Governors of the 36 states of the federation have said there is hardship in the land because President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to fulfil his 2019 campaign promises to Nigerians.

The Minister of State for budget and national planning, Clement Agba, had blamed state governors for the nation’s poverty index, saying the governors had abandoned 72 per cent of Nigeria’s poor citizens in the rural areas, only to build airports and flyovers.

A day after the Minister’s comment, President Buhari also accused the governors of stealing from the local government allocations.

But reacting to the allegations on Saturday, the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo said the federal government should not blame the governors for its failure to lift Nigerians out of poverty, provide security and make life better for the people.

Part of the statement reads, “It is the federal government that, in its campaign message in 2019, promised to take 100 million Nigerians out of poverty. Today, records show that more than 130 million Nigerians are living below the globally accepted poverty line of a dollar a day. Under the current administration that Mr Clement Agba is minister, the national cash cow, the NNPC, had failed to remit statutory allocations to states in several months.

“The situation had compelled governors to rely on other sources of revenue like; the SFTAS programme and other interventions anchored by the NGF, to fund states activities while monies budgeted for such federal ministries as agriculture, rural development and humanitarian affairs are not being deployed in the direction of the people.

“The Minister who should be responding to a question demanding to know what he and his colleague, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, were doing to ameliorate the hardship Nigerians are facing attempted to defray the notion that rising levels of hunger and lack were peculiar to Nigeria.

“It is the opinion of the governors that the dereliction that the Minister is talking about lies, strictly speaking, at the doorstep of the federal government which he represents, in this scenario.

The statement by the NGF further noted that the primary duty of the government is to ensure the security of lives and property, however, the current administration has been unable to fulfil this covenant with the people.

“First and foremost, the primary duty of any government is to ensure the security of lives and property, without which no sensible human activity takes place. But the federal government which is responsible for the security of lives and property has been unable to fulfil this covenant with the people thus allowing bandits, insurgents, and kidnappers to turn the country into a killing field, maiming and abducting people, in schools, market places and even on their farmlands.

“This dereliction of duty from the centre is the main reason why people have been unable to engage in regular agrarian activity and in commerce. Today, rural areas are insecure, markets are unsafe, surety of travel is improbable and life for the common people generally is harsh and brutish.

“The question is, how can a defenseless rural population maintain a sustainable lifestyle of peace and harmony when their lives are cut prematurely, and they wallow permanently in danger? How does a minister whose government has been unable to ensure security, law, and order have the temerity to blame governors?

“Two states, Edo and Akwa Ibom had promptly responded to the vituperations of the Minister. According to Akwa Ibom State, what determines poverty and unemployment in a country is its economic policy, which is set, normally by the central government nationally.

“Akwa Ibom insists that the federal government cannot abdicate its responsibility by blaming states and goes further to ask, albeit rhetorically, how economic policies in a state drive the dollar which determines almost every aspect of our national existence,” the e NGF noted.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has urged the people of the Abia South senatorial district to elect him to the senate, promising to bring more dividends of democracy to the zone, the way he has done as the state governor.

Ikpeazu, who made the appeal at the Abia PDP zonal rally in Aba, where also commissioned the rehabilitated Azikiwe road in the city, disclosed that his strategy for the 2023 general election is to commission projects during campaigns.

He explained that the 2023 elections is no longer about rhetoric and long stories, but for candidates to show their achievements recorded.

Ikpeazu further pledged to tackle the problem of the Customs officials who harassing importers from Aba who had paid duties on the roads in the zone as well as the dilapidated state of federal roads linking neighbouring states.

Noting that his administration has done many roads which were impassable before he came to office, Ikpeazu disclosed that with the caliber of PDP candidates in the 2023 general elections, the people of the Abia South would enjoy more dividends of democracy.

He said; “The people of Abia South have seen the representative that they will send to Abuja in 2023. What the people need is performance, not rhetoric and promises. Our strategy for the 2023 elections is that we will be commissioning projects as we campaign.

“Soon, we will open and commission the road that leads to Eziukwu market. Before the end of the campaign, we will also open Omuma road. I have come to show the people of Aba the projects we have done so far and the ones we will tackle in the coming days.

“I stand on the works we have done; Umuola, Ukaegbu, Ehere, Ovom, Kamalu, Umule , Osusu , Eziukwu, Milverton, Ojike, Ngwa, and Azikiwe which is being commissioned today.

