

“As a junior minister, I brought the Oil and Gas Polytechnic to Rivers State that is sited in Bonny. There was no Faculty of Law at the University of Port Harcourt since the creation of that institution, but I brought it.

“As a minister, I made sure Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic and the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, even if they are state institutions, I made sure they got a grant of N500M each,” Wike stated.

Wike also listed his several educational interventions at the primary-secondary school levels, which depict what true leadership should be.

He stressed that Dr. Sekibo as Secretary to the Rivers State government did not also execute any project of note in Okrika, saying while he, as Chief of Staff, delivered several road projects in Rumuepirikom.

The Federal Government has said the plethora of economic challenges has not deterred President Muhammadu Buhari from putting smiles on the faces of the poor and vulnerable Nigerians, saying the Buhari administration has liberated more Nigerians from poverty and it’s still on track to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by the end of his administration in 2023.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, spoke yesterday in Jalingo, Taraba State, while launching the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, GEEP 2.0.

According to him, “Since the inception of President Muhammadu Buhari’s led Administration in 2015, when it inherited a National Poverty Incidence level averaging 70 percent going by National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, the Federal Government has paid more attention in generating solutions to address the plight of the poor and vulnerable in the country despite other economic challenges the Administration inherited at the time.

“This informed the decision to initiate the National Social Investment Programme, NSIP, in 2015 as a strategy for poverty reduction and enhancing social inclusion among our people especially the women and disabled in rural areas.

“This NSIP has been acclaimed by many to be the largest and most ambitious social protection programme in Africa, and it is currently attracting many partnerships including even from international development partners.”

Application To Stop Tinubu’s Certificate Forgery Suit Suffers Setback

Fix Nigeria When You Become President – Olu Falae Tells Tinubu
Bola Tinubu

An application by a factional group in the Action Alliance to stop the certificate forgery suit instituted against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was on Monday dismissed by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The bid by the group loyal to Tinubu and led by Adekunle Omo-Aje was rejected by the court from being joined as an interested party to defend Tinubu in the certificate forgery suit brought against him by the AA party.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in a ruling on the joinder application of Omo-Aje and his faction, threw out the request on the grounds that conditions precedent for such joinder to be granted were not placed before the court.

Amongst others, Justice Egwuatu held that Omo-Aje did not establish his claim as National Chairman of the AA and also did not disclose how his interest would be jeopardised if not joined as defendant in the suit.

Justice Egwuatu, while dismissing the joinder request, held that the group remains meddlesome interloper and busy body until their interests likely to be affected are clearly established.

In the ruling, Justice Egwuatu said that both Adekunle Omo-Aje and Ambassador Suleiman Abdumalik who filed the joinder application on behalf of their faction failed to satisfy the conditions on why they should be joined.

Besides, the Judge held that they also failed to make out a case in any form, to sway the court to join them.

The factional group had in the joinder application sought for dismissal of the suit against the APC and Tinubu on the ground that they (as officers of the party) did not authorise the suit to be filed in the name or on behalf of the party.

The Judge thereafter ordered the plaintiff (AA) to open its case of certificate forgery allegations against Tinubu on Friday November 4, 2022.

Justice Egwuatu specifically ordered that witnesses in the suit must be brought before the court to enable it determine the suit within time stipulated by law.

The Action Alliance Party in the suit is seeking disqualification of Tinubu from the 2023 election on alleged certificate forgery.

The party had, on June 21, asked the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission from including the name of the All Progressives Congress in the ballot of the 2023 presidential election.

The party in the Writ of Summon marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/954/2022, predicated its request on the claim that both the APC and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, are not qualified to participate in the 2023 presidential election on alleged forgery committed by Tinubu in 1999.

The suit filed on behalf of the plaintiff by its lawyer, Mr Upkai Ukairo, claimed that Tinubu forged his University of Chicago certificate he submitted in 1999 in aid of his qualification for the 1999 governorship election in Lagos State, which was won by Tinubu.

The suit, dated and filed on June 21, had the Independent National Electoral Commission, the APC and Senator Bola Tinubu as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively.

