Sen. Kalu's Rural Renewal Drive Excites Umunneochi Community, As Lekwesi Umuchieze Amaoji Road Comes Alive

In continuation of his rural development efforts, the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has completed and delivered the 600 meters Lekwesi Umuchieze Amaoji road located in Umunneochi local government area of Abia State.

The road, already completed and delivered with drainage and Asphalt has been described by the community dwellers as the best dividend of democracy they’ve ever received in its entire history.

Residents who undertook an inspection of the newly completed infrastructural facility said that the community were indeed extremely joyful over the development.

Speaking behind the camera while recording footage of the road, a resident said that Kalu who is also the Senate Chief Whip has been impactful to their community throughout his tenure in the Senate.

He commended the quality of the road; “The road which is now completed is in healthy condition, the community are extremely happy about the road constructed by this amiable Senator and they owe him all he needs to return him to the Senate come 2023. You can see that the road is as good as you can think of it. All thanks to our Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu.

In a similar vein, Kalu has also intensified the construction of the first-ever tarred road in Atani-Abam community situated in Arochukwu Local Government Area which has currently attained its Asphalt coating stage.

In an amateur video obtained by the SUN made by Kalu Ayu a prominent Youth leader in Arochukwu L.G.A, the construction of the 3km road has reached its advanced stage following the construction of drainages, preparation of sub base and the application of laterite.

Speaking behind the footage, Kalu disclosed that the road project has Thrilled residents of the community, stating that they have resolved to re-elect Orji Kalu back to the Senate in appreciation for his good deeds to those communities.

Kalu said that road is the first ever tarred road in the history of the community;
“This is the 3km road that Orji Kalu is building for the people of Atani Abam. The road starts from Ndi Oji down to Atani Abam.

“They have completed the drainage 100% and you can see it is strong and solid. They have applied laterite what is happening now is adding a stone base as you can see work is still going on massively.

“Right now you see the grader coming, spreading the stone base in preparation for the Asphalt. This is how the work is going every day to see that the job is completed before Christmas day. Right from the beginning, we have never seen a tarred road in our lives in this community but this one has been given to us from Senator Kalu and we are very grateful.

Weeks ago some of the construction commenced for numerous roads located in Umunneochi, Isuikwuato, and Arochukwu L.G.As as captured in the 2022 Appropriation.

At Isuikwuato the SUN confirmed that Kalu had completed the construction of four roads and facilitated the construction of an additional nine as indicated in the 2022 budget.

Currently the construction of the Umuobiala rural road, Eluama is ongoing while construction of some other roads has also commenced they include; “Construction of Isuikwuato township road; Construction of Uturu Township Road, isuikwuato; Construction of Ukwunwangwu/Akpukpa/Ndudu rural road; Construction of Eke/Omoeme/Eme Amaezigba Road (prof. Ernest Ojukwu) road, Ahaba Imenyi, isuikwuato; Construction of a rural road at Acha Isuikwuato; Construction of Ekebe College road, Isuamawu Community (HRM Eze Dr.Christopher Aboh) road; Construction of Umuobiala rural road, Eluama; Construction of Nvuru Bridge, Uturu township and Construction of Eke/Omoeme/Amaezigba rural road, Ahana Imenyi.

Construction of roads facilitated for Umunneochi LGA has also reached advanced stage they include; the Ogwumabiri Obinolu Ngodo Isuochi road; Obinihu – Agbor Fada Road, Nnaeato and three other roads all in Umunneochi LGA.

Asides from the construction of schools, and health centers and the provision of motorized pipe-borne water for communities, the Senate Chief in over three and half years facilitated the construction of over sixty roads spread across rural communities in Abia North.

The UK is “sleepwalking” into a food supply crisis and the government must step in to help farmers, the National Farmers Union (NFU) has warned.

Yields of tomatoes and other crops will likely slump to record lows this year, it said, with potential supply problems ahead as already seen with eggs.

Soaring fuel, fertilizer, and feed costs were putting farmers under severe pressure, it added.

The government said the UK has a “highly resilient food supply chain”.

Some supermarkets are rationing egg sales after farmers cut back or halted production because of rising costs – a situation made worse by the Avian flu outbreak.

However, the NFU warned that food producers in other areas were now facing difficulties.