“We are also on Obohia and Ohanku roads. I’m pleading with the people of Aba to send me to Abuja that I’m will bring dividends back home. We no longer want rhetoric and long story. No more long story, show us your handwork. Show us what you have done.

“I will deliver functional street lights to the people of Aba, not the ones that aren’t working as some people have done.

“There are many street lights that were gotten from Abuja and installed in Aba, that aren’t working. Aba is not a dumping ground. I will serve you with humility and the fear of God.We want a leader, not a ruler.I has lived here with you for the past seven years. This is why I know where more works are needed. We have not done all the works in Aba, we will do more roads including Uratta before the end of our tenure. We will solve the problems confronting importers in Aba which is the issue of Customs harassing our people on the road after they have cleared their goods at the ports. I’m the best candidate to be sent to Abuja because I will deliver the goods. I feel encouraged by your support. I have offered myself to serve with the fear of God. I want to reach a covenant with the people of Abia South that I will change the narrative. They said that there is nothing in the Senate, but I will prove them wrong. We will also raise the issue about the poor state of the federal roads linking Abia South to neighbouring states.”

Earlier, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state, Hon. Asiforo Okere, who congratulated Ikpeazu for his numerous achievements, assured that the PDP would win the 2023 general elections in the state.

In with journalists, Majority of the State House of Assembly, and candidates for the Obingwa East state Assembly, Chief Solomon Akpulonu, who stated that the PDP fielded popular candidates, insisted that the party has no opposition in the elections.

4 Yahoo Boys Die Of Drug Overdose While Celebrating Cash Out

Four suspected yahoo boys have died of drug overdose along the Nasco Egei Road of Biogbolo community in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The Bayelsa State Police Command said the unfortunate incident occurred at about 12 am on Friday, December 2, after the intake of two pills in celebration of a mysterious financial breakthrough by the deceased.

ABN TV reports that they died in the home rented by one of them known simply as Favour, a 19-year-old indigene of Southern Ijaw LGA.

Confirming the development, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Benjamin Okolo, said: “They died of a drug overdose. It is quite unfortunate that they administered the dr¥g themselves. They were five and the one that survived told us that they took two pills each and that he took one. This was why they died.”

A 300-level student of Business Administration at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Ebuka Joshua, has reportedly committed suicide after taking a sniper.

This was confirmed by Unizik Plus, a campus press outfit in the school via a Facebook post on Friday.

“Stories have it that the deceased Ebuka Joshua, has been battling with depression from the beginning of this semester following his inability to cope with his studies.

“May his soul rest in peace!,” the post added.

Suicide among university students in Nigeria has lately become a disturbing trend.

For Instance, a popular online media platform also reported that a young graduate identified as Ugwoke Jerry has committed suicide in Nsukka, Enugu State in October.

It was learnt that Jerry was found hanging on a tree by his colleagues inside a forest in the community, a discovery which caused tension among the students.

Before his death, the deceased had sent an emotional message to his mother on why he decided to commit suicide.

“You are the best mother ever, in this world. Am sorry for disappointing you. Please.” he said in the message to his mother. The reason for his action remained unknown.

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is wasting his time.

This was contained in a statement made available to journalists on Friday by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Isiguzoro who described the PDP presidential candidate as a victim of nemesis, said he was reaping the fruit of what he did to former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

“Nemesis has caught up with Atiku Abubakar after he treacherously rounded hijacked some governors in 2015 to provide an opposition as against the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan by forming alliances with then ACN, led by Bola Tinubu, CPC led by Muhammadu Buhari and ANPP led by Ogbonnaya Onu, a faction of APGA led by Rochas Okorocha and the then New PDP, which he led.”

“He was able to lead former Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers, former Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano, former Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara and former Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa against their own party, PDP.

“Now nature has finally come up against him and he is reaping the reward; let him stop wasting his time and resources,” Isiguzoro said.

He alleged that God was using the G-5 governors led by Nyesom Wike to deal with Atiku “over what he did to Jonathan”.

“Ndigbo commends the G5 Governors led by Governor Wike for their opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s Presidency in the 2023 election.

