ABN TV reports Sir Udensi, a factional governorship candidate of APGA has weeks ago played host to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

He has been a die-hard critic of the PDP-led government in Abia, accusing the administration of poor leadership.

The move may not be unconnected with effort to align and re-align towards 2023.

A Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State, has sacked Senator Emmanuel Bwacha from his legislative seat, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bwacha is the Senator representing Taraba South at the National Assembly.

The Taraba State chapter of the PDP had since the defection of Bwacha from the party to APC, approached the court to declare the seat of the Senator vacant for dumping the party on which he was elected.

Justice Simon Amobeda in his ruling ordered Senator Bwacha to immediately vacate his seat in the Senate.

Lady Commits Suicide At Lagos Lagoon

Tragedy struck on Thursday, when a yet-to-be-identified middle-aged lady reportedly jumped into Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge, in an apparent case of suicide.

The incident occurred at about 10 am.

At the time of filing this report, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Agency, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said rescue teams were still searching for the body.

According to Oke-Osayintolu, “Upon arrival of the LRT at the scene, an investigation revealed that a lady in her late 30s plunged into the Lagos Lagoon.

“Further investigation revealed that the lady alighted from a commercial cab on the bridge and suddenly plunged into the lagoon.

“The driver of the taxi claimed that earlier she was having a heated conversation with her fiancé over her mobile phone before alighting and jumping into the lagoon.

“The LRT, men of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, and officials of the Department of State Service, DSS, are still searching for the victim.”

Oke-Osanyintolu, however, lamented the spate of suicide, particularly on the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said: “Every 40 second, someone thinks about committing suicide and eventually does.”

It is instructive that the 11.8 kilometres length, of the bridge over the lagoon had witnessed series of suicide cases in the last four months.

The bridge, since it was opened in 1990, has served as the major route from the Mainland to Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Epe, where thousands of residents commute daily.

Recall that sometime in October, a yet-to-be-identified man was captured in a viral video jumping into the Lagoon after he was reportedly accused of stealing.

A Facebook user, Ngozi Blessing, shared videos of when the man was addressing some onlookers and the moment he jumped into the Lagoon.

Blessing, in the post, alleged that the man took to suicide because he was framed for stealing a huge amount of money, which he denied knowledge of.

In a text accompanying the video, Blessing wrote: “He was saying that they framed him; that he stole a huge of money which he did not.

“And they said they give him 24 hours to refund the money but that he did not steal.

“For him to eat once in a day is a problem, so where will he get that kind of money from within 24 hours.

“So he is tired of life and so he jumped off the bridge.”

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as an “alliance of convenience” that will collapse after defeat in the coming presidential election in 2023.

The former Vice President stated this shortly after the inauguration of the youth wing of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Thursday.

The APC is a merger of three largest opposition parties: the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Lagos governor; the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) led by then General Muhammadu Buhari, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) along with a breakaway faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the new PDP.

Atiku said the PDP being the oldest political party in Nigeria has over the years gained enough experience and grounds to sustain Nigeria’s democracy.

“You see, to be honest, PDP is the only party in this country. The APC is an alliance between CPC and Tinubu’s party. We are going to defeat them at the polls and then they will be dead. I do not see them survive after,” he said.

Atiku, however, urged the newly inaugurated National Youth Campaign Council, drawn from the six geo-political zones to take his message of hope down to the nooks and crannies of their wards and inspire in them his agenda of resetting and rescuing Nigeria.

PDP’s vice-presidential candidate and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa said Nigeria is in distress in the hands of APC and in dire need of a “chief medical consultant” in the person of Atiku Abubakar to revive it from coma.

He, however, said the task of reclaiming Nigeria from years of misrule by APC rests squarely on the Nigerian youths to make the right choice by investing their future in the hands of Atiku who has always spoken truth to them and shun the pack of lies and deceit by the ruling party and its candidate.

The Deputy National Chairman (North), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum who represented the National Chairman, Iyochia Ayu also charged the youths to seize the opportunity offered by the PDP to create the kind of change they truly deserve even as he called on them to eschew violence.

Also present at the well attended event were the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization, Aminu Tambuwal, the Deputy Director General of Operations and former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Liyel Imoke and a member of PDP Board of Trustees, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Abia Guber Candidate Tussle: How APC National Chairman Lambasted Emenike During Abuja Visit — Group

A socio-political group, Abia Liberation Vanguard, ALV has said the recent visit of the factional governorship candidate of APC in Abia State, High Chief Ikechi Emenike did not go well as the national chairman of the party, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu allegedly berated Emenike.

According to ALV, Emenike had sought the intervention of the Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee of the party to appeal to a former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah to withdraw his case against Emenike and explore other avenues to assist him.