It said yields of energy-intensive crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and pears were likely to hit their lowest level this year since records began in 1985.

It also said milk prices were likely to fall below the cost of production, while beef farmers were considering reducing the number of cows they breed.

Rising costs were to blame, it said, with fertilizer prices for farmers more than tripling since 2019 and the cost of feed and diesel up by 75%.

Soaring energy costs, Brexit red tape, and worker shortages were also factors, it added.

NFU president Minette Batters said British food was “under threat” with the future of British fruit and vegetable supplies “in trouble”.

Already high food prices were sure to rise further if products became harder to source, she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“This is about government prioritizing food security, and if they fail to do so we will continue to see a greater contradiction in our production, a reliance on more imports, and availability is just not going to be there,” she said.

“We are self-sufficient in eggs – it’s been a massive success story – and we now have 320 million fewer eggs for the same period this year than last year.”

But Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said that retailers were used to managing pressures across their supply chains.

“Supermarkets source, and will continue to source, the vast majority of their food from the UK and know they need to pay a sustainable price to farmers,” he said, although they are facing additional costs.

Shoppers have been under pressure from the rapid pace of food price rises, although there are signs this may be starting to ease, according to market analysis firm Kantar.

Although food price inflation in the four weeks to 27 November was 14.6%, this edged down 0.1% from a record high in October.

This is the first time food price inflation has slowed in two years.

Costs challenge

The war in Ukraine and the coronavirus pandemic have driven up the price of food, energy, and fuel over the last year, affecting consumers and businesses alike.

Grocery prices rose at their fastest rate for 45 years in the year to October, official figures show, with the cost of staples such as milk, cheese, and eggs surging.

Steve Dresser, the boss of Grocery Insight, told the BBC that the big challenge comes from consumer appetite.

“Customers’ focus is on saving money and local foods generally come at a higher price, which can be difficult,” he said.

He said that rising prices meant farming “has taken a real battering this year”.

He went on: “Food security is increasingly important, as we saw during lockdown restrictions and indeed the period afterward that led to empty shelves.

“It’s clear that we face real challenges in our supply chain and as a nation, we should be looking to back our farming community, especially as Brexit has made things harder around importing foods.”

The NFU urged the government to do more to help farmers being pushed out of business, saying there were currently 7,000 fewer registered agricultural companies in the UK than in 2019.

And it wants ministers to consider giving emergency support to egg producers, given the recent disruption seen by consumers and farmers.

The NFU said the government should also lift the cap on seasonal overseas workers to tackle labour shortages and establish a new “food security” target to ensure enough food is produced domestically.

A Defra spokesman said: “Our high degree of food security is built on supply from diverse sources; strong domestic production as well as imports through stable trade routes.”

He added that the government is in touch regularly with farmers and that the food and farming minister will meet with businesses in the egg industry on Tuesday.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has told the residents of South-East that it did not order any five-day sit-at-home order in the region.

The group, therefore, asked the people to ignore the order, describing it as a “senseless” order from those against the Biafra agenda.

This is following a video currently circulating online ordering the people of the South-East to observe a sit-at-home on  December 9 -14, 2022.

But in a statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said it never issued any sit-at-home order on the days mentioned above.

The statement read in part, “We wish to state unequivocally to the people of Biafra, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafra freedom that IPOB leadership did not issue any sit-at-home order on 9th,10th, 11th, 12th, 13th or 14th of December 2022.

“IPOB never issued any sit-at-home order on these days mentioned above because we are not miscreants, senseless, or jobless people.

“Every Biafran and residents in Biafra Land should ignore such order from untrained and brainless individuals whose agenda is to make Biafra agitation unattractive to our people. Every Biafran must go to their normal business on those days.

“IPOB who is concerned about our people cannot issue such brainless uncaring five-day consecutive sit at home order to suffer our people during this critical time of the year when people are trying to makeup in their businesses for the year.

“The conception of consecutive five-day sit at home by a Nigeria agent and his sponsors is to show the level of wickedness and hatred they have against our people. Their agenda is to create insecurity and unnecessary hardship to make our people jettison Biafra freedom. How wicked!

“Again, everyone has his or her rights to go and collect his or her PVC from their pooling and registration centre without molestation. IPOB never boycott elections and has nothing to do with Nigeria’s shambolic elections.

