Pereira Knocks Out Adesanya, Claims UFC Middleweight Champion

Alex Pereira pulled off an upset against Israel Adesanya with a knockout in the fifth round during the main event at the UFC 281 to become the new UFC middleweight champion ending Adesanya’s reign atop the division on Sunday morning,

Adesanya fought a near-perfect fight. He had Pereira out on his feet at the end of Round 1, but the Brazilian returned the favour in Round 5 to snatch it.

Adesanya was seeking revenge after losing two fights to Pereira in kickboxing back in 2016 and 2017.

The 33-year-old Adesanya started the fight with cautiousness as he does however towards the end of the first round was able to stun Pereira.

Just before the end of the first round, Adesanya landed a huge shot that sent Pereira to the ground.

In the second round, Pereira dominated ‘The Last Stylebender’ and landed the takedown to level the judges’ scorecard.

In the fifth round, Pereira knocked the Nigerian out. Adesanya was likely up on the scorecards, three rounds to one, when he slipped in the middle of the octagon. He tried to recover but it was the beginning of the end. As Adesanya retreated to the fence, Pereira followed and peppered him with punches to the face, stunning him and nearly knocking him unconscious. Referee Marc Goddard ended the fight as Adesanya’s body went limp, though Adesanya protested the stoppage as he attempted to regain his composure.

The result ends Adesanya’s title reign at six defenses and likely sets up a rematch sometime soon.

Ikenga said Police operatives have been deployed to the scene, and that normalcy has been restored in the area, while Nwosu urged Indigenes to alert security officials when they notice security breaches.

Nwosu said: “A gang of gunmen struck the Nigerian Army checkpoint at Afor-Uzo Junction, Isuofia, this morning. Unfortunately for the hoodlums, they met their Waterloo.

“Our gallant and alert security agents who gave them a hot chase immediately returned fire and neutralised four of the gang members in a fierce exchange of shootings. Their Toyota Venza with which they launched the deadly operation was recovered.”

Obi Contributing To Why Nigeria Is Going Down, Importing Unemployment — Oshiomhole

Joe Ajaero: I Was Brutalized, Detained By DSS – Oshiomhole
Oshiomhole

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has alleged that Peter Obi, Labour Party Presidential Candidate, is “contributing to how Nigeria is going down”.

Oshiomhole said this during the flag-off of APC presidential campaign and senatorial election at Auchi, Edo.

Oshiomhole urged Nigerians to be careful of Obi, whom he described as a man man who could not develop and grow the economy of Anambra state when he was governor.

“Obi owns the biggest shopping mall in Abuja and all the items sold there are imported, so if he is selling imported wines, clothes and other items, he is contributing to why Nigeria is going down because he is creating job abroad and importing unemployment to Nigeria,” he said.

The former governor said he is not contesting the National Assembly seat to become a Senator sharing motor bikes, tricycles and grinding machines to youths and widows.

He said he is going to the National Assembly to change the nation’s budgetary system so that budget will work for the people.

“I am troubled by the way we manage our budget at the National Assembly. I want to go there and argue on the floor of the Assembly that we should change our budgetary system. Our budget must work for the people.”

“I want to be a Senator, not a Senator sharing grinding machines for widows, buying motor bikes or Keke Napeps for 10 out of 10,000 youths. I don’t need to be a senator to support widows and youths. I have done that and I am still doing that, today I am paying school fee for people who don’t have money to go to school,” he said.

He said if he can fight on the street for the ordinary Nigerians, he would even fight harder on the floor of the Assembly to ensure that Edo North Senatorial district and Nigeria benefit more from the national Assembly.

“I can’t have N500 million for constituency project and go and buy Keke napeps motor bikes and grinding machines, that is not lawmaking” he said.

“The minister of works told me that the problem why road constructions are not completed is that the National Assembly will take half of the money budgeted for a road and approved four other roads on that approved fund, this is why we have unfinished roads all over Nigeria.”

He said he would use the floor of the Senate to ensure that when the executive brings a budget, you don’t start new road when the existing one are not completed.

He urged Nigeria to vote for a person with track record of performance in his previous position held in his political careers, noting that among the those contesting for president, the candidate of the APC, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu ,stands out as a great performer.

“Tinubu is the most suitable person for the president in 2023, They are throw stones at him because they have seen that they can’t dispute his performance. They said he didn’t go to school but they say he was the treasurer of Mobil oil company. Will an oil company employs someone as chief accountant or treasurer if he didn’t go to school?”

