The Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reiterated that the easiest and shortest way for an Igbo man to become the president of Nigeria is for Atiku Abubakar to be president in 2023.

The State Director-General of the Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa campaign organisation, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo made the statement in Awka Anambra State on Wednesday evening.

“Atiku Abubakar and the PDP is the shortest feasible route for an Igbo to be president in Nigeria in view of the present realities on the ground. This may be difficult to accept for certain people in the South East for the time being, but it remains the only logical path for an Igbo political renaissance in Nigeria and easy election to the presidency in the next 4-8 years,” he said.

According to him, what the south-east and Ndi-Igbo currently need is their reconnection to the National Grid by having genuine reconciliation, and forging strategic alliances with other regions of the country.

He said their alignment with Atiku Abubakar is never for selfish gain but for the collective interest of the South East and Ndi-Igbo. Obiora said that no particular region can produce the president without the support of other regions, noting that the south-east should support Atiku for good.

“It will be dangerous for the South-East to be isolated and abandoned in the opposition for another 8 years in our nation’s democracy and the only person who will integrate the Igbo is Atiku,” he said.

He urged the south-east as a region to collectively support and vote for PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in 2023.

“It is obvious that the South-East region and Ndi-Igbo are treated like lepers under the APC. It is quite instructive for the South-East and Ndi-Igbo to be rational and strategic with their votes and support to help other parts of the country unseat the APC and reinstate the PDP while we will have to enjoy more stake to produce the President post-2023,” he said.

According to Obiora, in order for the south-east to achieve greater success, they must make sacrifices that would strengthen the region as a whole and reawaken the republican and tenacious spirit in them.

“We must make sacrifices that will build on the successes that the South-East and North have already achieved through strategic alliance in the past,” he said.

According to him, among the promises of the Atiku-Okowa joint ticket is the assurance that Nigeria will be restructured and Atiku will ensure true federalism to replicate the development associated with Ndi-Igbo in the Third Republic.

“We urge Ndi-Igbo, the intellectual, leaders of thoughts of the South-East, to put their faith in our choice to support Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election. We are confident that it will serve the interests of our people and region and that our efforts will be recognized and appreciated after 2023,” he stated.

An Appeal Court sitting in Yola, Adamawa State capital, has declared Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State.

The court presided over by Justice Tani Yusuf Hassan set aside the judgement of a Federal High Court which nullified the governorship primary and declared that APC has no candidate for the 2023 governorship election.

A former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who contested but lost the ticket of the party had challenged Binani’s victory in court.

He had filed a suit to seek nullification of the primary conducted on May 27. Ribadu, who hinged his suit on alleged votes buying, over-voting and delegate inducement, asked the court to disqualify Binani and declare him the candidate of the APC in the state.

He sought an order restraining APC from submitting Binani’s name to INEC as the governorship candidate of APC on the grounds that she had emerged from an invalid and unlawful exercise.

After the nullification of her candidacy, the senator challenged the ruling of the lower court at the appeal court.

APC and Binani through their counsel, Sule J. Abul and Sam Ologunorisa, filed a notice of preliminary objections and counter-affidavits.

While APC challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter, Binani in her preliminary objection argued that Ribadu’s suit was not properly constituted.

She described the suit as incompetent, contentious, rancorous and contained allegations of fraud, commission of a crime, and that it cannot be heard or determined by way of the originating summons.

In its judgement on Thursday, the Appellate court ordered that Binani’s name be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) immediately.

Bello Turji, notorious bandits’ leader, has reportedly held five residents of Moriki town in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State captive.

The victims were said to have been held after they delivered N10.5 million “Protection Levy” slammed on their community.

A couple of weeks ago, Turji imposed N20 million “Protection Levy” on Moriki community which is located 33km along Kaura Namoda -Shinkafi road.

The terror kingpin said if the community could raise and deliver the money within two weeks, they should have no fear of attacks and every farmer from the town could tend to his farmland without any intimidation.

Moriki, an emirate, is the biggest town after Zurmi, headquarters of the local government area. The community has been recording abductions and deadly raids.

Residents told Daily Trust that Turji has escalated attacks on Moriki and other neighbouring communities since the NAF raid on his residence near Fakai village in the neighbouring Shinkafi local government area in September.

“After he imposed the levy we met at the community level to see what we could do to raise the said amount of money bearing in our minds the consequences of ignoring his demand.”

“We came up with an idea that every house hold in the community must pay N6500 and if we add that we would get the N20 million for onward delivery before the deadline ends.

“We were able to raise N10.6 million as some community members defaulted. We used N100,000 to buy them packs of cigarette, loaves of bread, soft drinks and recharge cards as they instructed.