“Our people should be prepared and ready to confront any fool who dares to enforce such wicked sit-at-home. Moreso, ESN operatives and IPOB volunteers will be out on these dates to protect our people and the markets.

“Biafran youths should also be ready to confront anybody who comes to force them to close their businesses on these days.

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday struck out a suit by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, challenging the eligibility of Accord, its governorship candidate and running mate, to contest the 2023 general elections in Rivers State for lack of jurisdiction.

Presiding Judge, Justice Stephen Daylop-Pam, in a separate suit, also struck out the PDP’s suit against all the National Assembly candidates of Accord for lack of jurisdiction.

Justice Daylop-Pam, in his judgment, did not go into the merit of the matter but premised his judgment on the recent decisions of the Appeal Court in Lagos and Rivers State, which ruled that no court has the jurisdiction to hear a suit filed by another political party bothering on internal party affairs.

The judge noted that any attempt by him to interfere in the matter after the appellate court had taken a decision on a similar matter will amount to him being tagged a rascal.

He thereafter upheld the objections of the counsels to the defendants against the suit.

Lawyers to the defendants in the suit, Benjamin Omeje and Joy Nuniee, described the judgment as a victory for democracy.

Counsel to PDP, Dike Udenna, refused to speak to journalists.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has assured the people of the state that he would not abandon his predecessor’s ongoing projects since the government is a continuum.

The governor’s assurance was contained in a statement by the spokesperson to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Kunle Alabi.

According to the statement, the governor was at the Osun State House of Assembly, yesterday, to seek the lawmakers’ cooperation for an Executive-Legislative relationship.

The statement reads: “Now that election is over, I want everyone to join me to move the state forward, the government cannot do it alone. For we to have an enviable state, everyone must be ready to play their part for the state to move forward.

“I promise that my administration would not cheat anyone, it will be an all-inclusive government where everybody will be happy and peace will reign supremely in the state.”

Earlier in his address, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye held that the Assembly will do everything to support the government saying they may only disagree with the executive based on facts of the law and not sentiments.

The Speaker said: “You and your team have the utmost task of strengthening the Executive-Legislative relationship; it is most important considering the differences in the ideology of our political parties. We must also allow the rule of law to guide our actions, behaviour and activities during this period.

“On a personal note, I want to beseech you to surround yourself with men of valour, value and honour, who will give the best advice that will advance the lives of our people. Your activities and that of your team must at all times be in tandem with the principle of separation of powers and mutual respect for each arm of government.

“Mr Governor, I am happy that you have at some point served in this arm as a distinguished senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This enormous task of acting right and staying on that path lies with the legislative arm and we as the accredited representatives of our people have sworn to continue on this path.”

2023: INEC Not Ready For Electronic Voting, Transmission Of Results - Tinubu

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed no confidence in the decision of the National Electoral Commission to deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) for the 2023 election.

“INEC is still yet to assure us during this election that electronic transmission, the technology being used for the accreditation and the total votes counts is reliable, dependable and assuring in our democratic process before we introduce a complicated element of…ballot,” Mr Tinubu said on Monday.

The APC presidential candidate spoke at Chatham House in London as part of a strategy to expound on his plans for security, economy and foreign policy in the United Kingdom.

His fresh opposition to the voting technology reinforced the position of the ruling party, which had earlier claimed that Nigeria was not yet ripe for the use of such technology in the 2023 poll.

Speaking further before a diverse audience at the frontline UK think-tank, Mr Tinubu said he’s one of the politicians in Nigeria now losing confidence in the nation’s voting system with the introduction of the new technology ahead of the polls.

“We are still losing confidence in our democratic and voting system,” he said.

The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has said he is prepared for the dirt associated with politics.

He spoke at Chatham House in London, on Monday, where he addressed controversies surrounding his age, school and time in the private sector.

Fielding questions from the audience, the former governor of Lagos State revealed that efforts by those who questioned his school records ended in disappointment.

He said, “At the time of birth, I was dated March 29, 1952, in the family record. Then, I don’t think I had decided to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not even that I would go into politics.

“I’ve had very good exposure in life. My record is consistent in the university they questioned. They’ve now confessed that they wasted their money and their time. The record is there, and the transcript is there showing March 1952.

