PDP Crisis: G5 Meet With South West Leaders, Insist On Ayu’s Removal

Five Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party and some aggrieved party stalwarts have reiterated calls for the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu before peace could return to the former ruling party.

The G5 Governors made their position known after a closed-door strategic meeting on Sunday in Lagos State.

The meeting was hosted by its former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George.

The G5 Governors, led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, declared that their “Integrity Group” still stands on the position earlier taken in Port-Harcourt on the removal of Ayu.

The group, which had been at loggerheads with the leadership of the main opposition party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, however, reiterated that the window for reconciliation in the party remained open.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the G5 Governors: Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and Wike, began the call for the sack of Ayu shortly after the party’s presidential ticket was won by a northerner, Abubakar.

Addressing newsmen after the closed-door meeting, former Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State said the group arrived at the decision after a careful review of developments in the party.

Jang said: “After a careful review of developments in our party, we have decided to stand on the decisions we took in our Port-Harcourt meeting.

“And we hereby reiterate that the window for reconciliation in our great party, PDP, remains open.”

NAN reports that other PDP leaders at the meeting were former governors Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo State), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Donald Duke (Cross River), and Jonah Jang (Plateau).

Also present were former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke; Deputy National Chairman, South, of the PDP, Taofeek Arapaja; Senator Nasif Suleiman; Nnena Ukeje; Senator Sandy Onor; Senator Mao Ohabunwa; and Chief Dan Orbih among others.

Recall that the aggrieved PDP leaders had maintained that Ayu must resign for the sake of fairness and justice so as to bring peace to the party.

The aggrieved group said there was a need for the South to produce the PDP national chairman because the party’s presidential flag-bearer for the 2023 election is from the North.

The world football body, FIFA, has banned England striker, Harry Kane, from wearing the ‘OneLove’ armband during the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

Kane has been threatened by FIFA that he would receive an instant yellow card if he walks onto the pitch wearing the armband in their opening match against Iran on Monday afternoon (today).

FIFA has strict rules about apparel that can be worn by players and the armband is not allowed under the code.

INEC Denies Distorting Abia Election Result, Says Report Fake
Mahmood Yakubu

Amid allegations of underage voter registrations ahead of the 2023 elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has reiterated its assurance to the Nigerian electorate that citizens who have yet to attain the legal voting age will not be allowed to participate in the polls.

The Director of Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, Victor Aluko, said this during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday.

I assure you that the register will be cleaned up completely and no underage voter will vote in 2023. After we finish with the claims and objections on Friday, we will be taking in again for further claims based on the complaints of the people,” he said.

“That is why it is important that persons who noticed any issues at all with the register should complain through the right channels where they can be documented.”

Aluko stated that after collating the complaints, INEC’s revision officers at various levels could work on them.

“If you complain and you do not let us know that complaint, then how do we work on the complaints?

“That is why I’m saying we take in the register and then we work on the register, and at the end of the day, we have a very clean register as we prepare for the general elections.

“And I’m assuring you that no underage person will come to our polling units to come and vote on election day,” he said.

INEC had this month made the entire register public on its website for the first time in the nation’s electoral history.

However, many Nigerians have identified numerous cases of underage voters and double registration.

But the National Commissioner, INEC, Festus Okoye, on Thursday, assured Nigerians that it was committed to cleaning up the register and punishing those found guilty of tampering with its integrity.

Naira Redesign: CBN Launches Countdown Clock On Its Website

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has set a countdown clock on its website showing the deadline for three banknotes in circulation.

Recall that the apex bank had announced plans to redesign, produce, release and circulate a new series of three banknotes out of the existing eight banknotes.

The redesigned notes would include N200, N500, and N1000.

On the new notes, Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor, had explained that the decision was due to persisting concerns with the management of the current series of banknotes and currency in circulation — particularly those outside the banking system.

According to Emefiele, one of these challenges primarily include significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public, with statistics showing that over 80 percent of the currency in circulation is outside the vaults of commercial banks.

Despite the decision, some experts believe it would negatively affect the economy.

Last week, CBN instructed commercial banks to work Saturdays to enable customers to return existing naira notes.

Osun Guber: You’ve No Mandate To Retrieve, Adeleke Replies Oyetola

I will complete Oyetola’s Projects — Gov. Adeleke

Osun State Governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has urged Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to stop hallucinating over his persistent claim of retrieving his mandate.

Governor Oyetola had at different fora, after Senator Adeleke was declared winner of July 16 governorship election, claimed that he lost vote counting not election and that he will retrieve his mandate soon.

However, Adeleke in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed on Sunday chided the governor, saying he has no mandate to reclaim as he was soundly defeated in the July 16 poll.

While calling attention to the rabid pillaging of Osun state assets since July election, Adeleke noted that the many lies of Oyetola on the governorship tribunal have been exposed and his petition punctured as baseless and unfounded.

“The antics of a false democrat whose role model are little tyrants and trumpists of this world.

“From media trial to outright sponsorship of falsehood against proceedings at the Tribunal, Mr Oyetola and the All Progressive Congress (APC) have practically abandoned diligent prosecution of their petition, while chasing shadows with unrelated and unpleased applications and submissions.

“Oyetola has been exhibiting the highest level of leadership hypocrisy in recent Nigerian history as he supervises last minute ruining of the state, while parroting his false hope of reclaiming a non-existing mandate.

“You know you are going. You are emptying the treasury and laying bobby traps for Osun people.

“Yet, you mount rooftop every now and then to deceive your gullible associates and accomplices in political banditry.

“Our message to you and your team is simple. This is your last week in Government House.

“Pack all what you want. But be rest assured that every official, elected or appointed, who partake in the diversion of our common patrimony, will have their day before people’s panels of inquiry,” the statement reads partly.