“Whatever Atiku had sowed in 2015, he is now reaping in 2023. He and the same gang members that destroyed Jonathan’s chances in 2015 have also undermined the PDP zoning formula that favours the South East,” he said.

He, however, told Wike and other members of G-5 to save the nation from imminent danger ahead of 2023 elections.

“These Governors have crafted their names in gold by thwarting the heinous plans to nullify the gentleman’s agreement of rotational Presidency between the North and the South which was the basis for peace and sustainable democracy in Nigeria since 1999.

“As a serial presidential contestant, Atiku should start planning for 2027.”

Prof. Uduma Kalu, a renowned academician on Friday commended the Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on the number of projects he has attracted and executed in the Senatorial District since he was elected in 2019.

The University Don stated this in a chat with newsmen, saying that he is not surprised by the performance of the former Abia State Governor.

He said: “Abia North Senatorial District has made progress in the last three and half years and the remarkable results are there for all to see.

Today, ABSU is in shambles, and teachers are not paid. During his era, teachers including other civil servants were well taken care of, including timely payment of their salaries, allowances, and gratuities. He even paid thirteenth month salary back then.

“He also built and funded health centres where drugs were given out to Abians for free of charge. He built Abia State University Teaching Hospital with world-class facilities, go there today, and you will weep for yourself. Kalu is a thorough leader with outstanding qualities. He built roads across the three Senatorial District without discriminating any zone. He invested so much in agriculture thereby providing food security for Abians even when President Olusegun Obasanjo tried to make life difficult for him.

“Today he is doing the same thing as the Senator repressing Abia North Senatorial District; Performance is in his DNA,” he said.

He appealed to the people of Abia North Senatorial District to continue to support the Chief Whip of the Senate, noting that Kalu was ready to do more for the district if reelected in 2023.

“We must unite and reelect Senator Orji Uzor Kalu because we cannot afford to go backward to the era of zero-project. Abia South and Central are envious of Abia North because of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s performance. We are talking of over 70 verifiable projects across Abia North. From Umunneochi down to Arochukwu is now a construction site. We must rally round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu by returning back to the Senate overwhelmingly.”

Kenya: President Ruto Suspends Four Electoral Commissioners Who Rejected His Win

Kenya’s President William Ruto on Friday ordered the suspension of four independent electoral commissioners who disputed his win in the August presidential election and set up a panel to inquiry to investigate if they should be removed, the presidency said .

This comes as the national assembly urges Ruto to form a tribunal against the Commissioners — Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi.

Raila Odinga, the veteran opposition leader who narrowly lost the August election has condemned Ruto’s action against the dissenting commissioners.

“They (Ruto’s government) have started a scheme to remove the four who stood for justice,” Odinga said on Friday and accused Ruto of trying to seize control of the management of the next election at the cost of acting on the promises he made to Kenyans.

“They want to appoint their own members of the commission to carry out their rigging in 2027,” Odinga said, vowing to hold public rallies to consult with Kenyans on the next steps.

The four Commisioners held a parallel news conference on Aug. 15 to say they could not be party to the results that were being announced live on television by the chairman and two other commissioners.

The dispute proceeded to the Supreme Court, which upheld the election of Ruto and rejected the arguments advanced by the four about the tallying process being opaque.

The court found that a “boardroom rupture” between the commissioners had undermined public confidence, but it was not enough to invalidate the election.

It, however, called for reforms in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Opposition parties in Benue State have accused the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, of supporting the political activities of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at the expense of his (Ortom’s) constitutional responsibilities of providing governance.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Austin Agada, who spoke to our correspondent on the phone on Friday, said Ortom had reduced himself to an “errand boy” to his counterpart in Rivers State in the name of playing politics.

Agada said Ortom had long abandoned the state to pursue his interest which he said had caused a serious setback to the state in the past seven years.

He said, “He (Ortom) had long ago attached himself to Wike; this is responsible for his abysmal performance in the past seven years. He has abandoned governance which is the reason everything is in total decay. He is a disaster to Benue State, he has become an errand boy or may I call him deputy to Wike or an aide to Wike; that is the reason you always see him going around with Wike.

Also the Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Joseph Ogli, “I don’t know if it is the tradition of the Peoples Democratic Party to be gallivanting and not sit in their state.

