UK Returns Looted Benin Artefacts To Nigeria

A small museum in south-east London has begun the official process of returning looted Benin artefacts to Nigeria.

The Horniman Museum, which houses a collection of 72 treasured items that were taken by force from Benin City in 1897, officially handed over ownership of the artefacts to the Nigerian government on Monday.

The Horniman described returning the looted objects as a “moral and appropriate” response after a request from Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments.

There are still questions about whether thousands of items which were held at large institutions globally, including the British Museum, will ever be sent back.

However, the first six objects which were returned included two Benin Bronze plaques from the royal palace which were handed over to Nigerian officials at a ceremony marking the transfer of ownership of 72 looted items.

The items were taken from Benin City by British troops in February 1897.

Nick Merriman, chief executive of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, and prof. Abba Tijani, the NCMM’s director general, were asked by journalists ahead of the official handover if they were frustrated at the British Museum’s apparent reluctance to hand over the 900 objects it had held for more than a century.

IGP Reacts To Prison Sentence, Denies Knowledge Of Order He Disobeyed
IGP Usman Baba

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has reacted to the order of a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, sentencing him (IGP) to three months in prison for flouting a 2011 court order.

The IGP’s committal followed a suit that was filed by a police officer, Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force.

Reacting to the court’s ruling, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued said the IGP did not disregard the court order or the rule of law as “the office is not aware of any Court Order, during the current IGP’s tenure, with respect to a matter making the round in the media that the IGP disobeyed a Court Order for the reinstatement of a dismissed officer of the Force”.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force wishes to state emphatically that the office of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, NEAPS, fdc, CFR, did not disregard Court Order or rule of law as the office is not aware of any Court Order, during the current IGP’s tenure, with respect to a matter making the round in the media that the IGP disobeyed a Court Order for the reinstatement of a dismissed officer of the Force.

“It is instructive to note that the case in point concerns an officer who was dismissed as far back as 1992, a few years after the current IGP joined the Nigeria Police Force, based on available facts gleaned from the reports. The most recent judgement on the matter was given in 2011 which should ordinarily not fall under the direct purview of the current administration of the Force. Thus, the news is strange and astonishing.

“The IGP has however directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Force Legal Unit to investigate the allegation in a bid to ascertain the position of the court and profer informed legal advice for the IGP’s prompt and necessary action.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to upholding the rule of law and synergizing with the judiciary to ensure quick dispensation of justice for an improved criminal justice system.”

In Less Than Four Years, Orji Kalu Has Attracted 60 Roads, Are You In Same Senate With Him – Okafor Queries Abaribe

I Will Sack Abaribe Through Appeal Court – LP Candidate, Onyeizu
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe

Mr. Theophilus Okafor has sought explanation from the Senator representing Abia South, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe on what he has done in the past 16 years in the Senate, wondering if it is the same Senate Orji Kalu (Abia North) has been in the last four years.

He said Sen. Kalu has been able to attract about 60 roads in the past four years, wondering what Abaribe has done in his 16 years as a Senator.

Okafor in an article said, “He has nothing to show in his senatorial district for the 16 long years he spent in the Senate. Recently, a businessman at Ariaria Market in Aba, Hillary Nduka, asked a reporter in Igbere, in Abia North Senatorial District, if it was the same Senate that Abaribe and Kalu have been.

“He said he could not understand how Abaribe failed to return anything to his constituency, while Orji Kalu has done over 60 roads in just four years.

“Speaking shortly after he saw a road inaugurated by Kalu in Abia North, the trader said: “My brother, please, are Abaribe and Kalu in the same Senate? Or is Abaribe at the section where they only talk without doing anything? I mean, can you compare him with what Kalu or Senator Ike Ekweremadu have done in their zones? Why are we this unlucky in Abia South?”

“In fact, in Abia South, it is a known fact that Abaribe now goes about blaming the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari for his failure to accomplish anything meaningful. But that is contrary to the facts on the ground”.

He quoted a constituent of accusing Abaribe of not doing enough to ensure that the federal roads in his constituency, including Aba-Ikot Ekpene federal highway, Aba-Port Harcourt federal highway and many others are fixed, including the road to his house

“His constituents said that for the critical period he was their senator, it was PDP that led at the centre, yet, Abaribe could not deliver a single project to his people” he said.

He further accused Sen. Abaribe of sleeping in the Senate till he became the minority leader, an office he used in making political capital with the bail of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He added, “Indeed, in the first 12 years, Abaribe was at the Senate, he was literally sleeping until PDP made him the minority leader. That was when he found his voice, especially when the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) became strong in the South East. He moved to secure bail for the leader of the group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and made a political gain of it as the champion of the Igbo cause.

“We challenge him to show what he did on the floor of the Senate to better the lives of his people. Everything about Senator Abaribe is deceitful, including his public claim of signing a bail bond for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” a party leader said.”

Tinubu Assures He’ll Not Relocate Nigeria’s Capital To Lagos If Elected President

Tinubu’s Legal Team Bars Media Interviews On Petitions Against Presidential Election
Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed the rumour that he has a plan to relocate Nigeria’s capital to Lagos State.

Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida had relocated Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja on December 12, 1991.

However, there have been a rumour that Tinubu, a former Lagos governor, plans to return the nation’s capital to the state.

But in a statement which the APC Presidential Campaign Council issued on his behalf, Tinubu distanced himself from such talks.

“The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council hereby alerts Nigerians about the latest insidious campaign in some parts of the country against our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. After exhausting their arsenal of calumnies and character assassination against Tinubu, the opposition PDP and their surrogate Labour Party have begun a multi-pronged desperate campaign of falsehoods.”

“In one of the falsehoods being circulated, especially in the North West of the country, Tinubu is said to harbour plans to relocate the Federal Capital from Abuja to Lagos on succeeding President Muhammad Buhari from 29th May, 2023. This misinformation campaign, according to field reports, is being given some traction by some elders on the payroll of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“We are shocked that some people could contrive such egregious lie, all in the name of politics, with the intention to confuse our burgeoning support base in that part of the country. Let us say with emphasis, that Asiwaju does not contemplate any such plan and will not do anything that is so ultra-unconstitutional.

“The same purveyors of falsehood have also been distorting the commercialization of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited by the APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari. The truth is that President Buhari has not privatised NNPC as planned by the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Buhari has instead made it a commercial entity, owned by all the tiers of government, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.

“In due course, the company will be in a position to declare and share dividends to all its owners, the way Aramco of Saudi Arabia and Petrobas of Brazil do. As the destined successor of President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu will continue the policy of the Buhari administration. Unlike Atiku, Tinubu has no plan to sell NNPC to his friends or cronies,” read the statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media and Publicity of APC Presidential Campaign.