“You have seen how Tinubu transformed Lagos, when he see a performing young person, he mentored and grow him to become a leader. That is why he has produced governors, senators, ministers among others. So Tinubu is the one who will bring up young Nigerians and mentor them.”

According to him, Obi and Peoples Democratic Party candidates, Atiku Abubakar can’t unite Nigeria, adding that they are serial defectors who can’t be trusted.

He said Atiku doesn’t believe in the unity of Nigeria as he had said in Kaduna state that northerners should not vote for a Yoruba and Ibo man as president, saying that a man who doesn’t believe in other tribes can’t unify Nigeria and can’t be voted for as president

“Atiku defected from the PDP to the ACN, when he lost the election, he decamp to the PDP, he contest and lost and defected to APC, he again defected to the PDP and contested with Buhari and lost and now he still contesting. Can you vote for such candidate?”

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu command has said a dismissed police officer was among those killed in jungle justice in Enugu in allegation bordering on robbing a PoS operator.

Two young men who wanted to make it big this forthcoming Yelutide on Wednesday afternoon met their Waterloo in Enugu as irate mobs set them ablaze alive.

The incident took place at the Independence Layout area along the ever busy Independence Avenue popularly known as Bissala Road.

It was gathered that the duo were caught trying to rob POS operators in the area and were apprehended by residents who decided to deal with them.

Before setting them on fire, they were first stripped naked and their video went viral before they were ignited by fire.

Investigation shows that the angry mobs would not allow the police to take them to their station but decided to take laws into their hands, instead.

The police were yet to confirm the incident as the police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe said that he had not been informed about the unwholesome development.

“The incident has not been brought to my notice but I’ll find out,” he said.

The country director of Global Society for Anti-Corruption, G-SAC, Mrs. Amaka Nweke condemned the jungle Justice.

Nweke however condemned the attacks on POS operators but said people should not take laws into their hands but hand over such matters to the law enforcement agencies.

“I condemn what the robbers do to the POS operators but at the same time I condemn mob action. They should have handed them over to the police instead of taking laws into their hands,” she condemns.

However a resident who would not want his name in print said the robbers deserved what they got.

“I like the way they were set ablaze alive so that it will serve as a deterrent to others. If you have been a victim of these bad boys, you will even want a worse thing to happen to them. I have no pity for them. Let them burn in hell for all I care,” he said.

Okorocha Asks Court To Dismiss N2.9bn Fraud Charges Against Him, Says It's Baseless
Senator Rochas Okorocha

A former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to quash a N2.9B billion money laundering charge brought against him by the Federal Government.

The former governor is claiming that the fraud charges initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of the Federal Government constituted a gross abuse of the court and a deliberate misuse of prosecutory powers.

In a preliminary objection against the charges filed by Okorocha through his counsel, Mr Ola Olanipekun (SAN), he gave six grounds on why the charges should be dismissed.

Among others, the former governor, now a Senator, claimed that the charge is unlawful, baseless, oppressive and a gross abuse of the process of the court.

The federal lawmaker sought an order from the court that will discharge, and/or acquit him from the charges.

Olanipekun argued that the investigation upon which the charge was predicated was a subject matter of another suit instituted against EFCC by his client, hence, the current charge, as constituted amounted to abuse of the court and the power to prosecute.

The senior lawyer explained in the preliminary objection that Okorocha had, in the earlier suit, sought declaratory and prohibitory orders that are still extant, at all times material, before and after the preferment of the charge.

Okorocha, as the first defendant, was arraigned alongside Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited as second to seventh defendants respectively.

Meanwhile, the court has fixed November 22 for hearing of the preliminary objection marked FHC/ABJ/CR/28/22.

Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo fixed the date to allow EFCC’s counsel, Mr Gbolahan Latona, to respond to all issues raised against his client by Okorocha.

The judge said the application would be taken on the adjourned date and ordered all parties to file and exchange all necessary processes before the scheduled date.

ABN TV recalls that Okorocha was arraigned by the EFCC on May 30 on 17-count charges bothering on the laundering of public funds to the tune of N2.9 billion while serving as governor of Imo State.

Justice Ekwo had on May 31 admitted Okorocha and his co-defendants to bail in the sum of N500 million with one surety in like sum.