This according to ALV did not go down well with Adamu as he insists he will not interfere with a matter already in the court.

Uche Ogah is laying claim to the governorship ticket of the party, having emerged through a direct primary election while Emenike, believed to enjoy the backing of the party’s leadership also emerged candidate but through an indirect primary.

Ogah had claimed that the primary that produced him as a candidate was the only mode of election directed by the party leadership.

The National Coordinator of ALV, Engr. Samuel Anyaeze said the APC national leadership fingered Emenike for why there is a crisis in the Abia State chapter of the party.

He said in a statement on Thursday, “Details of a planned Protest by a factional governorship candidate of the APC in Abia state High Chief Ikechi Emenike has been exposed. In a last-minute attempt, Embattled Emenike had days ago taken the fight for the Abia Guber ticket of the party to the national chairman of the party alongside with some of his close friends to intervene and plead with Ogah a former Minister for mineral resources but was disappointed that the visibly angry National Chairman lambasted him and insist on not interfering or speaking over a matter pending in court.

“Adamu in his words thanked the visitors for making out time to visit him and his colleagues but warned that no one should bring matters concerning past events to the party’s secretariat. He blamed Emenike for his role in causing chaos in the state chapter of the party which made the party lose prominent party men and women who would have positively contributed to the fortune of the party in the 2023 elections. He further asked them to go and work for the success of the Apc in the coming elections.”

The group also accused Emenike of undermining the directive of the party by going ahead to conduct an indirect primary election.

Engr. Anyaeze said further, “It will be recalled that the National working committee of the party had directed through a letter that Abia state and two other states with factional state leadership should hold Direct Primaries in producing their candidates but Emenike had flaunted the party directives by holding a separate Indirect Primaries which produced him as the candidate while Chief Ogah emerged through a Direct Primaries monitored by INEC which all security agencies in the state has detailed report of his emergence.

“Emenike later approached a local court sitting in a remote setting in Abia where he obtained a frivolous plea ordering the Apc and INEC to publish his name as candidate of the party. Apc national appealed on the local judgement but a governor requested that the appeal be withdrawn and the lawyer changed. Not satisfied by the development, Mazi Ogah approached a federal high court seeking Justice for the unlawful removal of his name as the Party’s candidate haven emerged successfully in the primaries. Judgment has been slated for the 11th of November 2022. A recent outburst by Emenike and his group suggests that they have made attempts to overturn Justice but met resistance from the judge handling the matter as Emenike’s spokesperson had shown frustration through a publication.

“In another circular that emerged yesterday 9th of November 2022 Chief Emenike had summoned an emergency meeting of those loyal to him in a bid to cause chaos in Abia and Abuja on Friday where they plan to disrupt commercial activities. The Leadership of Abia Youth Vanguard Dr. Okechukwu Uwadi had raised alarm over the threat such protests posses to the state at this time and has called on Security agencies to be aware of Emenike’s desperate attempt to disrupt the peace in the state. Uwadi further warned that no such miscreant be allowed on Abia Street. Dr. Uwadi added that Chief Emenike is working for the PDP to cut short the chances of the APC in Abia state. He accused the PDP of sponsoring Emenike to ensure that APC do not succeed. He wondered why an Emenike with zero political value in the state would want to just answer a one-time governorship candidate when he knows it’s a wasted ticket. He noted that Uchechukwu Ogah is a peace-loving statesman with too much support base and capacity to overrun any nonsense by anybody. Dr. Uwadi said that Ogah is a very disciplined man who followed NWC directives and emerged through the direct primaries which INEC monitored and it is important to know that reports from all security agencies in state confirm the emergence of Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah as the authentic candidate of the APC in Abia. He called on well-meaning Abians to be steadfast in prayers, support Uche Ogah and be watchful of any desperate attempt by a drowning man.”

NCDC Records 1,601 Yellow Fever Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has reported a total of 1,601 suspected cases of yellow fever from 463 local government areas in 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

The cases were reported from January 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022.

According to the situation report obtained by our correspondent, on Wednesday, a total of 15 deaths were recorded from suspected cases in 10 of the states.

Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The ‘yellow’ in the name refers to jaundice that affects some patients.

Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. A small proportion of patients, who contract the virus, develop severe symptoms and approximately half of them die within seven and 10 days.

The report read in part, “Cumulatively from January 1, 2022 – September 30, 2022, a total of 1,601 suspected cases have been reported from 463 LGAs in 36 states including the FCT.