“But I promise you, APGA can not behave like that. Leaving the state and following another governor is not in our character and if by the grace of God, our party wins the forthcoming governorship election, our candidate, Joseph Waya, will not descend to that level but rather will face governance.”

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Herman Hembe, said his priority would be to meet the yearnings of the people if he wins the governorship election in 2023.

Hembe said, “As for me, I am focusing on how to lift my people from underdevelopment. I will focus on the payment of salaries to workers and pensioners and pay more attention to providing employment to the teaming youths.

 

Hoodlums Burn Down INEC Office In Imo, Abduct Construction Workers

Hoodlums have set ablaze an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State, kidnapping some construction workers who were later rescued.

“The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Professor Sylvia Uchenna Agu, reported that our office in Orlu Local Government Area was attacked. The incident occurred yesterday Thursday 1st December 2022,” INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye said in a statement on Friday.

“The building, which is undergoing extensive renovation following an earlier attack, was vandalised and partially set ablaze. Three out of seven construction workers were abducted but later released.”

Okoye said the damage would have been more extensive barring the response of the police personnel who were quick in mobilising their men to the scene.

“This is one attack too many. The Commission once again expresses its concern over the spate of attacks on its facilities and the negative consequences on our preparations for the 2023 General Election,” he added.

INEC has warned that the attacks may affect next year’s election.

Attacks on INEC offices have become commonplace across Nigeria with the nation set for the polls early next year.

In November, several INEC offices were attacked with the Commission warning of the threat of intensifying campaign violence ahead of the election, adding that it had tracked at least 50 attacks in the last two months.

Parliamentary and state elections will also be held in February.

Although no group claimed responsibility for the attack, southeast Nigeria has seen scores of assaults blamed on the outlawed separatists, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group or its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

IPOB, which seeks a separate state for ethnic Igbo people in the southeast, has repeatedly denied responsibility for the violence.

More than 100 police and other security personnel have been killed since the beginning of last year in targeted attacks, according to local media tallies.

Bello Turji Kachalla, popularly known as Turji, a notorious terrorist and bandit leader operating in northern Nigeria, particularly Zamfara, Sokoto and Niger states has said the Nigerian government was not interested in ending banditry because some of its officials benefit from it.

Turji who was reacting to recent aerial bombardment of his residence by military jets also accused the government of provoking them (terrorists) to break their peace pact with the residents.

Turji, early this year, led his gang to carry out a massacre in Zamfara where almost 200 people including women and children were killed.

On August 21 this year however, Deputy Governor of Zamfara state, Senator Muhammad Hassan Nasiha announced that Turji had embraced peace. But on September 18, he narrowly escaped being killed when the Nigerian Air force bombed his house in Fakai village in Shinkafi local government area of Zamfara state which led to the killing of 12 of his fighters and relatives.

The Defence Headquarters thereafter on November 14 declared him and 18 other terrorists wanted with a price tag of N5m each on their heads.

Reacting to the attack on his house, the bandits warlord, accused the government of breaking the peace accord they had with him to stop banditry and protect the people of Shinkafi axis from any attack.

Speaking on phone with an online Hausa television, Turji expressed bitterness over the air raid on his abode and the killing of innocent people when he had agreed with government officials and community leaders to abandon banditry.

His words: “I wonder if truly the government wanted to kill me. I think they only wanted to provoke me by making me renege on my promise not to kill anyone. If they could spot my house why couldn’t they sight and kill me because I only left the house a couple of minutes when the bombardment occurred.

“The people should know their enemy from the onset. The government is provoking us so that we will take revenge on the poor masses.

“The government is only fooling the gullible and naive people that they want to end banditry whereas in actual sense, they are the ones fueling the activities of the bandits and also benefiting from them.

“Peace is priceless and I’m ready to be a peace advocate unless the government wants me to be a warmonger. I’m ready for either peace or war. Whatever, the government wants, we can give them a multitude.”

According to him, “there have not been any attacks in the last five months since we reached a truce with the government but now that the military has attacked our home, we feel betrayed especially after the death of vulnerable people in the air strikes. The government only succeeded in destroying some part of my house and other buildings belonging to the innocent people.

“For the past five months, we didn’t attack or kill anyone around Shinkafi. As a result, farming and other businesses were flourishing without any hitches. I feel embarrassed when my name was mentioned after the attacks by other terrorists”.