“I’m not claiming another father, I’m Tinubu and Tinubu proper. If they want DNA, they could as well request one.

“One of them has been accused of not being a Nigerian citizen, I didn’t touch that area.

“Equally, it remains the same. Chicago State University where I graduated has attested to that. Now, I can announce that I have received my original replacement degree certificate from them.

“Deloitte trained me as an accountant. Mobile Oil has attested to my outstanding record. I got to the pinnacle of my career in the private sector. Who among them can brag about that?

“Yes, if you want to wrestle with the pig, you’ve got to live with the dirt. That’s what I’m doing. I got into politics knowing fully well that it is muddy water. Smog will come, and you will have to live with the dirt and make sure you are upright to finish the job.”

In his opening speech, Tinubu expressed his stance against electoral violence and intimidation while urging others in the presidential race to allow Nigerians to decide the future of the country.

He said, “I stand firmly against all forms of electoral violence and intimidation.

“Haven spent most of my career in political opposition, I have long fought against electoral malpractice and any attempt to extinguish the legitimate choice of voters. I will continue to do so, I promise.

“I urge all my fellow contestants in this election to do the same. Let the sovereign will of the people decide the path of our nation. And let this election be determined by voters making their choice freely rather than the domineering intimidation of the troublesome few.”

He further told the audience, “I am confident that in a few short months, people will go to the polls and give me their mandates.

“I’m ready to lead and govern the country. I will return here to interact with you when the elections are over. I will come not with a long list of priorities for the future but with a plan for collaboration in the best interest of the country I love and dedicate myself to for a lifetime.”

Asked if his administration will ensure that Nigerians in the diaspora voted in subsequent elections, Tinubu stated that the current system of voting was yet to prove to be reliable enough to accommodate other systems.

He said, “I think it was El-rufai that mentioned last night that diasporans are entitled to voting. If you make contributions to the economy with remittances that you have been making, your right to vote should not be abrogated but promoted.

“However, we are still building confidence in our democratic and voting system. INEC is still yet to assure us during this election that electronic transmission – the technology being used for accreditation and the total vote count – is reliable, dependable and assuring in our democratic process before we introduce the complicated process of the mail-in ballot and others.

The Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed the claim that he doesn’t want to spend money for political campaigns (not giving ‘shishi’).

Obi said he is more committed on how to use state money for the public good if elected into office in the forthcoming presidential election in 2023.

Obi disclosed this on Monday during an interactive session between him and the north-eastern stakeholders in Abuja.

“People say we don’t give people ‘shishi’. It is not true. But I want to use your money for your good. I want to use it to educate your children and give them opportunities.

“I don’t want to steal your money. That’s not what I am doing because it is wrong. Rather, I want to be part of you and your children,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also said he is committed to the Northeast, adding that he is not going to be President from Abuja.

“I am going to be your President from the Northeast. There’s no way I will not tour every single state of Nigeria. I’ll be everywhere,” he said.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi says the vast number of unemployed youths in the North-East region is the biggest contributing factor to insecurity in the region, as thousands of youths wake up every morning without food or shelter.

Obi stated this on Monday when he met with some North-East stakeholders in Abuja.

According to him, with the enormous amount of arable land in the North-East, the region has the potential not only to feed the country but also produce enough cash crops for export. He pledged that his administration will bring that to reality if he wins the presidential elections next year.

He said insecurity will be a thing of the past when idle youths become engaged in legal activities, ranging from agriculture to commerce which will ensure the country moves from consumption to production.

Obi said, “Youth unemployment is nearing 50 per cent, so you have millions of youth in their productive age doing nothing, not knowing where the next meal will come from. With that situation, you are going to have crises; crisis of insecurity, crisis of banditry, crisis of kidnapping.

“What I and Datti (Baba-Ahmed) are promising you is number one; that we have the best combination, the best experience to start tackling issue of security and I will say this, hold us responsible. Let nobody tell you we cannot solve issue of insecurity in Nigeria, it can be stopped and done very quickly.

“We want to unite Nigeria, we want to see Nigerians being proud of their country again. We want to remove Nigeria from where it is today, from consumption to production and when you do that, you start pulling people out of poverty.”