“The cases were reported from the following states: Abia (48), Adamawa (21), Akwa Ibom (9), Anambra (94), Bauchi (81), Bayelsa (25), Benue (28), Borno (139), Cross River (41), Delta (10), Ebonyi (31), Edo (22), Ekiti (44), Enugu (67), FCT (7), Gombe (16), Imo (77), Jigawa (103), Kaduna (14), Kano (15), Katsina (107), Kebbi (33), Kogi (20), Kwara (29), Lagos (6), Nasarawa (27), Niger (27), Ogun (41), Ondo (74), Osun (22), Oyo (94), Plateau (70), Rivers (28), Sokoto (22), Taraba (51), Yobe (41) and Zamfara (17).

“Total of 15 presumptive positives and eight inconclusive results were recorded from the Nigeria Laboratory network.

“These presumptive positives were from UBTH Benin (3), MDH Abuja (2), CPHL Lagos (6), YDMH (2) and NRL Abuja (2). These were reported from Edo -1 (Egor), Cross River -1 (Akabuyo). Niger -1 (Suleja). Rivers-1 (Port-Harcourt), Taraba -1(Karim Lamido), Anambra -1 (Ogabaru), Sokoto-2 (Dange-shuni, Tambuwal), Ogun-1 (Ijebu East) Osun-1 (Atakunmosa East), Ondo-3 (Akure South), Ekiti-1 (Irepodun/Ifelodun), Kwara-1 (Kaiama). The inconclusive cases were reported from Oyo -1 (Olorunsogo) and Anambra-2 (Idemili South (1), Ayamelum (1) and Imo -2 (Nwangele (1), Ahiazu Mbaise (1)), Enugu -1 (Agwu (1), Ogun-1 (Ijebu Ode) and Osun -3 (Irewole (1). These samples have been shipped to IP Dakar for confirmation.

“Seven confirmed cases have been reported from IP Dakar from Anambra-2 [Idemili South (1), Ogbaru (1)], Imo -1 [Nwangele (1)], Ondo-1 [Akure South (1), Osun-2 [Atakunmosa East (1), Irewole (1)], Sokoto-1 [Dange-shuni (1)].

“Fifteen deaths recorded from suspected cases in Abia (1), Bayelsa (1), Benue (1), Imo (1), Kaduna (2), Katsina (2), Kebbi (1), Taraba (2), Yobe (1) and Zamfara (3) States [CFR = 1.0 per cent].

“Male-to-female ratio for suspected cases was 1.2:1 with males 871(54.4 per cent) and females 730(45.6 per cent).

“74 per cent of cases were predominantly aged 30 years and below.

“One hundred and seventy-four (11 per cent) of 1,601 suspected cases received at least one dose of the yellow fever vaccine

“The NCDC is coordinating response activities through the National Multi-agency Yellow Fever Technical Working Group.”

Jos – Gunmen on Wednesday night abducted two clerics at the Mararaba Jema’a area of Jos South local government area of Plateau State.

The victims were travelling from Mangu Halle to Jos when they were ambushed and abducted at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Vanguard gathered that one of the victims identified as Pastor Nuhu Bakwa who resides in Abuja lost his aged father in their village, Farin Kasa, Mangu Halle in the Mangu local government area of the State and he travelled with his family and his friend who is also a cleric to the village to prepare for the burial.

The spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo was yet to react to the incident at the time of this report but a family member confirmed the abduction.

According to the person, “Pastor Nuhu Bakwa lost his father on Tuesday at Farin Kasa, Mangu Halle. He left Abuja where he stays in the village to start the preparation for the burial. Yesterday(Wednesday) he was on his way to Jos from Farin Kasa. When he got to Mararaba Jema’a with his wife, children and Pastor friend, his vehicle was stopped and the two Pastors were kidnapped while they left the wife and children.

“I learned that the kidnappers have made contact and are demanding N10m before their release. The incident happened between 8 p.m and 9 p.m. It is very sad, the father’s corpse is yet to be buried and he only came to make arrangements for the burial.”

The Father of the five children set ablaze by their stepfather, Liadi Akinfolarin, has lamented that they were roasted like bush meat.

Their stepfather, Ojo Joseph, who reportedly sprayed the room in which the children were sleeping with petrol, before setting it ablaze over alleged denial of sex by his wife, has been paraded by the state police command.

The suspect alleged that he set the children ablaze because they used to join their mother to beat him up.

Ojo said he had been married to four different women and had 10 children.
This is coming as reports had it that, aside from the child that was burnt to death in the inferno, two others reportedly died at the hospital, on Tuesday.

The twins that the wife had for the suspect, after his first failed marriage, were not affected in the inferno.

Narrating his ordeal, the father of the five children, Liadi Akinfolarin, said: “My wife packed out of our matrimonial home and left the children for me to cater for because of the man that now burnt my children

“I work on the farm as a tractor driver. The children used to stay with me whenever I did not go to the farm. At times, I would stay on the farm for three to four days before coming home. And during that period, the children stayed with their mother till I come back from work.