“Seven members of the community were mobilized and dispatched to deliver the money at an agreed spot near Kasayawa, a community located 1km east of Moriki town. After the delivery team arrived at the location, seventeen Turji’s boys rode to the spot and asked for the money and other items we bought for them.

“However, when Turji’s attention was drawn to the fact that the money brought was N10.5 million not N20 million as agreed he became angry and ordered his boys to hold five out seven members of the delivery team. He asked them to take the residents to one of his camps in Jirari forest straddling Zurmi and Shinkafi local government areas. Even though two of them escaped and arrived home this morning.

“We are now put on edge and we have started making effort to reach out to him that we will deliver the balance of N10 million to him. We are in a serious trouble as a people,” a resident, Sani Moriki, said.

The spokesman of the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, said he would find out what had actually happened.

Atiku stated this through his Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) spokesman, Daniel Bwala.

The aggrieved PDP governors, popularly known as G5 Governors, led by Wike in alliance with some chieftains of the party, had recently announced the formation of Integrity Group.

Akpabio Steps Down, Backs Tinubu

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has granted leave to Senator Godswill Akpabio as an interested party to appeal the judgement of the court which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to delete his name as the duly elected candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District and replace him with DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.).

This was contained in a statement issued by Senator Godswill Akpabio’s Chief Press secretary Mr.Jackson Udom, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday.

The Court of appeal on Monday, November 14, 2022, in the Appeal brought by Ekpoudom against the APC and INEC, had declared that Ekpoudom was the candidate of the APC for Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District in the 2023 elections.

Akpabio’s lawyers, Umeh Kalu SAN and Berth Igwilo, SAN, had applied for Leave for Akpabio to be joined in the Appeal because he was not a party in the proceedings, to enable him to approach the Supreme Court for reprieve.

Delivering judgement on the Motion for Leave after hearing Mr Umeh Kalu, SAN, Berth Igwilo, SAN, the three-man Panel of the Justices of the Court of Appeal, led by Hon. Justice U.A. Ogakwu, unanimously granted Akpabio’s prayers saying that it was satisfied that the applicant had deposed to cogent issues in his affidavit and further affidavits to warrant the grant of Leave to appeal the judgement of the Court of Appeal.

The court further held that since Senator Godswill Akpabio’s name had earlier been forwarded to INEC as the candidate of the APC, it was imperative to allow him appeal the judgement of the court delivered in his absence.

Commenting on the ruling, Umeh Kalu, SAN, commended the Justices for their sound reasoning in the judgment saying, “you cannot shave a persons head in his absence.”

By this ruling, Akpabio is expected to approach the Supreme Court before the end of the week.

After Discovery Of Oil In North, Lawan Cautions Against Environmental Pollution

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has warned the operators of the Kolmani Oil and Gas field not to contaminate the area like Ogoniland in the Niger Delta.

Lawan said the people of the North-East are principally farmers and land is very dear to them, hence, the operators of OPL 809 and 810 should be very cautious of how they carry out their activities in the Kolmani oil field which is between Bauchi and Gombe states.

He stated this on Tuesday when President Muhammadu Buhari flagged off the Kolmani Integrated Development Project for upstream production and oil refining.

Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District in the Senate, expressed delight at the discovery of the first oil well in the frontier basins, saying more Kolmani oil fields can be discovered in Northern Nigeria.

The Senate President said, “The fact that we have oil does not automatically give us the edge that we need. But we are comforted because we have an NNPC that today can do a lot more in the area of deployment of technology, in the area of ensuring that the environment is really contaminated.

“What has happened in the Niger Delta is worrisome even though to the credit of this administration, the oil spillage and other oil contamination have been worked on in the area of clearing the spillage, especially in Ogoniland and that is something worth $1bn.

“Your Excellency, therefore, I want to advise that the operators of OPL 809 and 810 should be very cautious and mindful of how they sustain their activities without contaminating the environment of our people.

“Our people are largely farmers and therefore land is very dear to us and we don’t want to lose any land. Our people are very cooperative and we believe that that synergy between the operators and host communities will be smooth.”

Lawan further expressed his elation that Bauchi and Gombe states will soon be getting 13% oil derivation paid by the Federal Government to oil-producing states.

The lawmaker made a case for host communities which he said bore the brunt of oil exploration by demanding that state governments dedicate some percentage to these communities. To this end, he mulled a constitutional review on the application of the 13% derivation given to states.

Ogoniland, one of the earliest oil exploration and production sites in the Niger Delta, is synonymous to environmental degradation as oil spills continue to affect the region, due to such factors as a lack of maintenance and vandalism to oil infrastructure and facilities.