Pope Prays For Nigeria As He Meets Nigerian Pilgrims In Vatican

0
Pope Francis’ Funeral Scheduled For Saturday, Vatican Confirms

Pope Francis has granted audience to 112 pilgrims from Nigeria currently in Rome for the 2022 special pilgrimage organised by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC).

The pilgrims were led to the papal audience at the Vatican City by His Grace, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, among other high profile personalities.

A statement issued on Monday in Abuja by Celestine Toruka, NCPC Head of Media and Public Relations, said that the Pontiff received the Nigerian flag from the pilgrims and prayed for peace and progress in Nigeria.

He also prayed for those who lost their lives in the recent flood incidents in Nigeria.

Toruka said that Rev. Yakuba Pam, the Executive Secretary of the commission, described the audience with the Pope as spiritually fulfilling.

He quoted Pam to have commended the good conduct of the pilgrims during the special pilgrimage to Rome in spite of what he described as some “inadequacies”, and the inability of the pilgrims to visit Israel due to operational reasons.

The NCPC boss assured the pilgrims especially the self-sponsored ones that the commission would come up with a mechanism to accommodate them in the next pilgrimage, the spokesman said.

The PRO added that one of the pilgrims and the President of Baptist Convention, Rev. Israel Akanji, also described the the visit to the Pope as awesome, adding that it would have a special effect on Nigeria and her people.

“The fact that the Pope prayed for Nigeria and her people signifies a new beginning for the country,” he added in the statement.

The spokesman also said that Daramola Bade, the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), who handed the Nigerian flag to the Pope, said it was an unforgettable experience.

“I will never forget this experience in my life, I thank the NCPC for providing this veritable platform to be in the presence of his Holiness,” Bade was quoted as saying in the statement.

Very Rev. Bukola Adeleke, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Christian matters, said that the pilgrimage to Rome was fulfilling in view of many Holy sites visited by the pilgrims in the statement.

Toruka stated that Adekeke said that the pilgrims visited the St. John Basilica, the Basilica of Mary as well as St. Peters Basilica all in Vatican among other important Holy sites.

Adeleke commended the NCPC for organising the special pilgrimage and suggested that more improvements be made to make the exercise seamless in the future, the spokesman added.

In his comment, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Nestor Ezeme, said that he could not contain his joy when he met with the Pope for the first time the spokesman said.

“It is a privilege of a life time,” Ezeme said and urged the NCPC to organise more of such pilgrimages and interaction with the Pope in the future.

He lauded the NCPC for providing decent accommodations for the pilgrims despite all odds.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that pilgrims from Lagos and Enugu states, as well as some high profile personalities including the Deputy Governors of Enugu and Nasarawa States and traditional rulers were in Rome for the pilgrimage.

Gun-wielding men, suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted four commuters in Irele-Ekiti, Ajoni Local Council Development Area(LCDA) of Ekiti state.

According to sources in the community, the victims, said to be heading to Ibadan, Oyo state capital after attending an event in Kogi state last weekend, were kidnapped around 11a.m. on Sunday.

It was gathered that the four travellers were waylaid by seven gun-wielding men on the road between Irele-Ekiti and Oke-Ako and whisked them to the forest.

A source said: “The four victims were coming from an event in Kogi and returning to Ibadan when they were attacked along the Irele-Ekiti and Oke-Ako road.

“We have not heard anything from the gunmen since yesterday (Sunday) and we are hoping they will get in touch with their families possibly for ransom.”

Abejide, who is the Akogun of Irele -Ekiti, urged the new governor of the state, Biodun Oyebanji, to impress it on the military authorities to provide Army outpost to safeguard the area against the rampaging gunmen.

“Even though we made local arrangements here relating to security, it can never be enough to confront these people.

“These four people were going to Ibadan and they were attacked and kidnapped on Sunday morning and we have not heard anything since they were taken into the forest.

“Let me call on the governor of Ekiti to do something urgently on the issue of security before our people will be wiped out in the entire communities in Ajoni LCDA.

“There is need for a military post between Irele and Oke-Ako, which will help to forestall any possible attack by these gunmen because it appears they are taking advantage of the poor security arrangements here.”

Contacted, the Amotekun Corps Commander, Brigadier General Joe Komolafe (retd) who confirmed the incident, said: “Operatives of the corps are combing the forest in the area towards rescuing the victims.”