“Most times when I’m back from the farm on Fridays, I would call their mother to tell them I was back. And they would stay at my place till the Mondays when they would go to school.

“After closing, they would go to their mother till when I will be around again. That’s how we were been doing it on Fridays and Saturdays.

“On that fateful Friday, I returned home late from work. So, I couldn’t call them because I knew they would come to my place on Saturday.

“But around 4 pm, I received a call from an unknown person, who told me that the house of my former wife’s husband was on fire. But I did not answer the person because the woman is no longer my wife.

“My phone rang again around 6pm and the person said my children wanted to speak with me.

“Then I heard my first daughter’s voice saying that our stepfather set us ablaze with petrol and they have been taken to the general hospital in Ondo. “And I Immediately left for the hospital.

“On getting there, I saw my children writhing in pain. Some were burnt beyond recognition.

“One first died, while the second one died on our way to FMC Owo. “The one that died first is Tayo, a seven-year-old boy and the second one is Aanu, a nine-year-old girl. Their corpses have been deposited at the morgue.

“The man roasted my children like bush meat. Now, I’m left with three out of five children.

“The remaining three, Bisola, Tope and Tobi are at FMC Owo with the support of oxygen.

“I have promised them that after this trip to the farm, I will stop going and look for something else to do so that I can take care of them properly.

“They only stay with their mother in her husband’s house whenever I’m not at home.

“I have five children already; two boys and three girls. So, what am I looking for again? I don’t want my children to suffer.“

He noted that “That is why I did not remarry, to prevent another woman from maltreating them.”

During his parade by the police, the stepfather said that he acted because the children joined their mother to beat him up whenever they have a misunderstanding.

Ojo said: “I am 64 years old. I have married four wives. I did not strangulate my first wife. I have 10 children from different women.

“The one I married last, if I give her money and she buys food, she does not give me food. She does not wash my clothes. She always fights me.

“We have been together for two years. She and her children used to fight and beat me. They are always fighting. She does not fetch water for me. She fights the whole street. She always fights me alongside her children. They always beat me.

“We fought the day I set the children ablaze. We do not use to quarrel over sex. Everybody in the street knows the children used to beat me. We fought the night I set them ablaze.”

Addressing newsmen, the state police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, said Ojo told police interrogators that he gave his wife N600 but he was not given any food the night he carried out the heinous act.

Odunlami said three of the children have died, adding that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Police Rescue Man Locked Up For 20 years In Kaduna

The Police in Zamfara has restated commitment to provision of adequate security to ensure protection of tertiary institutions of learning in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Kolo Yusuf, stated this when visited Federal University Gusau, Federal College of Education (Technical) and Police Secondary School in Gusau, the state capital.

This was contained in a statement by the Spokesman of the Command, Muhammad Shehu, on Thursday in Gusau.

Kolo said the measure was in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, to provide adequate security to schools across the country.

“In compliance with the IGP’s directives, Mr Kolo Yusuf led Police Tactical Team to Federal University Gusau, Federal College of Education (Technical) and Police Secondary School Gusau for confidence building patrol.

“During the visit, the Police Commissioner met with the management of the schools, who took him round some of the strategic locations in their respective schools which were instantly assessed for security mapping, to safeguard lives and property.

“Kolo also made some paramount observations and advised the schools management appropriately,” the statement said.

The CP reiterated commitment of the Command to the security and safety of all the schools across the state.

He urged the staff and students to be security conscious, and report suspicious movements to the police and other security agencies.

The statement further quoted the management of the schools as commending IGP and the police for their concern to the security of the schools.

“They promised to give all necessary support to the police and other security agencies in ensuring the safety of their schools,” the statement disclosed.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has said that it does not use nor permit the use of Point of Sale machines nor receive payment for fines of traffic offences on patrol points.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available by the Corps Spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, on Thursday.

FRSC explained that rather, it made use of a digitalised E-ticketing device to enhance ease of doing business.

The statement read in part, “As an ISO certified organisation with global recognition for lead role in road safety administration and traffic management, the Corps has over the years developed transformational initiatives focused on People, Processes and Technology. This development is strategic to the introduction of technology into its operations to fade out the use of booking sheet which is a manual way of recording traffic offenders information and replace it with a digital booking device.

“In addition to the above and for better clarification on this technology, the Corps wishes to let the public know that the E-Tablet is a three in one android device that was brought into the operational front in compliance with global best practices on electronic ticketing.

“The introduction of the device targets at improving robust data collection and speeding up on-the-spot synchronisation of traffic offenders information into the national database. The device is a one stop shop for verification of the national driver’s license and the vehicle number plate as well as other FRSC products and services.

“The Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, is by this medium reiterating that the motoring public should note that the Corps does not use POS machines but a digitalised E-ticketing device which at the moment enhances ease of doing business.”