In 2016, the Buhari administration flagged off the Ogoni oil spillage clean-up exercise in the Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State but rights groups in the area have said the oil spills remains untreated, or only partially remediated. The development has affected farming, fishing and other activities within the area.

No Comparison Between Tinubu, Peter Obi, Says Nasarawa Governor

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has said that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmad Tinubu, will rule Nigeria for eight years.

He also said there is no basis for comparing the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, with Tinubu.

Governor Sule stated these during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

He said, “The economy in Lagos is better today than that of Anambra. Yes or no? Having them is like a day and night. You know there is no comparison. Then when you say I should compare them what am I comparing?”

However, the governor said that Nigeria’s oil production would increase before President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office.

He said, “Today with all the issues we are facing, we are producing 1.2 to 1.3 million barrels per day. By the time Muhammadu Buhari hands over to Asiwaju, it will be 1.5 million barrels per day.

“You will see what is happening in this country. Inflation will go to single digit by the grace of God and all those other numbers will do the same. Tinubu is going to rule this country for another eight years by the grace of God.”

Presidency Not About Tribe, Says Adebanjo After Campaigning For Peter Obi In Ibadan

Pa Ayo Adebanjo, leader of pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Wednesday, campaigned for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The nonagenarian, who briefly addressed the crowd at the Adamasingba stadium in Yoruba, said he does not hate All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu but the 2023 Presidency is not about tribe.

“To critics saying this one (Obi) is Igbo, that one is Yoruba, the Presidency of Nigeria is not about Igbo or Yoruba but the whole of Nigeria,” he said.

In his speech, Obi paid “sincere respects” to the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo and other respected Yoruba leaders including Adebanjo whom he said stands for equity and fairness.

The LP candidate said, “What Adebanjo and Afenifere is standing for today is what will make the future of Nigeria, they are standing for equity, they are standing for fairness. Justice, equity and fairness should be the foundation of which we will build a united Nigeria.”

Last month, Adebanjo had said Obi remains his choice despite the endorsement of Tinubu by his predecessor, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Tinubu had visited Fasoranti on October 30, 2022 at his residence in Ondo State where the nonagenarian ‘anointed’ him.

However, 94-year-old Adebanjo, who succeeded Fasoranti as Afenifere leader last year, said while he won’t want to join issues with his predecessor, Obi remains his choice candidate for the February 2023 presidential poll.

Previously, Adebanjo said to keep Nigeria one in 2023, every Nigeria should be “Obi-Datti compliant”. Obi is running for Aso Rock’s top job alongside Datti Baba-Ahmed.

He also said he won’t compromise his cherished principles of justice, equity, and inclusiveness.

“The South-West has produced a president and currently sits as vice-president, the South-South has spent a total of six years in the presidency but the Igbo people of the South-East have never tasted presidency in Nigeria, and now that the power is due back in the South, equity demands that it be ceded to the Igbo.

“We cannot continue to demand that the Igbo people remain in Nigeria, while we at the same time continue to brutally marginalize and exclude them from the power dynamic.

“Peter Obi is the person of Igbo extraction that Afenifere has decided to support and back, he is the man we trust to restructure the country back to federalism on the assumption of office.

“We will not compromise this principle of justice, equity, and inclusiveness because one of our own Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a frontline candidate,” he had said.

Three Months After Reconciliation, Wife Stabs Husband To Death Over Sexual Advances In Oyo

A 27-year-old housewife, Odunayo Olumale has stabbed her husband, Olamilekan Salahudeen to death for making sexual advances to her.

The incident happened three months after the couple reconciled and reunited following their separation.

Speaking in Ibadan while parading the suspect at the Oyo Police Command headquarter, Eleyele, Ibadan, yesterday, Police spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, said preliminary investigation showed that the deceased and his wife returned to their house at Oko-Oba area of Oyo town on the day of the incident after their three-month separation.

Osifeso said: “On 17/11/2022 about 0350hrs, one Ismaila Tijani reported at Dubar Divisional Police headqauters that about 0223hrs of 16/11/2022, that his son named Olamilekan Salahudeen age 35 was stabbed to death with a knife by his wife Odunayo.”

“The deceased made a move to have sexual intercourse with his wife but rejected, this further led to the struggle where the deceased collected and smashed his wife’s phone and in retaliation, the deceased was stabbed on the chest, leading to his death”

Osifeso said the suspect has since confessed to the crime and her unfortunate role in the incident, adding that she would be charged to court upon completion of the investigations.

The suspect declined comment when asked by journalists to talk about the incident.

Other 25 suspects paraded by the command include suspected hoodlums who specialised in burggling and looting of warehouses, suspected armed robbers, suspected kidnappers, among others.
